The Oldsmobile 4-4-2 (also known as the 442) is a muscle car produced by Oldsmobile between the 1964 and 1987 model years. Introduced as an option package for US-sold F-85 and Cutlass models, it became a model in its own right from 1968 to 1971, spawned the Hurst/Olds in 1968, then reverted to an option through the mid-1970s. The name was revived in the 1980s on the rear-wheel drive Cutlass Supreme and early 1990s as an option package for the new front-wheel drive Cutlass Calais.
The "4-4-2" name (pronounced "Four-four-two") derives from the original car's four-barrel carburetor, four-speed manual transmission, and dual exhausts [1][2][3] (Some maintain that the '2' indicated a limited-slip differential). It was originally written "4-4-2" (with badging showing hyphens between the numerals),[1] and remained hyphenated throughout Oldsmobile's use of the designation. Beginning in 1965, the 4-4-2s standard transmission was a three-speed manual along with an optional two-speed automatic and four-speed manual, but were still badged as "4-4-2"s. Because of this change, from 1965 on, according to Oldsmobile brochures and advertisements, the 4-4-2 designation referred to the 400 cubic inch engine, four-barrel carburetor, and dual exhausts. By 1968 badging was shortened to simply "442", but Oldsmobile brochures and internal documents continued to use the "4-4-2" model designation.
1970
1970 Oldsmobile 4-4-2
1970 was the pinnacle of performance from Oldsmobile.[14][15] In order to keep up in the horsepower arms-race, General Motors dropped the cap on engine size in 1970, and Oldsmobile responded by making the Olds 455 V8 the standard 4-4-2 engine. Output was 365 hp (272 kW) and 500 lb⋅ft (680 N⋅m), with a 370 hp (276 kW) variant available with the W30 option. The 1970 model year can be identified by its vertical bars in silver grille, rectangular parking lights in front bumper, and vertical tail lights.
The revised body style and increased performance resulted in the 4-4-2 being awarded pace car duties at the Indianapolis 500 race in 1970. A high-performance W-30 package was offered, which added a fiberglass hood (option W25) with functional air scoops and low-restriction air cleaner, aluminum intake manifold, special camshaft, cylinder heads, distributor, and carburetor. Two W-30 equipped 4-4-2 Vista Cruisers were produced by special order. Rear shoulder seat belts were optional at $23.[7]
Motor Trend tested a 4-4-2 W-30 with the four-speed manual transmission and 3.91:1 rear gears, clocking a quarter mile time of 14.2 seconds at 102 mph (164 km/h). However, the magazine noted that Oldsmobile engineers had earlier posted a best of 13.7 seconds on the same test car with a fresh tune.
New options for the 1970 4-4-2 included GM's variable-ratio power steering (option N47), a console-mounted Hurst Dual/Gate shifter for use with the Turbo Hydra-matic transmission, and aluminum differential housing and cover (option W27). All Oldsmobile V8s received new Positive Valve Rotators[clarification needed] for the 1970s to increase engine valve life.
1971
1971 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 convertible
Despite an industry-wide softening of muscle car sales, the 4-4-2 returned in 1971 with only minor modifications from the previous year. Engine output was down for 1971 due to a lower compression ratio (8.5:1). The base 455 was rated at 340 hp (254 kW), with the W-30 achieving a rating of 350 hp (261 kW). The W-27 option was downgraded to an aluminum cover for the cast iron differential housing.
The 1971 4-4-2 was available in a hardtop coupe and convertible body type. The sport coupe disappeared for the first time since 1964, only to return in 1972. 1971 Model Year Appearance changes included a black grille with silver surround, silver headlight bezels, round parking lights in front bumper, and horizontal tail lights. - Авто та транспорт
Four, Four, Two - that's all you had to say 'back then' and everybody knew what you were talking about. You've finished the kit with a perfect reproduction of my first 442 ride. It has just enough detail to look realistic without apearing gawdy. I just relived my first ride in a Four Four Two - thanks to you.
Great Build and Finish!
Nice work! The points on the seat backs are seat back releases… press the button to enter the back seat. Ash trays were in the rear arm rests.
yup!
27:00 sounds like background music from Bewitched, when Samantha is doing something sneaky behind Dagwood’s back
My first car was a 70, W-30, silver with black stripes. My brother bought a brand new 68, W-30, yellow with black stripes! Love these cars.
Nice detailing for this build. Here's some optional tips- For anyone buying this kit for future reference painting some of the engine parts for a more accurate representation of the actual car- oil fill tube and cap are blue engine color, not black. Fuel pump is aluminum color on bottom, dichromate (goldish) on top and same dichromate look on top of master cylinder cover, and the oil filter was white if an ACDelco. Exhaust manifolds were cast iron gray. Also, W-30 had an aluminum intake that was left unpainted from the factory. Grilles are flat black plastic in the centers with black 442 numerals on driver side.
As usual, a great build, without going bonkers on super-detail obsession. Keep 'em coming.
Such a beautiful model of the 442
The gentleman's muscle car! Love the subdued body color.
I always wanted to do the red/black 442 from Demolition Man and now I can finally build one! I know the movie was a 70 and this is a 71 but they were near identical unlike the year to year changes on the Chevelle and GTOs.
Watched this build like the kit so I went and bought it 👍
Great looking build Chris, Kutgw buddy.
Love this car. The Bankers Hot Rod. Grew up with these. Amazing!
Looooove it, awesome build up !!! 😇👍🏼
Long time without watching a real American beauty like this. Great model Chris.
Awesome 😎😎‼️‼️ GBA🤗🤗 Gary.
Great build Cris, really enjoyed this one
Very well done Oldsmobile 442 Chris! That Metallic Gold really pops along with that white interior! I'd have to agree that the Buicks and Oldsmobiles looked pretty mean then!
Man thank you for doing these vids and reviews. Your inspiring
Sweet as always Chris 👍
Absolutely badass bud!
Well executed build! Gotta grab this kit.
Nice looking car- thanks for the build.
Great work as always.
Awesome build , the finish is great .
WOW , Mike 😊
This 442 Olds kit will be one I buy soon. Thanks for this video. Neat build as always .
Nice lookin Olds! I like your choice of paint color, and that decal sheet is great, I like that it has the side trim.
Nice to see these vids. Always spices up My days
Was going say the same he made me like building models fun and enjoying
This has been a much needed kit of this classic body style since Jo-han went under. Testors made a very limited copy of it that almost impossible to find. The convertible that was brought out a few years back has a completely different rear half, more like a Monte Carlo. Revell did this one right! Having owned a 72 for more than 30 yrs, i can say they did their homework on this right down to the tiny AC vents on the bottom of the dash. Even better, it goes together like a dream. After building this, you will wish your favorite muscle car had a kit this good!
Just go it!! Can't wait to build it!! Thx!!
Got it
Great video as usual, .keep them coming I'll keep watching.
I went to my local Hobby Lobby today for the first time.
I've been meaning to do this for a long time and to be honest I was a little underwhelmed at their limited model selection. I did buy some little tools and alligator clips and whatnot to make painting easier. However this Oldsmobile will be the next kit that I build. I absolutely love this car:-)
I feel ya. I've been to HL and the model selection can be weak at times. I don't go in without a coupon.
My dad had a 1968 Olds 88. His one hobby was to wash and polish the car almost every day. Never had any rust on the car and would sell his cars every 5 years and buy a new one. I have an old jeep wrangler 2000 with rust galore....dads love of cars never rubbed off on me for sure. LOL
Great vid Chris as always.
I had a '67 Hurst Harry Old's model years ago I have it to my buddy he had a '70 4 4 2 W-30 I I drove a few times myself I had a '67 4 4 2 that I swapped a '66 Old's 425ci that I built with different year parts putting out 525 HP with automatic as well as my '64 F-85 Deluxe with '67 330ci 400 HP and 4-speed always loved the old Oldsmobile's I had 10 of them in my '70's & '80's six of them were just drivetrain part's to put my engines together body's were damaged but the '64 & '67 were solid body's always wanted to buy by buddy's '70 W-30 but like always some thing's aren't ment to happen...
The red inner fender wells in the front was only W-30 cars regular 4 4 2 was black and as well they were not ashtrays on the back of the seat that was the button to move the seat ahead for rear passenger to get in but you are doing a great job the fined rear end cover is aluminum same with the cluster housing that it glues together with it's the W-25 option with black axel tubes the regular rear end was black throughout and the radiator fan should be a 7 blade that is aluminum as well. My buddy and myself seen the Real Hurst Harry Old's in the states take out the gaurd rail back in the late '60's it had two 425 Tornado engine's one in front and one in the trunk it was awesome to see smoking all four tires...
The intake should be aluminum because they really were made by winters castings...
Awesome build, gonna get this kit for sure, might have to put street slicks on it and a few other mash ideas, thx for the vid
That's a GREAT kit!!!!! 👍👍
I own a 1968 Olds 4-4-2, what's on the backside of the front seats is a pushbutton latch to swing the backs forward to climb into the back seat.
Thanks!
I had a 70 W30 same body color except with lighter gold stripes with black interior. Always wanted to build this car but could never find it. This was before internet. Love it.
Very nice model! The Olds 442 is my favorite as well! The color is great with the white! I'm glad you didn't let the bent windshield pillar stop you from the build! You have great discipline with your builds! Your paint details are great!
Thank you very much!
Cool always 😎
I personally owned a 67' Olds 442,coupe. Automatic transmission,2 speed, powerguild. You couldn't kill that transmission. 75 miles an hour in low gear. 373 posi-rearend. Super quick.
My hands were shaking just thinking about how hard it must have been to make such perfect and small details. I love this so much!!
Thank you so much!
looks great. wish I could buy the real thing new off the showroom floor.
Oldsmobile, Buick , Pontiac , Chevy , Cadillac .. GM was kicking hass in the 70s
Great build! I cannot wait to get mine started now!!
Omg. Been looking for a 442 model forever. I owned a 65 and a 71 w30. My 71 had black stripes and interior, which looked better, I think. It was bored 30 over with a lopey cam, cut out headers, and pushing 450 HP. For the record, the 65 was my favorite of the two. Thanks for this info!
Wow as always !! Got my kit today and am turning it into a Cutlass S. You always give me great ideas and insperation !!!
Awesome mate👍
Working on this kit now
brings back memories from being a kid, that would look nice on my un built convertible, that gold would, i wish revell would release the 72 supreme with the formal top, was my favorite, and since i build what I want, use the hurst olds package, some goodies and the hood off this car, a yet un created supreme body, and possibly some a,m,t, parts off thier 69 kit to get what is in my mind, a holy grail car.
beautiful build chris, i have the 69 hurst and the revell convertible yet unbuilt, this one makes my mouth water! gotta git it! my imagination goeth crazy!
~you definitely have a lot of patience~must be retired~great build as you always do~keep enjoying what you do~
Great job Chris turned out awesome 👍
Very nice build. Love your color choice. That model has some very great details. Thanks for sharing.
That’s weird, I just bought one and was considering painting it gold. 👍
The huge circle in the clear parts tree, you could laughingly use it as a huge steering wheel.
Absolutely beautiful Build & video production👊 cheers🍻🍺 KC Cradle Mountain Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺🤝🇺🇸😊😎👍
Nice build Chris! A 442 is a awesome car.
The little square chrome piece on the back of the bucket seat was the seat back release. The lever on the bench seats was down on the bottom corner.
Nice job as always, looks awesome. You cost me way too much money lol! Keep up the great work!
Looks awesome Chris as always
One of my favorite cars! Great job bud. Have a Happy Thanksgiving 😊 !
Nice looking Olds 👌
I know it's your model to do your way but I'm glad you painted the inners red I had a green 72 and it looked silly with them because they used to fade and turn pink lol
My brother has one. Rotted out bought it for 400 bucks. But turned around and sold the rear bumper for 500😅. My brother could wheel and deal with the best of them
I looked online and the front fenders are red, inside and out! Too 2 too cool!
My Dad’s 1970 Olds Delta 88 Custom looked very much like the 442. At least with the front end and side profile - sort of a stretched version with 4 doors. It had a 455 cu in ‘Rocket V8” engine.
Thank you! I’ve been waiting for this one since you got it in. I got mine stashed away til I’m ready…from Model Roundup! 😎👍🏾
Have a great Thanksgiving!
This morning when I saw the thumbnail to this video I was blown away how great it looked.
Love how you chose not the most popular colors but one that is still seen a lot.
I had know idea Olds inner fenders were all painted red. I figured if it wasn't black it would be the body color. I wonder is it all Oldsmobiles or just the Cutlass/442's
It was a special lightweight fender for these high performance packages.
Those aren't ashtrays on the seat backs, they are chrome buttons to release the seat back to go forward for people to get in the back sest
In my opinion the factory red paint on the fenders looks stupid af you do a great job on your videos bro 👏
Very nice, I have seen a 1:1 car before at a classic car show. I like the videos and keep up the great work!!!
I would love to see a video of putting those long side stripes on. I am building an '85 442 and it has similar stripes. I am a bit intimidated.
Got it :)
I always loved the look of these cars, and I think I'm going to buy this one eventually. I had that issue with the bent A pillar on the left hand side on both the 1969 AMT 4-4-2s I built - wonder if that's a problem on the real cars as well?? But as usual it looks great.
Would be nice if you explained some of your techniques...especially when you were painting the chrome rims...
Man this is a gorgeous model! What a great job you did! Hey what did you write on the backside of the passenger seat?
I noticed the driver side A pillar was bent Chris. Was that how it came??? Other then that awesome build!! Stay warm my friend 👍🏻
I talk about it in the video, even show how I bent it back as best I could.
My mistake Chris. Must've been bout the time I had to get up and let the dog outside.🤦 Had to watch the video again😊
I believe on the w-30 option cars, the red inner fenders were plastic, instead of metal. I don't know if it was all of them, or just the w-30.
Love watching your platform could you please print the colors you use instead of flashing the paint can . Thanks.
If you need more than 6 seconds to read the name you can always pause the video and write it down.
I only show paints as a courtesy, not as a 'you must use what I do and do things how I do' thing.
Thanks for watching!
Can I ask what glue you prefer to use? It seems to adhere very quickly.
Beautiful job again 👍 Where can I buy mod-podge at online ? And did you say you use future floor polish, on what ??
I'd google to see where both can be bought. I get my mod podge at craft stores, one bottle lasts many many years.
What kind of modge podge do you use for the glass
Looks great!
This looks like a really nice kit. I kinda want one now.
On another note, why do I feel like I'm listening to a bluegrass version of "Cum On Feel The Noize"? 🤔
I know you've been asked may times but I can't find anything. Ready? You have no problems with those spray paints??
What glue do you use? My glue is not doing the job vary well
What do you do with all the models that you build
is this the exact same kit of revelles Germany cram boxart one that was released b4 xmas i got that kit but i know this came out same time but boxart car color cream on it with black stripes
Hi Herman from Cape Town South Africa I have a quick Question what does what does Hpi Stand for ???
Do you possibly know where to get your hands on a 1/24 scale model by Monogram of the "Uncertain "T" "
Best bet is to search Scalemates and try to find the most recent reissue on Ebay, etc.
www.scalemates.com/kits/monogram-pc124-200-uncertain-t--1151321
@@hpiguy Hard to navigate really tells me here the last time kit was available was the 70,s???
Now, sorry, but other than probably cost, why do you use craft paint. Do you find it gives a better finish than using regular a Tamiya paint?
I'm a newbie. Excuse my ignorance, what kind of plastic cement are you using? Does it set as fast as shown? If anyone knows I appreciate the information. Thanks
I use Plastruct Bondene, it works quickly, yes.
Novus 2 will get rid of that glue boo boo....
Even now-a-day’s, the colour of the front fascia of many cars do not match 100% the body’s colour.
When is someone going to produce a legitimate well detailed 1970 442 in 1/24 1/25. Ive been waiting for years. Stop making 1971-2 and make some 1970s. Please please please!!!!!!
lmao... "your dad would smack you in the head"...!! Hahahahahaha
What have you written on the back of the passenger seat ??
I noticed that too, good question
Nothing at all. If you can you give me a time stamp on the video I'll look.
@@hpiguy i think the “writing” shows up around the 51:46 and 52:00 marks
Ah, ok, nope those are just paint being sprayed on the white thinly. No writing. Thanks!
