I’ve got the breather filter installed on my 03 Heritage Softail and it runs amazing with the fresh air,no more garbage being blown back into the throttle body, simple to do
Thanks for this video. I now have the external breather installed in my bike. I chose the filter. I drilled the holes and installed the brass hose connectors into my SE Chisel air cleaner. I routed the hose up over the throttle body, under the tank, and over to the plastic shelf behind the right side cover. The filter sits in a small rubber made bowl. After a few hundred miles, I inspected it and logged some more miles after adding some sea foam to the tank and spraying some B-12 throttle body and carb cleaner into the throttle body. It's very gratifying to find the air filter dry as bone without any oil contamination. I checked the Breather Filter again and it was wet with a bit of oil in the bowl. A quick clean up and she is good to go again. I may end up getting the catch can but it all depends on how well the filter set up works. So far I'm a happy Harley Rider. Thanks again
I ride a 2018 Road King standard with the 107 M8. She has a stage 2 with a Fueling 465 cam, Bassani Road Rage exhaust and an Arlen Ness Big Sucker air intake. She’s a spitter! I suspected she was, so when I installed a DK external breather system half way through the summer, I installed it with 2 cans, hanging a can off of each cylinder out in the open just behind and below the air filter. They are out in the open easy to get at. I have to empty them every 600-800 miles. But I don’t mind because servicing the cans is a simple process. The crap that comes out of these is just amazing and I’m glad I’m not running it through the bike anymore. Why is she a spitter?......From an earlier video, I knew not to overfill the oil and I always run at or below the half way mark on the dipstick. I suspect the oil pump. She has an OEM pump that’s 1st or 2nd generation for the M8s. Harley is now on generation 4. To me, it’s just not worth it to put in a new pump because she’s never had a wet sumping issue where I’ve had a loss of power. In summary, I really like and recommend this product. Whether you buy the can or the filter depends on your installation. Mine’s right out in the open and the can looks good. If I did more of a hidden installation I probably consider the filter.
Yes, I would suspect the oil pump is the source of all that oil carry-over also...it sounds like it is not doing a good job of scavenging. Really great to hear that the Catch-Cans are keeping it under control for you. We appreciate your business. 👍
@@glencross4461 Yes, a vented dip stick will reduce the amount of oil in his EBS catch cans. Some of it will now be in the vented dip stick catch can, or along the bike if he uses a filter. But it does not solve the problem of reducing the spitting, it just re-routes it.
@Glen Cross Happy New Year! Yeah, a vented dip stick re-routes Some of the hot, oily, oxygen depleted air, but not all of it. There is still performance robbing crap going into the intake, just not as much.
i have the Catch-Can on my 01Road King. On the bike for around 700 miles so far so good not much in the can yet just a lil oily but the carb is staying clean and its not going in my engine. just FYI when new the fins on my Catch-Can were very sharp and easily cut my hand when I tried to open it the first time. And it just looks awesome...
Thanks for the video. I just ordered a breather system from you guys and I am looking forward to installing it. My bike is a 2019 Street Glide Special. I ordered some extra black hose clamps to aide in keeping my blacked out theme. Great videos and I am a new subscriber. Keep the awesome videos coming. P.S. I went with a catch-can.
Glad you are digging the videos. Thank you for your business, we appreciate it. I believe you will be well pleased with the Catch-Can EBS. Thanks for the Sub.
My old man had one of these fords, I believe it was a 96. He let me and my brother drive it to school and I remember when we shut it off it would try restarting back up and act as if it was starving for fuel. Haven’t done no digging into it as it’s been sitting for years now. I’ll eventually be back wrenching it.
Back in the 70s used to run vent over to the drive chain, right where it came out of tranny. Dripped on the chain keep it lubed, relieving C.P. in the process.
I'm in favor of venting my trans top plate (DIY) , adding a check or pvc valve and a catch can to relieve the pressure/oil mist heading into the intake.
Yes, the dipstick or trans cover vent is a popular internet phenomena right now. We've seen no testing to validate the vacuum theory. We are going to be doing some testing soon. I don't believe you will damage your bike by doing it, but if you vent the head breathers in addition, you will be keeping the bike in better condition. Thanks for your comment. 👍

Helpful video, ive got a small 105cc big bored cub *yamaha townmate* and because the crankcase is still small 50cc at prolonged high revs it just pukes out oil everywhere all over the center stand so i ordered a oil cap with a breather hole to add a second pressure releif point so if that dont fix it the oil catch can it is.. 🙏
Running your filter set up hanging under my AC, while I like the concept it does throw alot if gunk down the side of my '09 UC. Thinking of ordering a catch can or just getting a 'T' & more hose & placing it under the frame.
Some of the older Twin Cam's do spit more than other bikes. You can check your oil level to make sure that you do not have too much oil in the bike, that can cause excessive spitting as well. The catch can does a much better job containing the oil if you have a bike that spits a lot, or you can do like you said and route it under frame. Both, kind of... On my 98 Softail I run the breather bolt hoses to each end of a tee and from the middle leg I run that hose to another tee orientated so the side leg getting the hose from the breather nuts is horizontal. The inline ones on each end are now vertical, I run the bottom hose down to the bottom of the bike with a plug in it. The other end pointing up goes to a little filter. The bottom leg acts as a "catch can" and allows the air to go up and out the filter. My 91 FL is bottom breather EVO, that one I put a small actual catch can with a filter off that. She is getting older and the check valve in the pump will let about a tablespoon get by after a couple weeks. The can catches it all nice and neat, do not have that problem with the 98. The 74 ironhead is a whole different story...
hey fellas i just ordered a breather system for my 2014 low rider. i decided on the filter instead of the catch can. my question is if the filter starts to fill up with oil, will the oil come out eventually through the filter? or just build up in the filter? i prefer it just come out instead of building up in there. thank you for the great products. i had ordered a catch can for more road glide and loved it by the way.
How the oil builds up depends on a few things- 1. How much does your bike spit (every bike is different) 2. How long do you ride 3. How far away is the filter from the intake The further it is away from the intake the faster it will build up. The closer it is, and the longer rides you take will have enough hot air reaching the filter element that it will vaporize and not build up as quickly. Glad you are enjoying the parts, and we appreciate your business. 👍
I had a 4 cylinder Suzuki with just a hose. My wife always complained that after a ride I smelled like gas or oil. I made a catch can, and that issue went away.
First I just want to say you guys are the best when it comes to custom builds, more experience and knowledge than anyone else IMO and you share that with the world. My question is what are your opinions on running the hose near the chain? Would you suggest using a filter if my goal is to lubricate the chain?
I would be hesitant to use the blow-by to "oil" the chain. Depending on what bike you have it may spit enough oil or not. Then it is a matter of what it is spitting, some of it can be a really gummy mess. Take a look at the two linked photos below to see what typically comes out. Also, most chains now days are sealed, and what little lubrication they need is specialized for the rubber seals. www.dkcustomproducts.com/media/wysiwyg/Catch-Can_Glop_1.jpg www.dkcustomproducts.com/media/wysiwyg/black_oil_from_catch_can.jpg
@@DKCustomProducts makes sense but how about if I’m running the filter over the chain? As long as it’s cleaned during services I don’t see how the little bit of dirt on the filter would be much different than the normal dirt and debris the chain picks up from operation
@@exzackt No, getting dirt on the filter is not an issue. It will breathe as much as it needs to, although it should be cleaned periodically (depending on conditions, every 5000 miles or so. Here is a video on how easy it is to clean. ua-cam.com/video/be3R3KSmc4c/v-deo.html
@@DKCustomProducts ok thanks. Are you saying if I run the external filter over the chain, the filter will work to clean the blow-by of any of the nastiness that might be coming out of the blow-by? Would be a trick setup to put that wasted oil to good use
@@exzackt Yes, the filter would clean up a bit of the nastiness, but it might clean it up so much that not much oil would end up on the chain at all. If your bike is a pretty significant spitter, and it is mostly oil (not much water), then you might want to run just the hose if you want to use that oil on your chain.
Thanks for the video. I just ordered a breather set from you guys and am looking forward to installing it. My bike is a 2013 Fatboy with about 13k km (so, only about 8k miles). I’m wondering if any carbon that may have built up might eventually burn off, or do you think I need to consider mechanical or chemical solutions? I don’t have any noticeable tuning issues at the moment.
Glad you're liking the videos, and we appreciate your business. It will burn off. Periodic higher rpm runs (once fully warmed up) will help it burn off more quickly. I do not use chemical solutions. They can be effective, and 99.5% of the time there is no problem with them...but that little chance that a big piece will break off and damage a valve or valve stem...that is not worth it to me.
There are dozens of companies that make External Breather Systems for cars and trucks. We do not. But it is a good idea. Do a google search for your particular auto/year and you should see many options. Sometimes they are called crankcase breathers for auto's, so you might want to search with those key words also.
Thanks for your time guys, I appreciate your help and your products. On my 06 Flhpi with a tc88 , how do you add an external breather with a big sucker air cleaner? The backing plate has two slots for the factory breather hoses that sit under the air filter, when relocating the breather hoses from the factory breather bolts to the y connector it leaves the two channels empty to let un filtered air in to the throttle body. Basically it looks like I need to use some type of filler to close them off or is there a different backing plate that doesn't have the gaps ? I appreciate any help you can give? I have a 06 RK flhpi TC88 w/ Delphi injection I have the basic A. N. Big sucker kit . Am using factory breather bolts with the nipple on them and 1/4 hose routed behind the plate and over the frame. Haven't finished the install yet and haven't heard back from A. N. About it. Probably because they don't think you need an external breather with they're A.C. setup?
Most folks use high heat RTV or silicone to plug those holes. We have a step by step with photos of it in the "technical info" tab at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/diy-head-breather-system-touring-softail-dyna-sportster-dk-diy-bh-brt.htm Some folks use set screws, as seen in this video- ua-cam.com/video/uAmPC_kglJk/v-deo.html The other option is to get a different backplate, that will allow you to use the filter element and cover that you already have. While it will reduce the hot, oily, oxygen depleted air going into the cylinders, it does not eliminate it. So, why spend more money to do half the job?
Two questions: What happens if the catch can fills and doesn't get emptied? Is their "noticeable/measurable" power change after installing either the catch can or filter?
Great questions, thanks for asking. 1. If the can fills up (rare) then oil will start seeping out the vent holes on the top. It will continue functioning as it should. 2. Most folks do notice an increase in power. (but not everyone...I believe it depends on how you ride and how well you know your bike) It is measurable, you can see the dyno chart linked below. Here are a couple of comments from Customers. "Ordered the breather system for my wife's Twin Cam Freewheeler and my Heritage Classic 114 Milwaukee 8. Here is my deal on my 21 street bob 114. I bought an aftermarket breather off of eBay. It is one that has the glass see through cover. There is no external breather. Instead the kit just caps it off completely. Is that bad? I did notice after only 10 miles of riding. The glass was covered in moisture. Water. Is it good to have the system blocked off like that?
The air cleaner may look like it is capped off at the breathers. It is Not. It is feeding that hot, oily, oxygen depleted air into the air cleaner, and part of that is what you are seeing on the see through cover. This is a very useful video on the subject to watch- ua-cam.com/video/EfDeFZblMck/v-deo.html Just so you know, if it were blocked off you would have oil leaking out of various gaskets on the engine. For the longevity of your engine it will definitely last longer if you are externally venting to allow all that hot, oily, oxygen depleted air out of the bike, rather than trapping it in and causing more carbon build up. We have a variety of External Breather Systems that you can see at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/all-twin-cam-engines-c76-323.htm If you are not sure which one will fit your air cleaner, please feel free to email or call: Support@DKCustomProducts.com 662-252-8828 Thanks for commenting! 😎 MB
We do have some Customers that have done that. Water is a non-issue, the chains are exposed to rain and puddles. It is a function of how much oil a particular bike expels thru the breather bolts and a function of the environment.
I got 09 sportster 1200 custom i drilled 2 holes thru the air filter plate put 2 hoses to the vents thru the holes i drilled put a 3/8 TEE barley see my catch filter so far not one drip of oil mines right under the air filter
Great question. Venting the dipstick only stops some of the hot oily oxygen depleted air from going into your combustion chambers...Not all of it. The External Breather System stops ALL that crap from going in. A vented dipstick is trying to relieve the same crankcase pressure as the EBS, so no need to do both. There is one exception...if you have a weak oil pump that is not scavenging well, or have a very high compression ratio resulting in excessive CCP, then doing both can reduce the possibility of sumping.
In the automotive world (I'm a mechanic, but also a biker) we call it the Positive Crankcase Ventilation system (PCV for short) and generally on cars and trucks, any oil vapor coming thru the PCV is extremely minimal. It maybe amounts to a teaspoon every 10,000 miles. That said, I've personally installed a catch can on my Dodge Challenger. I digress. The PCV system that dumps back into the intake is required by law, as per the shitty EPA, to be a part of all vehicles produced now. Something worth noting is that crankcase ventilation is a vital part of ALL 4 stroke engines, but in the past, it used to vent to atmosphere instead of back into your intake. I've personally never known the issue too be as significant as it is on Harleys. To me, there's clearly a design flaw somewhere. There should not be that much oil coming out of the breather as it does on Harleys, M8's in particular and Twin Cams to a lesser extent.
I'm also a mechanic (jet fighters, Bronco turboprops, cars, trucks, bikes and anything else that holds still long enough to workon) since the 1970s and have seen MANY automotive intake manifold PCV passages CLOGGED by baked on oil. HD crankcase pressures due to the common crankpin tend to be high but those problems were solved before WWII with road draft tubes on nearly every piston engine until the PCV valve era in the 1960s. A catch can and NO PCV connections to the intake is the wise move for cars for owners who don't just run a road draft tube or don't want to sort out vaccuum hoses which can be more hassle than just interposing a catch can.
That's great! I'm betting your engine likes that. Appreciate your business. 👍 Have you seen the little vid we made on cleaning the filter? ua-cam.com/video/be3R3KSmc4c/v-deo.html

mount your filters above your source and this will minimize the oil output. the vapor will escape as wanted and the majority of oil will run back down hose. the engine intake breather i just vent to the ground below frame with open hose. but i have very little blow-by. some of these aftermarket parts companys are making big $$$ on manufacturing venting parts, aka dipsticks and tranny plates. it's way easier than that. do your research. lots of info out there.
Your Crankcase ventilation system only produces positive pressure. Additionally there are breather valves in the heads just beyond the breather bolts. Think of those valves as a check valve that would make it virtually impossible for any liquid, including rain water, to compromise the crank case or engine oil.
Are you joking? If not, and you watched the video, I can only write out here what we said in the video. They both function exactly the same. So on functionality, neither one is better than the other. If you want to see what was going into your engine, then the Catch-Can is allows you to do that. Other than that, it is purely a matter of which one YOU like the looks of better.

When you spray the filter element with S100 or Dawn soap or Simple Green, or similar oil cutting cleanser, then let it sit for a few minutes, you can then spray it off and it will be clean, like new, INSIDE and Out. No build up.
Can this type of modification be done on a 2021 Honda CB500F? I just got the bike recently, pretty much brand new. It looks like there is a breather hose with a plug + clamp on the left side of the bike (which I’m assuming works like a catch can), but I don’t know if the bike is designed to recycle the oily hot blow-by gas back into the intake, or dispose of it into the tube.
While we don't know anything specific to your Honda. All engines sold in the USA, including Honda's, must push that hot, oily, oxygen depleted air back into the intake. Hopefully you can identify the route taken to do that and push it into a filter or catch-can.
I used some braided hose and try to route it behind the exhaust to the catch can. Bad idea the hose touch the exhaust and the braids burned and left a burn mark on the exhaust. Lesson learned they are not head tolerant enough to touch the exhaust directly.

Hi DK, I have a 2019 Street Glide with the SE 128ci stage 4 kit installed. They installed the new HD oil pump and since then, the bike burns oil (can smell it from time to time) and the filter/intake has oil inside. Even the spark plugs are dirty. She runs hot 🔥 320 to 340°F. Had to refill oil twice now in less than 2000 miles. I have the Trask Checkmate installed. I will install the Feuling oil pump and cam plate as soon as Michigan warms up a little, if the runout is good. Do you think, that a EBS will help with my issue? Or do you have an idea 💡 what could cause such an issue? Thank you in advance!!!
There are two things that I would look at. 1. They may have made a mistake in the installation of the Stage IV kit...we seen that happen. Have them do a Leak-Down test as a first step to tracking down the problem. 2. Whether it passes or fails the leak down test (should be at least 95% or higher), it is running far too hot for its' own good. Check out this video series (if you don't watch them all, for sure watch #3 in the series) ua-cam.com/play/PLb3bvZgbH92_3s-2vv63QggFJ3nteFd_C.html Yes, an External Breather System will help the bike run stronger and last longer, but it is not the entire solution to the heat or the burning oil.

@DKCustomProducts got a call today from the dealer and they weren’t able to produce any leak down on the motor. They stated, that they were able to get pressure by rotating the motor in the push rods. They asked which oil I am running and blamed the Amsoil 20-50 syn. I changed now over to redline 20-50 syn. Let’s see how that will work. They want me to monitor the oil every 1k miles, if it’s less than a quart it’s good by HD. Look at this photo for one idea- www.dkcustomproducts.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/b/r/breather1_1.jpg
Vented dipsticks and transmission cover vents do NOT take the place of external breather systems. There is still hot, oily, oxygen depleted air being fed into the intake. The folks that sell vented dipsticks and trans cover vents, have it right in their product description that they do not prevent all that crap from going into your intake. Here is a copy and paste from the Trask website- "This will reduce the oil exiting from the head breathers..." Even if there is no trace of oil in the intake, there is still hot, oxygen depleted air going into the combustion chambers, making the engine run hotter, and not as strong because of the lower oxygen content. IF you have an older M8, with the older oil pump and you are concerned about sumping...OR, IF you have a built engine with higher compression, then it may be beneficial to do an EBS And a vented dipstick or trans cover vent.
Mine either. It used to. I have a custom setup of jegs tubing. It looks sick with red and blue fittings and chrome angled piping. I get nothing anymore though...?
It does not cause any problem. I suppose if it was caked with dried mud it could plug up enough to be a problem. I've run mine for well over 10K miles without cleaning and it has never plugged up enough to be an issue. Yes, all engine produce crankcase pressure, which results in hot, oily, oxygen depleted air going into the combustion chambers. This results in less power, and carbon buildup in the throttle body sensors and pistons. The newer oil pump was to fix the sumping issue, but it does not eliminate blow-by which is the power robber. Every bike has different levels of oil contained in the blow-by, and an oil pump can have some effect of making more or less oil being suspended in the blow-by. Not sure which photo you are referring to. However, both on the Twin Cam and M8, a popular placement is below the air cleaner above the timing cover, like in the link below. It is attached to the hose, nothing else. At first we thought it might move and bump into the pushrod tubes, but it doesn't. Hose is pretty short and stiff enough to keep it in place. The ONLY leak on the whole bike! Made sense. I cut 1/2 of the curve at a slant. Then what would be better is a bit of screen shaped then a tiny hose clamp since its there for a small bit of breathing/balance. Better would be after adjusting the cable, (get this) and cleaning the adjustment/cable shaft sealing it with Black Gorilla tape (it comes in duct tape type rolls so strong it's exceedingly hard to even get it Off the roll!! Don't just run a hose! The oily deposit will attract dirt.....My situation: I put a catch can with a filter on, connected to my head breather hose, and clamped it to the left (primary) side front riser of my frame....Okay. When I checked/drained the can after a few hundred miles, there was a good amount of what looked like water, not oil, in the can. I collected it in a container, luckily. But I think this is from heated air that cooled and condensed. Anybody's thoughts?
Condensation is found in the catch can when the weather is cool/cold and/or when there have been a lot of short runs...where the engine did not get to full operating temperature and stay there for a while. This is because water is a by-product of combustion AND because of the heating and cooling cycles which result in condensation. When an engine is fully warmed up and runs for 15 minutes or more at full temp, all the water is expelled as steam....otherwise, it collects in the catch-can.
@@DKCustomProducts Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it. My bike is run for a half hour at least because of where I live, and takes a while to warm up. So, yeah, that makes sense. Thanks again.
Any downside to running the hoses up above the air cleaner instead of below? I want to route the hose to the other side and going up will be easier. Not sure if the sitting oil there will increase backpressure too much or if it doesnt make a difference.
Great question. The sitting oil does not increase backpressure/reduce performance at all. I run my hoses up and over on 2 of my bikes, and have been doing that for well over 75K miles on these two. Back 10+ years ago I ran them that way on my Sporty for years. The only situation where I would not do that is if the bike was ONLY used for short runs of less than 30 minutes and Never had any longer rides. Another brand had a recall. The crank vent hose had a low spot. Repeated short trips in cold weather could build up condensation. In freezing weather ice could block the crankcase vent, resulting in blown seal that could dump oil onto the rear tire. Recall routed the hose on a continual downhill, so water couldn’t fill in a low spot. I used to commute on a Road King in the winter, as long as the roads were dry. I’d try to do a longer trip every week or two to let the engine get fully warm, but when I had occasion to take the breather system apart I was shocked at how much water there was…

Vented transmission cover to relieve pressure and lessen the amount that will make it to the intake in the first place…. Seems like we all should be doing both
Why? Vented Trans still send hot, oily, oxygen depleted air to the intake, so an External Breather System is needed. If you have an EBS there is 100% of pressure relieved, there is no hot, oily, oxygen depleted air going into the intake, so where is the need for a vented transmission? btw, the only reason for the dipstick vent or trans vent was because of the bad oil pumps the first few years of the M8. That has been resolved...and if one has an early model M8, it is highly recommended to get the latest oil pump, which alleviates the extra pressure in the crank. The only time that it makes sense to run a vented dipstick or trans vent, in addition to an EBS, is if one has a highly built M8 with a very aggressive cam, and/or really high compression...reason is that more than the normal amount of pressure will push past the rings into the crank, building excessive pressure. That said, I know a few guys with built 131's, running an EBS, and running them cool, and they have had zero issues.
@@DKCustomProducts are you certain? That the EBS relieves crack case pressure ? How? It seems to me that the EBS relieves the symptoms, but not the cause.. but you are right it’s for higher built motors. I’m running a woods 22xe on a lowrider st .. so I’m thinking from that reference point
@@drainmonkeys385 That is exactly what the breather bolts do, relieve crankcase pressure. If there were no crankcase pressure, there would be no need for breather bolts. Here is a video with a diagram of how the crankcase pressure is routed up to the breather bolts. ua-cam.com/video/x61yu0HKW5c/v-deo.html The entire video is useful, but starting at the 1:30 mark is where the manual description of the "crankcase breather system" is shown.
Well, as you alluded to, the vented dipstick in MUCH more expensive...but what really is ironic is that vented dip stick does not eliminate the Hot, OIly, Oxygen depleted air from going into the combustion chambers, which is a power robber and a longevity issue. Yes, it does reduce it some, but since it does not eliminate it...it is really only something to look at if you have a sumping issue. And if I had a sumping issue I would resolve it at it's source, not put a bandaid on it. The other reason is if one has a built engine, that for some reason is building excessive Crankcase pressure, that would be a reason to have both a dip stick vent and an EBS.
There is no reason that installing an external breather system would cause water to go into your crankcase. You are rerouting the hot oily oxygen depleted air out of the throttle body into a filter or catch can. 👍
Technically it could void the HD warranty, but we have never heard of any dealership doing that. Not using one will reduce power, and cause premature wear in the engine, but it is so gradual that most folks don't notice it.
@@InHimwillitrust I like the premium discrete with a filter. Having a filter or a catch-can (they both provide the bike the same benefit) comes down to a preference, as discussed in the video. Yes, we have had the Outlaw Breather Bolts available for over 10 years now (LBC & TCB complimented us by copying the idea). They work well on 99% of Sportsters, about 50% of Twin Cams, and about 80% of M8's. The filter in them is really small, so on a bike that is a spitter (has a lot of oil carry-over) they can overwhelm those small filters and get oil along the side of the bike. Good question. Look at the link below, it is a fairly typical picture of what is being blown out. That is Not something you want to be in your oil circulating around in the engine. Just like it is not good for it to be in the throttle body or combustion chamber. www.dkcustomproducts.com/media/wysiwyg/Catch-Can_Glop_1.jpg
Is there anyone that has info on the idea that the original configuration needs to be under vacume? And useing the breather config makes a free breathing type issue.. dunno? Just askin.
Engines have been running with External Breather Systems for over 100 years. Running an EBS is only going to help your engine run better. There is no measurable change in crankcase pressure on the original configuration when running and EBS.

I have a HD SE air intake and DK Customs External Breather with Catch Can. The earlier version of your catch can. What’s the improvements with your new version?
If you do not have a real spitter (the oil is not overwhelming your smaller catch-can) then you do not need the newer one. The newer one is larger, so it can hold more between needing to empty it. The newer one is a 4 Stage filtration inside the can. The improved filtration does a MUCH BETTER job at keeping all the oil in the can...this is really important for bikes that have a lot of oil carry-over. You can see in the photo below that the filtration is made up of 8 individual components, designed to let the air out and keep the oil in. The Catch-Can you have now has just one piece of foam in it. www.dkcustomproducts.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/c/c/ccdk_apart_6_1.jpg

How the oil builds up depends on a few things-
1. How much does your bike spit (every bike is different)
2. How long do you ride
3. How far away is the filter from the intake
The further it is away from the intake the faster it will build up.

Once in a while ride it like you stole it and the carbon will burn off

We have a step by step with photos of it in the "technical info" tab at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/diy-head-breather-system-touring-softail-dyna-sportster-dk-diy-bh-brt.htm
Some folks use set screws, as seen in this video- ua-cam.com/video/uAmPC_kglJk/v-deo.html
The other option is to get a different backplate, that will allow you to use the filter element and cover that you already have. You can see that at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/naked-hiflow-606-air-cleaner-back-plate-dyna-softail-touring-rushmore-w-no-filter-element.htm
Why not a vented dip stick ??
While it will reduce the hot, oily, oxygen depleted air going into the cylinders, it does not eliminate it. So, why spend more money to do half the job?
Two questions: What happens if the catch can fills and doesn't get emptied? Is their "noticeable/measurable" power change after installing either the catch can or filter?
Great questions, thanks for asking.
1. If the can fills up (rare) then oil will start seeping out the vent holes on the top. It will continue functioning as it should.
2. Most folks do notice an increase in power. (but not everyone...I believe it depends on how you ride and how well you know your bike)
It is measurable, you can see the dyno chart linked below. Here are a couple of comments from Customers.
"Ordered the breather system for my wife's Twin Cam Freewheeler and my Heritage Classic 114 Milwaukee 8. Easy installation instructions and high quality components. The performance on both bikes have improved and they are running cooler in the warm FL WX. Highly recommend you install the breather system(s) on your Harley. You will not regret it! Thank you! "The first thing I noticed was my engine was running cooler! Maybe I’m just imagining things, but I seem to have more power."

This is a very useful video on the subject to watch- ua-cam.com/video/EfDeFZblMck/v-deo.html
Just so you know, if it were blocked off you would have oil leaking out of various gaskets on the engine.
For the longevity of your engine it will definitely last longer if you are externally venting to allow all that hot, oily, oxygen depleted air out of the bike, rather than trapping it in and causing more carbon build up.
We have a variety of External Breather Systems that you can see at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/all-twin-cam-engines-c76-323.htm

Wonder if any chain drive guys, route a hose directly over their chain, sure it probably wouldn't totally keep it lubed, maybe too much water to?
We do have some Customers that have done that. Water is a non-issue, the chains are exposed to rain and puddles.
It is a function of how much oil a particular bike expels thru the breather bolts and a function of the environment.
DK parts are awesome and they work.
Thanks man. Glad to hear you're enjoying the parts. We appreciate your business.
Well done.
Thank you! 🏍
I got 09 sportster 1200 custom i drilled 2 holes thru the air filter plate put 2 hoses to the vents thru the holes i drilled put a 3/8 TEE barley see my catch filter so far not one drip of oil mines right under the air filter
Should I vent my dipstick as well as at the air cleaner? Or do I just need to vent at one location?
Great question. Venting the dipstick only stops some of the hot oily oxygen depleted air from going into your combustion chambers...Not all of it. The External Breather System stops ALL that crap from going in. A vented dipstick is trying to relieve the same crankcase pressure as the EBS, so no need to do both.
There is one exception...if you have a weak oil pump that is not scavenging well, or have a very high compression ratio resulting in excessive CCP, then doing both can reduce the possibility of sumping.
Awesome thank you for confirming my thoughts. Can’t wait for my 4 stage system to come!
@@paulbassett3638 Cool, we appreciate your business, and believe you will be well pleased with this mod.
Thank you for your well thought out comment. 👍🏻
I did the filter option on my 07 Softy when I went to 110ci, clean it every oil change
That's great! I'm betting your engine likes that. Appreciate your business. 👍 Have you seen the little vid we made on cleaning the filter? ua-cam.com/video/be3R3KSmc4c/v-deo.html

EPA special agent Greta Thunberg would like to know your location.
mount your filters above your source and this will minimize the oil output. the vapor will escape as wanted and the majority of oil will run back down hose. the engine intake breather i just vent to the ground below frame with open hose. but i have very little blow-by. some of these aftermarket parts companys are making big $$$ on manufacturing venting parts, aka dipsticks and tranny plates. it's way easier than that. do your research. lots of info out there.
Thanks for your input! 👍
How will the filter do on rainy days?
Your Crankcase ventilation system only produces positive pressure. Additionally there are breather valves in the heads just beyond the breather bolts. Think of those valves as a check valve that would make it virtually impossible for any liquid, including rain water, to compromise the crank case or engine oil.
Which one is better
Are you joking? If not, and you watched the video, I can only write out here what we said in the video. They both function exactly the same. So on functionality, neither one is better than the other.
If you want to see what was going into your engine, then the Catch-Can is allows you to do that.
Other than that, it is purely a matter of which one YOU like the looks of better.

You're absolutely correct. Never let any hose touch the exhaust or the cylinder/head fins.

Check out this video series (if you don't watch them all, for sure watch #3 in the series) ua-cam.com/play/PLb3bvZgbH92_3s-2vv63QggFJ3nteFd_C.html

Let’s see how that will work. They want me to monitor the oil every 1k miles, if it’s less than a quart it’s good by HD.

I used an in out catch can, filter on out side. What do you guys think of trask check m8
Here is a copy and paste from the Trask website- "This will reduce the oil exiting from the head breathers..."
Even if there is no trace of oil in the intake, there is still hot, oxygen depleted air going into the combustion chambers, making the engine run hotter, and not as strong because of the lower oxygen content.
IF you have an older M8, with the older oil pump and you are concerned about sumping...OR, IF you have a built engine with higher compression, then it may be beneficial to do an EBS And a vented dipstick or trans cover vent.

is it needed for a 2021 road glide special? 2021 and above have a difference oil pump.

Yes, if it is installed per the included instructions it will not seep. Thanks for watching and the comment! 👍
If i run the hoses up and over the engine instead of down, will the oil collect in the hoses and hinder the breathing of the engine?
No, it is all positive pressure that is pushing through the hoses. It can help if you are having a lot of condensation due to shorter rides and the engine not fully warming up.

The catch can or filter system would definitely do better at not getting that oil on your bike.

I see from your pictures that on a 107 the catch can is attached next to the timer cover. What is it attached to ?
Not sure which photo you are referring to. However, both on the Twin Cam and M8, a popular placement is below the air cleaner above the timing cover, like in the link below. It is attached to the hose, nothing else. At first we thought it might move and bump into the pushrod tubes, but it doesn't. Hose is pretty short and stiff enough to keep it in place. If there is a different placement that you are asking about, let me know. www.dkcustomproducts.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/z/a/zammy_606_spoke_cc_ebs_3.jpg
I used an old aluminum fuel filter and changed out the filter element with a small piece of sponge inside. Sponge soaks up most of the oily crap.
Very cool. We played around with modifying some fuel filters. Still have a couple sitting on the shelf. Is yours clear...I like the idea of seeing inside it thru the clear housing. How are you venting it?
@@DKCustomProducts No it's not clear. It was a one I had left laying around from a chopper build. I just connected on the end underneath the bike. Left the end open, so it goes through the sponge and out the other end.

If you are having a lot of excess oil carry over you may want to check the oil level in your bike. When you check the oil cold the level should be between the add a quart line and the full line. If it is at the full line when checking it cold you have too much oil in your bike.

Here is a video with a diagram of how the crankcase pressure is routed up to the breather bolts.
ua-cam.com/video/x61yu0HKW5c/v-deo.html
The entire video is useful, but starting at the 1:30 mark is where the manual description of the "crankcase breather system" is shown.
Which is better a breather system or a vented dip stick other than price?
Thanks , just what I needed to know.
What about water going into crankcase ?
There is no reason that installing an external breather system would cause water to go into your crankcase. You are rerouting the hot oily oxygen depleted air out of the throttle body into a filter or catch can. 👍
I'm considering it for my Road Glide but don't want to void the warranty. Will it shorten the engine life if I don't install this breather system?
Technically it could void the HD warranty, but we have never heard of any dealership doing that.
Not using one will reduce power, and cause premature wear in the engine, but it is so gradual that most folks don't notice it.
@@DKCustomProducts i have a 2021 RGS 114. Which system do you recommend? How can I order one?

What about breather bolts? I have some from Lowbrow Customs and TC Bros that I've never had a problem with.
Yes, we have had the Outlaw Breather Bolts available for over 10 years now (LBC & TCB complimented us by copying the idea). They work well on 99% of Sportsters, about 50% of Twin Cams, and about 80% of M8's.
