This is Part One of my series on How to Solo on Guitar.
We start with how to make phrases: the foundation of a good guitar solo. Interesting phrases tend to have something quirky going on.
Then we move on to how to arrange phrases in sets - like ABAC - and how easy it is to create a lot of material from just one phrase.
From there we talk about how to morph an A phrase into a B phrase - by using a list of concepts - CHANGE, ADD, SUBTRACT, FLIP, RELOCATE
Then we talk about two ways to practice - one way is to commit to a set - like ABAC or AABC for example - and try to come up with a new A phrase every time.
Then we talk about the concept of EXPLORE - MORPH - RESET
Anyone else feel like crying because they've FINALLY found a teacher who explains things thoroughly AND makes it all so easy to understand? teaching style is unreal man thank you!!
I feel like crying all the time, and when watching his videos just a lil less
yes and i’ve been playing since I was 4 years old
Today I am! Im watching video's about learning guitar from Poland (my home), and i cant Play still. This guy od like GOD for me now.
@@marcinkalinowski7059 tak z ciekawości: wykupowałeś może jego lekcje?
His caged system made me alot better
I've watched like 20 videos on soloing and this blows them all out of the water
I think so
This man is single handedly increasing my skill in mere minutes more than I could do on my own
Not gonna lie, this is my second video of yours I'm watching and I seriously almost want to cry. S2g I'm not exaggerating. You have quite literally unlocked my 7th chakra or some shit. This is unbelievable. Things are just clicking into their place in my head. You're quite possibly the best teacher I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot, man. I can't thank you enough for this.
I'm going to binge all of your videos and seriously consider becoming a supporter on Patreon if you're still creating videos. You're amazing. Please, keep going. You have the power to inspire SO many people not to give up on the guitar. If I had stumbled upon your videos when I was younger, I probably wouldn't have quit playing at least 4-6 times before I finally got my shit together. Much love, brother.
ngl man, you said it better than i ever could, that 7th chakra shit hit hard
@@ebrahimjamshid8328 i cracked up when I read the 7th chackra shit. accurate af 😂😂
Dudee this man teaches awesome, best on all youtube literally. Is he still teaching? He hasnt uploaded videos. Whats that patreon thing?
@@MrBrenno25 Patreon is a website where you donate money for each video Scott Paul Johnson posts. He said that he is still making videos, but that is 7 months ago - we just have to be patient!
You said it for all of us Raphael. This video almost brought me to tears too..and unlocked something within my head. Now am so much more motivated to pick up my guitar and create a solo.. god bless you
Your teaching style is amazing, your camera set up is amazing too AND the editing work you put into this. Thanks for doing it dude!
Thanks. I'm working on part 2 of this video right now - not sure how many parts there will be yet.
thanks Matt, took the very words out of my mouth.
@@ScottPaulJohnson you are seriously underrated you've helped me with simple concepts that other people couldn't like the Pentagon scale I've never been a scale guy but you helped me start to work my way around it thank you
Scott Paul Johnson, Hey we just met on another video of yours lol, and I gotta agree with these guys. You’re a natural teacher and you genuinely helped me then a couple days ago and now. You’re videos are awesome and have helped me significantly more than all other YT videos and honestly maybe even better my guitar teacher! Don’t tell him I said that! XD
You definitely deserve more followers so people can see your awesome teaching style!
Matt Obando yeahh you are thinking it too . i like his lessons vid , more interesting than others ! 👍🏻
first time stopping in im a semi professional guitarist as i gig every week end as a lead guitarist i love your teaching style man. If this isn't a career for you it could be. Thanks for being awesome
Wow thanks! I'm hoping I can make a career out if it
@@ScottPaulJohnson I have to say I love your videos I just found out about you on here and subbed but I've learned much more than I have in a long time
@@ScottPaulJohnson Drop whatever your doing immediately (except for the video's) and focus on teaching music. Your a natural teacher and obviously love your craft. As soon as I can I hope to provide something back already and I just found your video's today! In person lessons for you would be a breeze your certainly on the right path.
I second this. Very well taught, man. Keep it up!
@@ScottPaulJohnson What!? Man, you are awesome. You may not be Tommy Emmanuel, but you are waay up there, both with your feel for the instrument and the ability to show us how to go find our own soul on the guitar.
There are a million videos on how to play the pentatonic scale, and then everybody just says, "so noodle around with that and find what sounds good." I have literally NEVER seen another video that takes "noodling" and turns it into a productive, practicable way to learn how to solo melodically. There is so much info here that other guitar teachers either just don't know, or don't know how to teach. Your videos are GREAT. Please keep it up!
Every time I watch one video of yours, something in my mind and fingers *clicks* and I understand something new. Thank you. Truly, thank you.
Thank you!!

Dude, your style is refreshing, seriously. You explain stuff in a simple way that's so clear to follow. Luv it man.
Thank you so much.
who says "you can't teach creativity" well you just did it beautiful scott way to break it down in Seattle
I've been playing guitar for 12 years now, spending the last 6 years as a touring musician and session player. I recently started teaching private lessons and I've been watching beginner guitar videos so I can become a better teacher for my beginner students. I stumbled across this channel tonight and I have to say I'm so impressed. You are hands down the best teacher I've found on UA-cam. Definitely inspiring me to bring these concepts into lessons for my students once quarantine ends. I've known all of this for years but never knew how to describe it to beginners until now. I always told people it was a "feel" thing because I never truly knew how to put it into words 😂 you have earned a new subscriber tonight, my friend. Keep up the good work.
Man, that was an excellent video! Really great presentation and editing, super useful information. Thanks so much!
Hands down the best lessons on the tube. The camera positions, the explanations and the text is great. Thanks.
Another Sooper one again!!! This is what I was looking for so many years .... loved it ... now my turn to start internalizing and take it somewhere nice .... Thx a Ton !!! 👍👍🎸
This has been my struggle for years. You were capable of opening the door I’ve been stuck behind! Thank you so much
I love the clarity and the structure of your explanations. Keep up the good work !
These videos are brilliant mate, really useful! Thanks
I quit guitar 4 years ago because I couldn’t find a good free resource for learning.
Your channel has inspired me to pick up the guitar again. You teach things other guitarists charge money for and you do it in such an easy to follow way.
Thank you 🙏🏽
How’s the guitar journey going?
Your videos are the most helpful ones I have ever watched. Your teaching style (combined with all the visual aids) is awesome! Thank you so much! You are really helping me.
I have learned more in watching like 3 of your videos than I have in years of other lessons and even music theory classes. Comprehensive and straight forward. Thanks a ton!
Man I've been stuck in the same level for years...i feel really interested and motivated to get better after your videos..amazing editing and setup ! Keep it up man!
Just recently found you. I've seen a lot of videos and the way you teach is the greatest experience.
You have a gift to teach!!
BIG UP! One of the best vids in hundreds I've seen on this topic.
I love this guys teaching style , currently binge watching your channel, taking notes on what to practice and what to get back to along the line.
The fact that this is free is amazing, you're an amazing teacher man.
Scott, so glad I found you.. I have learned so much !! the PDF's are great too!
Man your videos are always what I am looking for. This one is exactly the categorize labor I was seeking to understand soloing.
Hey Scott, I'd like to thank you for putting up guitar lessons here. This one was very useful for me. You bridged the gap for me. Keep up the good work.
I’ve been playing guitar on and off(mostly off) for 10 years. All self taught, and mostly acoustic.
After watching two of your videos, I have such a better insight and understanding of what’s going on. You are a great teacher, with great skills and very informative videos. You deserve more subs. Thanks for the help man.
Easily the best teacher I've ever seen.
Had to go out of my way to say I love your videos. You put things in a way that’s so easy to comprehend and practice and I don’t bored watching you like most of the other e-lessons on youtube.
You're an amazing teacher. Thank you for everything you do for aspiring guitarists!
It's been said before but your work is phenomenal.
You are gifted as a teacher and aVERY diligent editor. It seems like anytime I felt something was unclear an edit was there to clear it up.
Thanks for your hard work!
You already helped me with my intervals, now I FINALLY know what a phrase is! You're the first to explain what they ACTUALLY are! Thank you! You're a great teacher!
Can't say enough about these videos. They are excellent resources for me in between my lessons. Thank you for the time you put into these!
I was stuck for so long with the pentatonic perfectly memorized and this is mindblowing. Cant thank you enough! Cheers!!!
Thank you, I play guitar just for 4 years and I couldn't understand how to do a solo correctly.. now I can play a solo so easy and I like it.. thanks bro you are awesome
These videos are so unique, I hope you continue as you have a great way of teaching!
Thank you! I really appreciate that. I’m just getting into making videos and I’m excited to make more.
Thank you! I always look forward to coming home after work, having some tea and watching your videos with my guitar. I'm making so much progress because of your teachings. Lots of love from Australia. Awesome!
Here I am excited to improve my guitar and you have made me laugh, feel inspired and fall in love with music. Thank you
Mate, I hope you start making videos again cause I’ve just come across your channel and this video is so well done. Exactly what I was looking for!
Thank you, here’s hoping to see more from you.
This great! Extremely helpful!
DEFINITELY one of the most helpful series of videos on guitar ive ever seen thx!!
Hands down my favorite youtube guitar teacher! Thank you so much for this! Truly amazing, love the camera work and editing too
can’t believe this type of content is free to learn keep going Scott 🔥
This lesson is huge for me! I've literally been stuck for years at this point. Hopefully I can start to play more than just a scale now. I hadn't heard anyone explain or show how to construct small phrases. Thank you!!!
Dude you are a great teacher. I know a lot of time and energy goes into these so thanks for all the hard work! Also, don't change to get more out quicker.. We will all wait for your perfection. Keep it up.
You have got to be one of the best tutors on you tube. Your approach to teaching is fantastic. You simplify things that seem challenging at 1st. Thanks for your time and effort.
The music teacher I wish I had years ago already. Making up for lost time!
So I’m self taught and been playing over 20 years and of course it’s always very difficult for me to learn leads. I do not read music. But for some reason I just understand this. Idk why but I do! Thank you very much
Your videos are soo informative. One can really lean from your content and there's no trash talking. Really liked it
So glad I found your channel young man... I've learned more from you in the last 2 weeks then from all the in person lessons in the last 2 years...great work
I’m only halfway into the video but had to stop and say how awesome and effective your teaching and editing technique is. Normally in these kinds of videos I have to take several breaks in order to hold my attention but not with yours. And all the info with the editing is so effective
This is just flat out brilliant.
It’s a calm and relaxed way to “feel” your soloing instead of thinking about it.
This guy is a great teacher.
YOU ARE AMAZING!!! I have been months trying to find such an incredible tutorial of soloing.. you deserve the best
First time ever I comment a video on UA-cam since I have my account (15 years maybe?). Every one of your videos are just the light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you so much, brother.
This feels like the perfect mix of "feeling" and "technical" knowledge I needed to start moving again in my guitar journey. I feel like I've added tools to my playing to get to the next level after being stuck for some time. Thank you!
Thank you for taking the time to articulate how you appreciate this lesson. Means a lot to me
Wow man, you're a fantastic teacher.I really like labelling the phrases this way.Anyways thanks.
That was great! Loved the video layout with labels and guitar cam. Your explanations helped me unpack soloing and bust a plateau.
Dude I am so happy I found your channel. You're teaching style is amazing and video topics on point!! Thanks for the great content bro!
ACAB is my favorite one

"im not going to sing it for you" made me giggle at bit.
You explain things so much more clearly, easily but still with good detail than pretty much anyone else on UA-cam. And the presentation is fantastic.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make a proper video on this topic ! Greatly appreciated. I particularly love the split scenes.
Ive seen steve stine
But I prefer yours
❤️❤️
Dave Ramsey would say that you have the "heart of a teacher." I don't know what else you do in life, but this very well could be your calling. Thanks for the insanely helpful content.
Your teaching style is brilliant and reaching a shyt load of people and bringing the joy of music to people and for doing that alone you got to be commended . Helping people that may not have ever had their life changed by music . Mate good on you !
I saw this video yesterday and it has already made a huge difference in the cohesiveness of my improvisation. Thanks again Scott!
When we see those guys online demoing a guitar or amp or effect - they sell the product by playing with excellent phrasing. We automatically believe we'll sound like them if we have that product, but we often miss the fact that, their phrasing is selling the product. From what I've observed, if the phrasing is good, the tone and the amp and the guitar don't matter so much. The real guitar magic is great phrasing.
Well, yeah, but for people that can already play like that (and even for many that can't), the tone and amp absolutely do matter
😆😀👏🏾
Scott, I believe much of the nice sounds you are making come from hammers, slides and bends. Do you have instruction on those? I also realize that you are experienced and very fluid on the fretboard.
I have a video about that in the pipeline!
Truly the most amazing teacher I've found on youtube, you are killing it! Thanks for sharing!!
Your videos never disappoint. The superimposed images are excellent and your casual chill attitude toward music theory is very disarming. 5/5!
Excellent lesson, I've been playing for years and this just clicked so well into my head! Thank you....
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. What an incredibly valuable lesson!!!! Thank you for the magic that you’ve put into the detail: the video setup, excellent editing and letting us see exactly what you’re doing. Absolute gold. And you human’ness - So natural and just real. Inspirational. Thank you, Scott.
Literally opened my third eye. Thank you soo much. Keep helping us.
We will keep supporting you❤️
I love this!!! I have been looking for someone to break down theory and concepts like this for LITERALLY YEARS.
This is the single most valuable tutorial I have seen on soloing. Awesome awesome!👏🏽👏🏽
This video was ... kind of nice. Seriously, VERY helpful! Thank you! Glad to have found you!
This feels amazing because you're the first and only teacher that made me think of phrases like that. It's also the clearest way I could think of understanding it.
Thank you....the one video I've been looking for for so long, Kudos! this is very helpful..
Your language skills are amazing. Thank you so much SPJ, for another amazing video. You rule!!
That was a really good video Scott! You teach so well dude! It's like I can watch and not feel as though I'm being taught and that says a ton. A free flowing guy that's not afraid to explore with his vid students. Very nice man.
Scott you made things so easy to learn and explained them like no other person on UA-cam
Thank you. You have a real knack for providing useful stuff, and your video technique is second to none. I'm subbed.
Awesome. Best explaination videos for soloing i have seen so far!
You are such a good teacher. You really are. I hope you get very rich doing these videos because you really deserve it.
Thanks man i picked up my guitar again today after a long time cuz i always get stuck and dont feel i progress but today i saw your pentatonic scale video and it was so clear and easily explained it just all clicked in my brain and ive been jamming to backing tracks for hours having fun with the scale and finding where i can add extra notes outside the scale that still fit. Awesome teacher
Scott - your teaching is cool - teaching complex subjects so easily is pure talent !!!
So awesome. I just bought my first electric guitar after years of acoustic strumming, and you’ve made me want to get soloing. Amazing work! Thanks so much for the time you took to do all your vids!
You make this kind of practice more specific!
Really helpful!
Thx
Your videos are actually making me understand how the guitar works and how the notes work! Thank you!
Just found you Scott, truly inspiring, thank you. Simple and easy to follow ideas. Keep up the good work for us fellow guitarists who need an extra push now and again.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! one of the best tutorials i have ever seen on youtube
One of those organic smiles that you feel release dopamine and serotonin is what I get when I watch your videos
