They had the upper hand. They were the stars of the show, and already had millions of fans. If management had said no they could have gone somewhere else, got a record deal, and made millions of dollars for another company.

His drumming on circle sky was excellent! He was extremely talented and picked up the drums quickly. He was a musician prior to the Monkees which helped. And of course he had great instructors.

It's sad loving this much my Monkees. But I couldn't presenced those amazing shows because I hadn't even born for that time. I only have these videos to know how wonderful they were. 🤍 I will always love them. 🤍 i will be always a Monkee fan. 🤍
Davy indeed did play multiple instruments.No less an authority than Peter Tork said Davy was an outstanding musician. He also said Davy downplayed it because he lacked confidence but Peter said he definitely had that talent.
In those early years live, When Micky would come out front to sing, Davy would play drums. When Peter Tork was playing banjo, Davy played the bass. Davy and Peter would also switch off on keyboards needed.
Being from Utah, I can say the following : 1. This theater is actually in Bountiful (a short drive north of Salt Lake City. 2. The building is there today in its original shape but unfortunately is a used car dealership. 3. Lagoon (which is where the announcer said they would hold a free concert). Is 15-20 minutes up the road. Back then it would have been mostly farmland but today is fully populated. Lagoon is an amusement park that was also a major concert venue from the 1960’s-1980’s (its stage only does a few local shows only today). Some major acts that came through were Jimi Hendrix(not with the Monkee’s) and The Beach Boys to name a few.
I think technically, it was their live version of “Listen to the Band” at the end of 1969’s “33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee” that was their last was it it?
Actually not quite next-to-last. In September & October '68, they played at least half a dozen more shows in Australia/Japan. Only 1 recording is available. Maybe someday somebody from Down Under or from the Land of the Rising Sun will unearth a boot from their garage. BTW, did u know that toilets in Australia swirl in the opposite direction from the US (& other northern places) when flushed?? Nifty factoid huh!
It's a great pity that Peter Tork left the Monkees when he did. They were developing into a great band. They might really have gained some musical respect and gone somewhere.
the reason he left was that Peter was ONLY one that wanted them to be a proper band! All the others weren't interested in being The Monkees as a proper band. He has said many times, he would have stayed if they had stayed a proper band. Thats why he was happy to go back for the reunion tours
@@jocook17 That's not true. The others did want to be a real band. Mike Nesmith in particular was quite forceful with the executives about that. Peter left the band because he didn't like the way the TV show had characterized him. It had nothing to do with his bandmates.

He has said this on camera. Yes he didn't like the dummy thing, but he's also said he would have stayed for a 3rd series. he's admitted he was also a bit arrogant & believed he was set now & would just fall into being a solo rock star.
The group received the Bronze Bravo Otto of the youth magazine Bravo in Germany in 1968, behind the Bee Gees and the Beatles. Here in Germany, the series was a street sweeper, at least among young people. Musically I am very surprised by this short concert recording. Reminds somehow of garage punk
They continued to grow as musicians throughout their career. There is a live bootleg of the band playing live in Japan later in 1968. They were getting really good by then. They would reunite in 1996 for an album ("Justus") which featured just the band writing, producing, singing, and playing the accompaniment. Good stuff.
If you listen to any of their studio albums Mike always has a few songs on each of their albums except two because he had departed from the band at that time. Circle Sky such a great song. Great band from a bunch of guys who started as a TV show and upset the apple cart along the way.

I believe they recorded all the other songs, they were just left off the Head boxed set because only Nez's vocals were properly miked (and even then he had to go into the studio to re-record the vocals for Circle Sky.)
Yeah. I love Nez's singing voice, but he sounded weirdly low on "You Just May be the One" and "You Told Me" and I could hear his voice crack at the beginning of "Sunny Girlfriend." Before "Circle Sky" I could hear him clearing his throat when he was talking. This is a rare thing.
I also think they suffered from lack of stage monitors and this was before the era of in-ear monitoring. It’s hard to stay on pitch when you can’t hear yourself.

I interviewed Andrew Sandoval about this shortly before the 'Head' box was released. He said that Mike was the only who was properly miced for recording because they were mainly there to capture 'Circle Sky'.
You told me is pretty damn good for a bunch of guys that couldn’t play. Mike just couldn’t get his voice going here though. Circle Sky is their best moments as a band.
Who's the genius who decided NOT to have the cameras rolling during the event?!?!?! I don't know how many songs they did that night in total - but wish more was recorded. Might have made a nice live album with a few little touch-up....
Cameras were rolling I think but there's something with copyright keeping them from being released. There's also footage of Davy singing some songs that isn't on here but I don't think audio for those songs were recorded
This is really interesting..where did this get found?..Mike was my vocal hero and a great songwriter..the only good thing to come out of Mike's death is people getting together to celebrate his ability..like here..I hope he knew how loved and respected he was
Mike was and is sadly underrated. He should be in the hall of fame...period. The group was criticized for using backup musicians,,, so did many other groups of the day The wrecking crew was in most groups.

I doubt they'd played it since the Headquarters sessions. They took requests from the audience that night, this was probably one of them. Cuddly Toy was played live for the first time at this show too.

Wouldn't it be great if someone sometime could restore Nesmith's original live vocal for CSky? For over 30 years, I've wondered what it might have sounded like.

Why does it seem like Peter always appeared to feel the need to ham it up when he was 'on' to the point of verging on obnoxiousness. It's even more obvious on the Hy Lyte interview clip where we see him behave as though he's amped on amphetamines.
Maybe Micky was like that on the TV show, but not in real life. George Dolenz taught him better than that (read about his life and career sometime - it's interesting.) Peter, on the other hand, was spoiled by his wealthy Connecticut parents, so it was always "Me! Me!"

This is better than expected for four guys who were not a band 2 years earlier. Mickey Dolenz especially sounds like a fairly decent drummer.

I think I read somewhere that in the latter years of his life, Mike came to embrace his Monkee legacy. I think he did know how much he was loved.
Jann Wenner is the sole reason The Monkees haven't made it to the RnR HOF. Even though he isnt the president anymore, his influence remains.
