Another fantastic video Toni! Great job! Fun fact: In the UK, Zootopia is called Zootropolis for legal reasons because there's a zoo in the UK called Zootopia. It's different in the dub. That reminds me, there's often different US and UK dubs of minor characters. I'm pretty sure the entire supporting cast of the Aardman film Pirates: An Adventure with Scientists has a different cast in the US [as well as a different title because scientist= boring apparently]. Speaking of Aardman, for Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were Rabbit, Dreamworks were the main producer/ distributer, so Jeffery Katzenberg went to visit Aardman whilst they were animating and told them to change a load of gags Americans wouldn't get. Of course, it was stop motion so that would require reanimating it, so they just ignored him. They had to give in on the marrow though, so all of the voice actors had to dub it with "melon" but they were directed to do it really spitefully! Also I'm pretty sure that anime probably has the longest history of localisation [editing out guns, calling rice balls "jelly donuts", etc. for the US/ international market]. Even Miyazaki films have some localisation, even though he stipulates that they be as accurate as possible. I did wonder if Phil Hartman's murder was the reason why they included so much of his comedy lines and stuff, but it looks like the dub came out a few days before he was killed. Not to be pedantic, but are you sure you got the UK and US screenshots of the Captain America bit the right way round? It looks like there's more British pop culture references in the American one and vice versa. I don't think many Americans would have heard of the '66 Cup Final. And I'm pretty sure the guns were removed for the 20th anniversary release [a la Star Wars special editions] rather than any kind of localisation. It's interesting what Spielberg was saying about how you shouldn't change your archive to appeal to the tastes of modern audiences. Peter Richardson from the Comic Strip Presents believes the opposite and is always doing new edits of his work. He refuses to screen arguably the most famous episode [Five Go Mad in Dorset] because the jokes making fun of racism just sound too harsh now, so he wants to try and cut them out like he has done with some of his other episodes. I have mixed feelings about his edits. I think his new cut of The Pope Must Die[t] is the best thing he ever made, but I think he butchered More Bad News [which he didn't write or direct in the first place!]. Also IS YOUR LAMP ALIVE!!!

I think a lot of people around the world have heard and know about hockey, but football (soccer) is much more popular and integrated into their culture.

This choice suggests whoever made it didn't trust the intelligence or empathy of non-American viewers. Yeah, we Europeans can't relate to characters who don't like the exact same things as we do.
Not all localization is bad. But a LOT of localization is bad. The spinning globe in Toy Story, for instance, was not popular around the world. When people around the world go to see an American film, they want to see an American film. They want every country's film's to retain the cultural and even political imprint of that country. They want Doctor Who to be British, Naruto to be Japanese and Toy Story to be American. So they want to see the American flag in Toy Story. Taking it out was a bad decision.
That’s a really important point. Part of what makes movies great and why we love them is that we get to experience other culture and learn about it - so there is a lot of value in not altering anything.
It's not a movie but one case that I remember is an Eskimo version of Hamlet that the locals left because the story didn't make sense. He should have already accused his father's murderer with the elders, but that was the point of why he hadn't accused him. with someone else because he knew that no one would believe him but well maybe in his context it is more feasible to do that, but well sometimes translating is tradutorre traditorre post data by the way the Polish poster is excellent

I really enjoyed your video but the clickbait photo is frustrating and makes me enjoy it less. The cover photo made me think they changed the entire look of a main character for the entire movie for another country when it was only a couple scenes. You don’t need to grandiose your videos when they’re good enough anyway and the clickbait just devalues your work.
That’s fair and I get where you are coming from. In an ideal world an attention grabbing thumbnail wouldn’t be as important as it is, but you have to play the UA-cam game to at least some extend. I ran an A/B test with three thumbnails - this one and two others which had no alternations and were 100% real. This thumbnail was a clear winner with over 25% more click through ratio. Assuming the quality of the video is uncompromised, sometimes a thumbnail could be the difference between it completely flopping and it actually finding an audience. For the longest time I was a “purist” and kept the thumbnails perfectly real but eventually a 0.9% CTR starts to tell you that you need to rethink your strategy, otherwise your channel is doomed to never get off the ground. It’s a fine line though and I will keep trying to find the balance as I definitely don’t want to mislead people. I hope you enjoyed the video nevertheless and thanks for the feedback!
