And they only pick "approximately 30 names" a years. If your name is not picked, try again next year. If your name is picked, somebody has to pay $55,000. With that said, given his work history, I'm pretty sure he could have gotten it 20+ years earlier if they'd tried.

    700 film and TV credits is just an incredible career.
    I've heard Ke Huy Quan's interviews since his Oscar nomination for the same film, in which he details how difficult it is to find work as an Asian actor in Hollywood. It's quite sad that a man of his talent was sidelined for so long, especially with such a big beginning as a child.
    But now I finally understand. I can imagine more than 40 years of his agent calling around, only to hear "we're sorry, we already gave that part to James Hong."

    • @lerualnaej5917
      @lerualnaej5917 Рік тому +3

      I understand that this is a joke answer, but if you listen to Quan's interviews, the throughline is that there weren't meaningful, challenging roles for Asian actors. Hong has talked about sets where no one chose to learn his name, he was just "the c****." Most of rhe roles he's had have been bit parts because that's all that was offered, and that's what Quan decided to walk away from. Even Stephanie Hsu, so much younger than either, has talked about leaving auditions where she was being directed to act in a frustratingly offensive way and talking to other actors waiting to read, who told her that's all that Asians can expect to get. It's why she'd never really considered pursuing a movie career and was going to stay in theater.
      Hong has done a hell of a lot, both on and off of sets, to increase rhe opportunities available to Asian actors. It's horrible that he's had to go through what he has inorder to keep crackint that door further and further open.
