In the UK, I found out the best pitta bread to use for making Hawawshi is Warburtons "easy to fill" whole meal pittas. You can buy them from any major supermarket. They are slightly more on the expensive side but for me, it's worth it.
Just gave this recipe a try. Opted for baking it. Mind blown. So good. No idea how it stayed crispy inside the parchment in the oven. Thank you for the recipe.
I’m British in Bahrain, my Egyptian friend made these last night (odd that this video popped up today); we got the bread from an Egyptian bakery, the result was yummy
Yet another absolute winner. I made a ton of those arayes from the last recipe and froze them after cooking for easy reheated meals. They were superb after a re-crisping in the oven or pan.
Another amazing recipe! I always eat this with my family and Egyptian and never knew how my aunties make it! Gonna try and make this in the UK now thanks to you Obi! Keep up the amazing work 🔥👌🏽🇪🇬
Just want to say a massive thank you for sharing all these wonderful recipes. I love Middle Eastern food and I’ve tried a few of your recipes already. They have all turned out superb with a big thumbs up from all the family. I’ll keep working through your fantastic recipes. Thanks again 😊❤️
These look quite similar to arayes, which I learned about from another recipe on this channel. Those had baharat as the main spice mix and parsley instead of green chili in the paste. One of the best foods I've ever eaten, so I can confidently recommend this Egyptian version too even if it's a little different!
@@rowantharwat9195 To be honest as a person from the Gulf, arayes is definitely way more popular here in this region, most people have probably never tried hawawshi or if they did it was a one time only thing when they travelled to Egypt or something like that. I tried both and honestly you probably would like whichever one you grew up eating. For me that was arayes, but not all arayes is created equal, it can be really delicious or a bit underwhelming. I would say a main reason is the type of bread used to make it.
@@Utoob8 Used yo live in gulf too , its just because Shami restaurants are everywhere in gulf but not the Egyptian restaurants But Hawawshi was always there before Arayes
If you have a local restaurant/kebab shop that makes their own they might sell them to you. I get portions from a syrian kebab shop near me in Manchseter sometimes
Hey man, absolutely love your videos, I've made a handful of your recipes and they're amazing. As someone who grew up in Kuwait who now lives in America, you are a goldmine. One suggestion: please don't go super clickbait with the titles. Often when I'm looking for something to cook, I'll scroll through your channel to find a dish to make, and a title like "The Most ADDICTIVE Street Food In Egypt" doesn't give me any information about what it is. Having the name of the recipe in the title is super helpful and I'm sure will allow people to find it much easier if they're searching for "Make homemade x" or "recipe for x." They won't know if it's a recipe for Arayes if it isn't in the title. You don't have it in the description either.
@@uridechaco Ara'yes have a different flavor profile though. Obi is presenting the typical Egyptian way to prepare these, and calling them ara'yes would be inaccurate.
This is Cairo Style Hawawshi (yes that's it name), I refer Alexandria style more where the bread and meat cooked and backed together less greasy more flavor.
So when i went to Egypt we had a guide for the trip who took us to these overrated restaurants and we weren’t impressed by the food in Egypt thus far. But then we ditched the tour guide because they’re overpriced and not necessary and on our 2nd day got some of these. Mind blowing. We ate so well the rest of the time we were there.
I can't thank you enough for this recipe. It my favorite and although we have 2 good restaurant serving it I always think nothing can beat homemade food. Definitely will be trying In Shaa Allah.
while I've never had these, I've had kebab filled naan and roti, and those are so extremely tasty that I'm sure I'll have the same opinion on these. they look really nice
I did exactly as you showed but for the spices I just boharat mix and I wrapped them up in parchment and baked them…ohhh my goodness ,they are wonderful
Thank you very much for the recipe. I always wanted to make it at home. I never saw it being made, as it is mostly street food that my Mother never allowed us to have for fear of the meat quality... There was only one place years after that made them and I finally tried it as an adult after rave reviews and I am hooked ever since ... Thank you :)
Be careful, if you get pita bread, make sure you get the right kind, because some of them dont split in the middle properly and it is the most frustrating thing in the world
Reminds me of arayes, and there's also an interesting similar dish from Aleppo, called Toshka, basically meat and kashkaval cheese in a flat bread, with pickles and zaatar. different seasoning for the meat though
As an Egyptian,i can confirm that this is delicious, there is Another way it is the Alexandria way,you can buy it from Alexandria or you can make at home if you have the right ingredients the Alexandria way is very cool and delicious
true but as i mentioned in my comment he needs thicker bread ( 3eesh baladi ) and he needs more fat in the meat to make it jucier ,. and brush the bread with Ghee ( samna balady) or butter, egyptian here as well :) from Cairo though ;) Regheef el Amir nostalgia lol
I've done something similar using tortillas. If they're small I put the meat between 2 and if I have the larger ones I put meat on one half and fold it over. The way my wife reacted the first time I did them was enough for me to keep making them once in awhile.
I don't know why these aren't sold at any of the local restaurants - they look so delicious and appear pretty simple to make. Cheeseburgers are jealous of their Egyptian cousin.
This looks so good, thanks for the video. I’ve seen hawawshy made with dough where it bakes while the meat cooks. Curious why you chose the pre-baked version. Do they ever do that on the street? I bet it would be ridiculous with sourdough. I’ll report back 😎
very cool i once made this and flattened it out folding it a few times give me papesthin noodle-like sheets. try that one day ul thank me completely different taste
Just made these, and now I have a question. Do you serve these with any kind of tangy sauce? With the fatty meat and cheese, it needed some acid to balance the flavors.
Just tried this today and am VERY pleased although I did not use enough salt. The flavor was great apart from the little bit of salt I used but that was my fault. Will do this again for sure.😁

Hawawshi has it's own bread being Ish Baladi which is an Egyptian traditional bread but eh Pitta bread works too

The brand appears to be one called Al Maeda or Al-Maeda.
Yep it's Al Maeda, they're pretty good. I've struggled to find nice middle eastern pickles in the UK. These are made in lebanon
Thankyou
