    Thanks for posting this detailed set up guide - glad to see youalso got caught out setting Custom modes to 1/40th s shutter speed. Same thing happened to me. Just goes to show what can happen with tiny dials and tons of settings on a small screen. If you live in a region where your AC current runs at 50Hz (whole Europe and most likely other PAL countries), switching to NTSC will cause you flickering problems whenever you shoot somewhere where they use fluorescent lighting, and no, shutter speed will not always solve this.

    • @RoryandCasey
      @RoryandCasey  3 роки тому +1

      Hey! It is directly related to shutter speed not fps. Changing to something like 1/100 shutter speed will, in 99% of cases remove the flickering completely. I film a lot of weddings in really dodgy lighting and I've never found a place I can't remove the flicker by adjusting the shutter speed.

  • @masbass1011
    @masbass1011 3 роки тому +1

    Panasonic should have made this. Excellent

  • @KevinMullarkey
    @KevinMullarkey 2 роки тому

    You should set NTSC/PAL according to your country format, i.e.NTSC (60) for USA and PAL (50) for Europe. This is to avoid the flickering you will get off the mains cycle (50hz in Europe and 60Hz in USA) from man made lighting.

    • @RoryandCasey
      @RoryandCasey  2 роки тому

      Yes and No. I'm in PAL but I have it set to NTSC so I can get 60fps. Indoors I just set the shutter at 1/100 to remove flicker and there is really zero difference in the motion blur. I'm always working on a 24p timeline pretty much so it allows me to set it at 40% speed instead of 50%. There are definitely times to stick to it but for most of my work I don't need to worry about it.

    great video! do you find that the wobbling in the camera even when it is off bothers you at all? It seems odd when tilting the camera left to right or forward backwards just a little that little wobbling inside makes it feel cheap.. or as if something is broken/loose. I tested this on a sony A7 III while tilting it slowly and quickly and it did not have that wobbling and made the camera feel more sturdy

    5:00 "as soon as you hit record for whatever reason works" its because your Continues AF is set to MODE1 change it to MODE2

    • @RoryandCasey
      @RoryandCasey  3 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately that isn't the issue. It changes nothing. I suspect that the issue is the signal is a low res signal when not recording which softens the contrast lines and then once you hit record the signal becomes full resolution and the camera can read those areas of high contrast better.

    • @ParsclickTV

    Fantastic walkthrough! Many Thanks! Got a couple of questions though.
    Would the sound be recorded in slowmo? (120 and 180 fps) ?
    Is the cropping in slowmo a significant loss in terms of image quality?
    Bonus track: is it possible to shoot stills WHILE recording? (I believe GH5 could do that)
    Thanks again!

    • @RoryandCasey
      @RoryandCasey  3 роки тому +1

      No worries thanks for watching!
      In S&Q mode (super slowmo) sound isn't recorded. Which is fine because really you shouldn't be using that mode unless it was for a very specific purpose. Also be aware that in S&Q you only get 8bit colour at a much much lower bitrate (24Mbps as opposed to 200Mbps for 4k60). At 120fps I find that the image is still very useable in my wedding films however they can't be pushed very far in post so I film them in a CineD picture profile as opposed to VLog which I am using more and more now. 180fps basically takes the same image and crops in on it making a pretty poor quality image.
      As far as shooting while recording.... The S5 has the same 6k photo mode that the GH5 has which was the 'hack' to get it to take stills and video at the same time.
      Remember though that if you are filming to the correct 'standards' then you should be getting some motion blur on moving subjects which will mean when you pull one of those frames if there is movement it may not be sharp.
      Hope that answers everything!

    • @martagalanoficial
      @martagalanoficial 3 роки тому +1

      @@RoryandCasey now that was quick. thanks!
      I missed to mention that my question about quality loss was regarding 4K 60 (I already presumed that 120/180 would be a significant downgrade)
      About stills, you are right, motion blur would affect, but having the still option in a wedding (when couple stays just quiet) is something I really am atracted to.
      All the best!

    • @RoryandCasey
      @RoryandCasey  3 роки тому +1

      I would steer away from trying to capture both at once, generally what makes a good image doesn't make a good video and everyone that I've seen try to do both in one day has performed sub par at both of them. This is why I always insist that there is a designated videographer and a designated photographer because I know that the quality will diminish for both if one tries to do both. That my personal opinion anyway 😂

    • @raksh9
      @raksh9 3 роки тому +1

      @@RoryandCasey I dislike being asked to shoot stills and video in equal proportions, too. Stills and video require a different mindset, and switching between them can be tricky, especially during a high pressure situation like a wedding or other important event.

    Great and helpful video. To help not criticise, maybe have gone a little slower when selecting the menus. If this is appealing to new users (guessing: most of the people watching it) then they don't know where these buttons are, while you do. So don't zoom through at the speed light but tell them where the buttons are. You did this slow to begin with but then in the last minute you were so fast and even missed a few locations. you'd get a much higher click rate if you did this. Other than that, most of it very helpful. Thanks for making it.

    • @RoryandCasey
      @RoryandCasey  3 роки тому +2

      Honestly it would depend on what you wanted to use it for. As a UA-cam camera the ‘kit’ lens is actually incredible. Probably the best kit lens of any camera I’ve ever used. At its wide end it is great for vlogging or landscape/real estate and at the long end it would be great for street photography or some close up b roll.
      For more professional work the sigma series glass is great. I love the 35mm 1.4 is an amazing lens.
      For my pro video work I’m a big fan of vintage fd lenses. They are still great quality but a little softer and more character than modern lenses.

      @@RoryandCasey yes that what I mean, but is there a way to use it with the shutter? And what about usong contant AF with manual enabled. I basically want to use constant AF but being able to use MF if it becomes unreliable...

    • @RoryandCasey

      I don't think you can use it with the shutter as far as I know. Once you go to back button focussing you'll never want to focus with the shutter button again, way more control.
      As far as manually focussing while in af... In the menu, go to the little cog under the movie camera and in the af settings there is a setting called AF+MF turn that on and you'll have the ability to make tweaks to the focus while you are recording and the peaking even comes up for you while you're focussing.

      Not necessarily. It’s more to do with shutter speed than FPS. For instance here in aus when filming 60fps you can get some flicker or banding when filming at 1/125 shutter but completely disappears at 1/100 is still fine to use in my opinion.
