In this video you will watch my dad react to In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. An incredible album about a very tragic event. This album has been memed on to oblivion but it's still a favorite of many people due to it's obscure lyrics and unique instrumentation. There are plenty of fantastic songs on this album such as The King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1, 2 and 3. Two Headed Boy and Ghost.
This is probably my favorite video from this series so far. Watch as my Dad Reacts to Neutral Milk Hotel. My Dad Reviews In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

Would love to see a Tom Waits reaction actually! I’d suggest Rain Dogs but it would be fun to watch your reactions to any one of his albums.
The Glow Pt.2 would be awesome
Would LOVE a on MBV -Loveless, think it could be interesting
@@nattdal88 I've been throwing loveless in the vote since the beginning. I think it would be fun
Sinner Get Ready or Caligula by Lingua Ignota! Heavy themes in there and lots of noise would make any dad shed a tear.
The baby sensory carrots really add to the experience
BAHAHAHA they really do
I played this album to my mom as I have it on vinyl. She thought it was too depressing lol.
Hahaha, makes sense..
I played it in the living room one day and my mom yelled from the other room wanting to know what band was that and said it was great
Imagine if all the dads from all the dad reacts videos made a band together lol
Lmao that would be legendary
Lol
Ted Nugent already exists
I actually really like your dad's interpretation of the Two Headed Boy leading a double life as a German and a protector of a Jew. I know he was fucking around but I genuinely appreciate it
i also thought that was a really interesting interpretation
I really like the interpretation as well but unfortunately it is historically inaccurate. Peter was one of the people hiding with Anne's family, along with his parents and one other Jewish man. Anne and Peter did have a romantic relationship, so my personal theory is that Jeff is implying that he wants Peter to love and care for Anne, possibly in the way that Jeff wishes he could have, which really checks out with the lyrics from Pt. 2.
I think people get too hung up on the "weird" lyrics and completely fail to absorb the how amazing and unique these melodies are.. almost nothing sounds melodically like Jeff's voice or his tunes. A true artist in my opinion.
Also they get hung up on the weird lyrics, but it does make them remember it. It's so strikingly weird that it doesn't leave your mind after you listen to it.
bro its literally so true like, wacky album about anne frank and he says semen its really funny and doesnt show any reactions to the amazing compositions. cringe
EXACTLY. You can enjoy shit way more by simply paying no attention and enjoying it for what it is. I don’t even know any lyrics to most of my fave songs and it doesn’t bother me lmao
I'm a big fan of lyrics but I agree. Lyrics should help the emotionality and enjoyment of the music not necessarily have a perfect rational meaning themselves. Even when they do make literal sense, it's more profound to me when I discover the meaning "accidentally" rather than from sitting there and analyzing the lyrics.
A lot of the lyrics are super incomprehensible to me but others are very moving. Never boring though, which is a lot more than can be said of most music.
you and your dad share such a beautiful relationship, kyle. I wish I had a similar relationship with my dad, god bless you both!
I'm very grateful for the relationship I have with my dad :)
This album was actually the relationship album for my ex and I my during our 5 year relationship. We listened to it every time we drove. Since we broke up, I've never listened to it again. It is my favorite album of all time.
u good fam?
relate w/o relationship
From what I’ve read, the album is about the conflict between Jeff’s close friend who killed himself and Anne Frank and her hope and will to endure despite her dire circumstances
Now that you mention it, I think I remember reading that somewhere too. It would definitely make sense
this is my favorite interpretation
It's actually his first girlfriend who attempted suicide (unless I'm mistaken) and whom was recovering when she met Jeff, Three Peaches is about her and many lyrics in his songs allude to her
@@halflifefan1000 do you have any fonts about him talking about this? :D i didn't know he confirmed this album was about that
It's a combination of the metaphor that Anne frank is the innocence that's lost due to powerful yet meaningless forces, Jeff's suicidal father, his late fiancé that killed herself under the porch after she masturbated to the thought of Jeff one last time, leaving in her suicide note how she wanted to feel his semen over her dead body, and the fact that he had no job at the time.
I showed this album to my dad and he said "it sounds like some hippie shit" he kinda liked it tho lmao
Hahaha idk if I've ever heard someone describe this album as that
communism = hippie
i showed this album to my dad too and he just said it sounds like electric light orchestra idk
Try to make your dad listen to Left Yr Skinny Fists. See how he feels about 20 minute songs lol
Lmao he would kill me
@@KyleReidMu PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE I NEED TO SEE IT. fucking nobody on UA-cam reacts to that album
@@xbenci calm down bruh
You should get your dad to listen to mount eerie/the microphones! I know he'd like the first three songs off of the glow pt 2. (I was thinking he should listen to the entire thing but there's a lot of noisy sections i don't think he would like). Im pretty certain he'd like a crow looked at me and the mount eerie album too. Your dad is cool as hell btw
I really really want to do The Glow Pt.2, I think it would be fun
I would kill to see this
@@KyleReidMu Hell yes
@@KyleReidMu please do a crow looked at me
A crow looked at me is a very hard listen and im not sure if its an album to make a video about, you know. death is real. the glow pt 2 would be great
mad respect to pops for actually giving nmh a genuine listen a lot ppl just brush it off
"Jeff, write an album I won't understand"
-Anne Frank
Make your dad listen to the full 6 hours of Everywhere at the end of time
Oh god HAHA
my dad did his normal thing where during family parties, he gathers the same like 3-4 people around his bluetooth speaker and we all take turns playing any song we want. it was my turn to pick a tune and i chose in the aeroplane over the sea. i told everyone the song title and band name and they were very confused. but they played the song and actually really enjoyed it. theres nothing more satisfying than showing something u have spent hours delving into and loving to someone and they actually enjoy it. great vid :)
I love that you guys do that during family parties. My family and I used to do the same thing and we'd call it "music nights". Unfortunately when everyone moved out we stopped doing it. I'm glad you liked the video :)
I feel like many music reactors on yt try to force themselves to have only positive reactions to the albums they listen to in order to please the audience that just wants their favourite albums to be complemented. Your father however seems very genuine. He doesn't mind clashing the album or making fun of it. In a sense he has a very similar reaction to the one we all had when we first heard it. You can tell that he doesn't really understand the album but that's what is to be expected on a first reaction. Anyways, thank you for this great video, I'm surprised you have so little subscribers considering your video quality. I'm sure that if you continue like this you will grow fast.
Wow thank you for this. I'm really glad that you enjoy the video :)
he didn't even listen to the album properly he just talked through it. but it was funny so whatever
Love neutral milk hotel, it was my dad that introduced me to them
That's awesome! Your dad must have some good taste
Still waiting for this channel to blow up. Editing is on point, thumbnails and titles are engaging, video doesn’t drag on at all, you and you dad have vibrant personalities, everything is perfect honestly
Thank you so much! I appreciate that a lot :)
Haven't hit play yet but King Of Carrot Flowers pt. 2 is gonna be good
Top tier Dad react and I think ur dad would love Black Country New Road since he likes horns and stuff.
Oh that's a good point. I didn't think about that
@@KyleReidMu keep it up king 💜
Love hearing your dad's comments - "it was written for his voice" - so true .. he stretches his voice like an instrument. I bought On Avery when it came out, and was slow to In The Aeroplane because I loved the first too much. I came across this vid looking for great tunes my 13yo would like to play that aren't cliched. Inter-generationally great music and banter .. thanks!
Dude, how do you make your dad listen to all that music?? I put on King Crimson once and he told me to turn that "shit" off😭😭
The trick is to tell him that you're going to film his reaction and put it on UA-cam hahaha Also how dare your dad call King Crimson 'shit'!
i'd love to see your dad's reaction of Radiohead's Kid A
I love your dad's commentary so much!! XD
The Velvet Underground and Nico. Please.
"This guy likes to place his fingers in a lot of different places" - excellent observation LOL! I've listened to this album hundreds of times and I don't know if I've ever noticed that exact detail
Lmao same here
Perhaps your dad should react to King Crimson, assuming he hasn’t heard of them!! ITCOTKC would be a sick reaction vid.
I was listening to that album today and thinking that exact thought haha!
Lmao sick!
someome stop mr neutral milk hotel to stop spreading all that semen everywhere
glad to see you have a dad who is involved in your life. that needs to be a thing maybe we wouldn't be going the wrong direction..
Pinkerton would be great (just noticed i have a pinkerton picture xd)
You should definitely listen to Tom Waits, swordfishtrombones is the best album to start with.
this is actually the funniest video ive ever seen
I'm glad you enjoyed!
If you ever read the diary of Anne Frank you’d know that she talks a lot about her sexual desires (as natural for a girl her age) and that is considering her dad censored the diary when he found it. I think Anne Frank would have appreciated the lyrics of this album it’s really up her alley
Man my dad stopped me when I tried showing him this. The mountain goats and neutral milk hotel are my biggest inspirations.
Aww dude, I'm sorry. I haven't given The Mountain Goats the amount of attention as I should
@@KyleReidMu well the mountain goats have 25 albums haha just saying plenty of content for y’all to react to there haha…my favorite but it’s a LoFi cassette recording album All Hail West Texas…but the other 4 best to round out my top 5 are Heretic Pride, Beat the Champ, Transcendental Youth, and The Sunset Tree. Just if you’re wanting some recommendations haha
I'm a dad that introduced my teen daughter to this band a few years ago. She's a fan. She's since introduced me to Car Seat Headrest.
aww what a lovely relationship y'all have. great music from both ends :)
W FATHER W DAUGHTER
how about the velvet underground
Ooo that could be fun
Showing your dad "new" music that's probably older than you and more likely to have been from his heyday is pretty peak irony.
my dad introduced me to them, as we basically have the same music taste lol.
Neutral Milk Hotel makes me cry everytime lol, especially In The Aeroplane Over The Sea and Holland 1945.
It reminds me of my mortality and the sheer fact that we will all die and just how weird it is that anything is real and exists.
This album is incredible musically. I actually saw them live in 2014 when they briefly toured again, it was awesome to hear live
You should totally check out The Natural Bridge by Silver Jews, such strange and beautiful lyrics!
Just a quick thing of note, you say Jeff kinda disappeared and they didn't do anything after this, but if you haven't heard it they released a follow-up in the mid 2010s called Ferris Wheel On Fire, really really interesting album if you haven't checked it out. Fun video!
Glad you enjoyed the video! I forgot about FWOF. I've never listened to it, I should really do that
@@KyleReidMu Ferris wheel on fire is so good, get to it when you can. I like it more than ITAOTS at this point
lmfao i love you, Jesus Christ!
Haha I think this is certainly dad music. My dad would probably like this band and I am a dad and I like this band haha
People can't handle art anymore wtf
Man, you’ve made me want to learn more about that Anne frank theory, I’ll never miss one of these videos you and your dad are hilarious!
Thanks for watching! That theory is definitely a strange one
Memento mori
The dads gotta throw the son a line here... this album came out early 2000’s so it’s not as if the sons tryin to shock jock him with the latest sounds.
Kyle vibing during Holland, 1945 is such a mood
I couldn’t imagine a more perfect first reaction to this album… I enjoyed this so much y’all much love
Awesome channel, love yr Dad. Would love to see his take on the lyricism of a band like Protomartyr (can’t go wrong with any of their albums but Ultimate Success Today has the strongest writing imo)
I'm glad you're liking it! I'll add it to the list
I really enjoyed your video with your Dad. ...my sons' band Fence did a basement concert and covered the entire ITAOTS album, and they killed. My husband and I now love this album, and I danced with my son to "The Aeroplane Over The Sea" last weekend at his wedding. I was actually watching their show again just now on UA-cam and your video popped up in my suggestions! I don't understand what all these songs mean, but for some reason this album is one of my favorites. I always crank up "Holland 1945" in the car.
I haven't listened to many songs from Neutral Milk Hotel, such a treat to hear the snippets and your banter too. I'll give them a proper listen after I watch this vid 🕴️
You should totally give them a proper listen. Well worth your time!
Pitchfork rated this the 4th best album of the 90s.
Your channel is going to blow up man, loving the content
Thank you! I'm glad you're liking it :)
this whole album has been my world and its just a masterpiece -w-
i like horns too 😩
tom waits 👀
Horns are great!
This reminds me of listening to music with my dad. We like to talk (and make jokes) about all the songs we like. I’m glad you also have that relationship with your dad as well. It’s super wholesome to watch you both!
listen to your father, listen to Tom Waits, lol. in the aeroplane over the sea is a unique and special work though
(imho)
This album is impossible to resist singing along to
one time my dad went to a wedding and jeff mangum was just… there it was so bizarre
Hahaha what on earth
if my dad ever finds out what stains the mountain tops,,, i might have to send him away
Oh yeah, it’s a flugelhorn 🎺 btw. I’m sure others have mentioned this
Anne frank had a potato for a head. Makes total sense
You're so lucky! My dad never listens to anything I recommend.
Lol the truth is that he'd never listen to this with me if we weren't filming it
your dads a cool cat. lost it at "there's semen in the mountain tops, in the garden, it's everywhere!"
as an album reccomendation: sleep by flatsound, it's incredibly depressing but it slaps.
Get your dad to listen to Omnium Gatherum by Kimg Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard!!
One of my favorite albums ever. The lyrics are strange, but god does it flow beautifully. The two headed boy interpretation is interesting, but Peter van Pels was fully jewish haha.
You guys should totally do Tom Waits next. Let your dad decide
I don’t know about community tabs, but definitely Swordfish Trombones, Rain Dogs, or Bone Machine
THE CARROTS LOOOL my mom said these songs remember her of farms life in arizona and animals
idk what she’s talking about
Hahah I also have no idea what she's talking about
But this is true, you don't have to be an artist to enjoy art. Some people just need simple art, whether it be from a painting, music or writing a book. But some people need things that are obscure in nature that they could analyze and enjoy on their own artistic landscape🎉
Yep, there’s nothing like hearing people yak on inane jokes over one of your favourite albums of all time.
bro said melk
You can see him picking up on little things here and there lyrically that make the album so great. Some day it will all come together.
Just love this album. Thanks! My moms not a fan. I tried.
Haha well at least you tried :)
i loved this more than i thought i would 😅
pls dont stop making video’s… shits entertaining as fuck
Thank you! I don't plan on stopping anytime soon :)
You need to show your dad reviews sbout this album explaining the lyrics
I love this channel and your work so much man! Beyond happy I found this channel, keep it up!!
Thanks Jeremy! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos :)
You guys should listen to something neither of you have heard before. Have either of you heard Loveless by MBV yet? Souvlaki? Ageatis Byjrun?
I've heard loveless but not the other two you mentioned. I was thinking about maybe doing a blind reaction with him to the new Black Midi record when that comes out but I'm not sure
@@KyleReidMu You should totally do Agaetis Byrjun by Sigur Ros! Now that would be fun. Plus, there are lots of horns
great video would love to see this format inverted too. like your dad showing you some albums and getting your reaction
My dad wants to do a Tom Waits album next so I'll be sure to through that into the next vote
This was hilarious you guys deserve way more subscribers
Goddamn, your father is fucking hilarious!
All Tom Waits albums are the obscure ones. Also, they’re prob all pretty fricking good, too.
Your content is way too good for 5k subs
Thank you :)
two headed boy is about the often redacted exerpt from The Diary Of Anne Frank where Anne Frank and Peter van Pels doing some... stuff
PLEASE get ur dad to react to alex g 🙏🏽
Funny that every time someone hears this album, they assume the lyrics had to have been drug induced but Im pretty sure Jeff has said that wasnt the case at all
ur music taste is spicy. Do king crimson next!! :)
Good suggestion :)
Honestly I'm kinda dissapointed. I feel like this reaction kinda focused too much on acknowledging the weird and memeable parts of ITAOTS as just being weird instead of trying to understand what was behind Jeff's unique choices. To me, this album is much more clever, and more importantly, more emotional than alot of people give it credit for. It honestly kinda pissed me off to hear Jeff pour all his pain and emotions following his friend's suicide and the emotional rollercoaster he experienced with Anne Frank's diary in Two Headed Boy Pt.2, which is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I listened to in recent times, only for the dad to dismiss it as "Jeff is weird, he likes Anne Frank and he said semen earlier".
Of course, that's just my opinion on this review specifically, not throwing shade on the channel or Kyle's dad as a whole, thanks for introducing me to Sufjan Stevens :)
The ladies head is clearly a tambourine
Great video! Putting in a vote for your Dad to react either BCNR album
Your relationship really shines through all of the other stuff.
great editing and engaging subject but it's that father son relationship that comes through. Good on you both.
This randomly popped up in my recommended, and instantly thought "wow he looks exactly the sort of guy to do this"
His dad was probably in college when this record came out?
Yeah the fallout from the notoriety of this album in the very beginning of the internet was actually really sad. He wasn’t prepared for that level of fame and he had people literally stalking him and trying to get his personal information instead of taking the hint that he didn’t want this kind of life.
Have him listen to on Avery island next
LISTEN TO REAL GONE (ORIGINAL VERSION) NOW! IF YOU CAN'T FIND THE ORIGINAL, LISTEN TO BONE MACHINE!
i fucking LOVE your editing
Thank you!!
Let me guess, dad is a pearl jam fan. I'm 55 and I still like NMH.
Any link to that lecture?
