As much love as this film got I still feel it deserved even more. The actors. The Daniels. The crew. The fight choreo guys. The practical effects. The heart. The casting choices. The courage. And even the producers who agreed to back such a thing. All I can say is more. Please more of this bravery and sincerity in our art. You have to take risks, Hollywood. Look at the result…
Both Stephanie Hsu and Ke Huy Quan are such breaths of fresh air in contrast to the conformity machine that Hollywood can be. Very refreshing. Lovely interview!
Considering they have barely begun to be in it in Stephanie's case or have been out of it from the acting side for decades in Quan's side I think you are kinda saying "oh wow, fresh actually means fresh!!" It would be more surprising to see someone who had been in Hollywood in the limelight for decades that acted differently. Give it a decade or 2 before gushing over their freshness - the river eventually grinds everything in its path down.
love or hate the movie, you have to admit it's a cinematic achievement, especially considering its budget. there's so much heart, so much passion behind this team, and when they speak you can tell how much they love this movie. you just have to give it respect for it's maximalist approach, the performances, the themes it tackles, the uniqueness, the seamless blend of genres, and most importantly, WHAT IT DID FOR THE CHINESE AMERICAN COMMUNITY. when ppl say it's a once in a lifetime movie, they rlly mean it. and the fact that it's accomplished so much with all the odds stacked against it because of all this grassroots support warms my heart. this movie is a miracle, and i'm so happy to witness it.
I really adore Miss Janelle Riley as a great interviewer. Sympathetic without being condescending, encouraging and most importantly, knows the art of listening.
I'm glad to see Stephanie Hsu getting some recognition. It's also great that another young Asian American actress is getting some success on the big screen- For a while now, it seemed the only option was Awkwafina..
And to think Awkwafina almost played Stephanie Hsu's role. I think it would have been fine with Awkwafina, but I'm so, so glad it went to Stephanie. She bought so many layers and emotions to the performance that only she was capable of and I think Awkwafina would have struggled to replicate that. I also agree with you that it's great to see another Asian American actress get the attention they deserve and increase the talent pool for Asian actors in Hollywood.
If the heart were an entire person, it would be Ke Huy Quan. He is the heart, soul, and lungs of "Everything..." I hope the industry atones for ignoring him for 20 years by giving him plum roles from here on out.
I hope Stephanie sweeps up all the award shows! I’ve been following her since her Broadway days and she is incredibly talented. The role of Joy demands so much range and she killed it!
She was great for sure. I know a lot of people are making noise about how the film would have been wrong with Jackie Chan in Michelle yeoh's role - but could you imagine Awkwafina in Stephanie's role??! Shudders of horror intensify 😱😱😱😱 I honestly don't know what casting directors see in Awkwafina at all, she just doesn't work for me in any film I've seen her in.
Stephanie and Ke are so real...here's to a world with 'artheart' as she articulated, a world where we cry together and ask about heartbreak, and stay close to what we love!!!!
Everything Everywhere All At Once is my absolute top favorite movie ever. It means so much to me and every bit of my life. I've been each one of the characters at certain times, gone through so much and come out better than I ever could have imagined.
These two are one of the most inspirational rolemodels for anyone who doesn't feel seen or taken seriously in any industry and who want to break out of the boxes that they have been put in by others.
These two and the entire EEAAO cast operate from a place of such gratitude and it shines in everything they do and they feel very grounded. This is a HUGE thing given our society tends to prop up attention seeking people. I adore Ke and Stephanie. They are a gold standard.
I loved this interview so much. I watched EEAAO, and I loved it and cried so much in the theater when I first watched it. Then I cried again at home while streaming it. Love Stephanie and Ke! I wish them much success!!!
Thank you Ms. Hsu, Mr. Quan, your performances are extraordinary. Thank you for this warm, honest, unguarded interview. Invaluable insights most encouraging with broad application. Best wishes, health, joy and wellbeing… 🫶🏼 🥂 🖖
I loved this so much. It's so heartwarming to see artists who are grateful, humble, honest, and vulnerable. They're such great role models for all aspiring actors and filmmakers. I wish them all the success in the world. ❤
I like to think that other people's stories have been immortalized on screen. Since no stories about Asians have been made I'd like to think that there is a deep curiosity about Asia and our stories. First Crazy Rich Asians, then Parasite and now Everything Everywhere All at Once. Thank you for the stories SAG.
and the honest reality is that Crazy Rich Asians was actually rather borderline, when understanding it being about a fusion culture in Singapore, with heavily heavily western (British) foundation. If the English hadnt colonized Malaya and Singapura, the city wouldnt have had the impetus to grow into the giant commercial powerhouse it is. Very similar issues with the rises of Macau and Heung Gong
_The Good Earth_ was made in 1937, but it was Hollywood's depiction of Asians through a Western lens. _The Joy Luck Club_ in *1993* was a more accurate depiction of Asian-Americans.
Both of them knocked it out of the park on this film. It's a perfect example of a virtuous circle where everybody's hard work inspires everybody else to do better. They took interesting roles and made them so much deeper with their performances.
i love this interview so much it's so wholesome. jenelle did such a great job and ke and stephanie are so thoughtful i loved listening to their process
Just two absolute gems that I'm so glad I was introduced to by this movie. Hearing about their excitement and emotion at the Gotham Awards, I can only imagine how much the recognition at the Globes meant to them, and I have a pleasant feeling we'll see plenty more of it in the weeks and months to come. Bravo!! 😊
I loved Stephanie's performance. I keep saying bagel like her character in the movie now and it annoys my girlfriend so much she stopped eating them in front of me
11:14 “Short Round is all grown up and running for President.” If that story is true-and it sounds like something nobody could possibly make up-it’s a completely bizarre bit of serendipity and amazingly lucky for Ke Huy Quan.

Supporting actress competition is tough this year. Stephanie Hsu is wonderful in this film and I was rooting for her for the first half of the year, but after watching Angela Bassett and Janelle Monáe, it's tough.
The only thing I knew about this movie was that it was directed by the Daniels that's it. I had seen The Swiss Army Man before hearing about the movie so I didn't see the trailer or read up anything about this movie and thank god I didn't. I had no idea what the movie was and EEAAO has become one of my favorite movies of all time. Definetely the movie of the year of 2022 for me.
can someone who knows answer this question. Why would ke not be able to do this role if he didn't have his sag card? I thought if a director wants an actor sag or not they can cast them? I'm confused.
Wow I can relate. In fashion you apply and apply for a job, and many times the success rate is 1:99 It takes more than 8 months to get success. Acting is also way harder. It's disgusting to see these actors act with all of their heart, and the opportunity is so rare.
Ke Huy Quan is going to sweep this entire awards season and the Oscar and his acceptance speech will probably make me cry.
You predicted this right now. His Golden Globes speech made me 😭
But Brendan also did a great job...and I love them both...how do I choose??? LOL
@@houchi69Brendan is in the lead actor nominations and Ke in the supporting actor so they both can win!!
@@houchi69 OMG! I was thinking the same thing! Ke and Brendan are both amazing
You and me both. 🥺
Both of them deserve all the awards for EEAAO. Outstanding performances.
"... and have it be about art and not identity." What a brave and transcendent quote from Stephanie. Great interview.
I was looking for this comment!
I loved that part. ❤
What I thought was a humdrum question ended up yielding the response that will stick with me the most- from 40:43 on.

Do you have to pay to stay in Screen actors guild. What is paying for dues for?
It’s an initial fee and then annual fee. It provides typical union stuff, Health Insurance, Pension, Retirement etc.
