    I actually just completed the same mod on my 2014 110" Slim. I ordered the same aluminum brake reservoir (in Black) with the bracket. I drilled several small vent holes on the top and used it as the catch can. I mounted it using one of the cam cover bolts. Looks and works great! Thanks for posting the great video! Cheers from Washington state, USA!

    I can absolutely confirm that the carbon build up is happening. I went to a stage three and the carbon build up on the pistons was terrible. I also got the new metal throttle manifold and I inspected the old black plastic throttle manifold and it had a thick grime coating of oil. So this mod is a must along with ensuring you don’t over fill your oil (two dots below full). Thanks for this video!

      Thanks for the comment Russ, I expected the carbon build up in the m8s but you have just confirmed it. How many kms did your bike have when you noticed the excessive carbon build up?

      @@jstockwell73 It is, people are making a big deal out of nothing, the oil "issue" is not an issue at all, there are M8s with 30k miles on them, they run fine, just use some engine cleaner, save yourself some money and don't make your motorcycle look like you built it yourself in your garage by having tubes hang off it like a Kawasaki. If it was as big of an issue as these people are making it out to be, you would have to dump a quart of oil in it between oil changes, the fact is, the oil doesn't get low between oil changes, they are emptying that tiny can out every few thousand miles and probably do not need to for 10000 miles. That amount of oil being burned at that slow of a pace is nothing.

    I am doing the same to my low rider but what is odd from Harley Davidson not fixing it because of EPA crap , why Harley didn’t do a breather solution with a catch filter to replace every so many miles ? That is not venting stuff to the roads , and on top is another trip to the dealer to charge u more labor and parts , wrong move on Harley

    The problem I had after doing this was oil coming out every where it seemed. Put the vented dipstick back in this weekend see if that helps

    • @TheGingybeardMan
      @TheGingybeardMan  3 роки тому

      When you say oil coming out everywhere, where was it coming from? This mod does not perform the same roll as the vented dipstick. The vented dipstick relieves crank case pressure while this mod onky diverts lil pressure away from the intake. This mod does not relieve crank case pressure.
      Oil coming out of your intake is usually a symptom that your oil level is too high. I assume you didn't notice this whilst having the vented dipstick in place as it relieves crank case pressure as stated

    How does the Extreme ventilator compare to the regular ventilator performance wise?

    • @TheGingybeardMan
      @TheGingybeardMan  Рік тому

      It will always be hard to notice the difference between the two ventilator air cleaners with a stage 1 upgrade being aftermarket exhaust, air cleaner and tune however I think the extreme ventilator is necessary when going with the stage 2 upgrades I did, being the torque cam and tune to suit.

  • @rajj72on23
    @rajj72on23 2 роки тому +1

    Guys, this is a great idea. But keep in mind that the original problem was oil sumping. So the ability for this line to breathe is important. The catch can should have a line for fluid and a pod filter to vent gasses out at the top. If you connect the hose to a closed catch can the pressure has nowhere to go, so the pressure from gases will not move, bringing the engine back its original problem to begin with. External breather kits like the one sold by horsepower ink flows to atmosphere. It is more like a hydraulic remedy. Of course, without a breather cap hydraulic pressure cannot move. Just something to keep in mind. ✌

    • @TheGingybeardMan
      @TheGingybeardMan  2 роки тому +2

      After using a catch can for only 1500 kms I certainly would not recommend one. As you said it can pressurise. I'd definitely recommend a pod filter over a catch can. The catch can also began to rust significantly on the inside after only 1500 kms

    What you failed to mention is to use that filter oil as sparingly as possible 😆 I used the stuff on a heavy breather just like you did and the amount of excess oil after significantly blotting it for ages was still significant enough to drip on the cases. With the K&N filter for the ventilator all I did was run one ring all the way around the filter and leave it for 24 hours. it still required several days of blotting with paper towels. Can imagine your clean up was well excessive 😂

    Great video man! thinking of doing the same on my SB21. Q : do i need to tune up after? I've been reading other forums no tuning is need on M8 after doing Air elements or slip on mods but was wondering if it applies the same to the catch can setup. TIA!!

    • @TheGingybeardMan
      @TheGingybeardMan  3 роки тому +1

      When ever you change the exhaust and intake with an air cleaner you should tune your bike to suit as it will change the air/fuel ratio and your bike could run lean. If you just do the external breather mod no tune is needed as it does not changing the air flow, its just diverting the oil from the heads away from the intake.

    Hi - Did you buy the catch can here in Australia or did you have to purchase direct from DK Customs in the States?

      There was non available in Aus so I purchased it from the DK customs U.S website.

    Is a tune necessary with *just* this filter addition?

    • @TheGingybeardMan
      @TheGingybeardMan  2 роки тому

      Not at all. All this does is diverts pressure from the heads (being a oily mist) to the pod filter instead of the intake. This mod does not greatly affect performance.

    Thanhs for all of the great information and instructions. I have a 2020 Softail Standard, basically the same machine as your’s. What tuner did you use? I’m considering either the V&H or the Power Commander.

      @TheGingybeardMan  2 роки тому

      Ordered directly from DK customs, overseas man. Would not recommend it though. The thread on the cap started rusting badly on the inside after only 1000kms. The thread would have completely perished from a little more use. Its not a cheap catch can either. Cost me close to $100. I went back to a pod filter.

    I have a similar backing plate from Screamin' Eagle. Wondered how I would drill it and keep it sealed. What grommets did you end up with to seal to the 3/8 fuel line? Has it held up with no dirt being introduced to your motor?
    Now that the top plate of the transmission is being used by company's such as Trask, do you think it might be appropriate or feasible to vent the oil from the engine to a t-fitting that would then drain back to the oil pan?

    • @TheGingybeardMan
      @TheGingybeardMan  3 роки тому +1

      You could certainly could vent the blow by back into the oil pan however if you were to connect a t-fitting to the casing that would require drilling and tapping the casing which im personally not prepared to do. I believe I used a grommet with a 3/8 inner diameter which makes a tight seal for the hose running through it so no dust can get past it.

    Hi there, even I didn't seen all yours video I have one question..why you're still changing the filters? Round extreme to Ventilator with alu cover, cause better washing if I rember well. now you're using the same shape and replace the cover for open one.honestly, I'm facing this choose as well and I would like to ask yours reason..

    • @TheGingybeardMan
      @TheGingybeardMan  3 роки тому

      This air filter allows more air flow and better performance over the stock ventilator air cleaner. As I said In one of my videos swapped from the extreme flow air cleaner as my leg rested on it with the forward controls I'm running.

    You don't need a catch can which needs regular emptying. Just run a tube down through the swing arm to the ground. If you park your bike in the garage like I do, place a folded paper towel underneath it to catch the one or two drops that fall for the first few hours after a ride. Then throw the paper towel away. The black rubber tube on my Sportster is not noticeable unless I point it out to someone.
