He's using Audix D series live drum mic's, they are truly like cheating.. I bet he hasn't even done much EQ to that kick, it's just naturally the way the D6 sounds.
if they were recording the whole set like they might in a studio, they could have bespoke mics for each drum - imo that's the secret for a god-tier drum mix, live OR studio
He doesn't just "play drums." He genuinely plays music on a drum kit. There is a difference. And it's extremely rare in this genre. Alex is truly an artist at his instrument.
@@stevensauls2013 I guess you might think it's awesome if you haven't seen some really awesome stuff like I have. On the plus side... thank you for spelling and using you're and your correctly.
Saw them live right after covid eased up with a group of friends. A guy in our group absolutely loves these these guys and the singer stage dove on our group. My buddy was out of his mind happy. The band really freaking killed.
A metal drummer that doesn't need double kick all of the time to "be a metal drummer." I've spoken to a friend a lot about him and it's interesting how Silent Planet is a metal band, but Alex isn't your typical metal drummer yet can still carry the music. Kind of makes me think of like Post Hardcore vs actual Metalcore.
Nic Pettersen from Northlane is another prime example of not using double kick all the time. He used a lot more in their old stuff but only when it called for it.
Liam Harlow hell yea man, i just had a clinic with the drummer of periphery and he mentioned that most of his stuff is just singles with the right foot, and he rarely has parts in periphery’s songs where its elongated double kick hits
I agree with your statement on his kick work. Another perfrct example is Wolves at the Gate's album Types and Shadows. No doubles used, but you barely notice.
Man oh man, Alex is on a whole nother level. Insane chops with the perfect amount of groove and heavy-ness! He always does precisely what the song requires.
Alex grooves so damn hard at 1:52, this guy is playing deep in the pocket. This is next level drumming for this genre, the only other drummer in the same league is Nic Peterson from Northlane. Those ghost notes and grooves he pays using the hi-hat, wild.
@Sweet Jones III I mean he's not wrong... that was a triplet.. but the skill lies in how he carried that fill over the bar and comes into the upbeat with it.
Sweet Jones III just saw your amazing reply when i revisited this video to get some motivation from Alex . If i am a “non drummer” I wouldn’t know thats a Hi-hat. And also i wouldn’t know that he used 5 stroke rolls which the sticking pattern is rr ll R in between beat 1 and 2 (in case you didn’t know) and the fifth stroke “R” accented on beat 2. Then followed by 8th note triplets ending on count 3 with the snare and right crash. Happy trying. Cheers (Took me about 3 secs to breakdown the lick)
Alex Camarena Dude loved everything about your drumming. Stylistically amazing. You inspire people like me to keep playing. Gonna get myself one of those hats and ride! Cheers brotha!
Just sat here for like 10 minutes trying to figure out what happened at 1:07 (I think it's just a 16th fill with the left hand alternating between the snare and open hi-hat but it's sick)
I don't think he's just alternating, but it is a linear pattern with the bass snare and toms. The hit hat just hits on a really cool accent. I get a ton of inspiration in my playing from Alex, and he uses similar fills in the stuff that I've sat there for HOURS and dissected. But by doing so, it's made me a better drummer. Currently working on a cover of Understanding Love as Loss, including the really fast interlude that I've yet to see covered in it's entirety. It's taken me months to figure out what he's doing there!
@@WoahitsMicah Ah...that makes a lot more sense now that you've said that. Guess it's easy to assume that it was only alternating. I'll be on the lookout for your cover man! That's one of my favorite songs by SP.
it is in fact somewhat of a linear fill that (i think, from watching at 0.25x speed) goes : crash snare snare snare crash/kick HH snare high-tom snare kick low-tom HH kick kick low-tom low-tom crash/kick crash/kick crash/kick crash/kick double-crash/kick

Or cheesecake. Pure cheesecake. Th
I literally can’t get enough of this dudes kit, drum sound, and groove. It’s such a perfect package.
Drum playing where Alex has demonstrated that every single note/stroke counts and has immense importance.
He doesn't just "play drums." He genuinely plays music on a drum kit. There is a difference. And it's extremely rare in this genre. Alex is truly an artist at his instrument.
Of course dude
Lmao
There's so much space in these fills. It sounds so huge and open. Makes the brain fuzzy.
Use of hi hat in that fill at 0:35 is sick
RIGHT???
Awesome? You need to watch more drummer videos dude.

This is the best live drum recording I have heard in a long time, well done
often they add samples after the initial recording... at the mix... would be surprise if theres none
Jimmy Perron no samples or editing. Just Chris Ghazel being drum mixing freak. :)
That drum sound is immense! I love that snare sound.
i love watching Alex drum
I'm a country drummer and he is one my favorite drummers. That use of space...damn!!
He has such a “flow state” of drumming.
My favorite drummer. The groove, the accuracy, the power...what a beast! 💪👍
I have watched this over a 100 times.. I cant get enough of this mix!
Thanks so much! We have a bunch of videos of him if you haven’t seen them all yet.

Alex, you are a great musician. Powerful, soulful, and locked in the pocket. It's so refreshing to see a drummer who doesn't overplay. Peace.
