I just installed mine today on my Tacoma. I don't happen to have any spare humans available, so my lovely and patient wife and I assembled the cap in pace, a section at a time, up on the truck bed....It went really well, lined up easily, and no weather seals were harmed, near as I could tell....Its all rock solid, works well, and I'm happy.
@@rickb1973 Hey there! Thanks so much for sharing your experience with everyone! Assembly in the bed is genius! Unfortunately I am NOT a genius and didn’t even think of doing that! Hahahaha! Enjoy my friend!
Hi there i watched your video and the product is nice but do you need to have maintenance once in a while? Because the evo needs some maintenance for the cap not to leak let say changing those rubbers and such. Thank you for your video gives knowledge to people whos wanting to buy one of these
@@TacklewithTony hey there! I haven’t done any maintenance on it. I would think you could get years out of the gasket. They do provide a spare gasket with the kit.
Great review! I’m looking for a super durable bed cap for my 2024 Tacoma. I went to the website and they are back ordered until February. It’s roughly $2k less expensive than the SmartCap so I think I will pull the trigger on one. I like the suggestion of assembling the bed cap on the bed to avoid lifting and possibly damaging the outside bed or paint.
What’s the temperature like on the inside after a day of sitting out in the sun? I’m considering getting one but plan on camping in it myself and concerned with the heat.
I don’t think I would travel with dogs in the bed in the heat, might be ok in cooler weather? There is a small vent in the front, but not really enough to be safe for dogs in the heat I would say. Hope that helps! Blessings!
@@SustainFear Hey there! Thanks for stopping by! We always get lousy gas mileage since this is our tow vehicle! But I haven’t noticed it being MORE lousy! Hahaha! Blessings!
@@alerma7 the Tacoma bed is a bit short, but maybe with some of the larger bed truck versions? We have not tried, for us it is mainly a means of storage and transportation.
How lockable is it from the inside? I’m a solo female camper, and I have no problem with southern engineering a lock out of carabiners and what not. some of these toppers dont have spots to connect anything to.
@@hannahtex6768 I (Pam) just returned from a trip during which I slept one night in the bed of the truck as a solo camper. If you just pull it to shut it the gas struts fight you, you can only get it close, maybe within an inch or two. If you attempt to latch it closed, there is no way to open it from the inside. With these considerations I would say your best ‘bet’ is to use a bungy cord to pull it closed, and leave it unlatched. However, this means if someone walks along and closes the latches from the outside you would be trapped. In my little overnight I used a mosquito net draped over the rear of the truck and slept with the cap access door open as well as the truck bed gate open, I had no issues. Note that I was in a Tacoma and needed the truck gate for length. I think sleeping with the gate up and the cap access door open would be pretty safe. Closing the whole metal space up tight in cooler weather will cause you to have condensation inside the cap.
Yes, the rack rails are there and they are going to be coming out with some crossbars specifically for this rig. I hope to snag some when they do come out!
@EdwinCastro-dv6us I would love to hear how ya like it! How easy to put together and place on your truck! How your delivery went! I am sure folks would love to hear your experience! Blessings!
This looks like a good deal vs. the competition but idk how it’s going to hold up offroad. That’s my biggest reason why I haven’t pulled the trigger. The way I drove offroad in my Raptor, a Lear or similar will not hold up lol. The RSI cap is too expensive for what it is and idk if I want to spend $10K on a GFC. Have you offroaded with this before?
@@whocaresjustdoit Hey there! Have not really taken anywhere too rough, just some forest roads, but I think it is more than tough enough to hold up to the task! The mounts are great and very adjustable. Seems rock solid to me! Hope that helps! Blessings!
Very good review, thank you! This is a viable option especially at the price point. I still don't understand why manufacturers of metal bed caps won't provide other color options? I can't imagine the inside temp (vent or no vent), when it is 100 + degrees outside. Neutral paint colors like silver, grey, taupe, or even tan would be great.
Yeah, Not real sure why no color choices either. All the metal one's I have seen have ALL been black! Yes, I am sure the inside temps get pretty high with sun beating on that black metal! Thanks for dropping by my friend! Blessings!
