  • This is a guided practice, designed to go along with this practice track:
    • Playing With Chords 0...
    Also, I strongly recommend using note-name scratch paper so you can practice seeing these chords on the guitar neck at home.

    If you want to learn more about my online guitar school:
    www.scottpauljohnson.com/patreon
    I've got 180 lessons uploaded so far as well as over 50 creative writing challenges and an archive of over 90 live Q&A sessions. I'm always working on new content and working to make my Patreon community as welcoming, engaging, and fun as possible. Come check it out!
    This lesson is designed to give you something fun to work on without having to learn technical terms like "the tonic triad, the subdominant triad" or the names of different voicings like "first inversion" or "second inversion." You don't even have to know what it means to be "in the key of E Major." I was hoping to give you some complex things to consider but in a creative package.
    I think too many teachers have traditionally said something like:" "You want to have fun and be creative with music? You have to be miserable for a few years first. Then, if you're still so excited about music, you will have earned your opportunity to be creative." In my opinion, it's usually better to start by being encouraging and giving tools for creativity without too much explaining. Then, the student can find questions to ask, giving momentum and purpose to learning music theory. Music Theory doesn't dictate what ought to be. It merely describes what has been up to this point.
    I hope you enjoyed this "Playing with Chords" episode. If you post a video of yourself jamming to the jam track, feel free to tag it with #playingwithchords01 and #scottpauljohnson

    I've come across your Pentatonic scale and CAGED videos a few weeks ago. Those videos blew my mind and broke a wall that stopped me from advancing in playing guitar solo. Now, I can somewhat play some solo using Pentatonic scales and still experimenting. I love how you include super helpful, real-time visuals on the guitar fretboard in your lessons. It really helped me understand the lesson much quicker compared to having my brain wrecked, trying to put up imaginary dots on my fretboard. Thank you so much for giving out these superb lessons. • @iAmMattN
      @iAmMattN Рік тому +3

      Oh yeah, barre chords are hard to get down. I've found over time, that three string chords sound better and feel better.. (especially when playing with a bassist) maybe emphasize playing those shapes across the fret board (up to fret 12) smoothly and with a metronome or backing track. Try thinking of barre chords as lower on the totem poll of priorities.

    • @TheSulfer
      @TheSulfer Рік тому +1

      Oh wow I really didnt think of it that way@@iAmMattN that's a really sound advice thanks!
      I just realized I'm hurting myself trying to make barre chords sound good and also makes me frustrated

    • @ifensler
      @ifensler Рік тому +1

      @@TheSulfer I remember when I was learning barre chords, it helped to just look at exactly what notes your first finger is playing. Because once you realize you don't really need to barre across all the strings and it's really only 1 or 2 that matter, it becomes so much easier. Also, I know some people have better luck wrapping the thumb around for those chords, but I decided to just learn both 😂 they both have their time and place. But like the other guy said, it's probably more beneficial to focus on your triads. More practical and really help with your theory. Once you connect your triads to the scale positions and arpeggios, your playing will explode!
