Studies evaluating big data consistently show that black and brown people are targeted more frequently by the cops. Cops go into poorer communities, where POC are overrepresented and go after the poor people of color because they know that their lives do not hold the same political sway as, say a white person. There's a lot out there about racialized stereotypes and the effect it can have on groups of people in a minoriy/majority. Especially with the anti-black foundation of this country (slavery, jim crowe, war on drugs, etc.) we see many cultural undertones of racism and injustice. These undertones have detrimental effects on the way we treat and value different groups of people. Law enforcement disproportionately targets black people due to the school of thought they subscribe to, labelling an entire race as criminal. And the interaction between dominant cultures and sub cultures eventually forces black people to become a self-fulfilling prophecy. If there is no justice and you are born a "criminal" simply for the color of your skin, then why not commit crime. Also it is not true that black people commit more crime. Looking at usage/criminalization ratios for marijuana across racial lines show that black and white people use the illegal substances at the same rates, however black people are punished doubly. I'm sorry but I've gotten the opportunity to look through some cases and I can say thats also not a fair system. Theres a difference between a man who wants to slash because he was provoked vs a man who wants to slash because he likes to. There are many many factors the justice system needs to consider before they punish someone. Unfortunately people have biases and some cases are just put forward in better ways than others.
Euclase W you are definitely correct here. There are so many other factors that play into the “same crime, different time,” theory. People just grasp at straws.
My suggestion was for “sentencing” which a judge decides on. Yes jury’s can decide on the death penalty but a judge decides how long an offender stays in prison. That’s why there’s a separate sentencing hearing after an offender is found guilty or not guilty by the jury. The jury does not decide how many years an offender goes to prison for.
It was good to see that one cop was actually there to hear from these ex criminals. He even asked for information about one of the guys non-profit organizations because he actually cares about them

Last year, I was told to write an essay on a social issue of my choice. I asked my teacher if I could write about the problems in the prison system, specifically the lack of rehabilitation available. She told me to my face that it wasn't a real problem, even after explaining to her that I'm the child of 2 ex cons. She, a person with no history or experience with the criminal justice system, told me that she knew the system better than both me and my parents.
I actually did a similar research project for senior year. I must say that the prison system is royally fucked. Quotas, non-existant rehabilitation, it's bad man.
Teachers like that are highly concerning. No teacher should ever say something like that. I agree it's a problem. If a student comes up and says to you "I believe this is a problem" then they obviously see it as a problem smh sorry for the tangent. Teachers like that get me very upset.
Wow I’m sorry that happened to you. Don’t be afraid to take those things to your principal/dean (not sure how old you are). I hope that there’s someone at the school you can turn to in those situations.
Rehabilitation should be improved in prisons, just look at the reoffending rates of USA vs say Norway or somewhere like that, these European countries have much better rehabilitation programs for prisoners, minimising the reoffending rate and therefore costing taxpayers less money in the long run, its a win win for society

In a way that's true, but each of us as individuals have much more power over our own lives than we do over "society." Generally, what separates successful from unsuccessful people is taking responsibility for one's own actions.
True, but he did sound like he belived it. From hearing the felons side it really sounded like most the issues came from the higher level justice system such as judges. One who didn’t act and think very similar to how these two gentleman talked in the video. Most officers truly do think the way they do. "You sound like a law enforcement pamphlet" - This is exactly what I thought. That cop sounded nice but he's way too naive and thinks the justice system is fairer than it is.
Sometimes people break the law without knowing, sometimes circumstances force them to do so, and sometimes it's just because those laws are just stupid. Also, most of them said they accept that they broke the law, but they still dislike that the system is so imbalanced and unfair. People like you that support the law blindly are part of the problem.
I believe drugs should be decriminalised, so unlike you I don't view a drug dealer as an evil person. And yes, you are part of the problem because you think that anyone who is a felon is at fault, even though the system is unfairly sending a lot of people to jail.
Nate O. So lemme ask you this, if a drug dealer sells to children it's not evil? Sells potentially life ending, for sure life altering, drugs to others? That's cool with you? Just to see where you stand.
The problem that I have with the legal system is that once you’re a convicted felon, you never can pay back your debt to society in the eyes of the state. Someone can keep a clean record for 30 years after their crime but they’re still considered a felon and that always follows you around.
Dubstep Household People make mistakes at young ages though. I don’t feel it’s ethical to hold someone accountable of victimless crimes they committed at the age of 17-20 30 years after the fact. It’s one thing if someone murdered/raped another person. But there are far too many people being penalized for victimless crimes, or still being held accountable for actions that they’ve paid for several times over. Authoritarianism isn’t the answer for deterring crime, and it certainly doesn’t rehabilitate those who are convicted felons. If anything it incentivizes felons to turn to crime as the legal system has crippled their ability to make an honest living.
Dubstep Household What's the point of someone doing thier time if they aren't even going to get thier rights back? You're supposed to serve your time and then be a free man. But in our country, that's not how it works, does it? Also, I'd rather not run a country with fear like some tyrant. Maybe you do. Also, it's been proven that rehabilitation works. Just look at how any Scandinavian country deals with the justice system
Dubstep Household It seems as though your ideal country would be one in which you’re oppressed under a despotic regime based on your statements. If these people are honestly such vile threats to our society, why stop at stripping them of their liberty? Why not just execute them? Wouldn’t that preform the task of instilling fear and deterring “unfavorable behavior” more effectively? You see, I make such a rash over exaggeration because I’m not entirely sure you’re coming to grips with what you’re implying. Being a felon in the US not only denies the opportunity to affordable housing in most cases, but job opportunities, and even going as far as to strip you of the basic human right to self preservation by rescinding your 2nd Amendment rights. I don’t see how you can honestly feel that if someone was caught with a plant, or fake insurance card, they deserve to have their liberty stripped from them in such a way.
AquaAnim Obviously it depends on the offense, and the wait time to be forgiven should be dependent on the nature of the offense. But we need to take a hard look at what constitutes a felony, how we should treat felonies, and how that should relate to gun rights.

"So you're telling me there's levels of legality?" Well... yeah, I don't think a person that killed someone should get the same punishment as someone who was drinking in public.
Drinking in public shouldn't be a crime at all; it isn't in several law-abiding countries. And it isn't in some counties either.
Bruh did u listen to what he said after? His point was that levels of legality is blurred with objectively worse crimes getting comparatively way less time than other crimes he was pretty valid
Ye and self-defense is assault while assault is self-defense? :)
Drinking is legal. There should never be punishment. Drunks should be driven home. It should be recorded and the second time 12 step should be assigned. If they if they cause an accident it should go by vehicle code.
@@jsmeswagner6104 You missed my point. Drinking in public is "against the law" but not to a point that people go to jail for it. I believe you just get cited for it unless it's a repeat offense.
Kinda contradicts the other statement of there being some consideration for the crime being done
Can you do one on Judges and Felons? Judges are the ones who decide on sentencing.
Trz they could pick nearly anyone. Jury members don’t go out seeking to be on a jury
Trz Jury only determines guilty or not guilty
My suggestion was for “sentencing” which a judge decides on. Yes jury’s can decide on the death penalty but a judge decides how long an offender stays in prison. That’s why there’s a separate sentencing hearing after an offender is found guilty or not guilty by the jury. The jury does not decide how many years an offender goes to prison for.

What you should have said in response: “the fact you don’t think it’s an issue shows why I want to choose that topic”
Teachers like that are highly concerning. No teacher should ever say something like that. I agree it's a problem. If a student comes up and says to you "I believe this is a problem" then they obviously see it as a problem smh sorry for the tangent. Teachers like that get me very upset.

That timer ruined so many potentially good conversations/explanations. Why even have a timer?
I think that it is to avoid conversations getting out of hand, since the topics and questions are usually very sensitive everyone does their best to be respectful at first but it can get out of hand pretty quickly, putting a timer ensures that even if te conversation begins to enflame you just put the tension down again. It is true though that many times conversations could have been longer :/
Which means nothing gets done. You barely scrape the tip of a good discussion and it's time to move on, so what is the point of these?

The war on drugs is the biggest justice system issue there is. If we were truly free you'd be able to get education on all drugs and decide what you put in your body with no consequence other then the drugs afffects to yourself. Most currently locked up offenders are non violent drug offenders.. its a cash cow rather then to help peoples real mental problems trap them in a cycle that constantly takes their money and gives them no hope. Rather then allow the study of drugs like weed that could reduce use of other drugs and be medically beneficial even to this day its schedule 1 which means its illegal to even research it... which makes it easier to lie to people about its affects and push other drugs which the government sales secretly and makes tons of money off then in return lock up those same people and make money off their lives(Freeway Ricky for example)...... @@alexleon8836 because a lot of people dont want these videos to be hours long
@@alexleon8836 It's more of a debate, debate competitors are timed. This is done to make sure one person doesn't hog all the time, or purposely drags it out.
Everyone talking about how they should’ve got judges and stuff but cops literally act like judge, jury, and executioner
The asian gentleman was so right when he said about them being a police pamphlet

I’m going to be honest. I’ve worked with law enforcement the last 2 years. Talked to many officers from many departments. I’ve only met One bad officer. One who didn’t act and think very similar to how these two gentleman talked in the video. Most officers truly do think the way they do. It’s just that a loud minority is much louder than a silent minority.

Slumped SEEK to find middle ground not forced to at need to
Luarda Cläy seek implies that he wants to find middle ground and is open to it. This guy didn’t want to not did he give any effort to. Nice try.
Isaac Diaz idk what you’re on about he agreed plenty. He had discourse but he agreed on most questions
I think having his piece in there was valuable too. Many people think the same as he does. Maybe similar people can see how the conversation was stagnated
Izac Mcdaniel if you believed your life was wasted by a broken system that doesn’t fix people but breaks them then you’d be pissed as well
6:03 "a little hole in the system" those words really hit me. That asian dude with the ponytail had very good arguments
"You sound like a law enforcement pamphlet" - This is exactly what I thought. That cop sounded nice but he's way too naive and thinks the justice system is fairer than it is.
Cool. Maybe. So you're just going to throw your hands in the air, give up, and not try to fix it?
Sometimes people break the law without knowing, sometimes circumstances force them to do so, and sometimes it's just because those laws are just stupid. Also, most of them said they accept that they broke the law, but they still dislike that the system is so imbalanced and unfair. People like you that support the law blindly are part of the problem.
I believe drugs should be decriminalised, so unlike you I don't view a drug dealer as an evil person. And yes, you are part of the problem because you think that anyone who is a felon is at fault, even though the system is unfairly sending a lot of people to jail.
Charles Smolen lmao you're killing me man😂👐👍
Nate O. So lemme ask you this, if a drug dealer sells to children it's not evil? Sells potentially life ending, for sure life altering, drugs to others? That's cool with you? Just to see where you stand.
Anti gun vs pro gun!
Optt Tac9 this needs to happen
second that
That's what I'm waiting for.
Where do you guys lean? Just curious, not trying to start an argument.
Long story short: I'm *VERY* pro-gun.
Dubstep Household
What's the point of someone doing thier time if they aren't even going to get thier rights back?
I don’t see how you can honestly feel that if someone was caught with a plant, or fake insurance card, they deserve to have their liberty stripped from them in such a way.
speedgo41 Depends on the crime committed, petty crimes i agree your name should he removed, and given a clean record first time around.
AquaAnim Obviously it depends on the offense, and the wait time to be forgiven should be dependent on the nature of the offense. But we need to take a hard look at what constitutes a felony, how we should treat felonies, and how that should relate to gun rights.
I loved this video! Just makes me sad seeing the sides and knowing that my dad is a veteran and came out with Schizophrenia and PTSD, then the hospital he went to didn't help him and he came out even worse then before and then he went to jail and just made it even worse just sad how they didn't see he needed help just bothers me, but he is better today and is one of the most loyal, kind, and loving person I know.
He should never have gone theough all that I'm sorry he was harmed when he should have been helped, it's incredible that he has come out of it so well I'm very happy for your family
“Alright guys, that’s it. Go back to the wall.”
Not gonna let him retort?!! That’s it!
I was really disappointed, I wanted to hear his answer about the 'thin blue line.'
Y’all should make cops go undercover and go into prison as an inmate and see how other cops treat them 😂
In that case, they should have BLM or whoever disrespects law enforcement to act as an undercover officer.
@Brayam Sierra They would also see how dangerous it is.
60 days in, they send in a cop in one season. Great show, the guy from the military looking after a fellow Marine he met in there who had PTSD and was starting fights with everyone was good too.
Cops are not in prison. Prison guards are.
Nila Tix very true, my mother was a correctional officer for many years, not a police officer
When at the beginning that guy said ‘apparently some people are much braver than I am...’ he’s wrong. He’s the bravest one in this situation, because I’m pretty sure some of the others were nervous about what was going to happen that day, but didn’t admit it
yeah that over 1 million people have already watched
Gracie Louise exactley what I was thinking
yeah but i understood what he meant by that statement. its pretty clear from the context of thee question and him being the only person to step forward.
It makes me so upset that the one cop was like well looking at you I don’t see any of those mental struggles... they have known each other for like ten minutes. That’s exactly what you don’t want to say to someone who is struggling mentally. Also, how is he going to compare military to prison?? Most places won’t hire if you have gone to prison.
Thats not what he said. He was referring to how the guy saw himself; he saw otherwise, as in he saw potential.
The Hispanic/Latin cop was truly caring and understanding. He seems like a good cop that I would trust. The Asian cop seemed uptight.
From all that he said all you can only say he's uptight? I can see that he's truly concerned and wants to fix the justice system, plus he's one of tbe ones that has received the longer years in the prison system. You can imagine how that must've changed him.
Monique Nguyen the cop not the ex felon. I respect all these ex felon especially him for making it a point to try to rehabilitate other ex felon so they won’t turn to their old ways and try to make better choices.
Vanessa Ayangco I thought the other way around. The latino cop was idealistic and the asian was more open to perspective. But the latino was definitely a bit warmer.
Vanessa Ayangco nah, Ping was right, that cop was talking like a pamphlet. I see a lot of those type of men and they’re seen on all spectrums of race.
There is no Hispanic cop in the video
