I swear Weir's guitar playing has been revived since Fair Thee Well. He's been sounding especially clear and tasteful these past few Dead and Co tours, definitely better tone than anything I hear from him in the early 90's. Warms the heart, the guy has an incredible and unique approach to the instrument that too often was drowned in the mix or forgotten about
his singing too. not gonna lie his vocals at the FTW shows were rough. Dead & Co has really gotten him back into the groove i think and he sounds great now.
Completely agree, overall all vocals at FTW left a lot to be desired (Phil singing Eyes was tough). I think Mayer puts a fire under him because 70's Bob and John would have been quite the pretty boy competition lol. Whatever it is, its nothing but gold for us the fans.
Blame Healy. He was notorious for lowering Bob in the mix. So much so that it was one of the deciding reasons that led to his firing. Or so the story goes......
IMHO, these kinds of impromptu collaborations is what really makes the festival shows special. Improvisation is what the Dead kept alive over the decades while much of the rock world gravitated towards "play the album version", and it's what makes live performances worth going to all these years. (The jazz world never forgot this.) Thanks for posting Suwannee!
I adore the Grateful Dead, but that is wild hyperbole. Just because you have some nice voicings and inversions does not make you the greatest ever -- not even close. Jerry may be the best pure lead guitarist ever, but Bob played his part and had the personality and the enthusiastic singing.
Bobby played “lead rhythm guitar.” His style was almost completely unique. I believe he became the main orchestrator. He often led and “reminded” Jerry. He is definitely the best of something.
Feel it. It's circular. It's like a carousel. You pay the quarter, you get on the horse, it goes up and down, and AROUND. It's circular. Circle, with the music, the flow. All good things.
exactly! Eric Shay. I was surprised at what I was saying when I made this comment. I really do think he sounds good. I wonder if he has been taking singing lesson. No joke
Trey playing with The Dead has made him a different guitar player. Hearing him play so well acoustically with Bobby exposes a completely different dynamic regarding his style. It'd be wonderful if Phish did more acoustic sets.
Trey played much cleaner with a more mature, note-for-note proficiency with The Dead than he has with 3.0. He didn't rely on whale-calls & effects during the "Fare Thee Well" tour. Also, he had to adjust & compensate his timing to lock with Bobby. Listening to '16 Phish shows allows you to hear a new confidence in his playing from all the studying & work he did in '15.
How could there possibly one thumbs down on this gem? If this is a thumbs down, what would constitute thumbs up? This is better than any cuddly kitten folks. Never forget!
The only people who would thumb this down are the lame "Phish is just a rip off of the dead" or the "The dead are lame and old" kids. Trey is a masterful guitar player same with Bobby. I am more of a deadhead then a phish-kid but I can appreciate the love they both have for the music.
Nicest guy in the world. Went to school with Bob Weir back in 1962.at The Menlo School. Wonder if he has the old peg tuned Vega Fairbanks 5-string I sold him back then? Here channeling his inner Jerry Garcia.
love bobby's incredible versatility and love trey's tune here... none of my phish friends like it... bobby doing vox on 'miss me' at phish Nashville show blew me away... love that show w/ bob
@@jkweddingentrancesux i agree no. But trey is a much better singer than garcia, trey also played better guitar than garcia did 80% of the times, other than that when garcia was on fire, he was awsome.
@@jkweddingentrancesux Trey Anastasio is a better guitar player in nearly every technical way. You and your ilk sound like fucking clowns. Old jerkoffs like you know better than Bob Weir. Go fuck yourselves.
@@HaleysComet81 trey sucks. bobby plays w tons of people trey aint specials and he was at ftw cuz he would sll the most tickets and it was propsed by shapirowho is phish fan...dead heads hate phish..wish bobby would stay away but he wants fans and money so cant blame him
Trey cant touch Jerry's technique on acoustic guitar. song doesn't sound complete without the full sound Jerry achieved playing the lower register on acoustic. see any acoustic bird song with John Kahn for an example. I love Trey, but my god does this make me miss Jer
he started in bluegrass so yeah not to mention treys voice has improved but says himself jerry had most emotive voice you will ever hear. Tons of good voices jerrys is one its just so wholesome. Still loved liked it love song miss you
Nice to see tres manage to hit the accent beat fairly regularly and not f up the jam and the groove. Don’t get me wrong he’s always been a remarkable guitarist but the shifting time and accents was always a buzzkill
IMHO - trey's lack of familiarity with the dead's music/lyrics/feel/groove is again awkwardly apparent .. just like in the FTW shows. IDK why they want to keep collaborating .. i guess he draws a crowd. Mayer, on the other hand .. you can tell he is intimate with the music.
You are right about Trey drawing a crowd. What's important is for Trey to be the link between the Dead's music and Phish's (huge) audience. Which is to say the Dead want Phish to sort of embrace the Dead, and recognize the Dead were the blueprint for what has become the Phish phenomenon. Same with John Mayer. I think he's brought some of his audience over to the Dead side. You can hear Mayer fans make the most ridiculous comments about him being almost as good as Jerry, or he adds something that enhances the music, etc. The members of the Grateful Dead are trying to build on the legacy for generations to come. Now if Dead and Co. really wanted the best guitarist around, his name is John Kladecik. Personally I'll take Furthur over Dead and Co.
If I am not mistaken, Weir was encouraging to Trey to bring his own style to the Music. He isnt Jerry, is Obviously never going to be, but you could have said the exact same thing if you plugged Jerry into Phish. The only musical similarity is the improvisational element. As far as John Mayer goes, Between his play and Oteil channeling Phil Lesh, Dead and Co. are GREAT!! I say we dont critique, and let the music be what it was meant to be, a reflection of the musicians soul.

beautiful to hear him play Jerry songs

Seeing these two together is like some kind of fever dream that is the culmination of almost 30 years on the road with both of them.

Awesome!!! And for the dislikes, clean out yours Justin Beiber fans.

handsome squared, rough, unpolished perfection

Trey is really sounding like Jerry circa Radio Hall 1980 on the Bird Song jam. Love it!
um no.

I love it, bobby does not know the song takes him two bars and he's following and having fun... great guys right here!!!!
So sweet together and SINGING😊😊😊
He knows it at least a little bit because he sang it (presumably to Jerry) with Phish in Nashville on 10/18/16
Ryan Zaleski Trey wanted Bobby to sing the next verse but he totally forgot the lyrics so he points at Trey like "you sing it"lol
Actually Weir surprised Phish when he joined them in Nashville and broke out I Miss You so not the first time Bobby has played it
always exceptions to the rules.bob is a master of lyrical wonders. Love when he recognizes. And love when he doesnt
It would have been really cool if Trey sand Birdsong and Bobby sang Miss You.
Bobby sang Miss You recently with Phish. 10/18/2016 Nashville.
A+
I was expecting walking central park, singing after dark, people think I'm crazy....
those fingers ain't crazy and they're sure not Jerry's!
