When I was growing up here in Claremont New Hampshire, this family down the street from me had 5 Oldsmobiles, 1 was a 1971 Cutlass, a 68 442, 455 and turbo 400 trani, a 1969 Hurst 442, 350 rocket, obviously 4 speed, a 1970 W-31? 455 4 speed Hurst Olds, and a 1972 442, 350 rocket, TH 350, each family member had one, husband was 70w-31hurst, wife 69 Hurst Olds, son 1 72 olds, son 2 1968 olds, daughter had 1971 Cutlass.... This was where I learned how to do body work.
Man.....Wish I hadn't sold mine back in 1982. 442's are heavy, but they have torque like nobody's business. The sound of the 4 barrel opening up.....the growl like only big block
The day they substituted plastic bumpers for chrome ones was the day I lost my love for the modern car. Automobiles are made today to be disposable, like staplers or microwave ovens. 40yrs from now, how many Mustangs/gomaraos/challengers/etc do you think will be around to be driven. Plastic has a life span and it breaks down over time, with or without protection. The same cannot be said about steel. The look and feel of metal, wood, cloth, etc is what gave these cars their souls.....plastic has no soul and never will. Just my .2
I lost my love for Cutlass and 442 when I saw a UGLY 1973 model...I knew then that muscle cars were gone...64 thru 72 were sweet!!! and power to boot!! But for me, I need a 4 speed, 455, and a Posi rearend...a hurst olds from 68 or 69 would do just fine also, except for lack of 4 speeds
I guess it depends on your perspective. Let's see now, down hill from there, huh? The pre-smog era muscle cars were gas guzzling, smog spewing, crappy handling, ground pounding, raw behemoths compared to what is coming from the big three today. If you can afford one, they are much more refined ground pounders that handle and drive so much better and get respectable gas mileage in many cases. Or, better yet, you can build the car you want that Detroit never did. These are the good old days my friends. For car guys, it has never been better.
It's planned obsolescence from the big three today. Too much plastic. If you protected the iron of old cars from rust, they can last virtually forever. Cars that drive for you and separate you from the road don't have any soul and aren't that fun to drive.
Again, that is why these are the good ole days. You can build your dream muscle car from the '60's or '70's better than Detroit did, more dependable with better performance and economy with parts that are typically readily available. The only limiting factor for anyone would be their imagination and $$. For example I have a customer that stuffed a CTS-V drivetrain into a '68 Firebird convertible. It's not a show car. It's a sleeper and a badass driver. Then there's the guy who grafted a 1964 GTO convertible body onto a late model GTO chassis, drive train and interior. What a bitchin' ride. Hey, even my '01 Cobra will crash if I take my hands off the wheel and fail to apply the brakes. Soul? Drive an SRT-10 Dodge Ram, or a Viper, or a? and then tell me they don't have any soul. I'll bet if the Roman Empire was still here they would make a bid for chariots. So, you all can waa waa waa about obsolescence and all that crap, or get with the program and get creative and enjoy life. I used to be an anal egotistical narrow-minded complainer and was so miserable. Some people aren't happy unless they're miserable. Is that you?
If you're a psychologist, sure. Yes, engineering and materials are the best they've ever been. Yet when a road car goes over 300mph, when fuel efficiency is 200mpg, this won't be the "golden" age anymore for those metrics either. In a track lap race I watched here on UA-cam, the Viper was pitted against other fast cars, and driving a brand new Viper around the track as fast as you can, parts were literally falling off the car. I don't want to own a car like that, whatever you think. We all have opinions, and you're not entitled to have others agree with yours.
I’ve had many of these Oldsmobile’s , and I would much rather have one that does not need a concourse restoration, to me that means it was very messed up before 😂
Nice. I had a 70 Cutlass SX, 455 ci, TH400 trans with a B&M shift kit, Edelbrock hi rise manifold, headers and cherry bombs. If I recall, I could chirp 3rd. Only got high 14's at the drag strip though, cause it spent too much time smoking those 50's I had on the rear. I always wanted the scoop hood for it. Stupidly, I ended up selling it for next to nothing as I was kind of losing interest. Wish I had it back now. They don't make 'em like that anymore-
I had one of these in 1980 it was the nicest car i ever owned. You can steer it with 1 finger not like today. I drives so smooth, not like anything of today. and all kinds of tourk. I used to put armerall on the white leather seets and go pick up my girl friend. She kepted slipping off them. I would die for that car. I'll trade ya my 2012 chrysler 300c for it. lol
My 442,s and w-30,s Auto and stick always did well or how I wanted them to perform with the gassaline and mpg reasonable to me always I thought atleast back then when I would put a lot of miles on them.175,000k as I always replaced the timing chain with real gears and as far as cruiseing to Cape Cod from NY or to Florida did well I thought again,I was maby 20 years old. But when I Punched open the secondary,s it just gulped gas.I could go on for ever. Oh no disrespect but when I said I was doing a burnout forget it As I said before I didn't really want to twist these motors over55000rpm,s but I had 50,s 60,s, soft compound tires in The rear and doing about 45 to 50 mph I punch my beast sybal stock accept for the rear meats and leave rubber forever until I would almost lose control and thought I would flip the car over!Over and Out God Bless all ow you guys and Gals!
Yes, very nice, but it was the beginning of the smog/low compression years.. ALL brands suffered. Last best year for this car and so many others was 1970! The W-30 in that year would be right up there with your 454 Chevelle or 455 GTO... or Buick GSX and at 370 bhp it should be... Just my 2 cents, and a former 1968 442 owner....
They most definitely were available with automatics...the 442 stood for 4 barrell 4 speed dual exhaust on f85's before 1968...and yes I Googled it!!!....lol Have a Great Holiday!! Enjoy your family and friends today!!
@@buff6637 Have a good Memorial day also. I'm kinda touchy about this subject, LOL. I have a 65 442 that I've owned since 1988. Its got the 2 speed automatic Olds called the Jetaway. Chevy called it the Power Glide. Its pretty much a given somebody is going to tell me I don't have a Real 442 because it has an automatic trans at a car show or cruise-in. That is probably the nicest 4-4-2 W-30 ive seen. It literally looks brand new. Excellent build quality. Thanks for the awesome video!

I feel inclined to agree with you

AINT NO MUSTANG COOLER THEN A 70 OLDS 442. WHAT A LOSER FOR EVEN THINKING THAT.
1971. The sunset of the muscle car era. It was all downhill from then on.
1971, such an early sunset but you're right. The zenith was 1969 I think though some say 1970.

Was never a huge fan of 442s, But id love to own one. Id rather have a Charger or Challenger of the same period.
This car was totaled last year in Missouri

Nope your 100% wrong. 442s came with automatics. Just Google it and prove yourself Wrong.

look for feedback from verified buyers and don't spend a penny until you've seen the car in-person.
