I don’t understand the “thumbs down” - if you’re a great photographer, you’d have wished for information like this and so wouldn’t give a thumbs down. If you’re new to photography, then this information is absolutely vital to great Long Exposure images. I think it was a brilliant video with every bit informative. Thank you!
Thanks Bruce! Sadly there are a lot of people who just dislike for other reasons or without even thinking. It can be quite disheartening being on UA-cam, but fortunately the positive comments and reasonable, polite people remain the majority and I try to focus on them.
I can't understand it either, Bruce. Some people really go all the way out just to turn perfectly good work down. I am an experienced Photographer. Actually, I love to be called Photographer. And regardless of my vast experience, I always go around to check whatever other people are doing AND LEARN WITH THEM, shamelessly. Acting like that, I hope I will never be obsolete. My word of advise to new Photographers: Always be ready to learn, always get rid of the senseless critics.
are you new to youtube or something? he like to dislike ratio shows over 95% of people who watched this video liked the content and you're whining about 88 dislikes in comparison to 4.4k likes? i wish i could thumbs down your dumbass comment
There are a group of really good photo/camera websites, and Cameralabs is one of them. The Thumbs Down vote should come with a reason, this gives the video creator an idea of what is at fault.
General Rule for ND Filters: - Little Stopper (6 Stops) to blur people and movement at 1/2 s - Big Stopper (10 Stops) to blur movements from water and/or clouds for 30s to 1min - Super Stopper (15 Stops) to blur cloud movement w/o water for 2-4min
Definitely one the most simple, easy, understandable videos on the subject that I have come across...keep up the great work sir.i am subscribing...good luck and god bless.
Fantastic video! I like the idea of JPEG photos directly from camera. Nowadays too many people are talking about computer skills, PS, LR etc, rather than camera skills. Appreciate your contribution! Hope to see more videos like this. Subscribed.
Probably the most well put together on Long exposure photography I’ve ever seen. Plenty of videos teach people how to shoot long exposure but don’t ever mention Nd filters. this video not only mentioned them but gave a bit of beginner knowledge on them. Very useful 👍
Thank you Gordon! Excellent video, and a clear, focused ( no pun intended), and thorough explanation of the relationship between ISO, aperture, shutter speed, the filters, and the light they control. CHEERS!!
Thank you for a great guide. I think what makes this one stand out is that you are actually out with your camera doing all the trail and error live on location, as opposed to lecturing behind a desk. That said, i really wish you could talk more about your composition selection and way of thinking when building the frame. Would love to see more of those in depth tutorials . Cheers.
I have been watching your videos since my first dslr, an oly e520. Still here some years later, while waiting for my panny G9 to arrive. Cheers Gordon!
By far the best tutorial i have watched ive searched for hours and came across quick rubbish videos but after watching this i now understand long exposure. Great in depth tutorial mate. Thank you ✊

You kept my attention riveted on every word and image you presented. Just ordered your book as well. I think you may have a coffee in the mix very soon, too. Thank you and keep up the great work.

Hi Gordon, Have just finished my first read of your 'In Camera' book. What a great read, I'm sure I'll be starting it again soon. Love the layout and that I can pick it up and put it down and not lose track. My favourite was the Rock at Dinant (p185) That reflection is amazing! When's the next book coming out? 😉
Thanks Glenn! I actually started curating photos for a second volume, but got side-tracked by all my reviews here - it's very hard to squeeze time in for a book! But i would like to do another, maybe a bit different next time... Glad you liked that Dinant photo! There was so much to see in that small town!
I'm always sceptical when UA-cam decides which video I'm going to watch next. I made it until about nine minutes........before ordering your book from Amazon. It will be here tomorrow. Damn you UA-cam and thank you Gordon!
Thankyou Dan! I'm glad you found my video and found it useful enough to go for the book too - I hope you'll be happy with it, let me know what you think!

Brilliant video and best of all your using a G9, I've got the G7 and really justly just getting to grips with but it's so nice to recognise the menu settings and for low light long exposure photos. Brilliant thank you.
Great video Gordon, I just purchased your book because I liked your teaching so much! I’ve been using a lower f-stop (more open aperture) to get some great shallow depth of field shots, but the information in your book “How to Get Perfect Pictures Straight Out of the Camera“ on closing the aperture on a lens (a higher f-stop) increasing the depth of field, to grow light spikes through tree leaves by using a small aperture is simply amazing. The accompanying photograph, the “Autumnal Veil” tops it off! Wonderful book!
Thanks! Remember to only use really small apertures for those effects, NOT for general shooting as they can soften the overall quality. So when you see an opportunity for spikes, close it down, but otherwise go for larger apertures! PS - your music channel sounds great!
@@cameralabs Thank you...and yes, I've not been opening up the aperture for general photography but that will shortly change!. Question: I often compare iPhone pics with my new Cannon M50 Mark II and and the iPhone really gets the blue sky correct and the M50 a little washed out. I've been using the Manual Mode to learn but Landscape is better while HDR Art Bold is a little cartoonish. I like what you say about not having a naked sky as in The Foggy Church or washing out the sky as in The High Key but to get a bluer sky what would you suggest? Excellent primer Gordon. One other thing I always teach people is to make sure they remove their camera strap. (I never use one anyway). But a camera strap hanging off your camera during a long exposure acts like a small sail and catch the slightest breeze which runs the risk of moving your camera and introducing blur of the unwanted kind. Excellent video once again.
Really great guide Gordon. I do love long exposure photos but in my experience most cameras max out at 30secs exposure. You can use bulb mode but without a shutter release that means holding the button down which isn't possibly for that long without wobbles which just means you miss some opportunities as you didn't bring all you kit of that walk, your camera didn't seem to have this limitation which is cool. Another good thing to remember for dusk shooting down in Brighton is a coat!
This was sooo helpful! I’m getting my first DSLR so I can start getting better photos for my travel blog but I had absolutely no idea where to start. This is awesome! 👌🏼
A really helpful and well presented video thank you. Will be using your tips this week as i have all the gear and no idea! Thanks again and a book you say.
Mr. Laing, as a budding long exposure nooby, I really appreciate you taking the time to make these video's. Your expertise, insight, tips and tricks are very much appreciated. I would write more superlatives, but I'm off to find your book selections and purchase a copy or two. Cheers.
Thank you for this and thank too to my friend Ben Harvey for the videography. I have just downloaded the kindle version of your book and look forward to absorbing what I need to learn over the coming days and weeks.
from which test you say they are the best ? Lee i use as well but they have color aberration, im using nisi filters now and is way way more professional system.
Have just bought some new photography gear, an XT3 (might be forced to sell m43 stuff to fund), and Gordon’s “In camera” book. Plan to take both on my Pembrokeshire holiday next week and try to take my skills to a new level. Thanks for all the hard work over the years Gordon 👍🏻
Thanks so much, as a total beginner that’s been struggling with Long Exposure you have given me much more straight forward information without gobbledygook, in plain English. I’m in Blackpool next weekend and will give it a try, but it will be daylight so I’ll try with my 10 stop. Yes, I’m going to look at getting your book too
Thanks! You'll get some great results in Blackpool, night or day. If you're near Liverpool, that can be great too - I've used LEs on both cathedrals, the Radio City Tower and down at Albert Dock. Thanks also for considering my book, I hope you grab a copy and find it useful!
Gordon Laing I’m in Horwich so Liverpool, Southport, Blackpool are all easy to get to. Going to be midday Sunday so I’ll just try and see what happens.
Great video, thanks. Just venturing into trying long exposures. Unfortunately my budget wasn’t there for a good system at the moment so I got a screw on filter however I’ve realised it’s not going to be dark enough for what I want! That being said it’ll come in useful those times when it’s just too bright and sunny!
Perfect. Thank you Gordon. Great vlog, and just the type of information that I am in need of at the moment. It helps to see it all assembled and put to use before a purchase. Now I feel more informed about it. Thank you!
If anyone is thinking about getting a square filter system I highly recommend the Nisi V5 pro system. It has the circular polarizer closest to the glass and can hold 3 square filters either 100x100 or 100x150. I absolutely love mine.

Subscribed and watching Gordon's videos since 2012, absolutely helpful and well made videos. Thank you very much!
Thanks!
Thanks for the good video. This is the easiest and most well explained video that I have watched.
Very helpful I love long exposure images and I'm quite new so I didn't know about these nd filters love the video very easy to understand
You're welcome! Hope you get to try it out!
I knew a bit about long exposure but the info on the filters was good to learn! Thanks Gordon.
You're welcome!

This was sooo helpful! I’m getting my first DSLR so I can start getting better photos for my travel blog but I had absolutely no idea where to start. This is awesome! 👌🏼

Awesome video! You have done an amazing job explaining this topic.
I really loved your video. It was well worth my time watching it!

Glad you liked it!
I really enjoyed this, along with all your tutorials cheers from North Wales.
Thanks, you are very welcome!
A really helpful and well presented video thank you. Will be using your tips this week as i have all the gear and no idea! Thanks again and a book you say.
You're welcome, good luck with your long exposures!
Great information! Thank you! You speak very naturally off the cuff!
Mr. Laing, as a budding long exposure nooby, I really appreciate you taking the time to make these video's. Your expertise, insight, tips and tricks are very much appreciated. I would write more superlatives, but I'm off to find your book selections and purchase a copy or two. Cheers.
Thanks! I hope you enjoy my book - thanks for ordering a copy!
Thank you for this and thank too to my friend Ben Harvey for the videography. I have just downloaded the kindle version of your book and look forward to absorbing what I need to learn over the coming days and weeks.
Thanks for ordering my book Stephen, and yes, Ben did a great job here!
from which test you say they are the best ? Lee i use as well but they have color aberration, im using nisi filters now and is way way more professional system.
Have just bought some new photography gear, an XT3 (might be forced to sell m43 stuff to fund), and Gordon’s “In camera” book. Plan to take both on my Pembrokeshire holiday next week and try to take my skills to a new level. Thanks for all the hard work over the years Gordon 👍🏻
You're very welcome, thanks for buying my book! Have a great trip!
_Sehr_ sympathisch und praxisnah erklärt, ganz natürlich, effektiv und überaus lehrreich. *Danke* fürs Video! -
Thanks so much, as a total beginner that’s been struggling with Long Exposure you have given me much more straight forward information without gobbledygook, in plain English.
A very informative and relaxing experience. Thank you. 👍
You're very welcome!
Remember you can always shoot just before it gets really dark - you may not need a filter then.
Loved it Gordon, thanks for all your hard work mate, cheers, Bob,
You're welcome Bon, thanks!
Perfect. Thank you Gordon. Great vlog, and just the type of information that I am in need of at the moment. It helps to see it all assembled and put to use before a purchase. Now I feel more informed about it. Thank you!
You're very welcome! I hope to do more of these in the future...
Thanks again Gordon. I look forward to learning more from you!
Awesome video, thank you!
If anyone is thinking about getting a square filter system I highly recommend the Nisi V5 pro system. It has the circular polarizer closest to the glass and can hold 3 square filters either 100x100 or 100x150. I absolutely love mine.
Hi gordon great video very well explained ive been scratching my head for ages about long exposure photography.
Glad you found it useful, I hope you get to try it out!
@@cameralabs yeah will do mate.
