does the s5 have an awb-lock option? the way sony has since the a6400 and fujifilm with at least the xt3-xt4 cameras. the lock meaning it uses awb to automatically detect the wb, but then when you start recording it remains locked at that detected value. in real life situations, i find it oftens is not fast enough to do any kind of manual wb, because even with a white wall or something at hand it still takes time to set the wb, and when you want to film something quickly it really is not convenient at all.
For run and gun, yes haha this works well. I’ve even been talking a small white and a grey card with me so I can place it down in location and grab a wb because the card is approved white. Grey for IRE exposure if I get time to check. I do it mostly by eye now so I don’t use my grey card as much.
Hi - bit late to the party here but thanks for a very straightforward and useful video. Unfortunately I've run into a problem with my S5. I follow your instructions to get to one of the custom WB options and ensure that a white surface is filling the centre square on the monitor, then press the set button. But then I receive an error message - 'unable to proceed - the scene is too bright'. I've tried all sorts of things to reduce the brightness of the scene - reducing ISO, faster shutter speed, ND filter - but without success. Any ideas? Thanks!
So reducing the exposure still comes up with the same issue? That's a new one for me. If reducing the exposure still gives you an error message I'd jump onto one of the Lumix facebook groups and we can see if we can diagnose it as a group
Great video on setting the white balance on the lumix s5, The only thing I was wondering after I set the. White? Balance. How can I find or see what the Kelvin number the Camera set it to I only ask because I have another camera that I wanted to match the kelvin to I appreciate it thank you.
You can’t unfortunately on the original s5. The new s5 ii has an option when using AWBL where you can see the kelvin value. Be aware also. White balance can vary slightly between camera brands. So 5600 on a Sony will look slightly different to 5600 on Panasonic.
Does this work the same when you shoot real estate videography as I have tried this but my white balance is looking blue once I mover away from the white item I used ? Any help would be much appreciated as I am trying to lear shoot but this is the main thing I can't seem to do right
It definitely does. You just need to choose something white that the main source of light is hitting. I'll often use the ceiling or a white wall but I stand back and take in a big section of the wall or ceiling as I do it. Sometimes when you have multiple coloured light sources you need to do it a couple of times to look right but you can always get it looking good.
I have used this a lot with my Lumix cameras but since I started using multicam I found it easier in post if I had manually set all cameras on 5600. Is there a way to custom wb and see the actual K so I can communicate that to the other shooters?
Thank you. I love short and sweet. Perfect.
Thanks, that was what I was looking for.
Glad I could help

Yep I don't bother with grey cards anymore. Anything that looks white to the eye will work well!

Whybdonsome people use grey?
Middle grey still white balances correctly if using a calibrated grey card
Hey bro...when I'm pressing WB on my Panasonic g9t
It is opening a different menu where I can set the WB myself...the. Custome WB setting is not there
I'm not sure sorry! This is specifically for the S series cameras and I know it works in the GH cameras too but I'm not sure about the G series.
Excellent tip, a noobie thanks you.
Glad it helped

when I press the WB button on the SIH, it just brings me to a screen asking me if i want the Filter Effect on or off. any ideas?
Do you have the mode dial set to movie?
i got it. it turned out I must have accidentally changed the customization of the WB button while in the menu. thanks
Ah that makes sense! Easy to do

Unfortunately there’s no way I’m aware of to find out what K it’s actually setting it to
