I was at a show in 1981 at Rutgers where I was a student. When the Dead did this song, cracks of lightning and thunder appeared through the skylight at the RAC. Unbelieveable moment, even for a punk rock fiend like myself.
Magic. What you witnessed that night was magic! The magic of being alive, right there, right in the moment.
Timeless, sparkling and shimmering. Bob belongs in the pantheon of great songwriters, fer sure!

Brings tears to my eays - beautiful song, so much water under so many bridges. Song is strong still for me.
Perfect song then, laying in the arms of my first love. Guilty trip to a hotel room in Santa Cruz. What else could we do? The rain washed out our plans, and led us unknowingly to our future plan. She is 35 now. Our joy.
The song, brings new meaning on Jan days in Seattle. :-)

I fully agree, he still sounds great. His singing and writing was a major part of the Dead's greatness.
I love the rawness of this version of the song. "Raw" as in pleasantly natural, not polished like the version on his Ace album. Not that that particular version isn't good ( It's excellent actually), but its nice to hear something so beautify natural like this version. An unedited version not smoothed out by soundboard gimmicks.

I was in DC seeing a D&C and they were playing 2 fast tempo songs and then went into looks like rain and the whole place just went melancholy and everybody just sat at the same time
Bobs singing has gotten much better with age, he’s more relaxed and not trying SO hard which left him emotionally constrained as a vocalist.

One night at Henry J. Kaiser, a young fellow flying his butt off got spit on by Bob and thought it would be alright to take it out on me!!! Everyone immediately got a hold of that soul and sent him to the back of the building to cool down!!! What a Powerful Show! Kaisers were like that for me.
I'ld rather be in some dark hollow where the sun refused to shine then to be here alone knowing that you're gone and I am not at a show.

I have always loved this one. I never really respected or appreciated him. I still can't deal with Ratdog. I just started playing again and tortured myself with this, found out how to play it. So many changes, and some chords are only used a couple of times. Learn this if you want to better rhythm player.
