Focusing on the E shape bar chord, I talk about practice methods and techniques for avoiding pain and building strength. I also talk about thumb placement for better stretch and hand strength, index finger placement to help make chords ring clear, and wrist angle to not hurt your carpal tunnel.

Really like this dudes style. No gimmicks, no distracting bs, just straight to the point in a no bs approach. Well done sir and thankyou once again.
This guy is a good teacher
This guy's teaching style and patience is amazing
Best teaching technique salute
Yes he is
YES he is
You don't say😏
Dude you have just increased my Barre chording by a thousand. I'm barely putting pressure on my index and all strings ring. You have by far did what know one else could do and that was explain how to place my index properly without wearing out my hand.
You’re the best guitar teacher I’ve ever come across. God bless you abundantly
Been playing bar chords for 40 plus years.. I STILL learned something out of this. You really have a gift to teach my friend. I appreciate how you make us all feel equal to you in spite of the fact that your guitar skills are superior. Thanks for all your help. Good for us intermediate players cuz you reinforce the things we've learned right. And I can learn where I was taught wrong or made some bad habits along the way.
This was THE lesson on Bar Chords for me! The idea of first placing the thumb on the 2 upper strings, depending on which spot it feels te easiest, was the solution for my problems.
Dude, My dad was a professional musician his entire adult life, and I'm 46 now and I've learned more from your videos in ONE DAY than I did from him these last 40+ years. DUDE KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!
I’ve watched so many videos about learning bar chords, and this has been the biggest help. I was getting a bit unmotivated to keep going, but this video put me right back on track. Thanks so much! :)
That one single tip of trying to place the thumb away from the index finger helped me so much, playing barre chords hurts so much less now.
Omg. I've been struggling with bar chords for nothing. I'm a week into playing guitar and that just improved my playing tremendously.
this is amazing and so are you! I just started guitar and was getting frustrated with my bar chords and this... THIS... thank you.
It's really good testimony
great stuff, i got to give you some credit , the way you put this stuff across, even a pigion brain ..peck n look.. like me can get you, i used to have a hard time at bar chords, not anymore. cheers Scott.
Omg! I was trying to play the F Bar chord on my own for a couple weeks and this video changed my habits so fast and well that within ten minutes my F chord was already ringing out. Fantastic video!
Hey Scott, you're on a winner here. Your video lessons are really clear and concise, and are benefiting my progress no end. If you have the time, I would encourage you to get more involved with these lessons/tutorials, and with help from loyal subscribers in spreading the word, I'm confident they will become really popular .... good luck mister!!
Phil - Thanks for the encouragement! I’m getting ready to make more videos soon!
Literally the best guitar teacher. Not a show off.
Thank Scott. I’ve always enjoyed listening to you lecture!!!
It's shocking how good this channel is vs the amount of videos. I've watched several barre chord videos, this is the only one I've ever found really useful to explain a lot of the struggles I have with barre chords. Thanks a lot!
Incredible quality in the production alone and really valuable to someone who has been away from guitar-playing for a while!
Mate, you make sense of things. The 'why' is so important. Love this.
This is the best bar chord Video I’ve seen yet! Very thorough and he takes the time to show each step clearly
This is the most insightful video I've seen about bar chords. I love how you give a tip and explain the rationale behind it, and your relaxed and not pretentious way of teaching. THANKS dude!
I really love your videos. They are so clear and straight to the point.
You seem to understand all that a beginner goes through… thumbs up 👍 🙌
I really love this guys method. Lays it all out in a nice straight line. Thank you!
WOW! This is not only instructive - this is literally revelation! Really!
Another great video. I learn more in your videos than anywhere else. I absolutely love your style, just pure information, no gimmicks.
I agree 100%. He is an excellent teacher! Please continue to teach us all!
Your teaching style is very similar to an old intructor I used to have for marching band, and I absolutely love it! You’ve helped me accelerate my barre chord progress!
This is the best explanation of how to make barre chords i’ve ever seen! Thank you so much! I have to get better at these and your techniques will help me get there.
I love you man!! Just watched your pentatonic video and realised that now many things became clear so I had a look on your channel and to my pleasant surprise I discovered this video regarding bar chords. I'm not exaggerating saying that I'm moved that I finally managed to strum my first bar chord. Please make more videos, guitar players around the world need people like you!! Take care and enjoy music!
Art from London
Im amazed at the video itself. Lovely production. Luv your tutorials
I recently ran across your channel and find I comprehend your videos much easier than many others I've watched. I've printed some of your pdf material, thank you for those. I notice there hasn't been a video posted for a while. I hope you're still gonna help us. I've just watched your Songwriting #1 video and now I'm motivated to attempt singing and maybe and writing songs. I appreciate your effort, knowledge and ability to communicate so well on UA-cam.
I've watched a bunch of videos trying to learn bar chords and this was the first one that made sense to me. Thanks!
Your videos are fantastic - thank you for helping me understand scales and chord progressions, and this video gives me some guidelines for practicing chords in general. Simple stuff, but someone just starting (like myself) is sort of just drifting around and you're videos are encouraging and gives folks well thought guidance. Thank you again for your videos!
I cannot wait for more content. You are an amazing teacher.
Scott you have just changed my whole guitar learning experience ❤️
Instant subscribe. I've been practicing just one or two bar chords around a couple weeks until I gave up (because of the crappy sound and pain) and continued practicing open chords changings...now I watched your video and everything you said makes sense! Thanks for all these tips, me and specially my wrist and thumb appreciate it! 🔥🤘🏼
I been putting off my bar chords for way to long and started looking for some help and inspiration and this video is the best I've seen yet, I'm going to have to watch it multiple times to take it all in, very much appreciated thank you! I will be checking out the rest of your videos as well.
Perfect explanations! Thank you from Casablanca :)
I have decided to follow all your videos cause I really need someone who explain like you!
Please more videos because you are very good teacher!
omg ive been struggling with barre chords for so long and no videos helped except this one, thank you so much
It's time for another video!..you just breathe life into my guitar playing! You're the best UA-cam ever..i promise you..you will be everywhere in little time! Top notch content! Love from India!
You are seriously the best guitar resource out here on UA-cam! It took me waaay too long to get the F chord but it’s becoming way more solid now! Thank you :) aaaah
I like your bar chord tutorial, especially the tip of fretting the chord as many time as you can in a minute. Very helpful. Occasionally I would slip in a open chord as if I'm playing a song. Good job sir
Once again, a fantastic video. I've been on this journey a little over 3 years now and I still picked up something useful.
Hell yeah. Thanks
Can tell this guy is a good person also a great teacher. Thanks for the videos!
I wanted to thank you for your tips on bar chords. After spending some time following your advise it's been a big help.
Excellent tips, Scott.
Thank You Scott that's were I always put my thumb was lead to believe I was wrong what your saying makes so much more sense🎸
Great teacher and great production bro. Very helpful for us! Rock on!
This was very helpful. I’ve been playing for years and haven’t felt like I’m improving. These tips are more valuable to me than anything I’ve been doing by myself. I noticed my hand cramps up well before I get through any Ed Sheran song and I’m trying to get more relaxed. But your tip about getting my index finger higher on the neck and focusing pressure on the upper and lower strings on the e shape was huge, thanks!
thank you so much.this is the best tutorial ive seen so far. really helped a lot. All the best to you sir!🎉
Your knocking it out of the park! Nowhere have I seen this explained before.
The best guitar lessons I have seen online. Very easy to understand and demonstrates super practical tips to really expand your skills. It’s crazy how much knowledge is unlocked in a short amount of time. If your looking for a good teacher this is the one.
Been looking for a good way to practice bar chords, they have been my biggest roadblock to continuing guitar since I was a little kid! Thanks so much, I feel like I have the tools and motivation to get through it this time!
Thanx for that. It's almost as if you know what goes on in the mind of an aspiring guitarist and how to resolve any encumbrances.
Well said!
Really enjoy your channel! Your videos so far are the perfect length for me to learn one thing and then just focus on it in my own time. Also just so, so, deeply appreciate your on-screen personality. You seem like someone I'd actually want to talk about guitar with, and not one of these high-wattage UA-camrs with the charm of a Disney channel actor.
Thank you. So many other tips I saw ended up making them worse and hurting my hand. Yours is the first video that helped my wrist pain!!
Thank you! These conditioning tips totally helped so much. I’m a pianist and not knowing about them placement was hurting my wrist...can’t afford to have injured wrist! So I appreciate your tips!
Finest teacher! I have never been so clear about guitar in my life ever. Well i need to practice a lot but now i know how to do it... thanks a lot 🙏
Soooo helpful! I love this tutorial, thank you so much for making it🖤
Your videos are amazing, thank you!
Best teaching video I have seen on barre Chords yet. Just subscribed!
Recently found your channel. I have been struggling trying to keep my thumb directly behind my fingers on the neck like so many others say to do. My thumb tries to go the way you show naturally. I'm definitely following your advice as it works and makes complete sense.
Thank you! This is more than useful! I mean: I am already making progress while listening! So glad to have found you... Keep going with your work! :)
Excellent lesson, Scott.
Using your tips I was actually able to play a barre chord that didn't suck! I like your teaching style. It's very motivating and the instruction and camera angles make it clear.
the best and the most explaining lesson for bar chords ive found. thank you!
THANK YOU - TONIGHT A CORNER HAS BEEN TURNED THANKS TO YOU Scott - that thumb position and your suggestion to place and replace first and correct later has been like switching on a light bulb - amazing!
This is the most helpful video I’ve seen on bar chords. Thank you so much!
Very thoughtful and deliberate instruction. Subscribed based on this video alone.
Hey Scott! I love the channel! Thanks!
Very good advice and clear examples in a step by step manner for placing the index.
Lots of good help. Thank you!
Practicing the shape quickly even if it's not perfect yet works great for me! I think I'm progressing, thank you.
great tips .... your a great teacher... it almost seems that you once were a student too !!!! ehehh ... cause you explain in such a clear and effective way ... like we were chatting among friends .... and that's amazing ... being understood so easily by (almost) everyone ... that's amazing for sure ... its a "gift" ... thanks for that ... i'm enjoying a lot your lessons and tips ... bring it more, pleaseee .... Greetings from Portugal
Dude this is the best lesson i ever seen for practicing the old death to the hand and arm bar chords thanks you have inspire me to try them again and not let them kick my @$$ this time.
Full of really good tips! Thanks!
Another example of how this channel is better than other guitar teaching channels: they all say F bat chord is hard at first, and it is for new people, bit this is the first time I've heard it brought up that only new people try to hold the chord FOR SO LONG AT A TIME! I'm not new. I've played 4 hour sets in too many bars to remember, but even still... I relax the muscle as often as i flex it. Great video
that one thumb trick really helps, i just hold it as far up as possible and its sounded so much better already thanks man
Great advice! This video has some answers I've been looking for. Thanks!
Totally different explanation on barre chords I have seen. LOVE IT.
I've learned more in just a few videos than I've learned in every other guitar lesson. Understanding the triad and finding the same chord all around the guitar, mind 💥💥. Light bulb definitely went off
Best barre chord advice I've found on YT so far. 👌
Dear Scott...You are pretty GOOD Teacher,,,,Hats off man!
Wow, what a great tutorial! I was struggling in this particular area only as I started my learning with open chords. Now, I have better understanding of how to switch to bar chords. Thanks Scott ❤
Liked and subscribed 😊
You and the teacher I'm learning from are the best. Thank you
I love your teaching style.
Super helpful info, as always
Thanks so much. I appreciate your realistic advice especially considering not injuring myself And not worrying about the sound at first etc al. Seriously I have not come across anyone else being so real about expecting a good sound for awhile
Good info, simply presented. Thanks, Scott. So much more useful than another how-to-shred-like so and so, vid.
That was a good tip about placing the index finger over the high strings first. It worked - and - it gave me confidence when the strings played true.
The best teacher for guitar on UA-cam - I FINALLY found him
The one guy who breaks guitar down exactly how I need it to be taught to me and it’s so visual; I love it!
Get this man to a million subs right now. You deserve it bro thanks 👍 much love and appreciation.
Awesome, I can't wait to try it out.
Best, most realistic advice I've seen! If you're currently learning this, look no further, and refer back to this as you progress.
Bars were the biggest hurdle for me. For a long time I had decided I just wasn't able to do it. Very frustrating! I wish I had stuck with it a long time ago, because now I know that if you persevere, you WILL learn to do it. It does take a lot of practice but it is so worth it. Trust me, if you keep at it, and don't worry about the sound quality, (it will come), it will become easy and painless.
This video really helped me out. I've been playing guitar on and off for many years and being unable to practice bar chords effectively has really inhibited my skill development. A big part I was missing was that I was not letting enough of the top of my index finger hang over, which was causing muting of the thinner strings! Thanks so much!
This was really helpful! Every other tutorial i have watched has said the complete opposite of what you said, like the thumb needs to be in the middle of the other fingers or to keep plucking every chord but just move the fingers slightly enough until it sounds good. But after trying what you said; leaving the thumb in a natural postition, and then taking the hand off and forming the chord multiple times, made everything sound a lot better and hurt less. Thank you!
Thanks for the tips. You’re a great communicator! Hello from Barbados!
Good advice, thanks Scott.
Had to come back to say I’ve been trying bar chords for the last month and half and it has been a struggle. This is me day one of me apply his recommendations and the man is a genius, I sound a world better
This is the best video on barre chords. I have been struggling with strength for a while now and my forearm hurting (I have an old shoulder injury which hasn't helped). I love your practice tip - 1 mins of on off. The biggest revelation for me was the thumb placement. Even though I have very small hands moving it back to it's limit, 1cm has made a huge difference.
I knew correct technique was the only way I would be able to play barres easily. All along the watchtower here I come :-)
