I feel I've been taking for granted how good this channel is, so I'm going to say it again: from the technical details of the flight, all the way to the editing, the camera placement, sound... What you do is excellence.
I second that. These videos are gems, and have been for a long time. The visuals are stunning, editing as well, and the amount of information and insight Ryan provides is amazing. Super enjoyable to watch. It is easy to overlook how much work it obviously takes to do what he does and we should remind ourselfs of it, as you just did.
I teach a year 9 STEM class called Aviation Technology and have been showing some of your videos to the students. They are amazed at your flights and the professionalism you exhibit throughout your flights. Later this week I'm going to have them recreate this flight in MSFS 2020.
This video is amazing, thank you. It’s so great to see Aviation being taught in y9! Some years ago, Flight was an optional module in Science and I taught it after having previously trained as a glider pilot. All my students got one question wrong on the external exam. It was simple Q about how to make a plane turn left. My students were correct, but the answers had not been written by aviators. Hope the exam boards have learned by now. Wish you and your students well!
Balls of steel, so far one of the best pilots in youtube. Who else got the balls to land commited like that ? Great fly mate. Tailwinds and blue skies.
A guy from my neighborhood that grew up with my dad went as a missionary to Irian Jaya in ~1956. He and his wife were there until 1995. I know their son who grew up there and is a trained pilot. I’ll send him this video as I’d imagine he can really relate to this content. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I've watched a lot of these videos now including the Kitfox series. Your calm and methodical decision making using all the resources you can access, your flight planning, situational awareness, local knowledge and precise flying in an environment as challenging and unforgiving of errors as PNG sets a great example of how to do it well. Watching you has helped to make me a better pilot.
I can’t get enough of this channel, it is absolutely fantastic, everything that he explain, how he eddit the videos, all the desition tha he has to make during the flight, and of course, what an outstanding pilot, thanks for showing all of your flight exoeriences, I do really enjoy everyone of you videos.
As a commercial pilot flying choppers in Malaysia, it doesn’t matter if passengers have an international flight same/ next day! It only matters if we operate safely. I’d rather lose a flight and some money, than my health/ life…
My thoughts exactly! He shouldn't have flown until he had a clear path to his destination. Thank god mainstream commercial pilots don't make decisions like this.
@@phuketexplorer - - He had a plan. And he had three backup plans. This is more than what ‘mainstream’ pilots plan for (who are required to file a single alternate, and reserve fuel) and only if the primary airport is forecast to be far below minimums. What he did was IFR plan for the primary airport, and an alternate IFR airport, and another IFR airport, and then, if all of those failed, he had a VFR airport planned - all within his planned IFR Fuel Reserve. He landed at his backup IFR/VFR airport. This is highly, highly competent Single Pilot Cockpit Resource Management (CRM). To do all this, in the bush, safely and competently, is a testament to his skill as a pilot, the awesome platform that is the Quest Kodiak, and his calling as a missionary. Rather than put his safety, and the safety of the airplane, in jeopardy, he executed a landing at an alternate. If he were to wait until the ‘path was clear’, very few flying services would take place here, as high mountains and low clouds trapped in the mountains are the norm.
@brandonfoss8540 - because it's not get-there-itis. It's "Hey, these guys are depending on me, and if I can make it happen, I will". To me, it seems he had a great primary plan, a backup (which he executed), another backup, and then a VFR flight backup - all within his conservative fuel reserves. That would be the antithesis of "get-there-itis" and had zero to due to luck.
You, sir, are an AMAZING pilot! You may not realize this, but you could walk into just about any airline, and you'd outperform almost everyone just based on your proficiency, as demonstrated here in this video. Thanks so much for sharing your decision-making and thought process!
Again, Ryan, a super video. I was really impressed with how calmly you dealt with the IFR white out conditions and I’m always impressed by how far you think ahead to prepare for any situation. Super professional! Thanks for sharing the trip with us.
By FAR the most fun video of this channels till date (to me at least). Definitely takes me back with my dad in 1992 delivering supplies to remote Brazilian Army locations deep in the Amazon forest, in his Cesna Caravan. Weather was always cloud heavy, and unpredictable, but super fun flights due to that. Me & brothers had THE best childhood ever.
I wish I could give two thumbs up or even ten! Not boring at all!! This is exactly the kind of decision making and focus that safe pilots need to see. I was saying to myself out loud, “don’t go today, don’t go!” and then next thing I watch is you the next day saying you’d delayed a day. Then on pins & needles and loved how you planned / programmed the good weather coastal airport in ahead of time, skipping the idea of even thinking about returning to Goroka on that day. Nice!
This was a fantastic UA-cam. Sorry you didn’t win anything as to me you are the winners of the most humble, courteous, calm and fun sailors on UA-cam! You really are the Best of England!
Not boring at all, it's actually more intense flying almost basically 'blind' and not knowing if you'll be able to land, and then having to not know if you can even land at a contingency airstrip. Also - Ryan simultaneously making intense time/fuel/weather/landing calculations - "Ooo look at the cool waterfall over there!" 😂 😂😂
Came across your channel purely by accident, and boy am I glad that I did! Your videos are truly interesting and your content is excellent, clear concise and very informative! What a truly amazing job you’re doing over there in Papua New Guinea, a Country that I must admit I’m not too familiar with, but from what I’ve seen so far, looks an incredible place! I’ll certainly be checking out your videos from now on! Thanks for the flight, and safe flying!
Love the channel; we aren’t religious people but it’s wonderful to see what impact regardless of small you might think it is can make to these isolated communities; let’s call it like it is…..without you Ryan and your fellow pilots and whole team these people wouldn’t have access to life saving facilities or the basics needed for life. Well done 👍
Ryan, I really enjoy your channel. Your dedication to the planning and execution of the process of the flight from beginning to end is humbling, you are the best. It's great to hear how you think, and the reasons for the decisions you make in such a dynamic environment. It feels like you really enjoy the editing and production as well, you are very good at it. And of course the terrain, the area and your service to these communities I find fascinating. Thank you for what you do!
No mater how many of your videos I watch Ryan, I'm always anxious watching you land. I get the same feeling when I'm clocking up hours on Microsoft Flight Sim. Always a phew moment when we touch down.
Wow! Another great all round video - I very much enjoy this format including pre-flight preparations and planning along with the actual flight. Just another day in the life of a PNG bush pilot - but that one was pretty stressful. Hope there is a video of the second attempt to reach Norambi - your skills in reading the cloud formations are epic.
Love watching these. Like everyone says great editing but the professionalism is my favourite thing, staying ahead of the aircraft and situation at all times.
Absolutely great flying. The area is tricky due to terrain and weather. Be careful out there, beter to turn back, than to risk your life, the plane, the cargo. And great filming also!
Neat videos! I worry when I see bad weather along your flight route. Please continue to be super careful. Single engine, bad weather, high terrain all certainly keep you on your toes. Prayers and good vibes your way!
Love the channel. Inspiring and educational. And you communicate well. Thanks for all your work. In life and on this channel. 😊 Prayers and abundant blessings.
In addition to being a professional, you are very skilled in commanding your plane. Good flights, the population you serve counts on you. Here from Brazil, follow my greetings.
I have to say, I thoroughly enjoy your flight videos Sir... It's every bit as good as the NET FLEX series called, Ozark's. I get to relax and watch you live your life and fly where I would love to go someday! It's almost as good as being there! TY and stay safe!
I am most impressed with your single pilot CRM - You work the Garmin to its extent, and you do it well. And yes, your comment about this being different than IFR in the States was well-said. I think the closest I get is “…maintain your own obstacle and terrain obstruction until…” MVA is reached. It does help, I am sure, to have such an amazing bush platform that is the Quest Kodiak… I am thankful to God for your service and your calling. Keep spreading the good news!
It’s not boring outside; reminds me of the days I was trucking around at those levels in our 182 - IFR in and between layers, sometimes on top, donning the sunglasses and admiring the speed at which we were coasting along the clouds before plunging in there again, hand-flying most of the time. Oh the good days… Memories to last for the remaining - God willing - twenty years or so of a lifetime.

Great judgement and strategy with the rain, clouds and mountains. It was a good decision to wait out the weather at Simbari instead of going on to Madang. Very challenging to get passengers out of the bush to make their other flights. Thanks for your service Ryan.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!💪🏻💪🏻 I'm watching you every day because I'm going to start flying on the Dash8, and I want to be as aware as possible about flying at low altitude and how to manage and recognize weather issues so thank you again!😂
Hats off my friend. That is some challenging flying requiring good aeronautical decision making. Let the folks take ground transportation to where you are. You can’t do the impossible.
This reminds me of a story. Our group was sitting on the strip at Kokoda waiting to take off for Port Moresby and one of our group, who was a pilot, was sitting in the copilot seat. Just before take off he asks the pilot "How short of a take off roll can one of these things do?" The pilot lights up in a huge grin and says "I'll show you". We only needed 1/3 of the strip at Kokoda to get airborne. It was a fun ride.
I'm 66 and I'm thinking about getting trained to fly. I kind of envy you because you are getting serious experience that most pilots will never get. You'd be able to handle issues a lot more rationally because of your constant varying flying conditions.
I love the waterfall one arrival to the dirt grass 4 approach to a cat 3 or LPV with special stol kit as thing flys so crazy slow I love it.. you had like 2.6 miles of runway left that was awesome you could have gotten current with 3 up and downs and still came to full stop ! So there’s always an approach you just need to build one in the box
I’m always amazed at your constant high workload, even without filming yourself. At least making the videos helps you to hear your own logic. I hope it helps your decision making!
Time 36:56 reminds me of some places in South Korea that I landed in the wet season. I was a lot heavier than you so the temp runway was covered in Marston Matting. Full reverse and brakes. Mud everywhere. It seems that the really beautiful places come with a little bit of fear. LOL
I feel I've been taking for granted how good this channel is, so I'm going to say it again: from the technical details of the flight, all the way to the editing, the camera placement, sound... What you do is excellence.

True
except for his hair seemingly uncombed and sloppy
Also couldn't agree more, have watched the channel for ages and this video made me think exactly the same...it is excellence

Not sure why he gets so much praise. Did it work because out because it was safe or was it lucky? Luck will not always be on your side.

That approach looked super stressful Ryan! Looking forward to part 2 :D

You gotta keep your job interesting....right?
Videos are really looking good, like the slow, contemplative start, and the pre-flight chat. Take care.
Lots go into a flight like this. Appreciate that he shows it.

Pretty sure they were all just living out there chilling for a long time before missionaries showed up but I get where you're coming from.
I'm not a pilot, it is the absolute trust in the systems and skills that is amazing to watch
Yes Ryan, you produce and provide an outstanding product and content! I am retired Navy Captain, never sky pilot but I definitely enjoy your stuff!
So good being able to watch your decision making process in real time. Thanks for all the work putting it together 11/10
Some very dicey weather conditions! Good flying and mission management Ryan, thank you for the Vlog!
Incredibly tough conditions Ryan, handled like a pro as always👍

That’s crazy! Great job.
