Very informative. I've already gotten some good work done on my first hack thanks to you! Did you ever figure out what caused the issue with level 1 when you tried to change themes to the underworld 2?
Hey thanks! That means a lot to me. That's great to hear you got some nice progress! As for the theme settings, the short answer is I am still scared of those. The long answer is that the theme automatically pulls graphics files. So let's say I'm using tiles 1, 2, 3, and 4 to make a mountain - those same tile slots will remain drawn on the background editor, but the graphics files now have different art in 1,2,3,4. Hi Earthbounds, thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm not sure why your hotkeys aren't working - would you mind telling me what operating system and what version of Lunar Magic you are using? Fortunately, you can still zoom without the hotkeys - on the top main menu tabs, click "View" - you should then see an option for "Zoom." This should be there for both the overworld editor as well as the level editor. If it's not there, and this is a problem for you, we'll see if we can figure out why your version of Lunar Magic doesn't have these simple features! Thank you again for your question, and have a great day! :D
@@DanOfMostTrades I just realized you had replied haha. I figured it out shortly after I posted, my Lunar Magic was outdated! I downloaded a fresh copy and it worked like a charm. I'm currently 1.5 levels into my hack. Can't wait for more tutorials! keep up the great work Dan
Hi sir, I have a problem here about copy the backgrounds from different levels. I mean using the standard backgrounds, I'm not changing or using anything custom. when I try to put in the yoshi's house the background from the underground it looks all messed up on the level… did you figure out how to do it? I already see how you tried here and I got the same results...
Hi Joesph!! Thank you for your question. There is a pretty clean way to do this. Let's give it a try. 1. Start by scanning through all of the levels in vanilla SMW until you find a background that you like. 2. Next, we are going to identify what graphics file is being used for the background. Click on the red poison mushroom icon, examine the top 6 tabs until you see "BG1", which really means "Background 1". For example, on level 117, the BG1 slot is occupied by graphics file "C". 3. Now that we know what graphics file to use, go to the level you want to edit. In your case, you want to edit Yoshi's House (Level 104) background. NOTE: I believe altering level 104 can also cause unintentional glitches to the game credits, as the credits sequence won't grab the same graphics files that you allot to Level 104. As an easy fix, I like to copy my Yoshi's House level into any other level, for example Level 105, as to prevent any glitches. 3. (continued). Open the level you want to modify. Click the red poison mushroom and change the BG1 option to match the graphics file we identified in step 2. (Example: C). This will look like a glitchy mess at first. 4. Go back to your level from Step 1, click the green leaf background icon (between the question block icon and castle icon) and select and copy the whole background. 5. Go back to the level you want to modify, open the green leaf background icon, and paste the background on top. Ta da! You should now have a successfully modified background for your level (: Let me know if there are any issues, problems, or lack of clarity. Have a great day!
Thanks but how do you change the background color I know how to change the palette but IDK how to change the Layer 3 color Edit: I found out but for anyone else wonder you go to palette editor and under "Level Header Settings" you click on back color and select what you want
Hi zetcat!! So as long as you've clicked on the green shell icon, and selected your sprite, you should be able to click and lay them down anywhere with the right mouse button. If that doesn't work, I suspect maybe you're using a different version of Lunar Magic than what I used in this tutorial. On the very top of Lunar Magic, click the Help tab, then click About Lunar Magic, it should then say something like "Version 3.04" somewhere there. Let me know what version you have and we'll go from there. Thank you for the question!
Hey how do you import characters from sm1 2 3? I have seen some really impressive hacks where people had characters and backgrounds incorporated from all different types of Mario games is that possible with lunar map
Hi, how can I create my own rom with Super mario world. This is still my favourite game and having the chance to get details of this would be awsome. Creating my own version of this game would be great. Can you help me if so how can I reach out to you. Thanks for your time.
So I'm trying to piece together a nice polished super Mario rom hack.... what I would like to know... If anyone could give me the right order of operations..... Patches.... custom music.....custom sprites.....copy...paste some already made levels... Does it matter? In which order should it be done?
Hello! Most of the process is modular, so you can put it together any step of the way. For example, when installing a new patch like the Retry patch, the only thing you'll have to do is start a new Save File, and everything else can stay the same. Or, once you've imported music, you might have to restart Lunar Magic before you'll see the option to use that song on your level, but again everything else stays the same. You can even lay down your level design first, and then import the custom graphics. It would replace just the visuals.
Hi Joseph, thank you for reaching out. I imagine that after you clicked the 16x16 Tile Map Editor button, a window appears. Can you tell me what you see here? 1. If you see hundreds of blue squares, try scrolling all the way up. 2. If you just see some bushes, maybe fences, goal tape pieces, etc, then try scrolling down. Please come back with detail of what you are able to see and I'll help figure out what went wrong! Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
This is super helpful! Thanks for making those videos. So I have a question, because I build a level just with objects. How does this effect normal gameplay?
Thanks Torben! First off, that's a really good question. I don't know how to answer this question to every extent, but I can tell you a few things that I know for certain. -Yoshi coins from objects are whole, from the tilemap they remain cut in half. -Midway checkpoint tape object disappears after respawn, but the tilemap version reappears on respawn. -Switch palace blocks will only activate if they are used as objects, tilemap versions have different behavior. I don't know if these impact game performance at all, but at the very least there are functionality differences. www.smwcentral.net/?p=viewthread&t=85268 After checking this resource, it turns out there are just a few more functionality differences, but it also can just come down to personal preference. Thanks again for your question and support!
Hey Ognjen I know you have a lot of questions, I recommend using the forums on smwcentral because that's where I learned most of my stuff. as said before I don't have a lot of time to tend to UA-cam because I have personal matters. Best of luck in your projects.

Hello, can we replace txt files sound effect inside 1DF9 and 1DFC ? Would link to replace it and use Zelda LInk to the past SFX instead. Thanks very much for your tutorial series.
Hi Cayme! Unfortunately I have not altered custom sound effects before. Perhaps you can use AddmusicK to also work with sound effects? I imagine if you add your Zelda files in the correct folder, and add them to the list.txt file, you can have custom sound effects. It may require some ASM or hex editing to change which sound efffect index to use. Good luck! (: Maybe I can't help, but possibly someone here knows the answers.
@@DanOfMostTrades Thank you very much for taking time to respond. Can i have a bit more info on what is ASM and hex editing please ? I'm not sure about Addmusic K can replace soundfx. @@Cayme Hi Cayme!! I can relate very easily to where you are. Ambition is good! It's going to be a hard journey with a lot of headaches but I promise you it is worth it. Although not a direct tutorial for you, that tutorial should get you started with using AddmusicK to modify your sound files (including sound effects). Additionally, here is a forum I found that specifically deals with sound effect files (.BRR file extension) to make custom sound effects. www.smwcentral.net/?p=viewthread&t=82102 The most valuable research tool i have is running a google search similar to the following line - smwcentral sound effect tutorial - You can then modify google searches like this to get more exact answers.
Oh I just have Snes9x open, it's not through Lunar Magic directly. I just save the file and then reload the ROM. Editing my videos skips all the waiting 🥱 that being said, I do believe there are ways to very quickly play your ROM in Lunar Magic but I never understood how it worked. Let me know if you'd like some help finding those resources!
Hi Connor. Could you provide a bit more detail please? If I'm understanding you correctly, it sounds like you do not have a copy of Super Mario World. Please note that Lunar Magic does not come with a copy, as that would be illegal. Please let me know if I am mistaken and you meant something else.
hey so um when i download lunar magic and tried to put in the test.smc it won't replie back because its the wrong format can you send me a link to the right format please?
Would you mind posting the exact error message? I remember hearing about this issue before, but I can't remember the remedy. If we Google the error message, there's probably a post on smwcentral explaining the solution.
@@supermariojonathan7466 no worries, smw rom hacking was one of the most frustrating things I've ever learned lol I don't fault anybody for taking a step back
Hi Jackson, I forget what it's called but there is a way, it's an additional software that is like an add on for Lunar Magic. I'm sorry, I can't for the life of me remember what it was called, but I remember it required some set up.
Hey, alright, let's tackle this! This is MOST LIKELY due to the default graphics INDEX in that particular level. To change this, click on the BLUE POISON MUSHROOM on the top icon bar. When you hover over with your mouse, it will say "Change Index Of Graphcis". Once inside, you'll see two drop down bars. One is for foreground/background, the other one is for sprites. You can actually play around with all of these options until you find one you like. For example, if you're viewing the 16x16 Tile Map editor while changing the foreground/background (FG/BG) index, you'll see some stuff change to lava, water, ropes, line-guides, and so on. Good luck and thanks for your question (:
If you are talking about the super Mario world levels then look up super Mario world rom and you can find it, but if you wanna test it then look up SNES 9X it's a Super Nintendo emulator
@@xboydubose7254 I’m not trying to down put SNESx9. But getting Retro Arch is easier because the graphics are a lot more HD then original SNESx9. Retro Arch also has many different emulators you can choose from in one whole program. Personally, I use Retro Arch for SNESx9...
Ah, irrelevant comment here but I have a question I wanna address, do you know the problem to a normal level causing the destroy smoke, i’ve set the switch palace set as event 4
Whenever i use the secret exit for the level before switch palace, it always causes the destroy tile smoke and effect and I dont want that, do you know a solution?
Actually yes! This is caused by two levels having the same ID. It's basically making a graphic and sound effect as if a castle is being destroyed because one level, most likely a remnant from vanilla SMW, has the same level name and/or event. I highly recommend deleting all vanilla SMW levels/events on the overworld to reduce these types of errors from happening. I wish I had an excerpt of this in one of my videos, but the idea is to go from left to right (Layer 1, Layer 1 Events, Layer 2, Layer 2 Events) and delete everything >:D You may need to hold PAGE UP to scroll through all of the existing events so that you can delete them all. While you're at it, it doesn't hurt to review the special level options! Click the Overworld tab (to the left of Help and Options) and look down to where it says "Change Boss Sequence Levels..." and the options below that. These are all worth reviewing. Good luck! Let me know if the problem persists and I'll try to find what else could be causing it (: thank you again for your questions.
Hi Dexter! Unfortunately, it's a super lengthy and expensive process to get the original file. You have to get a physical copy of the SNES cartridge, and then extract it. I highly recommend joining an SMW ROM Hacking discord community for further instructions. I suggest joining the discord at smwcentral.net Lots of great people there who will point you in the right direction. :)
Hi Retro Play!! Let's start off by gathering information. 1. What goal sprite are you using? 2. In what way does it not work? 3. Is it intended to be the NORMAL exit, or a SECRET exit?
@@DanOfMostTrades oh i got it now. My Problem was i dont turn on the "View Screen Exits". I create a long Level from 00 to 1F and i do the exact same thing as you did in the video and it dont work for me. So i changed my whole level. Started now from 00 and end in 07: Exit to level 1CB. Im completly new in this since yesterday^^. I started with level 105 btw. My other problem was that some of my blocks are not really blocks, if mario try to stand on the block i fall down.
Oh good! I'm happy you found the solution to that problem. Your issue with blocks that are not blocks, open up your Map16 and make sure your blocks have the correct "Act As" setting. I like to use Act As 130 to all of my square ground blocks because 130 is the same as a cement block. Act As is very important for block behavior, otherwise your block is just graphics with no function (:
@@DanOfMostTrades Dan: Other Question, if i disable the HUD from super mario ( i mean time/items etc) is time deactivated? Or is it only Disabled on the Hud? Then is the question how can i remove the time from the game^^
Retro! I am happy my videos are so helpful to you, and it's great to see your passion. Since you have almost as many questions as I did starting out, I am going to teach you something special. Before we begin, I will tell you that if you make the HUD invisible, it's very possible that your timer is still active, unless your HUD disable tool states otherwise. First, we go to google and we type: smwcentral disable timer From there, you will find many results on options, such as patching, hex editing, and other tools. You can also just set the timer to 999 in each level by clicking the music note icon, click Bypass the time limit, then type 999 in custom time limit slot.

I can only truly Thank You for making this video, I wonder what you've been making with Luner? did you make any hacks that I can play?
Hey Dude, thanks for that, it really helped!
You betcha! Come back any time for additional followup question. Best of luck in all of your hacks :D
@@DanOfMostTrades You bet I will, I started to work on a hack with a friend and we need every help we can get :D
@@superapekid2815 Haha perfect! Every question is a roadblock, then once you get past it you get a whole new jungle gym. Good times.
Are you able to put a password code system in?
I tried this but it keeps saying my ROM is in the wrong format. Does anyone know how to fix this?
I just started going through this and I can't zoom in to anything in LM with Ctrl + or -, there doesn't seem to be anyway I can change the Zoom percentage either
Also, My 16x16 tile map editor window looks entirely different lol
@@krushruss oh good! Every time we figure something out we get another tool on our belt. Best of luck on your game!!
Awesome! Thank you! :)
thanks for the tutorial

Ta da! You should now have a successfully modified background for your level (:
Let me know if there are any issues, problems, or lack of clarity. Have a great day!
Level 17 is an unused level, an early version of Donut Plains 1.
Thanks but how do you change the background color I know how to change the palette but IDK how to change the Layer 3 color
Edit: I found out but for anyone else wonder you go to palette editor and under "Level Header Settings" you click on back color and select what you want
3:40 iam dumb or how do i put a sprite...??
This is an excellent tutorial, and I'm happy to see you uploaded a new one 6 months ago, do you plan on continuing after Episode 4?
Hi renegadist! I do, the next tutorial is going to be for music porting and addmusick. I just have to get to it 😅 Thank you for your support!
@@DanOfMostTrades No problem and speaking of music, will you cover how to create your own from-scratch music as well?
@@TheRenegadist absolutely! So if you have music that you or a friend made, you will be able to have it in a SMW hack (:

Can you make a tutorial on how to do a custom boss?
Hi, how can I create my own rom with Super mario world. This is still my favourite game and having the chance to get details of this would be awsome. Creating my own version of this game would be great. Can you help me if so how can I reach out to you. Thanks for your time.
How to create your own bosses and power ups? and such?
What rom download did you use?
When I open up the tile map editor I don’t see any terrain to choose from. So Confused 😕
Do you have a outdated version of Lunar Magic?
This is super helpful! Thanks for making those videos.
So I have a question, because I build a level just with objects. How does this effect normal gameplay?
Thanks Torben! First off, that's a really good question. I don't know how to answer this question to every extent, but I can tell you a few things that I know for certain.
-Yoshi coins from objects are whole, from the tilemap they remain cut in half.
-Midway checkpoint tape object disappears after respawn, but the tilemap version reappears on respawn.
-Switch palace blocks will only activate if they are used as objects, tilemap versions have different behavior.
I don't know if these impact game performance at all, but at the very least there are functionality differences.
www.smwcentral.net/?p=viewthread&t=85268
After checking this resource, it turns out there are just a few more functionality differences, but it also can just come down to personal preference.
Thanks again for your question and support!
Thank you so much, for a second I was worried. I learned so much while watching this!
Question, can you make your custom sprites like sprites that aren't in original SMW?
Hey Ognjen I know you have a lot of questions, I recommend using the forums on smwcentral because that's where I learned most of my stuff. as said before I don't have a lot of time to tend to UA-cam because I have personal matters. Best of luck in your projects.
@@DanOfMostTrades Well you know that i'm REALLY excited to make the project called ''Save the numberland'' so i'ma do it!
But dan, i don't even know how to use SMWcentral! I mean i tried to comment to users but it's so hard i don't know if it's visible to them!!

As you imagine i have a tons of questions, just a bit scary to ask on smw central or discord. Don't want to disturbing them. so i do my maximum to find response by myself. This is my first hack attempt and i want to remake "a link to the past". I know this is very ambitious for a noob but that's the way i've always functioned. I'm absolutely not sure about me but i want to try. Your tutorials are very helpful so thank you very much for that. Do you plan other tuto ?
@@Cayme Hi Cayme!! I can relate very easily to where you are. Ambition is good! It's going to be a hard journey with a lot of headaches but I promise you it is worth it.
To get you started, I will share you on Wakana's Music Porting Tutorial - I know this is not specifically for sound effects, but this is where i learned to alter sound (:
www.smwcentral.net/?p=viewthread&t=89606
Please skim through this tutorial, and use the ctrl+f function for "sfx" or "sound effects" as needed.
Although not a direct tutorial for you, that tutorial should get you started with using AddmusicK to modify your sound files (including sound effects).
Additionally, here is a forum I found that specifically deals with sound effect files (.BRR file extension) to make custom sound effects.

What did you do to play your level in Lunar Magic?
Oh I just have Snes9x open, it's not through Lunar Magic directly. I just save the file and then reload the ROM. Editing my videos skips all the waiting 🥱 that being said, I do believe there are ways to very quickly play your ROM in Lunar Magic but I never understood how it worked. For some reason I cant find the file thatll open up the levels. Can you help me with it?
Hi Connor. Could you provide a bit more detail please? If I'm understanding you correctly, it sounds like you do not have a copy of Super Mario World. Please note that Lunar Magic does not come with a copy, as that would be illegal. Please let me know if I am mistaken and you meant something else.
hey so um when i download lunar magic and tried to put in the test.smc it won't replie back because its the wrong format can you send me a link to the right format please?

does it work with super mario advance 2?
Is there anyway to playtest your level while making it?
Hi Jackson, I forget what it's called but there is a way, it's an additional software that is like an add on for Lunar Magic. I'm sorry, I can't for the life of me remember what it was called, but I remember it required some set up.
Really cool
Man i also dont remember that level
When I am at the 16x16 tile map editor it doesn't show what you have
Hey, alright, let's tackle this!
@@DanOfMostTrades I am going to try that and tell you if it works
HOW DID YOU GET THAT FILE?
If you are talking about the super Mario world levels then look up super Mario world rom and you can find it, but if you wanna test it then look up SNES 9X it's a Super Nintendo emulator
@@xboydubose7254 I’m not trying to down put SNESx9.
But getting Retro Arch is easier because the graphics are a lot more HD then original SNESx9.
Retro Arch also has many different emulators you can choose from in one whole program.
Personally, I use Retro Arch for SNESx9...
How do I get the rom
You search up SMW rom. Then there are numerous different websites you can get one from :)
(I assume you have one by now though)
where download for the rom
Good luck! Let me know if the problem persists and I'll try to find what else could be causing it (: thank you again for your questions.
how do i get a copy of the original game for my rom?
Hi Dexter! Unfortunately, it's a super lengthy and expensive process to get the original file. You have to get a physical copy of the SNES cartridge, and then extract it. I highly recommend joining an SMW ROM Hacking discord community for further instructions. I suggest joining the discord at smwcentral.net
Lots of great people there who will point you in the right direction.

My Goal dont work Lol. I need help. Why i dont work?
First, we go to google and we type: smwcentral disable timer
From there, you will find many results on options, such as patching, hex editing, and other tools.
You can also just set the timer to 999 in each level by clicking the music note icon, click Bypass the time limit, then type 999 in custom time limit slot.
