    After about three attempts I finally got the vented dipstick to work - but not really. The dipstick itself works and does not leak, but...there's another problem. What's your guess? Also let me know if you've tried a vented dipstick on your Milwaukee Eight Softail, especially if you have any engine modifications. I have another solution on the way, not the Fueling vented dipstick, something else :)

    hello, I tried the fuel vented dipstick going into a DK catch can and had to give up as it was blowing out too much oil. Same problem as you were having with the standard set up you made. Standard motor okay riding around town, but when cruising blows oil out running four dots down on the dipstick will be trying the task cover next. Keep up the good videos.

    I once left my Yamaha Stratoliner oil tank cap off its separate tank, and tried to start it.. oil pushed up/out of the top of the tank.. its nearly new, and just the engine rotation was causing the pressure changes, so I can see that oil saturation of the end filter happening

    I own a 2019 Road Glide Special with the Stage 2 Torque Cam. I have done this mod myself with airlines 8 mm. I also have a external breather mod. I have no issues with my mods, on the dipstick-filter is only a little bit of condensation/ water, no oil. The filter for the dipstick is located under my right sidecover in front of the ABS- Module. I‘ve done about 400 km with this mod because of the shitty weathet here in Germany. I run the bike quite hard, reving to 4/4.5 k.
    So far no Problems

    If you didn’t put a check valve after the dipstick then you allowed the crank to build pressure and spit oil out as a result, if you did put a check valve and oil still was being spit out than maybe the umbrella valves located under the rocker covers may not be functioning properly and free breathing allowing small pressure to enter and exit from the case. Free breathing is not a huge problem if you ride like a grandpa with a stock bike but anything else, all relief vents to atmosphere need to have a check valve to at least equalize the case pressure or create a vacuum. If the pressure is at least properly equalized, then oil will not spit out. As you know, the only reason Harley does not do this is because of EPA does not allow venting to atmosphere.

    I installed the A1 cycles vented dipstick on my stage 3 street glide m8. Dropped the oil a fraction & mounted filter under the tank, no oil blowing out of filter at all. My m8 fxbb with stage 2 I did similar mod to dipstick as yours but running a motorbike fuel filter on end of the hose & mounted under the tank also, no excessive oil in the filter, just some discolouration on the element, I ride them both pretty hard. I think the filter needs to be as high as possible to allow the oil to seperate in the vapour & run back down the hose

    Hi Ron just found your channel after doing almost the same dipstick mod as you with exactly the same results ! I have a stage 2 on my Sport Glide. The only difference is I used a Kuryakyn dipstick as it is made of a soft aluminium with a convenient round indent at the top to drill and tap. I have seen other posts about fitting filters with one way valves but that is to stop air going in so would not prevent oil exiting ! I will continue to experiment but have now ordered the Fuelling Vented Dipstick. Will be interested to see what your other company come up with and its cost !

    I just have a stage 1. I drilled my dipstick about like you did, except I had actually filled the dipstick with rtv sealant. I couldn't get it to stop leaking before this. I ran the uni filter up under the tank, between the cylinders and it still leaks out the filter. A very small amount, maybe 2 tablespoons on a 100 mile ride. Still frustrating. This has allowed my engine to run significantly cooler though. I'm excited to see what you get your hands on next

    Have you considered lowering the amount of oil in the tank. I know A1 specifically tells you that you must bring oil level down or you will have oil escaping through the uni filter. Also they suggest running the line and filter up under the gas tank so it has limited opportunity to be influenced by outside air when your riding. I bought the A1 but havent installed it yet.

    • @RonsWorkshop
      @RonsWorkshop  3 роки тому +1

      Hey David - thanks for sharing that - it's very interesting. I'm not so sure I am comfortable reducing the amount of oil. I've also realized that under cornering and acceleration the oil is pushed to the back of the tank, up through the foam, into the hose, hose and gets pushed out the filter. I now have a solid plan for a solution that won't lose oil, that is based on the other option I mentioned in the video - that company's product didn't pan out but I now know the "secret". I hope to tackle it tomorrow and post the follow-up video within a week or so. Let me know how it goes with your A1 dipstick.

      The fill level in your oil tank matters. You don’t need 5 quarts of oil. I was having oil escaping from my Fueling vented dipstick until I changed the oil. This time, I used a 4 liter jug of oil. 4 liters is equal to about 4.2 quarts. The bike runs great. The oil pressure seems to be adequate. And there is no more oil emerging from the top of the Fueling dipstick. And I have the M8 107” to 114” Stage IV (including head external breathers).

    I think one of the biggest flaws here was stuffing the lawn mower filter under the cap. That'll collect oil, and with the pressure pushing upwards and trying to escape out the breather hole, it's going to squirt all that oil out with it.

    So I installed my Feuling 3088 vented dipstick, but weirdly I have not ridden the bike. I routed the hose and fastened it along with the filter to the frame. When I tried to take the stock dispstick out, it was stuck. Guess it froze in place because of the bike being stored in a cold garage. So I figured to ride the bike and it would loossened it. 50 miles later, it came right off like normal. Never has this happened to me before. I then installed the dipstick so I could clock it. Install is done but I would have to wait till next week when the weather gets a bit hotter to try it. I cleaned my intake so when I do my 25k service, I will check if there is less oil coming thru the breather. I do not want to do the upper breather if doing the dipstick minimizes the amount of oil. Wil stay tune to find the new solution. My issue with Feuling would be how much money I would need to spend to maintain the dipstick. Does anyone knows if there is a washable filter so we do not have to keep replacing the UP-101? Ride safe!!!!

    Put the fueling dip stick on my 2018 slim. I really think it revs better no oil in the breather .BUT The Trask solution looks better wish I would have waited just a little longer .

      Hey Ken - thanks for letting us know how the Fueling worked for you. Yes, the Trask piece is quite nice. The company I was talking with fell through, so I’ll be using my own plan using the top cover but confidence is high. Video will be out soon.

    I know the “Fueling ext vent” will fix all that problem but it is sure pricey, I’m going to have to bite the bullet and save all my pennies and get one for my FLTRX 🤔

      Hey edward1967able - yeah Fueling is good from what I’ve heard. For mine, I ended up adding a vent to the transmission too cover and it’s working great! Fell video coming tomorrow.

    Thanks for the info, you could try putting 2 loops(360°) in the hose that might stop the oil from making it to the filter, ride safe

      Hey Dj M8 - yeah that’s a possibility. I almost tried that in fact. Good news is the solution I just finished two days ago is working great. No dipstick vent - I used the transmission top cover to vent the crankcase. The company I was working with fell through so I tackled it myself. Video coming soon!

      That's probably the best way of venting it,did you install a check valve in line?

    • @RonsWorkshop
      @RonsWorkshop  3 роки тому

      I did but I’m debating whether or not it’s necessary. I’ve heard that a bit of vacuum can be good for helping pull oil down into the crankcase. At least with the check valve it allows excess pressure to blow off and should greatly reduce or eliminate blow-by. It’s running great and pulling hard with the check valve.

    Fueling vented dipstick costs money but a real engineered product does.Sumping is now traced to 1 in 1000 bikes from what I hear.
    Install a fueling camchest and oils pump and your done I have no relationship with Fueling but ran a fueling oiling system in a big inch builds years ago with great success. Our motorcycles cost top dollar and the parts we install should reflect that.

      Hey Vincent - thanks for the input! I agree the Fueling solution is a nice one and very well engineered. I love the idea of upgrading the whole oiling system. For the crankcase venting, I plan to go a different route and that video will be out very soon.

    G'day Ron hope your doing ok,just picked up a 2022 fatboy do you reckon a need a vented dipstick the engine is a 114 stock standard, cheers mate

    • @RonsWorkshop
      @RonsWorkshop  2 роки тому

      Hey Mark - I'm guessing you'd benefit from venting the crankcase. One simple check you could do is to get a plastic bag, fire up the bike, and remove the dipstick. Then tape or hold the plastic bag over the dipstick hole. If that bag inflates like a balloon you'll know you have positive crankcase pressure and adding either a vented dipstick or a crankcase vent should alleviate that. Let me know if you try that and what you decide to do.

      Hey Brian - yep - looking at that option. May do my own version of that but theirs is very strong. Not crazy about the reed valve because I think it would be good to allow the pressure to flow both directions.

    • @MarcoRyser
      @MarcoRyser 3 роки тому

      I wish they would ship overseas! I’d run a vented cover over a vented dipstick anytime!
      Regarding the reed valve: It seems like you need some pressure (vacuum?) pulling oil through bearings and the reed valve ought to keep that pressure up. Need to do some more research on it, though.

      Hey Marco - I’m sure there’s a way to work around that overseas restriction. Let me know if you find anything in your research about the vacuum. I’m about to implement my own case vent with no check valve. Keep an eye out for my next video :)

    Skip the vented Dipstick…they are annoying and do not work. Instead take off your Gearbox Lid, drill a 8mm. hole in the right corner next to the rear cylinder, cut a thread with a 1/8 NPT Tap, get a 90* degree vent brass elbow from ACE and mount it in the hole with a little teflon tape. Mount a foot long rubber hose and a Crank filter, route it in under the seat or where you can and problems solved for 10-12$ 👍🏻
    I did it myself and my 2017 FLHTK has run 35000 miles without ANY issues ✊🏻☠️
