I was even fortunate enough to get a ride in a WW II primary trainer (PT 19) once. One of my old customers owned it and graciously offered me a ride. A ride I’ve never forgotten! The reason I say I’ll never be a pilot is I’m 71, retired, hard of hearing and on a fixed income.

I will say there’s plenty of pilots out there flying into their 80s. But at the end of the day in any which way I say just get up and experience aviation any which way. Which sounds like you did. I’m not there YET but once I have all my cfi ratings I want to work with some people like you on a pro bono basis. But not just seniors. I’d like to reach people all around the world that may not have the resources readily available but have the drive and passion for success. Stay in touch. I’d love to take you flying some day.
Yes, getting up in a piper tomahawk probably changed my life. I have sim setup, that’s my fun time. but I just love the real feeling of taking the controls of a single engine GA. Everything reacts so quickly. I wasn’t qualified (right seat) but my friend (who was) knew I could at the least hold altitude and VFR navigate. My brother also is going through his PPL. But GA is on a precarious level, too many accidents.
You should impress on the utility of your Buddy check system. You were interrupted at the 8:00 mark, in the middle of your checklist. Even though you were interrupted by ATC, you could then pick up from where you left off, because the Buddy check showed you exactly where you were in your checklist.
I can see why PNG would be such a alluring place to do God's work. This video reminds me of a famous quote, "The two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why." God has truly blessed you with the skills and talent to perform his mission in this beautiful place. Thanks Ryan for sharing.
Do you even realize just how screwed up Christian countries are. Christians are divided among themselves and have wared against each other for centuries. I believe in the message and the philosophy and teaching of Jesus Christ so never ever set foot in a organized church. Would never think of bringing a religion to a people and tell them they are going to hell if they do not believe in a certain way. Let them see you as an example and actions and be a good person. And then you land anyway so what is with the title? Should not lie, think that is a no;no for a Christian. Or is it?
That's PNG bush flying distilled into 30 minutes - a truly excellent video Ryan! Aibai is an amazing place, challenging at any time but in those conditions a very serious prospect. Your thought processes throughout should inspire anybody who ever thinks of flying an aircraft. The pre-flight planning and weather reports before departure are good but were eclipsed by your calm reasoning of the weather and flight conditions as the flight progressed and the weather was not playing ball. As you have aways said to us, if you plan properly and have the relevant information to hand you are ahead of the aircraft and in control. The approach into Aibai , the overflight, exploritory circuits and the landing were a wonderful demonstration of your organization and flying skills. The timelapse back to Goroka showed off that heartbreaking beautiful scenery superbly - it's wonderful to see it from that altitude on timelapse. Thanks Ryan -a superb video.

I've had to go around due to sudden snow fall. Boy does that play havoc on your depth perception. What you see is like the Millennium Falcon going to light speed, only it doesn't stop! That's when instruments are truly your friend. Can't imagine having to land on a sloping short grass strip with my depth perception degraded due to rain. That takes skills I don't have. Ryan, may God continue to bless you! I loved this video and indeed all of yours! This one reminded me a bit of my first solo decades ago. Was flying a Piper PA-18 Super Cub and a sudden rain shower occurred after takeoff. When I throttled back turning final, the runway became invisible. So I advanced the power to blow the rain off the windscreen. I had not previously practiced wheel landings, but that's what ended up happening. Fortunately the nice and flat Runway 5 at Morristown NJ helped contribute to a successful outcome.

For my PPL A flight instruction, my instructor asked me not to rely on checklist but instead learn my flow on Archer III which I did. After this, the whole flight school (Sabena aeroclub) actually put this rule and printed some great instructions for each plane to learn our flow. That was a couple of years before covid. This video was a success. I loved it. Sharp and very specific. Loved it. Thank you for sticking to flight description!

Absolutely awesome to watch real world air operations with the Kodiak. Iv'e been flying the simworks Kodiak 100 in msfs for a while now, and absolutely loving this amazing aircraft I have probably about 200 hrs or so under my belt, and really starting to get a feel for it, and watching what you do makes perfect sense to me now.
Stick at it - if you have the time simmulation flying can be very rewarding. I don't have a decent Kodiak model on my simmuator so use a Twin Otter which isn't ideal for a lot of PNG's hardest airstrips. Stick with your flying it really is stimulating. I got into simming in PNG during Covid and was recently shocked to realise I've clocked up about two thousand hours in simmulation (because I have the time) but I still have so much to learn. Stick at it - Ryan is a great teacher.
@@stevekirk8546 I definitely have the time to fly, and I cannot ever see myself giving up flying, even if it is only simulated. Ryan certainly is a great teacher, and an amazing guy, and you are certainly right about having so much to learn. Flying is a constant learning curve. I'm using the OnAir Career addon for MSFS, and it is absolutely amazing being able to do transport and passenger flights and get paid for doing it. I have got an ever expanding company, and fleet of aircraft. which makes the simulator so much more interesting and realistic.
You have a lovely channel. In 1979 I flew to PNG to visit my girlfriend, Elizabeth (now my wife of over 43 years) who was staying with her sister Rosemary and brother in law Peter who was working in Madang for the World Health Organisation coordinating training for Medical Outpost. We flew from Madang to Goroka via Lae Nadzab airport then took a bus to Mount Hagen. 20 miles from Mt Hagen the bus broke down so we managed to get a PSV for the remainder of the journey. We stayed in a hostel in Mount Hagen, during our first night the girls school burned down. Another man, an entomologist, took me to the school in his Suzuki Jeep, all the girls had managed to evacuate safely but the school dormitory was lost. On another day we travelled by PSV to the Bayer River Bird Sanctuary accompanied by men wearing arse grass and with pigs teeth through their noses, we told them that we lived in “Country belong Queen Elizabeth the Second” which seemed to earn us a lot of respect. The area around Mount Hagen was locked in tribal war and there were many groups of warriors with spears and bows and arrows patrolling. I had a very memorable time, one time visiting a coconut plantation that was formerly an airstrip with around 10 Japanese Zero aeroplanes still on the runway, they looked like they might still be able to fly away if there were not so many coconut trees in their way. Your channel brings back some lovely memories, thank you.
Thanks Ryan, for the continued info on aircraft planning, the basics, and I really enjoyed this as a simmer. I don’t have the Kodiak, but the Cessna 208b seems comparable. Garmin g1000 works well in MSFS. Still learning, but PNG is my favourite place to plan a flight.

Ryan, very good video. I have watched for a long time, and this never gets old. Your skills are off the charts. Question, I realize that the type of flying you do must be all day time flights. Are there any flights that you do at night?
Virtually no one flies at night in PNG as there is no infrastructure to support it other than at Port Moresby and to a lesser degree Nadzab/Lae. I think Ryan said the only time his company would fly at night would be on medivac but presumably they would have to take off in daylight and land in Port Moresby which has navaids and being an international airport presumably it has runway lights too.
First I flew on a small plane like the one you fly was in 2017. I would absolutely love to have a job like yours, I got myself into so much student debt with aviation I wouldn't be able to have a job like that but man I love the lifestyle you live of remote pilot/youtuber

Rain-X for Plastic. I used regular Rain-X on my 737 for decades. Wouldn't leave home without it. Beats wipers. Once you try it, you will always carry it. Harder the rain, the better it works. Godspeed Sir.

Fun ride Ryan. Could really hear the prop wash in beta. That’s quite a bit of force pushing back on the Kodiak. Would you compare it to stopping power of brakes or stopping power of the prop wash? Hoi Ryan, to answer your question from a few videos back: I like extended videos with more walking around the villages, and with the drone showing the wonderful landscape. Also, I wouldn't mind if you could explain more technical details, and the reasons *why* you do things, at calm moment during the flight itself, like for example: - When you extent flaps, does the Kodiak tend to pitch up? Or does it stay relatively neutral? - What are the pitch, roll and jaw effects when you add or reduce power? And what are the effects on each other, e.g. if you only move the rudder to make it yaw, how much does it roll too? And vice-versa. - How does it behave when it stalls, if you know this? Do you feel it coming and is it smooth, or does it stall suddenly and viciously? Does it tend to spin? (But don't try.) - Does it have a stick-shaker or other stall warnings like red dots on the display, in addition to the beep? - How accurately do the take-off and landing speeds have to be? Can you just guestimate them? Thus, could you fly the Kodiak "on the feel", instead of on the numbers? Thus just feeling when it wants to take off and wants to land? Like people do in small bush planes, they just feel it without looking at the numbers? Does the Kodiak give enough feedback? - Are the aelerons, rudder and elevator manually controlled, or power-assisted? - Does the plane have aeleron trim, and if yes, when do you use it? I wonder if you can compensate the torque of the propeller with aeleron trim, instead of rudder trim, since the aelerons have a much bigger arm? - During take-off and landing, is it easy to keep it going straight on the runway? Or does it tend to pull to one side, like tail draggers, or like some high-power planes due to prop torque? - Why no bigger wheels, for better performance on muddy runways or on long grass? - Why the Kodiak, and why no Pilatus Porter or Cessna bush plane, or a twin Dornier or DHC? You will have valid reasons, I am just curious. - Do you have a GoPro with standard lens instead of wide-angle? Thus the equivalent of an old 60mm or 70mm lens on 35mm film? That would give a visually correcter perspective of the landscape, like you see it in real life. It shows better how steep the mountains are, or how short the runways are. This in addition to your current cams. - I also liked the videos when training other pilots; those gave additional viewpoints on things. Anyway, I do appreciate your videos, I hope you keep making them. Bush flying is real, pure flying.

Ryan certainly is a great teacher, and an amazing guy, and you are certainly right about having so much to learn. Flying is a constant learning curve. I'm using the OnAir Career addon for MSFS, and it is absolutely amazing being able to do transport and passenger flights and get paid for doing it. I have got an ever expanding company, and fleet of aircraft. which makes the simulator so much more interesting and realistic.
You have a lovely channel. In 1979 I flew to PNG to visit my girlfriend, Elizabeth (now my wife of over 43 years) who was staying with her sister Rosemary and brother in law Peter who was working in Madang for the World Health Organisation coordinating training for Medical Outpost. We flew from Madang to Goroka via Lae Nadzab airport then took a bus to Mount Hagen. 20 miles from Mt Hagen the bus broke down so we managed to get a PSV for the remainder of the journey. We stayed in a hostel in Mount Hagen, during our first night the girls school burned down. Another man, an entomologist, took me to the school in his Suzuki Jeep, all the girls had managed to evacuate safely but the school dormitory was lost. On another day we travelled by PSV to the Bayer River Bird Sanctuary accompanied by men wearing arse grass and with pigs teeth through their noses, we told them that we lived in “Country belong Queen Elizabeth the Second” which seemed to earn us a lot of respect. The area around Mount Hagen was locked in tribal war and there were many groups of warriors with spears and bows and arrows patrolling. I had a very memorable time, one time visiting a coconut plantation that was formerly an airstrip with around 10 Japanese Zero aeroplanes still on the runway, they looked like they might still be able to fly away if there were not so many coconut trees in their way. Thanks Ryan, for the continued info on aircraft planning, the basics, and I really enjoyed this as a simmer. I don’t have the Kodiak, but the Cessna 208b seems comparable. Garmin g1000 works well in MSFS. Still learning, but PNG is my favourite place to plan a flight.

Ryan, very good video. I have watched for a long time, and this never gets old. Your skills are off the charts. Question, I realize that the type of flying you do must be all day time flights. Are there any flights that you do at night?
Virtually no one flies at night in PNG as there is no infrastructure to support it other than at Port Moresby and to a lesser degree Nadzab/Lae. I think Ryan said the only time his company would fly at night would be on medivac but presumably they would have to take off in daylight and land in Port Moresby which has navaids and being an international airport presumably it has runway lights too.

The only night flights I've ever done are Medevac flights to Australia.
First I flew on a small plane like the one you fly was in 2017. I would absolutely love to have a job like yours, I got myself into so much student debt with aviation I wouldn't be able to have a job like that but man I love the lifestyle you live of remote pilot/youtuber

Rain-X for Plastic. I used regular Rain-X on my 737 for decades. Wouldn't leave home without it. Beats wipers. Once you try it, you will always carry it. Harder the rain, the better it works. Godspeed Sir.

Fun ride Ryan. Could really hear the prop wash in beta. That’s quite a bit of force pushing back on the Kodiak. Would you compare it to stopping power of brakes or stopping power of the prop wash? I vote on prop wash. That’s a quick slow down and wheels skid too easy. Fun flight as always. I look forward to them all.

Hoi Ryan, to answer your question from a few videos back: I like extended videos with more walking around the villages, and with the drone showing the wonderful landscape. Also, I wouldn't mind if you could explain more technical details, and the reasons *why* you do things, at calm moment during the flight itself, like for example:
- When you extent flaps, does the Kodiak tend to pitch up? Or does it stay relatively neutral?
- What are the pitch, roll and jaw effects when you add or reduce power? And what are the effects on each other, e.g. if you only move the rudder to make it yaw, how much does it roll too? And vice-versa.
- How does it behave when it stalls, if you know this? Do you feel it coming and is it smooth, or does it stall suddenly and viciously? Does it tend to spin? (But don't try.)
- Does it have a stick-shaker or other stall warnings like red dots on the display, in addition to the beep?
- How accurately do the take-off and landing speeds have to be? Can you just guestimate them? Thus, could you fly the Kodiak "on the feel", instead of on the numbers? Thus just feeling when it wants to take off and wants to land? Like people do in small bush planes, they just feel it without looking at the numbers? Does the Kodiak give enough feedback?
- Are the aelerons, rudder and elevator manually controlled, or power-assisted?
- Does the plane have aeleron trim, and if yes, when do you use it? I wonder if you can compensate the torque of the propeller with aeleron trim, instead of rudder trim, since the aelerons have a much bigger arm?
- During take-off and landing, is it easy to keep it going straight on the runway? Or does it tend to pull to one side, like tail draggers, or like some high-power planes due to prop torque?
- Why no bigger wheels, for better performance on muddy runways or on long grass?
- Why the Kodiak, and why no Pilatus Porter or Cessna bush plane, or a twin Dornier or DHC? You will have valid reasons, I am just curious.
- Do you have a GoPro with standard lens instead of wide-angle? Thus the equivalent of an old 60mm or 70mm lens on 35mm film? That would give a visually correcter perspective of the landscape, like you see it in real life. It shows better how steep the mountains are, or how short the runways are. This in addition to your current cams.
- I also liked the videos when training other pilots; those gave additional viewpoints on things.
Anyway, I do appreciate your videos, I hope you keep making them. Bush flying is real, pure flying.
