Great video. I recieved a buffalo trace barrel for Christmas. I just decided to fill mine today. Started looking up videos and come across yours. Great video. I hit the like button and subscribed. I hope to see your results in future videos. Thank you for taking your time to educate and entertain us.
I filled a 5 liter barrel with 4 liters of Mash Bill #1 and 1 liter of Buffalo Trace on Sunday. Going to try pulls for 2, 3 ,5 and 7 months to see whats best for next go around. Added the Buffalo Trace to bring down the alcohol content instead of using water but hopefully keeping the bourbon char color.
@@ScottUrbach Just bottled this up today after giving a taste test yesterday. I am happily surprised at the results. To me, the smell is similar to Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel but the flavor and after taste are identical to my Stagg jr batch 12. All together I started this on May 29th and finished it today, Oct 30th. I did have to add one more white dog around mid-July because the heat (Devils cut) took quite a bit. I left the barrel in my garage for most of the time but moved to my basement on days that the temps hit 90 degrees +. I would really like to find out what proof this is. Oh, BTW, I am in Kentucky :)
A friend gave me a oak barrel like the one you are using. This is my first time to try aging my moonshine, I use a corn, wheat and a little barley mash. Thanks for taking thee time to put this video together. I will be following the next series.
Ahhh, now this is a very interesting project. I like your idea of moving the barrel around to simulate the climate change. Maybe even strap it in the passenger seat and take her with you when you run errands to maximize the agitation. You've peaked my curiosity to try this on a blend that can benefit from finishing out some of those rougher edges. Dump those bottles in there and forget about it. Maybe even a couple of blends that compliment each other so they can marry and meld in the barrel. So not necessarily start from scratch, but finishing or improving a blend that has already been aged at the distillery. I like this one Scott, 👏👏👏 thanks for sharing brother. JB
This video is very well delivered and informational. You did a wonderful job on this. I'm trying to develop my palate but I find it difficult to identify flavours.
I have aged Tequila several times for the last 5 years, to enjoy an Anejo. My goto time is 90 days with 36,60,90 tastes test. I also top off the barrel at those times to replace the Devil's share. This was interesting vid..... going to have to try it, thanks.
Hey Scott, love your bourbon videos. I had a quick question. Did your barrels come with stain on them? I just received mine but they don’t look as dark as yours. Do you think this would have any effect on the outcome? Thanks, Dan
Dan - don’t think it was actually stained. It certainly has darkened with age. As long as your barrel was pre charred before you got it you will be fine. It is the charring that imparts the flavor and color. Let me know how it goes. Thanks for watching.
So here's a funny thing that just happened to me. I got the bourbon barrel try to fill it up with water using a funnel. What I did and know is it was a 2 piece funnel 1/2 of it fell inside the bourbon barrel now I'm trying to get it out. Do you think I could still make the bourbon without having an issue with the plastic Funnel left in it? I'm also thinking of drawing the whole bigger in the top and maybe using a cork from a champagne bottle for the plug what do you think?
Ha. Well that is an issue. I doubt the plastic will affect the taste but it would drive me nuts knowing it was in there. I would worry that drilling the bung hole bigger would lead to even more loss to evaporation. Hope you can fish it out. Good luck.
@@ScottUrbach I asked a fellow person at the liquor store who had done their own barrel and said to not worry about plastic either. They said it's going to drive you nuts but just keep going with the process and not drill a hole bigger. So I'm now curing with water and I'll start the actual process in 5 days with the Everclear.
Help !!!! I have a question i have a 1 liter barrel with a spigot. If i turn the spigot nothing comes out, unless i remove the cork in the bung. Then the liquor flows from the spigot. Is that how it is supposed to be?
Just barreled my first Manhattan a week ago. Next barrel is coming and I think I want to do white dog. My question is, how many months in a home barrel equates to a year in a standard aging barrel?
I just ordered a barrel from Freedom Oak after seeing your video. I'm reading a lot of bad things about that company and a lot of people are complaining about leaking. Did you have any problems with the company at all? Did yours leak? How is your barrel now that you've had it awhile? Any fixes for leakage if mine does leak?
Jessica - No problems with the company as far as purchase, delivery, engraving etc. My suggestion would be to take the time to properly prep the barrel for use. A long multi day soak - filling the barrel with warm water will allow it to expand and limit leaking. I rushed the process the first time and experienced some small leaks. Second time around was much better. Be prepared to for a significant loss to the Angels Share - evaporation and the Devils Cut - absorbing into the wood. I would check often and bottle what you have when it reaches the color and taste you are looking for. Good luck and thanks for watching
Pretty strong stuff! I was thinking it compares to moonshine alright. Very interesting. We all need a stiff drink come tax day. Looking forward to the follow-up vids.
Cool stuff! I like the customized barrel you got. I could imagine it's pretty strong indeed. I have a couple of friends that would and do still brew their own beer. Always something I wanted to get into especially because I'm quite the IPA snob. Anyhow, hope all is well brother!
SS - I once tried brewing beer from a kit. Pretty much add water and leave it on a closet. Worst thing I ever tasted. Maybe something to try again and do it right.
So cool Scott this is all new for me My grandpa was big into making his own wine in huge glass jugs. He’s often use wild Alaskan berrys such as high bush cranberries, wild raspberries, blueberries, and salmon berries. I remember it tasted really good but was strong as hell. People would always ask him if he spiked it with ever clear haha
Two Questions: I was actually thinking about doing this with Buffalo Trace Mash #1. I actually live in Ky about 40 mins from the distillery so this is really cool. 1: Isn't the wheated mash like Weller and Pappy van Winkle mash? And Mash #1 is Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare? 2: Does the alcohol level rise or lower during the aging process?
Walker - yes I believe you are right about the wheated mash. I’m planning on trying it next with Mash #1 also. Although I did not measure the proof, I do think it increases while aging.
@@ScottUrbach I think it would increase too. As the water evaporates from the barrel, the alcohol stays and the percentage goes up. Is there a certain way to lower the proof? Is it simply just adding water to lower it?
Sean. Sorry if I wasn’t clear. I was using a white dog mash from Buffalo Trace. As you know they are one of the largest and best distillery’s in the business. I’m sure your local liquor store will have it or can get it. I was actually just about to start another attempt at aging some white dog from a very small distillery here in Detroit. Might start it this weekend. Hope this helps.
