- Animal Collective is my favorite band of all time so it was only a matter of time until I got my dad to listen to them. I was very excited for this one! I don't think he was as excited

Today we are listening to Strawberry Jam by Animal Collective. In this video my dad reviews Strawberry Jam. My dad reacts to Strawberry Jam by Animal Collective. Crazy stuff guys!
#kylereid #animalcollective #strawberryjam
Thank you guys for watching this video! Go check out our discord if you want a cool place to talk about music - discord.gg/pUDzmnAU69
Also, I have a new UA-cam channel! Go check it out if you want to see me do silly things like see if an AI art generator can copy a Bob Ross tutorial and even fool someone into thinking that it's the original Bob Ross Painting - ua-cam.com/channels/g1Kf_MX_xYoUeT_i_Mzvgw.html
Awesome video. It was cool to see your dad digging for reverend green because it’s the first song I fell in love with from anco. Good stuff
I remember exposing my grandpa to a bunch of out there music in the car when I'd go over to visit and usually he'd be very open to a lot of the stuff I'd play. One time I had Sung Tongs going and halfway through Whaddit I Done he sighed and quickly turned the car stereo off and was silent the rest of the way home. Only other song to piss him off like that was Oxygen by Swans. Bless his heart.
That's really funny hahaha
I would do the same
I have a little job helping my dad in his office, wich is located in my grandfathers house, and luckily for me my dad has two very nice speakers with a turntable installed there, and he allows me to use them with complete freedom while I work, so I have basically indirectly forced my 87 year old grandfather, who only likes mexican music from the 50’s to listen to the whole To Be Kind album and he didnt really care about it
My favorite track from sung tongs... Lol
@@iamhereblossom1588 i'm scared of you
Do "I Forced My Dad to Listen to SWANS" next. I'm sure he'll love it.
JAJAJA
Oh ya he'll LOVE that
This but Filth
He'd have a BLAST listening to SftB
@@eliasmsv3156 As any reasonable person would
#1 is actually my favorite song on Strawberry Jam. It's just beautiful.
It’s like vaporwave but cool
love the vox on that one from both.
It’s like chocolate
I'd love to hear his reaction to What Would I Want Sky. Probably the most dad friendly anco track
I'd probably agree with you on that one
Maybe my alltime favorite AnCo song tbh
Dads do love the Grateful Dead
Such a beautiful song
i think most dad friendly anco track's gotta be "my girls," it's one of the most dad tracks i think i've ever heard in my life, actually.
Great...now make him listen to the early stuff
Spirit could be fun. I really want to do Sung Tongs
Spirit is easily my favorite Animal Collective album
@@KyleReidMu if you do spirit he's not gonna be able to be in any more videos due to severe tinnitus
DEAR ALVIIIIINNNN
@@KyleReidMu STGSTV
awesoe video kyle. im currently in an Animal Collective obsession so this was a treat to see, also cool to know they're your favorite band of all time! would love to see a holinndagain reaction
I'm glad you liked the video Adam! An Animal Collective obsession is the best obsession
from what i recall from the time, Reverend Green was a nickname of one of their team/friends that operated their lighting and sold merch at the booth. they also had a tumblr where they posted candid tour photos; eventually had to become password protected as members of the collected animals board would pilfer it. if anyone that was actually around at the time can help, feel free to post.
Your dad had the PRIVILEGE to listen to Animal Collective! Now have him listen to Person Pitch by Panda Bear!
The irony is that if your dad was even older, he would have probably appreciated this album more for its psychedelic weirdness. Most of the music Animal Collective were influenced by was 60’s and 70’s experimental psychedelic rock. Syd Barrett’s influence is all over this album, but your dad doesn’t strike me as the type of guy who knew any Pink Floyd before “Dark Side of the Moon”.
I'm probably around your dad's age (born in 1971) and AC is the band that stood out when I forced myself through a bath of music of the current millennium. Why did I need to do that? Because many of my generation think that pop/rock music ceased to be interesting after 2000, turning into the bland R&B or autotuned rap that reigns supreme these days. At some point I thought, hang on, there must be something (to be fair, I had already sorted out a few names, like Janelle Monae). I browsed through the Pitchfork and NME catalogs and came across this band. Now they're among my favorite bands of all time, well up there with the great innovators of the late 60s and early 70s (which I think is the greatest era of modern music).
One funny moment in this video is when your dad is upset with the suggestion that old people can't stand loud music. If anything, music is too mellow these days, not too loud!
Your dad being your dad and you being a big fan of AC, I reckon he will love it too after a while. This is not instantly likeable music. Especially the earlier albums take a few turns before they grow on you. He seemed to like some of it but it's hard to really get into something when you're being force fed by a fan. Anyway, great video and send this geezer's greetings to your dad!
"i only want the time to do one things that I like, I want to get so stoned and take a walk out in the light drizzle"
I sang that one so many times when I first heard it.
"Out tears are frozen diamonds so we smile when we're crying"
This band understands the sweet struggle and bitter ecstasy of being alive. This music gets closest to the heart of the human condition out of anything I've ever heard. "Kinda Bonkers" and "Floridada" feel like a campfire song with the entire world together.
Much love to you, your father, and anyone else listening to AnCo!
Wow that's a great description of Kinda Bonkers and Floridada
Cuckoo Cuckoo is about the miscarriage that Avey Tare wife had, it is such a heavy, sad and desperate song, kinda reminds me of stuff of their debut like Penny Dreadfuls or Alvin Row. This is my favorite on the album, Im fascinated by it
Holy shit I never knew that. That is really heavy. Thanks for letting me know
@@KyleReidMu That is an unfounded rumor. Neither Kria Brekken or Avey Tare have ever mentioned such a thing. The song is probably about existential dread/anxiety.
Reverend Green is I think a reference to a minor character in “Blood Meridian”, a novel by Cormac McCarthy. He appears in the first chapter and one of the major characters accuses him of molesting a child iirc and the public starts to chase after him. Afterwards, when people ask him how he knew Reverend Green and what he had done, he just says I dunno I never say the guy in my life. I don’t believe the connection means anything since I don’t see what the correlation is, I think it’s just a reference to the novel.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing!
Just stumbled upon this and really enjoyed it! Your dad's banter was cracking me up 🤣
I'm glad you enjoy it :)
Its not my favorite album of theirs but I think your dad has to hear Merriweather Post Pavilion to get the full Animal Collective experience. He might like it a bit more than this one I think, great video keep it up man.
yeah, it's their most accessible by far, and a lot of the songs are really informed by panda bear becoming a dad himself and sorta chilling out and sorting out what's important in his life. was just saying above that "my girls" is one of the most Dad songs i've ever heard, and i stand by that. love it to death for that reason tbh!
tbh i think everything they did from sung tongs through MPP was basically perfect.
Is Kyles Dad actually enjoying the music or is he just patient? Big question
Great question
he seems like a great dad, who tolerates his son. i wish his son would explain why he loves this instead of just showing it.
One of the best albums of all time. I wish I got to share it with my dad like you did. Very cool to see you grooving out on it even thought you've probably listened a bunch.
Would love to hear what your dad thinks about more recent stuff like Painting With or Tomboy or Cows On Hourglass Pond or PB Meets the Grim Reaper, or Time Skiffs or Reset. Keep up the great work!
the glow pt2 by the microphones. i think he might like it. would love to see it
This was the best thing I watched on youtube all day :D You guys really should have 100k views
Thank you :)
This was great fun! One of my favourite albums!
Would love to hear ur Da's thoughts on Feels, Sung Tongs, or MPP
Love your channel in general Kyle! Your Dad and you have a great on-camera rapport. Keep it up both of you! Love these vids.
I'm glad you're enjoying the videos! I really want to show him Sung Tongs
@@KyleReidMu if you listen to some of the live versions he intros in by repeating "now I lost my boy now I lost my boy" over and over again. It's really heartbreaking.
So wholesome! Your dad seems awesome and exactly the right amount of grumpy
Always happy to see AnCo get some love, awesome video!
Feels if he wants something more dreamy, MPP if he wants something more electronic and Sung Tongs if he wants something more acoustic. Even though Spirits is great, it might be too experimental. for now.
You and your dad nailed it with this one, Kyle! Sent the link to my daughter to see what she and Dave think.
Thanks Greg!! :)
Great video kyle! Keep up the good work
Thanks Boat :)
5:52 pretty sure that's just two guitars after watching videos of them playing it live recently. Deakin even messed up playing guitar at one point and the "synth" sound messed up. Avey plays that sharp cheddar sound and Deakin plays that little melodic part. Edit: 8:47 what?! I used to feel that way when I was younger but after reading the lyrics and hearing it live it's one of my favorites from the album. The song is apparently about not wanting to grow up too fast so your dad probably hit the nail on the head with this being meant for Noah's child. 14:19 Derek was Noah's dog as the song says "had a white and black little sheltie"
these reaction videos are very fun and your editing is creative :)
Thats a natural and very close relation with a father. My god, you're so lucky
i was thinking the same thing, damn
I'm surprised by how much he enjoyed this tbh. I love this album, but it is freaking bizarre and had to grow on me for a while
Ya I'm pretty shocked that he enjoyed it as well
you gotta show him spirit theyve gone it would be really funny
He would HATE it lmao
@@KyleReidMu try bat you’ll fly. it’s got some elevator music style to it
My dad loves panda bear. It makes me happy.
That makes me happy too
This is great. Dad's a funny guy and he really seemed to get Animal Collective.
yeah.. he would love Danse Manatee
lmao
Fun video, I think maybe showing him Feels next would be interesting
Love it haha :D
For things to listen to next... I think as far as albums go, Feels or Sung Tongs would probably be a very good choice to showcase what else they're capable of. However, I'd like to throw Fall Be Kind into the ringer. I think that might go over surprisingly well, especially What Would I Want? Sky (+ the Grateful Dead sample story).
I'm sure he'd really enjoy What Would I Want? Sky
You should show your dad The Glow Part 2 💀
I really need to do this
I would love to see what he thinks of My Warm Blood lmao
"There is no such thing as an innocent snowman." There is no wonder how you came out as well as you did growing up with a father sharing with you wisdom like that.
AnCo is also my favorite band! Love the reactions
You should have him react to more AnCo
as someone who also knows all the very random lyrics to most of their songs, i loved watching you lip sync and bob your head along 😩😩
great vid!! can u make ur dad listen to hyperpop next
lmao
have him listen to Bjork lol
This was hilarious. The proper version of pullhair rubeye or prospect hummer would be a great watch
Also, best lyric on this album was definitely cuckoo cuckoo: "my tears quench five feet of lawn, I just creep, I cannot yawn and people gonna come and people gonna cry, he just woke and dreamt and ate and died"
Kyle: this is my favorite band of all time
Car seat headrest: am I a joke to you
It's gotta be MPP man....I mean it's the album that changed Indie music...imo of course. Love these videos. Love a lot of these bands you're reviewing. Big AnCo fan. Big Black Midi fan. Love Bjork and Radiohead too.
I think MPP would be the best for the next-though I’d love to see Sung Tongs, Spirit, & Feels eventually
Honestly the song you said was your least favorite was easily my favorite, followed closely by fireworks lol
I've never been very into animal collective, probably because I'm not very fun lol/it always sounded cheesy to me, but listening to it "with other people" is helping me like it more, thanks for posting
You should keep giving their albums a shot! Sometimes it can take a little bit to get fully into them
Glad this one was reacted to... better than MPP IMO
The people dancing doing chores 😂
Tbh your dad has this Nick Di Paulo energy to him, funny guy!
mr reid with the drip 🥶
Perfect album to get his opinion on. This was super cool!
Yeah, this or MPP are probably the most accessible ones. Feels and Sung Tongs right up there with the calibre. Centipede Hz maybe not so much but still likeable. The albums before Sung Tongs are more experimental. I haven't even dug them all.
Have him listen to the golden child Merriweather Post Pavilion to see what he thinks of their more popular music.
since you showed him a high energy anco album, my vote is for something on the low energy side next. campfire songs would be amazing.
MPP
Feels
Time Skiffs
Sung Tungs
Spirit
yooooo your dad has an Arc'teryx piece on!
Never touched a substance in my life, even quit caffeine 20 years ago. Also Animal Collective changed my life.
Show your dad Sung Tongs. I would love to see his thoughts on that
My favourite band of all time too, please do meri post pav next
dad wearin da arcteryx
I would be interested to see ur dad reacting to the hotelier. interested in his opinion on emo revival lol
Now he must hear the Tongs
Gotta do merriweather and feels! I think dad would vibe with those albums!
Feels please! It's definitely one of their rockiest albums
You should show him Merriweather post Pavilion and person pitch. I feel your dad would like panda bears vocals a little more than Avery's.
I'd be very curious to see your dad's reaction to merzbow, who knows it might be his thing
you should make your dad listen to avalanches :)
This is so dadcore
You need to show your papa some Sufjan Stevens!
Would be swell if there were a reaction to Fishmans 19.12.28 with your dad!
As much as I'd love to do this... Idk if he'd want to sit through a 2 hour album with a 45 minute song lol
@@KyleReidMu come onnnn just try itttt he might love ot
I'm pretty sure Animal Collective was already dad music.
Merrifather Pops PA-villion
Real
I would never have someone start on strawberry jam, but since he likes it i GOTTA know what he thinks of sung tongz especially since it's probably way weirder
u should definitely show him time skiffs, it is way more dad core lmao
It's literally Animal Collective dad rock lol
Peacebone scared the hell out of me when I first heard it.
The first time I heard it was probably a little scared too but then amazed by the way the melody slowly starts to form and the vocals coming in
Do Time Skiffs with you Dad, since it's kind of Dad Rocky
These are great! Love from Sweden!
Thank you!! I'm glad you like them
omg you should make him listen to machine girl
Sung Tongs PLEASE
Great vid. I remembered the first time I heard this band. My mom hated this band!!!!!! She still does. A/C is literally one of the reasons I'm accepting of people and life
I loved taking too much pot and listening to this album
Do Feels next.
Has to be Sung Tongs for the next AC album, no doubt
Strawberry Jam is my favourite album of all time
I think he would like them live, sound more like yes, king crimson live.
I'm so bummed that I missed them this tour :(
he got that arcteryx on tho
dripped out
#1 Is by far one of the best tracks
You should actually make him listen to sufjan stevens. Make him listen to like age of adz, Illinois, or Carrie & Lowel
Age of Adz could be a lot of fun!
My Mom really likes animal collective
You got a cool mom
Fall Be Kind!!
Never too old to like AC. I'm 46 and their one of my favorite bands .
Make him listen yo king gizzard
#1 is beyond underrated
my dad was a fan of Leaf House back in the day
also #1 is based as shit
Spirit We’ve Vanished
As much as I'd like Spirit, I feel like Merriweather is probably gonna be a better reaction
he might like time skiffs cause its kinda dad rock
sung tongs or merriweather post pavillion would be good too
He'd probably like Time Skiffs a good amount
@@KyleReidMu I love it more each time I listen and the soundtrack they did recently The Inspection was actually pretty awesome did you hear that?
(necropost) I saw the band live w my dad & brother (my dad doesn't really like anco but he enjoyed the performance) - out of the songs we listened to on the way there, he said he actually really liked the ones off Time Skiffs
@@WiloPolis03 its their dad rock album frfr isn't it
@@apeheadboink Lol yeah fr
Have him listen to Painting With or Feels!
Also Reverend Green is AL GREEN
Okay I'm necroposting but I really can't stop thinking about this - is that story about you breaking rocks for no reason real or was your dad just shitposting lmao
It’s 100% real. The summer before that he also made me dig holes for no reason lol
@@KyleReidMu Bruh what the actual
Are you into of Montreal at all? They are one of my favs along with AnCo.
I've heard a few of their songs and one album in full. I should try again because I remember not being super into them when I tried a couple years ago
Respect. Right on.
