The thing I like about the first Dragon Ball series is how it makes you feel things. The deaths hit harder, Goku meeting his Grandpa was emotional, and it makes you laugh hard too. I also think it's a little tighter narratively. The moment Goku uses the Nyoibo to reach Kami really feels like everything had been leading up to that point and tied everything together.
I just look back more fondly on the og I didn't watch kai so I don't like the pacing but I don't like that kai has a different dub to Z so I'd rather the crap pacing over the different voices that's also why I didn't watch super because Bulmas en va is different.
Lunch's jokes were my favorite, in the Mystical Adventure movie she mumbles around the plane crew about not being able to hold herself from hijacking the plane XD
The people who say Goku has no development have not watched OG Dragon ball. This show is a reason I love characters like, Bulma, Yamcha and Piccolo espicially. And even Launch and Tao Pai Pai hell theyre in my top 5 theyre so uniuqe and memorable
Goku has great development even if you ignore OG DB and just focus on Z, but I agree that you miss a huge chunk of it by just watching or reading the Z portion of the story.

OG dragon ball is the BEST part of the entire series. Why don’t people know this already?! I’ve known that for at least 20 years. It disappoints me so much that so-called “fans” straight up REFUSE to watch OG dragon ball. It’s like they’re not even aware how stupid it sounds to not watch the best part of a series. Without watching OG dragon ball, you don’t know the real story. Plain and simple. Just watch it and stop crying about how vegeta isn’t in it.
Og dragonball is no doubt my favorite portion of the series. It’s high stakes enough to have tense fights, but low stakes enough for every character to be funny.
I love Dragonball and Dragonball Z, but I really don't care for Super, GT or anything else they have created lately. Toriyama didn't necessarily want to extend the story after Z. It was meant to be over after Buu, but I heard that he was pressured to continue. I prefer to watch the OG series because they were pure Toriyama and not just additional 'content.' No hate on people who like Super etc, but I have never understood 'why' people are crazy about it when its far inferior to the OG series.

I just can’t understand how people can love Z, without ever seining or reading OG Dragon Ball. It’s literally the beginning of the story. And there’s so much context and background that you miss if you skip it. Like how literally all of Goku’s friends were his enemies or rivals. I mean, even Krillin started out as a rival to Goku. I think that’s pretty important context for how he behaves as an adult, how he “lets the bad go” because that’s what he’s been doing since childhood, and made some pretty amazing friendships because of it.

Not crazy at all. Sadly the lack of promotion for OG dragon ball has caused people to look at it that way. You wouldn't see people say not to watch Naruto and just watch shippuden, but it's come to this point sadly
It's also nice seeing how Toriyama's art have evolved over time throughout the franchise as well. OG Dragonball is a genuinely good show despite it's age. One of the best retro animes I'll say.
I wouldn't say it's "fine to start" at Z. That's like starting at The Two Towers instead of Fellowship of the Ring. It's always been bizarre to me how people separate Dragon Ball and Z into two separate things, cause they're not. Dragon Ball and Z are ONE SERIES, which is Dragon Ball. The only reason there is a "Z" is because the anime decided to change the name at the 7th Saga. You CAN start at the Saiyan Saga, but that's essentially the same as starting at Red Ribbon or Cell. It's just picking random parts to start at. Dragon Ball has comedy, action, and adventure all throughout it, just to different degrees at different parts. It starts to get more tense as early as Red Ribbon and just keeps escalating as it goes on.

Dragon ball has become a "how good are the fights" type series to lots of people. I said the same thing in another comment to someone. You wouldn't start with naruto shippuden over naruto but that's really based on how they were shown in the west.
I have never really been too big into DBZ personally. But I love the original Dragonball. As you said in the video, its more of an adventure. And the humour is great.

I read through all of dragon Ball in like two weeks a while ago because i had to do a lot of commuting by train, and i honestly like all of the parts pretty equally. The only parts i didn't enjoy were the moro arc and the recap of superhero that's basically just a manga recap of the movie but with more filler for some reason. Black frieza was cool though
OG DB had amazing fight choreography what you talking about? It had great jokes too. The good ol' days when it wasn a light show or check out my new hair dye or body paint show.

Original Dragon Ball is the best Dragon Ball. Nothing could beat the pacing of it, it's incredible. The way the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai went into the Piccolo Daimao arc. However, and this is big: I think everyone NEEDS to watch it JP subbed because the dub is very inaccurate to the manga and it's WAY funnier. Like no contest. Lots more awesome Japanese music in JP subbed too
I definitely can see why you'd watch it subbed. I personally watched it as a kid(I've read the manga now) so I had no concept of watching something in Japanese. But they definitely do make some weird changes namely Oolong sounding and acting like a 40 year old middle aged man. But for me I'm more nostalgic for the English dub so that's why I watch that one personally. But yeah the Japanese version is definitely more accurate.

DBZ Android/Cell Saga I do because 2000 was a banging year. So many awesome games coming out, a console that could play the new media for watching movies was about to come out. It was a good year. Dragon Ball started airing not long before 9/11, and I was personally affected by it. I believe this is lowkey a reason DBZ stopped after November 2001 for a year. The other sagas just wrapped up until the end of that year pretty much, bar Namek because the new dub didn't start until Goku arrived on Namek. The Buu Saga was full of cities and tall buildings and destruction, and one particular episode with the building on fire, that one ended up getting banned. I'm sure the Android/Cell Saga if it had aired in 2001 would've also been banned considering destroying cities is what No. 17 and 18 loved to do in the Trunks timeline variations. I don't like the Buu Saga to begin with, it's terrible, so I wouldn't have felt anywhere near as nostalgic as I did in the Cell Saga. The entire series was good enough to end right there, and it should've. I recall the filler episodes of Goku training in otherworld started just a day before 9/11, so a little while before the Buu Saga happened. You saw the most damage done to cities the following year when it re-aired in the autumn of 2002, so I want to say Cartoon Network and Toonami had a feeling it wouldn't be a good idea to release some of the following episodes without reducing the quality of them to some extent, so ending on Vegeta's sacrifice seemed like it made sense to end on to any kid watching. Parents also may have made phone calls to Toonami, knowing of DBZ and its frequent depiction of cities getting destroyed or vaporized and told them to delay showing any more episodes. Majin Vegeta and his blowing up a whole stadium and its surrounding buildings was definitely a huge red flag considering that's like a month later. There were a *lot* of kids personally affected by 9/11 either by loss of family members or just were completely traumatized. I can't even think of the year 2001 without instantly thinking of it.
As a Latino, where pretty much everyone grew up with both the OG and Z in latin america, I legit feel bad for people in the USA who didnt grew up with how the series is suppose to be watch

I apparently watched Z as a kid, though I don't remember it. In high school, I watched the original first and then Z. I still loved both, but I look back more fondly on the original because I like the comedy more. To me, it's more about the characters and story than it is about his origin, u know?
@jackster10101 definitely, I kept saying origin because that's literally what it is for dbz. But I enjoy the story and comedy more than most of dbz and super. The story, while not as action-packed and not as high of stakes i still find more enjoyable due to the characters and the general slice of life feel it has(I loved the gohan high school stuff the most in buu saga) I just like the characters interacting so casually.

I’ve only ever watched DBZ and I’m almost done with Dragon Ball Super - I’m finally on the Tournament of Power saga. I’ve seen some of GT some years ago but I was kind of bored. Anyway, YES I’ll watch Dragon Ball soon because I can’t call myself a fan if I never watched it! 😅 Oh, I always loved Piccolo, he’s just calm/cool and sexy to me lol
You should for sure watch it but you're definitely still a fan even if you haven't watched it! I just wish people liked the OG version like I do or at least watched/read it. Also I'm glad we're in agreement I could GLAZE piccolo all day lol
I’ve been telling people for decades that original series is the best. There are hype moments in Z that peak higher the OG, but the overall story is better in OG. It’s more connected. It’s more adventure. And fights are won more on skill than power levels. Plus it’s funny
DB > Z > GT > Super I dont know, i see it kinda like SW. The prequels are okay, lots to like, but the original is just objectively better. Its why they made prequels at all. DB is just objectively better than Z, writing, character development, action, hell even music. Z is cooler, but not better. And how could it be?
I still love the OG DB. Akira is more of a comedy creator along with a creator for mechs, monsters n such. Alot of folks don't notice akira toriyama worked on so many many many media in his life. Yo I ain't just a DB fan but im an Akira fan, I still miss this legend

Don't get me wrong I don't hate the original voices I just prefer kai's(Especially Frieza I think he is far better in kai). I still respect what the originals did though. As I have watched the original dub before.

The manga never had a split between DB and DBZ, it was just one big story... When i was a kid, the series wasn't even dubbed (or available in my country), so to me, it was just the manga and it was one big continuity. I feel like everyone who started with Z really missed out on a lot of build up and payoff.
I was so disappointed that db sparking zero had only kid Goku and jackie chun with desert yamcha outfits as og dragon ball content it needs more love and i loved og more than z because i started with the red ribbon arc on tv back in the days i literally started the series with og

Actually no one never thinks of this but Akira Toyama original manga was dragon all the way through from the adventure started to uub I think of the show like that so you could say dragon Ball and dragon Ball z is one show if you don't think of it like that it's ok

I watch them both in that order because it makes more sense because of the story I know no one would do this but before watching Dragonball I watch Bardock movie first to be a set up to what's to come
I stopped watching after the Buu saga back in 03 or whenever it first aired on CN. Even that arch didn’t click with me. I think the whole fusion stuff started to over complicate things. We had a hand full of super saiyans and already up to 3rd level. It felt like it was setting up the trend that came with constant need/want to have a new flashy aura. Perfect world, the Z fighter stories would have ended with Gohan beating Cell. He still surpasses Goku. Trunks wasn’t a SS and was Gohans son from the future, Goku died after beating Freiza, but we still follow him in the afterlife and helps Gohan. Vegeta never becomes SS but has his redemption when he sacrifices himself against Cells 2nd form…. Sorry not the place for fan fiction 😅 But yes! After the Freiza/Namek saga, it really became about one up man ship IMO. But like I said, I never watched GT or Super or anything I between or after. I am going to follow Daima tho.
honestly i think og dragon ball is a just more enjoyable to watch i have rewatched it in full a few times but when i comes to Z yeah i have rewatched fights and some arcs but but have not rewatched it from start to finish only seen all of Z once but dragon ball i think i have watched at least 3 to 4 times in full
I fuckin love of dragon ball and still think in terms of pure writing quality it outdoes z and certainly super Kinda like how og naruto is better written than shippuden but shippuden has more hype moments and climaxes. Like sure the highs of shippuden are higher but part 1 doesn’t have a bad arc while shippuden has plenty of underwhelming arcs
I don't think anyone would be mad at you for having such a sentimental reason to watch(it's not like dragon ball is the only anime you can watch). I think it sounds like a fire idea. This video is really only for the people who believe they don't need to watch dragon ball.

Starting with Z is absolute madness. It's volume 16 of the manga. It's the middle of the story. You wouldn't start Naruto with Shippuden. You wouldn't start One Piece after the timeskip. Why would you start with Z? The series is just not as good if it's not experienced completely.
Dragon Ball (apart from some great Martial Arts scenes) is basically Bulma (an underaged girl) engaging in sexualised behaviour, or being molested by almost every other character in the show. That part really irks me from watching what is otherwise a pretty great show on Martial Arts and pretty accurate combat sports.

Their was no comedy in z because people were actually dying and the entie world was at risk that's why and in goku is just barely seeing the world and knew people and learning and naive in super things have died down she goku acts like a dummy now its not the same as a 13yr old goku not knowing what ticket's are
Dont get me wrong, I know why Z had less comedy. I mention it during the video that much of the reason for the comedy is because there's no world threats. Until Piccolo it's more of goku just solving regional problems,training for the tournament, and generally just enjoying life. But yeah, goku definitely acts more ignorant of things in super, I definitely prefer z goku over Super, but I'm just not surprised it happened because of how toriyama wrote

You saw the most damage done to cities the following year when it re-aired in the autumn of 2002, so I want to say Cartoon Network and Toonami had a feeling it wouldn't be a good idea to release some of the following episodes without reducing the quality of them to some extent, so ending on Vegeta's sacrifice seemed like it made sense to end on to any kid watching.
Parents also may have made phone calls to Toonami, knowing of DBZ and its frequent depiction of cities getting destroyed or vaporized and told them to delay showing any more episodes. Majin Vegeta and his blowing up a whole stadium and its surrounding buildings was definitely a huge red flag considering that's like a month later.
There were a *lot* of kids personally affected by 9/11 either by loss of family members or just were completely traumatized. I can't even think of the year 2001 without instantly thinking of it.
As a Latino, where pretty much everyone grew up with both the OG and Z in latin america, I legit feel bad for people in the USA who didnt grew up with how the series is suppose to be watch

I apparently watched Z as a kid, though I don't remember it. In high school, I watched the original first and then Z. I still loved both, but I look back more fondly on the original because I like the comedy more. To me, it's more about the characters and story than it is about his origin, u know?
@jackster10101 definitely, I kept saying origin because that's literally what it is for dbz. But I enjoy the story and comedy more than most of dbz and super. The story, while not as action-packed and not as high of stakes i still find more enjoyable due to the characters and the general slice of life feel it has(I loved the gohan high school stuff the most in buu saga) I just like the characters interacting so casually.

plus I didn't watch super because Burma's en va was different so I dropped it on ep 1 lol
Yeah they pretty much sidelined most people who "can't" fight. It's a shame but that's why I enjoy these two series for different reasons.

I’ve been telling people for decades that original series is the best. There are hype moments in Z that peak higher the OG, but the overall story is better in OG. It’s more connected. It’s more adventure. And fights are won more on skill than power levels. Plus it’s funny

When i was a kid, the series wasn't even dubbed (or available in my country), so to me, it was just the manga and it was one big continuity. I feel like everyone who started with Z really missed out on a lot of build up and payoff.

I stopped watching after the Buu saga back in 03 or whenever it first aired on CN. Even that arch didn’t click with me. I think the whole fusion stuff started to over complicate things. We had a hand full of super saiyans and already up to 3rd level. It felt like it was setting up the trend that came with constant need/want to have a new flashy aura. Perfect world, the Z fighter stories would have ended with Gohan beating Cell. He still surpasses Goku. Trunks wasn’t a SS and was Gohans son from the future, Goku died after beating Freiza, but we still follow him in the afterlife and helps Gohan. Vegeta never becomes SS but has his redemption when he sacrifices himself against Cells 2nd form…. Sorry not the place for fan fiction 😅
But yes! After the Freiza/Namek saga, it really became about one up man ship IMO. But like I said, I never watched GT or Super or anything I between or after. I am going to follow Daima tho.

Starting with Z is absolute madness. It's volume 16 of the manga. It's the middle of the story. You wouldn't start Naruto with Shippuden. You wouldn't start One Piece after the timeskip. Why would you start with Z? The series is just not as good if it's not experienced completely.
Dragon Ball (apart from some great Martial Arts scenes) is basically Bulma (an underaged girl) engaging in sexualised behaviour, or being molested by almost every other character in the show.
That part really irks me from watching what is otherwise a pretty great show on Martial Arts and pretty accurate combat sports.
If you don't like OG dragonball your opinions is null and void.

Their was no comedy in z because people were actually dying and the entie world was at risk that's why and in goku is just barely seeing the world and knew people and learning and naive in super things have died down she goku acts like a dummy now its not the same as a 13yr old goku not knowing what ticket's are
Dont get me wrong, I know why Z had less comedy. I mention it during the video that much of the reason for the comedy is because there's no world threats. Until Piccolo it's more of goku just solving regional problems,training for the tournament, and generally just enjoying life.
But yeah, goku definitely acts more ignorant of things in super, I definitely prefer z goku over Super, but I'm just not surprised it happened because of how toriyama wrote
