- I am out in the countryside again and this time I seek the gibbet of Jack Upperton, a rouge labourer from Sussex who robbed the mail and was hanged for the crime.
Please support me so I can do more walks and vlogs. Check out / richardvobes
I film with a Gopro and Zyiun Smooth 3 Gimbal.

These walks are so relaxing to watch. And I LOVE the history. Everything I want in one video! Thanks!
Kevin Predragovich Thank you so much. You are very kind. I hope to produce many more!
Love it when you do vids on old crimes and criminals.
Thanks very much - I hope to explore a few more local crimes in due course - I am always looking for ideas and places to go!
I can just imagine the ghostly gibbet creaking on a lonely windswept day. Excellent video.
Really enjoy your little short films Richard, look forward to more.
I love how he's so VISCERAL at the end!
I like how he so sets the mood and the time so well too!
Thanks very much.
Every morning before work I sit down with a coffee and watch your next instalment, love it, keep up the good work 👍🏻
Thanks Philip, that's made my day! I am getting ready to whiz out and film something else and that comment has given me the impetus to get cracking!
love it, very educational... and love the fact that you reply to every of the comments, very humble🙏
I do try.
Enjoyed it! This format has so much potential! Keep refining!
Thanks you very much. I shall work on it more and more.
Another fantastic and informative vid. We regularly mountain bike the APE, so beautiful and peaceful. Just shared this and we're going out this weekend to find it too.
Oh it is a good find and quite fun when you remember the story behind it. Good luck. Thanks for sharing too!
Another interesting story. Thanks for the walk! Beautiful country!
Thanks for watching - they are great fun!
What a great video I can’t wait to see more of your history videos you need to upload even more. Great work keep it up :)
Doing my best! Thanks for watching.
We all know you do :)
He was hung in 1771 what was left of him and the gibbet cage was taken down in 1774.
Yes, it is a macabre story.
Another very interesting walk!
Thoroughly enjoyed this Vlog thank you so much for sharing. I hadn’t realised. (Foolishly) that Gibbets were a thing that had been etched in our history and that we could still see where they had been. Absolutely fascinating. Your video came up on my feed so I’m looking forward as a new subscriber to catching up and following along. 😊
There's a gibbet marked on the map at the top of Long Furlong, near Findon village. There is also a Roman well nearby.
Very clear audio with all that wind.
Nice job.👍
Thanks 👍
Thank you kind sir, very informative! 😄
Must have been very windy on the day "Your Jack" was set upon his gibbet. Perhaps his lost soul was walking with you in remembrance with such a strong breeze.
Thank you again Richard for a lovely walk.
So pleased you enjoyed it.
Such a secure place England is!! If this empty place was in Bangladesh, you could not have taken even a walk. There would be drug addicts, village bad people, unemployed goons & also rapists
Good grief!
So pleased you found this. Of course Jack still haunts the area it is said.
Loved your video..... Very interesting and informative thank you
Another interesting video - thanks Richard
Thanks Dave. More to come!
This was interesting Richard, near where I live is the stump of tree where men were hung outside the boundary of Pevensey, its always been known as the old hang mans tree. On the stump is carved the initials of the man who chopped it down in 1970.
Enjoyed having a stroll with you and never knew about this story .Very interesting..
cozicoops Cool. Thanks glad you enjoyed it.
Enjoyed the video, thanks Richard
I really enjoyed this little tale and walk Richard. I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to more historic stories from you. 😊
Thanks very much - not all the walks have history attached to them, but a lot do. Thanks for watching!
Just found this video. Many thanks Richard for this one. Was a resident of Arundel for many years and cycled past many times. Only ever found the marker once though. Must go back one day.
Thanks very much.
Loved this, Richard, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Took us a while to find that Gibbett about 9 years ago but a fascinating area to explore.
Yes - its tucked away off the beaten track.
It's on this Video I produced called 'Sussex Haunts' exploring some of the paranormal claims of the area (a little side career I do), the Gibbett is at the 5'53'' mark.
A fascinating story - sounds like that Jack was a desperate man!
Hardship caused by governments as usual. And it still goes on as we all know. Do not comply is my message.
Nice little historical anecdote, Mr.Vobes. Justice was served, to such ne'erdowells, back in the day. I'd say, for more recent crimes against the citizenry, such penalties would be the very least to be served.
Thanks for the walk today. Will share with the Uppertons in Australia
Please do!
Thank you that looked like a interesting walk with a nice peace of local history it seems a shame in some ways that it wasn’t marked at the start of your ramble so people like myself who is always interested in walks with a bit of history behind them so much appreciated and to be honest I wasn’t sure what I was going to see at the end if anything so thank you for an entertaining 15 minutes :)
Excellent story Richard . Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Good morning Richard thanks for the video. Yes that's the Gibbit I ment and as I say I have looked for it on many occasions and have never found it. A very respected teacher took us there when we were at school so it has a bubble meaning really. Thank you very much for taking the time it much appreciated. Keith
Excellent. It sounds like the one you meant. :)
Thank you Richard very kind. Keep safe. Keith 👍
I got here by chance and enjoyed the video so much that I subscribed, so much better than watching the crap on tv.
Great video
I enjoyed the story, thanks for sharing
thank you
Poor ALBERT hope he was found,😼
Well analyzed!!!
Thank you.
Loved this many thanks russ what about coming to Bristol england we have got some history 👍👍👍👍
Yes, Bristol is full of history and one day I will get there. Thanks.
Good stuff man
Great stuff.
Thank you very much
A great story well told
Thanks very much Andrew.
good video, very interesting!
Thanks so much.
The wind is sooo scary .......
So sad ... the bad things that have happened to poor, desperate people,
Yes indeed.
There's a gibbet not far from me in Cambridgeshire, it's right outside a Mcdonald's! Caxton gibbet
I love when someone find something historic
Thank you
Why are roads that are not tarmacced called unmetalled roads ? Did roads used to be made of metal ?
I had a quick look on Mr Google and I couldn't find a definitive meaning.
I'm subscribed have my notification bell on. I also liked this video
That is well harsh
The internet is the modern gibbet - everyone in the whole world can read about your crimes no matter how pettey, forever. A life sentence in fact.
Nice.
Would make the would-be burglars of today think twice!! Another fantastic video💙
Wouldn't it just!
well thats my plan put back i will go there and have a look for the gibbet
Good luck. It is easy to find, when you know where it is, of course! :)
Next time you go about looking for something...record the GPS coordinates on your phone. Then post it!
Good plan! Thanks for watching!
No don’t if people want to find it they can!
Was the gibbet not hung on a tree?
The area was clear from trees, most likely and the body was meant to be seen from afar, as a warming - so probably hung on a post.
Most history we read only records the deeds of the "great and good". I personally love the histories that illuminate the daily lives of people who would be my peers in that time. Thank you for your videos!
My pleasure - thanks so much for watching.
blow that Richard...(did you mean rogue perchance?), yours forever Captain Swing (never knowingly pink)...
"How do we get back?" That's a fun sign off catch phrase.
Julio Tijuana Thanks Julio. May have to keep it!
With the puzzled look.
If you do decide to keep it , may I suggest you save clips of 'How-do-we-get-back?' moments so that in the future you put a video together with all of those. It could have a map with ever more twisted dotted lines going everywhere and some music. Just an idea.
Heres another idea , you could write a book titled "How do we get back?" about your experiences filming this type of videos. Chapters could include: What do you need? - Where to go? - What's the weather? - Do I need to ask permission? - Bring a friend - Keeping safe - etc.
Julio Tijuana Another brilliant idea. I must write these down. :)
13 minute video to see a Post in the ground... cool story bro
Yep, that's the nub of it.
Very interesting. I definitely will not attack my postman today. The neighbours would not be pleased seeing a dead body hanging from the lamppost across the street.
I certainly hope you don't - you'll only get a pound like Jack Upperton did! :)
If you like, I’ll make a Gibbet and cage. It may or may not have a political carcass in it.
Not a very bright lad was he...Jack Upperton! Should have kept feigning poverty.
Yes, not at all bright!
