- Sussex Toll gates have now disappeared from the roads. In this vintage episode, the Bald Explorer explores the remaining toll gates of Sussex. Join the adventures of the Bald Explorer as he discovers Britain
Before the Turnpike Trusts of the 17th century the roads were dreadful, barely more than simple tracks. When the tolls came into being things took a lot longer to improve. Richard Vobes goes off in this short documentary to find some of the Sussex Toll Houses that once graced the roads and were responsible for collecting the money to improve the roads.
How come I have only just stumbled across this channel? Beats the BBC and I dare say a fraction of the cost!. Wrthy of National TV anyday. Well done Bald Explorer.
Thankyou for sharing this charming video. I lived in Sussex in the mid sixties & did notice some of these quaint little buildings as a child.
That was brilliant, we live in Polegate East Sussex. We had a Tollgate at the top of our high street. It was pulled down in the 1900s with the blacksmiths and many other buildings.
An excellent video, so informative and well-produced.
well Richard I watched all your videos on this channel I really enjoyed them
Extremely interesting. Love hearing about bygone days.
Some nice Mallow & Burdock along the way there.
Fantastic video Richard. I always wondered what that brick round structure was near the ashcombe roundabout and now I know!
Have driven past this many times. Thought it was an ice house! Great pictures from 'back in the day' Richard, thank you! Especially impressed to see the picture you found of the original pair of structures framing the toll gate. How many others have been lost due to road widening?! One long winter's day, we can talk about Coal Tax Posts that were on the boundary of Greater London and even a Coal Tax OBELISK or two! (I have many pictures of the aforementioned). And don't even start me on the Pelham Turnpike with the Bow Bells symbols on the A22 and A26 milestones! Bless you for educating us on your historical finds - you are an inspiration!
My Nan used to live in Beeding. I spent some time there as a young child.
Shame you aren’t posting anymore I’ve found these quite interesting
This was brilliant
Brilliant love watching your videos 😁
Fascinating film Richard. I always wondered what the round building was next to the A27. My mother’s sister, and her husband, worked on a farm in Staffordshire, where I would visit and stay every summer. They rarely left their village and that was only to attend the weekly farmers market, or go shopping, once a week. Each year they would travel to London to stay with his relatives. It’s amazing to think that in 50 years how things have changed! 🤭
I really enjoy your videos. Thank you :)
Watching the Birth as to say of you that has been silenced. This could be a good thing in the long run for yourself, as like myself give us chance to find out your path. Good luck you have my back.
It might have been a vintage one, but it was a good one! Who woulda thunk the history of English roads was so interesting?!?!😄 Amazing that 117 Roman roads still exist! Bramber looked like a wonderful little town. I know I got hooked on you (& found you) because of my grandfather's Bramber Castle. Now I need to see if you have done a walking tour of Bramber the town.
You missed out the two in Long Furlong. Both still there.
Hi, so I can see your last video is from 4 years ago! Don't you make new videos any more?
He uploads on a new channel if you search for it 👍
i thought you'd find this interesting: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poundbury
under prince charles direction, they are building a new town next to dorchester in a 1700s style with focus on being close and communal
Do you do the computer graphics Richard?
