With all of this discussion about new makes and it being the the foundation that the whiskey is built on, It really start to make me want to try the new makes from some of the Islay distilleries. Imagine how aggressive Laphroaig or Ardbeg may be as new makes.
I "aged" 1 Liter of this stuff in my oak barrel at home in Southern Cali for 4 months, It's way toned down, but still potent and aggressive. Everything I've put in the barrel since still tastes like this stuff.
My father's cure for a cough or a cold was whisky and honey, and the honey was always optional. He was a big Kessler's fan. He started giving me teaspoon doses when I was around 3.
I make cough medicine, i think they call a "gold rush" now. Whiskey, lemon juice, and honey. I give it to my kids in small doses to ease the throat and help them sleep.
@@Questionable_Talent My grandparents used to make this for me as a kid. I couldn't stomach over the counter stuff. Always tossed it right back up. A spoon or two of this and I was good to go. The family doc back then (late 60's early 70's) swore by it as well.
This has been great so far. I love stories about making and processes. The cooking enthusiast in me, I guess. BUT it is still weird to be seeing you guys drink a clear whiskey. Just, makes me do a double take each time. LOL.
When Rex-year starts you Rex can give Daniel a real challenge to pair the moonshine and the aged same whiskey for a number (a MAGNIFICENT number) of different whisk(e)ys! Looking forward to seeing Daniel really putting his Somm-knowldge to the test! Great video guys, as always! Love from Sweden
Hey MBs I'm wondering if you've got something exciting prepared for St Patrick's... It's a Sunday so I figured it would either come on Friday or Monday... Don't let me down 😁
I recently tried Buffalo Trace bourbon and really enjoyed it and now I have a bottle of Wigle bourbon waiting to be sampled on my next night off. Great review it's always cool to see something new.
I think this new make is among my favorite whiskeys! An old traditional mix drink of mtn dew and "white whiskey" using this example is ODD and incredible. Neat its incredible, proofing it down its incredible. I have found my home.
I have had the George Dickel New make it to me it taste just like ground corn is what I remember. How much corn flavor is in the buffalo trace new make?
I've always wondered, I know the whiskey vault is organized by classification but what do you do with whiskeys that are two things? Canadian/Rye or Rye/Bourbon blends etc? Cheers gents!
It’s funny because when I visited Maker’s Mark, I liked the white dog but still don’t like what it becomes, the regular bourbon. So the distilleries saying “if you don’t like the new make, you won’t like the whiskey” might not be true for everyone. (I still visited the distillery because I was in Kentucky, why not)
What in the actual f#@&!!!! That's the most amazing room EVER!!!! Dreams are answered, just not in my home... Someone put the result in a tower in another state... Damn dreams!
Hey guys, recently bought a bottle of Deanston 12 and while I do think it's quality, and appreciate it, it's not really my taste. I've been trying to give it some heft and I found a blend I really liked. You guys should try it. 90% Deanston 12, 10% Ardbeg Uigdeail.
Dickel new make in sundrop is what sundrop is actually supposed to taste like. I couldn't imagine drinking new make strait up. I don't like Tennessee whiskey though, and prefer bourbon on rocks. Also I am from Tennessee, it is a shame I can't find one I like.
Do is see a finlaggan in the back to the left? What about a comparson to finlaggan, like a "guess what it is" challange finlaggan cask strenght, old reserve and so on... I guess its lagavulin but what about you????
Have CS Finlaggan side by side with Lagavulin 8 and to me, they are very different. Ageing and casks makes difference I know, but the peat type seems different. To me closer to Ardbeg 10. Hard to tell.
I've heard this is like one of the 10 things you must try before you die. I just received my bottle of white dog today, been calling around to find the bourbon. Here in the area of Pa I live in it's not easy to find Buffalo Trace Bourbon. Keep being told call back next week we might get a shipment in then. I have to do a side by side taste test. Opened the white dog and had 1/2 a pour just to try, harsh at first but second sip little better.
If you ever make it down to Buffalo Trace, schedule the "Hard Hat Tour". You will have to sign up way in advance, but it is totally worth it to see all of the behind the scenes stuff (and you get to drink the new make coming of the top of the column still at the end of the tour!!!).
Check out Old Nick Williams Distillery. If not for prohibition they would have been the longest running distillery. They have an amazing story to go along with their product. They where established 1768!
I know I said I would be less seen at this time of year, BUT... Daniel, Daniel, Daniel.... Leave the crass comments to The Mooch in retraining, please. What you do in private and laughing at Rex is all good and well; BUT, you are the Somm! Loving the history, cursory though it may me. :D
I been away for awhile But I’m glad I got back in time for #danielmonth. Also commenting as I’m watching this episode but dude where’s the AB comparison from white dog to actual buffalo?
Sounds like a smooth wiskey..need to try it.. I have Clan MacGregor in one glass, and Evan Williams in another and Canadian Club 1858 in the 3rd glass and is a great experience of different flavors and smells and they are great budget wiskeys and a burbons..
I actually have a physical doctor's prescription for whiskey that was actually written during Prohibition. The prescription pads were apparently issued by the Federal Government and appear to be produced in a similar method as money, because the level of quality of the engraving and printing makes it look like a savings bond! I guess they were "trying" to prevent/limit forgeries and counterfeits.
I so want to try this. can't hardly find their products now anywhere. Even had a guy working at a liquor store say he thinks the distillery had gone to withholding the products back to amp up supply and demand.
Today I tried Buffalo Trace White Dog Wheated Mash. I like moonahine, and this White Dog definitely tastes familiar. 😊 nice corn flavour. Also, I can taste some "wheaty" notes, reminds me of a (good quality) vodka, like grey goose. Oddly pleasant. 😁 I bet this would make an awesome apple pie, but I kinda dont wanna make an apple pie out of something "premium" like this (I usually use Firefly white lightning for my apple pies, which is absolutely decent quality, but also still a reasonable price).
So I just went on the tour there and the white dog mash #1 is Buffalo trace. Starts off as mash #1 goes in barrel come out Buffalo trace. Ages longer and comes out eagle rare. It's all the same mash build. And when you smell mash #1 it smells just like buttered popcorn!
Daniel has said that he often starts the evening with a whiskey of note, and then transitions to something more common for a sipper. My question is, after the hero whiskey do you try for a similar flavor or type, a counterpoint, or do you just drag out that bottle of Southern Comfort someone left at the house to try and get rid of it?
With all of the history lessons (which I love, I'm learning everything I can about whisk(e)y) I think you should do a show about different Irish whiskeys.
I feel a growing disturbance in the vault. The moochiness is building. P.S. Not strong enough yet Rex, you missed a chance to compare both the Buffalo trace and Dickle finished products to the new make
Wondering if you guys have ever made a video on the rules and traditions about and surrounding toasts and cheers. I've heard a lot of "rules" like that it's bad form not to drink or not to make eye contact when clinking glasses. What are your toast preferences?
went out and picked up a bottle of this the other day because i liked everything you said about it. It was the worst tasting thing i've had in a long time. My palate must be trash becuase this provoked my gag reflex. :( I actually went and remade a negroni just to see if it beat my "worst tasting drink" and it did so much it actually made the negroni drinkable.
Hey I heard from a friend that Jim Beam Black is very necessary to a supple complexion! Or maybe a, well, feel good vault!!!! I need just 5 minutes in the whiskey vault! PLEASE! Just 5 minutes in the whiskey vault! Come on you fellow Texan tribe GIVE ME A COMPARISON OF Jim Beam against Jack Daniels old no.7
Where's my bottle down ceremony? You deliberately finished that bottle. But, no men were raining. Daniel month is over and we finish the month with the somms.
One day you own a whisk(e)y vault, the next thing you know you're drinking moonshine haha! Have you guys checked out any of the recent Forty Creek products? they've got a great lineup including: Unity, Copper Pot Still (personal favourite), Confederation Oak, Double Barrel, and Spike Honey Spiced (which honestly makes the jack daniels honey look amateurish, no offence to jack daniels)!
This one was weird. Just tried it last night and was essentially convinced it was actually white wine...smell, taste, and even so light...it seemed like a riesling or something.
I used to have to special order the buffalo trace rye mash. Last year I was told that they discontinued the buffalo trace line. Anyone know where to get it at if it's still being made?
The Spirit Monk[e]y appreciates your comments.
I feel like we are owed an empty bottle ceremony for that first bottle guys. No bottle may truly rest until men hath rained.
this has been an ongoing issue i have had with them.
I LOVE White Dog from Buffalo Trace. !!!
The theme of this month has been awesome! I love history!
With all of this discussion about new makes and it being the the foundation that the whiskey is built on, It really start to make me want to try the new makes from some of the Islay distilleries. Imagine how aggressive Laphroaig or Ardbeg may be as new makes.
The Spirit Monk[e]y very much concurs.
Now we all await for the Spirit Monk(e)y to show up 👀
The Spirit Monk[e]y arrives precisely when he means to.
I "aged" 1 Liter of this stuff in my oak barrel at home in Southern Cali for 4 months, It's way toned down, but still potent and aggressive. Everything I've put in the barrel since still tastes like this stuff.
The Spirit Monk[e]y is legitimate.

Even during Daniel month...we get a Dickel joke. 👍
AndrewBGood if I didn't know better the first time sounded like "smell the nose on the dickhole" really threw me off lmao
The history and tracking has been awesome so far, Daniel month is amazing. Thanks for being such a whisk(e)y sage Daniel!!!
i am so happy there was a new make on this month, its a whole new beast and i love that you showed some appreciation!!
This has been great so far. I love stories about making and processes. The cooking enthusiast in me, I guess. BUT it is still weird to be seeing you guys drink a clear whiskey. Just, makes me do a double take each time. LOL.
Vault within the vault: vaultception
The Spirit Monk[e]y is present at 7:55 .
Get over yourself.

This reaction 4:56 tells me Rex is not as big a fan as he's leading on
So glad yall tried this. I've been too scared to put this in my system
Missing the slo-mo pour shots...
Daniel for president. Make America magnificent again. Rex, you’d be a good Vice President too.

Do you guys plan on doing a video on the Double Eagle Very Rare 20 year Bourbon from Buffalo Trace?
I've always wondered, I know the whiskey vault is organized by classification but what do you do with whiskeys that are two things? Canadian/Rye or Rye/Bourbon blends etc? Cheers gents!
World class mooch techniques. Impressive
Love the video but I wonder do scotch distilleries also sell new make. I never saw any but a islay new make sounds interesting
So buttery on the nose and the palette....I prefer this to the barrel aged...more distillery’s need to do this
It’s funny because when I visited Maker’s Mark, I liked the white dog but still don’t like what it becomes, the regular bourbon. So the distilleries saying “if you don’t like the new make, you won’t like the whiskey” might not be true for everyone. (I still visited the distillery because I was in Kentucky, why not)
Love you guys... sometimes you even talk about whisk(e)y!
Weeping. I see my current unicorn back there the Red Spot. You lucky Magnificent Bastards, excited to see your review on it.
What in the actual f#@&!!!! That's the most amazing room EVER!!!! Dreams are answered, just not in my home... Someone put the result in a tower in another state... Damn dreams!

So has anyone bought a bottle of new make a age it themselves? I feel inspired to do so. For science....
Dickel new make in sundrop is what sundrop is actually supposed to taste like. I couldn't imagine drinking new make strait up. I don't like Tennessee whiskey though, and prefer bourbon on rocks. Also I am from Tennessee, it is a shame I can't find one I like.
Not even Pritchard's?

this history is so good!!
i got mash 1 to compare with Buffalo trace. interesting to compare new make to the aged
Is Rex finally seeing the shelving in front of his face a clear medicinal effect of BT White Dog Mash #1?
I been away for awhile
But I’m glad I got back in time for #danielmonth.
When talking about what changes and what doesn't between new make and whiskey would you say it keeps the SPIRIT of the new make?

buffalo trace is the goat keep it going guys ❤️ from KY
I so want to try this. can't hardly find their products now anywhere. Even had a guy working at a liquor store say he thinks the distillery had gone to withholding the products back to amp up supply and demand.

Yeah, all I got from White Dog Mash #1 was the tasting notes of corn and burning.
It makes a surprisingly good old fashion
For a second there I thought Rex was going to evoke a bit of ralfy wisdom... "The intrinsic quality of smell and taste."
Hey guys love your channel
Fritos... I tried it back in 2012 or so, and I was the only one on the tour brave enough to try it, and I got Fritos for the flavor
Listening to you guys talk about all the new make you review makes me feel like it's a better choice then half the cheap whiskey on the market.
I love Daniel month, I learn so much. I guess I qualify as a nerd.
Are you saying that Eagle Rare is just ten year old baseline Buffalo Trace bourbon?
@@awkwardme5375 Yes. That is what they told us
Awkward Me that’s the way it goes sometimes. For example, Booker’s consists of the best barrels of Knob Creek at barrel proof.
Interesting. And from what I understand Weller is the same mash build for pappy
ryan keller correct. Hence why it’s become so hard to find.
Nice theme music
Me: watching these videos. It looks great!!
Also me: All I can taste is alcohol!!

With all of the history lessons (which I love, I'm learning everything I can about whisk(e)y) I think you should do a show about different Irish whiskeys.
I love you guys
😃
Word of caution. This stuff goes down really smooth. At 65.5%.
You guys should have done the hand smelling technique with the buffalo trace new make. Things get crazy and changes as it goes!
I feel a growing disturbance in the vault. The moochiness is building.
P.S. Not strong enough yet Rex, you missed a chance to compare both the Buffalo trace and Dickle finished products to the new make
Rex's mooch skills were solid this episode, but you're right, the mooch muscles are not fully flexed.

Rex, have you found Daniel's secret stash yet?
I think we found the finale of Daniel Month 😂
Hey everyone if you haven't heard PBR, yes the beer company, is making a whiskey that's "aged 5 seconds" haha.
Where's my bottle down ceremony? You deliberately finished that bottle. But, no men were raining. Daniel month is over and we finish the month with the somms.
This is going to be the comment Rex picks next haha
Somebody couldn’t finish their shot is that why the last cheers was cut out? (I usually finish my cup with ya only reason why I’m asking.)
Rex year will be the only recompense for this illegitimate month of destitute.

Thoughts on PBR's upcoming
"5 second whiskey"..?
Gotta try this!!! Good Show
I'm curious why you've skipped over Baijiu in this month of whisk(e)y history? It's been around since the 1200s or so.

I need more cow bell
I get a ton of buttered popcorn in mine.
Did Rex almost turn down mooching?
Very I,formative video, I have done a similar one myself.
Hey guys... Could you review Oban Little Bay please?
Day 5 of Daniel month. I’ve run out of whiskey so I am drinking cans of poutine gravy until I pass out before Daniel’s story time.
What no bottles down Ceremony?
