Feed bunker thought rather than hinging the feed barrier why not put a sloping piece off the concrete back wall so that the hay slides forward towards the cows. Bales will be raised a bit when put in there tho
Great set up in the new shed. Re the feed bunkers don’t alter the feed barrier, but place a length of stable board at the back on an angle so straw does not get stuck, would be like the base of the Donovan feed rail ….straw falls away from the back wall as they feed🤔🤔
Great to see the " Cooo Palace" come into its own. Hope the Vet / PD person appreciated the new improved working environment. 😊 Teparii seemed to work well too.😊
Re the feed bunkers. Can’t you make up a full length metal panel and put it on a 45 degree angle from the rear wall to the ground? That way the food automatically slides forwards as the cows eat it.
Do the empty cows get a second chance? Both bulls were ultimately put with all cows if I remember right, so no telling if A bull is at fault. With those great percentages, both Euro and Mike did their stuff well. Congrats on the numbers! Glad too that you got to go back to a t-shirt for awhile. Nice of you to try to find people to help the student with his dissertation.
On the bunkers could you make a false wall with Stock board and some box section formed into a similar shape to the ones you showed there, hand ratchet top off barrier to pull it in. but if like stone fork could be a while! When you put in new bales can you not just push up left overs.
Could cutting and welding the bunker void any warranties? Also, as you fold over the rail you're lowering the top rail. Will the coos still get in? Best to try and put a slope in the bunker so the feed flows/falls towards the coos.
Great video! As a private water engineer if the raw borehole water is ok for the cattle shed don’t filter it leave it as it is, then filter and uv the water for the houses/ farm shop. Worth keeping in mind if the raw water has a lot of manganese in it that affects cows fertility!! And would be better filtered out.
Nooooo don’t modify the gates. You need to move the bottom too because they are probably already stretched as far as their neck allows. You might end up with some over the dividers. Could be bad. The building is amazing, really. I would push the hay all to one end of the bale space it will make it available.
You could always leave what straw is there in the bunk currently and let it force the new straw out to the cows. Costs you about a bale worth of straw and juat clean it out when you're done feeding for the year. Shouldn't even get too gross if you're starting with dry straw when the cows first come in
That handling system is really working well you flew trough scanning the cows so well designed that must make life a lot easier working you're animals Really enjoyed the video looking forward to the next one
Epic video yet again, the cows go through that crush far easier and it will get better day by day, The feed area your on about, put a diagonal metal plate/ sheet so the food always falls forward, I would also board up the other area even tho you said it gets far less bad weather if it’s boarded your cutting down the area to which bad weather can get it
Good scanning results gate lady has a nice voice for narrating your videos have you bought a new yard scraper for the fendt for cleaning out the cows yet
Your bunker feeders you should make them hinge at the top so when they push in to eat. They swing in to let cattle reach further. Seen it done on a dairy cow bunker feeders.
what about fabricating something on the back wall rather than cutting the new barrier down. something with box section and sheet metal? the pull from the bottom to a 45degree pitch and slip bolts at the ends to hold it?
I was going to agree with others but thinking of some of the newer barrier designs, allowing them to lean a bit will make it easier eating lower but if you can find a way to let bales to fall forwards it should reduce the risk of foot problems and smaller cows missing out. Even some of your more heavy duty pallets with minimal chainsaw work, sloped should bring it forward.
Looking how far back the cows have got in the bunker I would honestly just slope say the bottom third of the back of the bunker that way you don’t lose much space still be easy enough to load a bale into but when they eat from the front it will steadily fall forward
Get a bale unroller and auger bucket do away with feed bunker and hand buckets to put corn out put both of mine on JCB Qfit brackets works well the handling system and shed are looking spot on
If you put a chain at the top of both ends of the barrier it would allow the barrier to tilt in enough on top that the cattle should be able to reach the most of the silage
shed is top notch with it been level floor if you want you can tip grain in it if you go out of cows only fault that pool of water in middle.Handling system is tremendous and bulls done well
In stead of modifying the bunker feeder "gate", and half-wall beneath it. Do a test run with a slope against the back wall, let gravity push the feed to the cows, just a wooden mockup for starters.
With the trough can you not fit a false back wall that using a cam or similar to move forwards to push the remaining feed. No need to cut up the feed fence. Just another gate would do. Or even just a slope up against the back wall so as they eat the front of the bale it slides down the slope and forwards towards them... And only one broken computer again 👍
Cracking intro from gateblady 😊 wouldn’t it be better to knock up a frame from timber to put on the back wall off the feeder pen rather than take a grinder and welder to the new galvanised rail? 😊
Rip those flipping bunkers out and clad the other end at eves straight across. Also the panels in handling and bull pens why didn't you have a 1.2 or 1.5m one then no way they can jump out but plenty of ventilation? But very nice shed! I wish I had gone higher and had a bigger overhang. But at the time it seems right it's only after you use the shed the small changes become obvious.
The light in that building is amazing needs a milking parlour in the corner and 200 cows 😂 Volume washer round the crush may look dear but will pay for itself in no time. Could you not just feed the straw ration down the centre barrier?
why no feed everything up the main alley as some say mixer wagon when more cattle all problems solved oh except now you have empty space going to waste
@@CrawfordsFarm1 regards the roof windows and air movement in the shed. Tom pemberton had a lad swing round past and measure the heat through the roof windows and let off smoke bombs to review the air movement. Hi might to you a turn since you are on UA-cam.

Gate Lady VO. Great Stuff.

Wonderful shed Crawford. Great result with preg checks. The gate system is pretty slick. Loved the video. Cheers to Gate Lady. 👍😊👍
For your straw problem. Could you not put a feed barrier on the bedded side.
Or
Some sort of false floor that tips up toward the front
Some shed coos seem to live it your open to the best Scottish weather. 2000 hrs and engine out OUCH good job warranty work
Like your new barn..good set up .🐄🐃🐂👍🏻
Re the feed bunkers. Can’t you make up a full length metal panel and put it on a 45 degree angle from the rear wall to the ground? That way the food automatically slides forwards as the cows eat it.

Regarding the straw bunkers would it be possible to devise a movable back wall w which could tip forward when the cows have eaten all they can reach🤔
Could cutting and welding the bunker void any warranties? Also, as you fold over the rail you're lowering the top rail. Will the coos still get in? Best to try and put a slope in the bunker so the feed flows/falls towards the coos.

Keenan feeder wagon the next machinery purchase for when shed is full?
Absolutely fantastic set up u have. Really well done
Not good for baled silage
Great video Crawford. 👍🏼 Enjoyed watching.
Is that the Gate Lady on opening commentary?
If it is, it's a hell of an upgrade
🤣

Couldn't you build a sloped floor for the feeders, easier than cutting new barriers up
Yes you could but loading the bunkers would become more difficult if you’ve seen how he’s been loading them
a galvanised wedge at the bottom of the feeder would help the hay fall forward, slide in, slide out for cleaning. maybe ! good luck with it.
Time is precious, brilliant system 👍

Sounds a great idea what you have planned for the water in the shed, nothing worse that trying to defrost water pipes on a freezing day 👍🏻
Hi great video . For the feeders I would put a plater/grid at the back and hinge it forwards. Set you hinge point 300mm forward
Try putting 45% slope at the back 2 kick feed forward
Is there a reason the highlands aren't in the shed as well?
Handling system working a treat!. Thought you might have a tractor mounted bedding machine like the one you had a loan of last year!
Good scanning results gate lady has a nice voice for narrating your videos have you bought a new yard scraper for the fendt for cleaning out the cows yet
Looks a great setup it will be pleasant to work in 👍
Mucker the gatelady has a voice 🤣🤣🤣. You have done well with the cows The boys have been busy 👍👍👍. The shed looks the 🐕🐕🐕 rear swingers 👍👍👍👍👍

what about fabricating something on the back wall rather than cutting the new barrier down. something with box section and sheet metal? the pull from the bottom to a 45degree pitch and slip bolts at the ends to hold it?
Bunker feeders just put a slant plate at the back 👌🏻
that's what I was thinking it doesn't have to be much 👍
What about rearranging the concrete panels to push straw towards cows or a sloping floor
With the feeding area, why couldn't you just move the barrier back a bit so the cows can reach the back?
Because the bale wouldn't fit in.
I was going to agree with others but thinking of some of the newer barrier designs, allowing them to lean a bit will make it easier eating lower but if you can find a way to let bales to fall forwards it should reduce the risk of foot problems and smaller cows missing out. Did you guys build a midden when building the shed to scrape the scrape passages into?
You could try putting bords at an angel so the bale would slide closer to the cows
Get a bale unroller and auger bucket do away with feed bunker and hand buckets to put corn out put both of mine on JCB Qfit brackets works well the handling system and shed are looking spot on
Got an auger bucket just need to put brackets on. Feeding ammonia straw down the passage will blow all over, i will figure out the bunkers 🤞
Understand the sky lights for lights but they are the weak link in a roof. If you get a straw chopper stones can make a mess of the sky lights???
Where abouts do you push your muck to is it just stone at the end of the shed👍
What was the vets opinion on the handling system as he will see several systems Could Bateman make and supply the new tilting barriers ?
If you put a chain at the top of both ends of the barrier it would allow the barrier to tilt in enough on top that the cattle should be able to reach the most of the silage
Are you going to get a big bulk tank to the pot ale syrup?
Shifting to silage in a weeks time so be grand as we are now
shed is top notch with it been level floor if you want you can tip grain in it if you go out of cows only fault that pool of water in middle.Handling system is tremendous and bulls done well
Gate lady v.o.great, thanks. Handling system amazing, well designed. Father/son q/a???
In stead of modifying the bunker feeder "gate", and half-wall beneath it. Do a test run with a slope against the back wall, let gravity push the feed to the cows, just a wooden mockup for starters.
Hi Crawford. Will you do the hoof trimming now that you have the internal chute?
It’s times like this when you remember Percy.
With the trough can you not fit a false back wall that using a cam or similar to move forwards to push the remaining feed. No need to cut up the feed fence. Just another gate would do. Stick a couple of pallets in the back of the "too wide feeder"? # I'm not a farmer and haven't a clue
.
Could you put feeder panel on rail so cows can push it in @ 2/3 foot, they’ll be able to get the feed to the back wall
are those simmerthal cows ?
Cracking intro from gateblady 😊 wouldn’t it be better to knock up a frame from timber to put on the back wall off the feeder pen rather than take a grinder and welder to the new galvanised rail? 😊
hi bud cant you build something a the back of them feeders to bring it in so you dont have to cut your new rails
Instead of cutting down the head yoke why not fit a steel frame with a steel plate at an angle so everything slides down to the yokes as in a hopper
Hope Gate Lady got a good pay rise with the promotion to Voiceover Lady
What was the story with the dogs... you clearly got them back okay. How far did they get?
Mile away or so
@@CrawfordsFarm1 oh not too bad, mearly scouting their territory 😅
what did the vet say about the new installation ?
Big fan, thought the rubber floor was great
@@CrawfordsFarm1 what if you make a sloping wall in the feeding area , half a bale wide and 1m sloping
You have a lot of cows and calefs and bulls

Could you not just feed the straw ration down the centre barrier?
Is it just meal u feed the cows
Oh no unhappy kev if his tractor is on the sick bay have to give him the grey fergie and a 2 furrow plough😂
You should really have a power washer at the crush to clean it all down
why no feed everything up the main alley as some say mixer wagon when more cattle all problems solved oh except now you have empty space going to waste
Straw blower next on the list ?
I think you'll regret that scrape passage once you start scraping out once a week.
scraped once so far, scrape tomorrow, average just under 2 weeks and its a 15 minute job. think it should be grand
😊😊😊😊😊😊
Put an angle wood at back of ware u feed cows
Have you got any twins?
Too late a scan to see any twins

Add a slope at the back
On the bale feed bay I'd just put a sheet of stainless steel or checker plate on an angle and gravity would do the rest of the job

feed troughs instead of floor and angled sheet boarding in hay bunker ... thank me later ,, yuz bandit
You need straw chopper now
Buy yourself a fork instead of messing with the feed rails🤣🤣🤣🤣
That handle on the exit on the crush is a accident waiting to happen. Looks like it's removable do yourself a favour in advance.
aye good idea
I think it looks like it has been installed upside down (pointy end out). If not removing it, flipping it may be good.
