- In this video I go over the thought process I had when considering a new truck topper specifically targeted towards overlanding. I'll go over things to look for, why they're important, and ultimately what I settled on for my needs. Remember to like and subscribe if you dig the videos!

Appreciate this video a ton. Been pricing out smartcaps, alucab adventure canopy, leer, and now an are. Trying to weigh out all the pros and cons of each. Thanks for the insight and adding another to the list to check out.
What did you get? I’m doing the same thing…
gFC, topo topper, ARE etc…
Great review makes sense. I have a Leer XR that I’m putting a Prinsu on. I had an ARE on a Tundra and liked it a lot. This time I am trying out Leer on a Taco.
How much dust and water still gets into the bed with this thing on?
i’d recommend the rsi smart canopy, it’s one of the best. it’s modular also so there are many accessories you can get for it. it is a little expensive however
I've heard some good things about RSI, however I haven't spoke to anyone with first hand experience. Do you have one? If so, how is the rattling /noise when under a tent, and how has the weather seal been?
@@squaredawayeveryday i don’t have one myself but i’ve been doing some research and i’m planning on getting one soon. from what i’ve heard there is no rattle and the seal is great.
My buddy has an RSI and I went on a week long trip with him. It's bomber and really nice.
Really like the internal structure. Do you think you could lift the top off by those cross bars?
Yeah you could easily lift from the internal frame. Thanks for checking out the vid.
Is your rooftop tent rubbing when offroading on your cab prinsu rack? i am thinking about the same setup you have! awesome rig man
Hey thanks man, no rubbing from rack to tent. Keep in mind, you can request what height you want the load bars be with the A.R.E. CX-HD. Let me know if you have any questions a bout your build along the way. Best of luck!
I got the ARE topper not the same as yours mine is fiberglass with the side windows that open hopping to be able to sleep in the bed of my truck . First time I did it rains got soaked to the bone topper didn't seal worth a crap next year I'm getting the canopy camper from alu cab
That's a bummer. At the end of the day it doesn't matter how good your topper is, if your installer doesn't know what he's doing and where to seal the common leak areas it'll always leak.
Where did you buy the inner rack to piece together the skeleton???
Look into RLD Design. About the same weight as fiberglass, roughly 200 lbs.
They must have improved over the years, last I checked RLD was significantly heavier than a fiberglass shell. Maybe I'll check them out again...
Or RSI Smart Cap
Hi --- does your ARE top leak, or let dust in? I have the same topper as you & it leaks a little bit but on dusty roads it sucks (the dust in).
NO SHELL IS WATER TIGHT!!! NO TRUCK BED IS WATER TIGHT !!! Wind driven vacuum rain/dust ... Positive pressure systems help
How much did that cost you if you don’t mind me asking?
How much does that canopy cost and how much weight can you load. ? Static and dynamic.
The price will vary from state to state, I've heard as low as $3,500 up to $6,000. Check out my A.R.E. CX HD review for the specifics.
