Thank you, Blackmagic! There are still 2 things that need to be improved: stabilization and auto exposure.
Stabilization, it is a little bit funky, is not as good as the one found in the native app.
Auto exposure is still using spot metering, and it's too sensitive.
yesss stabilization is much worse than in the native app
Would really like to see Apple Watch monitor + Start/Stop recording. That would be so useful. DJI Osmo Mobile integration would be a nice to have. Remote monitoring to another device (iPhone or iPad especially) would also be a big help. Basically, more monitoring support.
Auto focus bracketing with speed control. Still using filmic for this feature. Select 2 focus POI and you can just tap to have it repeat this over and over as a very smooth transition.
I wish Blackmagic and other camera app developers would finally implement Cinematic Mode since Apple opened it up to developers at WWDC. Not one developer has implemented yet. It's the last reason I still use the stock app. Once that happens with BMC, no reason to use the stock app for video ever again.

AI is real-time (parallel-processing) when recording video and taking pictures so thats likely the reason why Cinematic Mode doesn’t support ProRes considering it’s nearly uncompressed data that’s heavier than compressed HDR 10-BIT. Sure, newer iPhones might can handle it at 24fps but not older ones. Otherwise, you are expecting RTX level parallel performance on a…phone.
@@randommiker I think you are missing what I am saying. Cinematic Mode was made available to developers to use in their camera apps. It has nothing to do with AI. BM can incorporate Cinematic Mode and allow us to edit and change focus in Resolve the same way we can with Final Cut Pro but they have to implement it first.
Protake camera app seems to be the only app that uses cinematic mode

The thing they should add is a priority mode exposure compensation when switching lenses mid-record. I want it to blip the ISO or maybe the shutter angle to match exposure between the three optics which have different fixed aperture values. Having to reset exposure when changing focal lengths runs counter to the versatility of a phone camera.
A number of posts mention the need for remote monitoring. I would like to add my vote for the ability to do remote monitoring either on an apple watch or iPad. Really really important for the kind of shooting that I do (lots of interviews with camera operator).
We need a remote control on another iOS device like Filmic Pro of Movie Pro!

Nice review! Would they integrate a focus transition? And zoom transition? And combinate both to get cool effects. This is possible with the current hardware. (It’s a feature in filmic pro)
I clearly lack smoothness when manually zooming in on an object. This feature is now implemented in the standard iPhone app. I would like to see such smoothness when zooming. But, let the possibility of sharp zoom remain, as it is now, for dynamic shooting. And with Slow-Mo, you want smoothness. This way you can make insanely creative shots like on a DSLR.
I really want to see them add separate reticule for exposure and focus
‘SELECT ALL’ when deleting media off the BM app via your iPhone rather than single selecting each say 30+ clips (which is semi painful each time).

I couldn’t manually choose an ISO below 64 before this update, but it could set to 55 with AE. Now I can select it.
Would love a flat profile for pre Apple log iPhones....like my 13Pro!

The amount of R&D Blackmagic would have to invest into an Android version of the app would likely be too costly since there are too many different Android options on the market (most manufacturers use different APIs/SDKs for camera functions). iPhone is different since its whole lineup supports the same APIs and frameworks. That means one version of the app will run on all iPhone models.
@@trainsandplanes8304 untrue. That's an old argument. Smaller companies do it. For example, I have Filmic Pro. Codes are easier to export to different platforms now and customization takes much less work.

The reason BM doesn't develop an app for Android is because there are already two apps that exist(i.e. MCpro24fps and motioncampro) and just for note what motioncampro can do not even iphone or BM for iphone can do that is shooting RAW DNG video.
Film mode would be awesome in Blackmagic app. iPhone native app with film mode is interesting but there is no option to record it with log and most important for external ssd. If Blackmagic listen it might be great tool.

Has anyone noticed the delay when recording using the image stabilization feature? Or just me.
Just noticed that the BM [Use Volume Button to Trigger Record] option WILL NOT TOGGLE OFF when using the BM camera, (but does toggle that function on/off when using the iPhone camera inhibiting the use of a bluetooth remote shutter release with the iPhone camera. Also would like to see a SSD holder similar to the one you offer for the caseless 15 max pro, that would fit on the back my Neewer PA023 handheld cage
Audio monitoring like filmic pro
I second that! Now, most of the time I have a good work around, using my iRig PreHD. But if I’m trying to use a minimal gear set-up, the inability to plug in some wired earbuds and listen to my audio as it is being recorded is a drawback.
How about allowing another iOS device to act as a remote for the main phone that records.
did they fix the monitoring via dac using external mics? in the previous update that wasnt working, while in other apps yes
Micheal high on my list of things for Blackmagic to do would be making it possible to use bluetooth AirPods for monitoring when you use an external microphone. I don't think you can do this at the moment but it would be great if you could. Have a good Christmas.

I would like to be able to change luts without entering the settings, from the recording screen. That would be helpful to save time and see a preview of the lut I want to use.

Hello. When you use the onelut while shooting with the phone, obviously you still need to color grade de video after in the editing software. How to use that onelut on that process?thanks
The AF feature has been around for several months, just lock the shutter speed and done.
I love the app, but I almost never use it because, for me, it lacks a major feature: auto ISO when you have locked shutter speed and locked fps. I do a lot of vlogging outside and having auto ISO (like I have in my Sony A7IV) solves all the problems of moving from one place with brighter ligtis to a place with lower light. Until this feature comes to the app, I'm not able to use it.
What would be the point of adding vlogger features to a pro app? Just use your normal camera app for that!

2. Allow me to rotate my phone clockwise. The controls are all upside down when I try this now
I’d like to see better meta data management, with hashtags , keywords, automatic AI tagging to make the derush easier. Also custom composition grid to keep consistency over shots , be able to use another iphone or ipad as a monitor
Love the Blackmagic camera app. Would love to see focus peaking added. It’s sometimes hard to focus the image precisely and quickly due to it being hard to see the screen in some lighting situations.
Already in there! The tools surrounding the record button look at the bottom most right (holding phone vertically) and then choose the second from the right icon (person inside of box) and turn that on. That’s your focus peaking 👍🏼

Save Media to Photo Library Only. I don't need clips in two places and, for what it's worth, I'm using FCP not Resolve. I use the organizing tools in Photos as well.
I cant get my files to save to my phone "photos" it only saves into dv folder. Even tho i have it set to in-phone save clips

I would like them to fix false color. Currently, it’s missing the blue and purple tones for under exposed areas. It only displays gray pink green. And under exposed it displays green. Last over exposed is way off. I have red parts still fully exposed and visible when switched off.
Is it possible to take photos on Blackmagic camera or only videos ?
Can it be used to take photos, because while downloading from the apps store its mentions ''photo and video''??

This may have been answered but I bought a Samsung T7 SSD and did some 4K 60fps Pro Res recording from the 15 Pro direct...but using the native camera app where the usb connection is clearly linked to the pro res option. I cannot see how to record out direct to an SSD via the BlackMagic app in other formats, say H.264 HD. Is the direct to SSD record option somehow only an option for the log and 4k Pro Res?

What I miss most is the 2x mode of the main sensor - best available in the lens selection. Is there perhaps a technical reason why Black Magic can't access it?
The lack of 2x mode is in my view the biggest weakness of the otherwise excellent Black Magic camera app, as it acts like another sensor, albeit a much smaller one.
2x mode is just 1x lens sensor digitally zoomed in before processing.
In BM camera app they separated real physical (0,5x; 1x and 5x) lenses from digital "fake" lenses (1,2x;1,5x;2x). Just press magnifier icon and then you can set not only 2x, but 4x, 8x as well as all incrementals up to 15x (idk who ever will need this). So I think you can freely reproduce 2x digital lens using this feature in BM app. And this also work with two other physical lenses as well, which is not possible in the native camera app
@@tomibeg No, its not digital zoomed in - 2x mode has a 12 MP sensor readout of a cropped portion of unbinned 48 MP main sensor - 1x mode has also a 12 MP sensor readout because of a 2x2 binnig of the main sensor.
@@uldmedia Thanks for clarification. Looks like this is similar to "Super 35 Mode" in Sony cameras with large MP sensors. I hope BM will add this 12 MP readout feature too (in case if this is not locked by Apple). Apologize for misleading advice.

Different lenses have different min ISO. Have a look at 0.5x or 3x
Can somebody explain to me why every time I film something on my phone in the black Magic app? It comes out as a photo. Or less than a second video?
Can you move AF reticle and AE reticle separately?
are the results different if you use the burn in option? I tried burning in; the oneLut but it looked terrible, are you supposed to use the apple conversion lut first??
Gotta make sure your Color Space Tag is set to Rec 709 if you're burning in the LUT otherwise the phone will play it back with funky/wrong colors. Hope that fixes for you. 👍🏻
prolost has a free conversion lut(s) that are superior imo...
I still just want a waveform in addition to the histogram. I'm still shocked it wasn't a day 1 inclusion.

Has anyone noticed that even though everything is in manual mode, when panning from a bright, well-lit scene to an underlit location, the brightness of the iPhone 14 Pro changes? I use the CinemaP3 app and have also tested the Blackmagic app and both have the same problem: the phone tries not to underexpose the image, even though sometimes I intentionally want it to.
Yes unfortunately that is called Tone Mapping. It’s a “feature” Apple came out with that for the stock camera app in auto is fine but many Pro’s were very pissed because tone mapping happens on a level that 3rd party apps like filmic, P3 or Blackmagic cannot override it happening. So it’s not their fault.
Currently the ONLY way to get passed tone mapping is with Apple LOG on the iPhone 15 Pro. In that pro mode, Apple disabled tone mapping. Hope that helps at least explain it.
@@initialfocus Thank you, at least now I realize that it´s not my fault. So, next Year I have to invest in the new one. In P3 there is Local and Global Tone Mapping but I can´t distinguish the difference in its performance. Finally, I would like to thank you for your enlightening answer
It's a nice app but I have since moved on from it as the Moment app gives better video quality. You can adjust bitrate in the settings and with the demo videos I have tested, I can see the difference over black magics app. Also, I can create profiles with all my settings, iso, shutter, framerate baked in and for each of the different lenses, 0.5X, 1X, and 5X so I can quickly open the app and tap what I want and good to go in seconds.
Interesting? As far as I’m concerned ProRes on the phones all have the same bitrate. The high bitrate settings are only for when using HEVC modes. But I’ll chat with moment and see if I’m wrong and do some testing! But I do love

I run this app on my 12 pro but I had iso 33 and 40 that’s before i updated yesterday
I'm hoping BM keeps listening. Issues still in the app:
- UI colors are affected by custom LUTs (including Peaking and False Color)
- Histogram Color Clipping indicators don’t work
- And oddly... Shutter speeds close to 360 degrees cause significant drop in dynamic range
Excellent advice on setting up separate focus and exposure, as well as in general for analyzing each new update item. Do this in every update. I would like to see the SHUTTER drop to 12 ⏪ This way you can make insanely creative shots like on a DSLR. Promote this topic in Blackmagic⬅
Hi. I’m using an iPhone 14 Pro and the Blackmagic app only allows me to go up to 30fps.
Is there a Native ISO for apple log? The iso for the best DR and noise?

I’d like support for 240fps. I shoot about half my content in slow motion. 240fps is a must for me.
Thanks for the update. I'm curious on your thoughts on the Nucleus Wireless Lens Control within the Blackmagic app. I was surprised to see it and, would like to see it in use. Blackmagic is surely making a big splash in the mobile film world and, their commitment stands out. I'm excited about mobile again after Blackmagic entered the scene and iPhone finally added usb-c. 👍📱🎞

Able to use with a gimbal
I shot with the app on the iPhone 15 pro max this and I was kinda impressed. The AE was pretty annoying and ruined a few good shots, but I was still able to produce something that the client was really happy with. I originally wasn't going to use the footage since it was more for testing, but the final product was pretty decent. Everyone was pretty surprised that I shot it with my phone. My biggest problem with the Blackmagic app is the latency for the cinematic IBIS. It is really bad! I mean like 3-4 seconds bad. Can I get used to it? Yeah, but it takes a while to get to used to such a big latency window. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm not sure if Apple's camera app has this issue. It didn't seem like it when I tested it but I'll double-check to be certain.
Also, the audio is not synced 1:1 with the video. Sure we can fix it in post, but this is just another nit pick.

For anyone that doesn't have an iPhone 15 pro with apple log. It would be sweet if Blackmagic had a Log2/3 LUT or mode that you could throw on.

SmallRig remote does not actuate the camera in BM app
120mm has 34 and 13mm has 32 ISO’s. These are the same as before I think.

In Settings > Camera you can select “Lock Current Orientation” and it will stay horizontal

Honestly I can imagine it will make its way to android for sure. My guess is next year. It’s only 3 months old and it would make sense they want it to be super stable and optimized for iPhone and Apple LOG. Maybe they have an agreement with Apple for a certain time to remain iOS only. But Blackmagic has multiple software for all types of platforms, Mac, PC etc so idk it’s just a guess but I think it’ll come eventually

You are excellent, but why do you all downgrade to Rec.709 when iPads, Apple MacBooks and iPhones can display and edit in HDR and even UA-cam can deliver content based on HDR or SDR depending on the users device they're watching it on. We hear so much from content creators about producing the very best yet everything is still being done in SDR. My warm suggestion is to try it and see what you think. I'll go even further, shoot in HLG and see how you feel once you get your head around that. I think it would make a brilliant video, and as I said at the beginning, you are brilliant so I'd like to see what you do with this concept for a video.

Some people paint with mops and make millions doing it. I wouldn’t call any tool meant for creativity stupid. Might not be the most practical for most but believe it or not there are some who find genuine use for it 🤷🏻♂️

Blackmagic isn’t everyone’s favorite regardless of the UA-cam brainwashing. I am a cinema P3 fan all the way. It’s being amazing

@@initialfocuscinema P3 has an obscene amount of functionality that I’ve not seen in any other app (and I’ve tested a bunch), yet if I do a search on UA-cam, the results are flooded with filmicPro and black magic and when I listen to the pros and cons of each app, cinema P3 has been doing it plus a lot more for a while, yet the UA-cam algorithm doesn’t reflect that so I have no choice but to come to the conclusion that there’s a UA-cam brainwashing in effect. I’m not saying that’s your agenda but the algorithm sure knows what to type of videos to play on repeat. If I were a developer working on cinema p3, I’d be suspicious. Again, I’m not accusing you personally of trying to brainwash anyone.
