    Used propranolol all throughout college for presentations and public speaking events. It works, even when you dont think it will, your freaking out all the way up to the point of getting up there, but once you open your mouth and start speaking you realize your heart is still and your voice is not shakey, and then your confidence starts to kick in and before you know it they cant get you to shut up. I would just take one an hour before class and another before the presentation and I was good. The only drawback for me was it made me a little foggy and hard to think well, which kind of sucked for the remainder of being in class when you had to do math or think or do problems involving complex information. Another drawback was slight impotence. This is not helpful if you plan on going to get that date and having fun later but does make the date easier as far as being relaxed.

    Thanks for explaining this.. I have had the same thing with very bad anxiety and then racing heart of 120 even when they gave me ativan and morphine ,the doctor ran tests and said it must be cause by anxiety. I started propanalol and honestly..it is so much better with this medication. I used to panic 10-12 times a day with my pulse up to 145...now I can even do presentations in class without having a shaky voice, and driving a car without my heart pounding! I can get anxiety I just don't go full blown panic as easily.

    The only problem with indral is that it dose not take your anxiety away
    you will be very very nervous and keep thinking about if it's going to work with you or not
    I advice you to try it first for small events and start with very small amount
    use it 2 hours before the event
    take small amount of it and push yourself into something that make you nervous
    when i stand in front of people in just say few word i get super nervous ( red face - shaking - can't read or talk - feel like i'm gonna fall )
    but i took 70 mg before my presentation and it wasn't big one but i was super nervous since i knew that i have to do it
    I can't describe how calm i was , when i noticed that my heart is not jumping and my face not turning red i kept going
    i took 20 mg in the morning 7:30
    and 50 mg 2 hours before the presentation
    why i didn't give up before and run because when the other students were giving there presentation mt heart wasn't beating and my face was Ok
    my heart always start beating even if didn't start or even if no one looking at me . just knowing that i will go after them makes me feel so anxious
    but like i said this time when i was waiting for my turn i didn't notice any thing wrong with my face or my hand or my heart
    i don't take it daily - just before shitty events

    Propranolol is awesome, but with one bad side effect if you are physically active. It's extremely hard to get your heart rate up when running fast thereby making you feel exhausted way earlier than you normally would. My old resting heart rate was 90 bpm. With propranolol it's around 53 bpm. I am definitely going to have to decrease the dose to less than 5-10 mg per day. I honestly can't believe how effective this works. I used to be extremely shaky under stress (military). Now I'm no longer shaky even two days after a 10mg dose. By the way, you are a genius. You need to be in the medical field. I know you have problems with anxiety. Unfortunately this horrible affliction keeps US from fulfilling our greatest potentials.

      +Marty Hough this drug is only for special ocassion, if you use it everyday, it will mess up your whole body, specially sexual and testosterone levels, if you are man, that;s the last thing you want to mess around with

    • @MKH-hq5eu
      @MKH-hq5eu 8 років тому

      You are completely right! I don't use it unless I absolutely have to (before getting in front of a large group of people), but I have definitely figured out that it DOES have it's negative side effects.

    • @naegleriafowleri76
      @naegleriafowleri76 8 років тому

      +Marty Hough The first time I used the drug, it worked wonders, i would use it sporadically for special event, and it would always work well. I made the mistake of using everyday for work, I used it for 6 months and the first 3 days it worked great as always, but then I started working less and less. I believe my body was quickly getting used to it, and it require higher dosage, even then, I could still feel some of its effects, but it destroyed my libido. I started gaining a little fat, even though I wasnt overeating at all. My testosterone was probably reduced, felt tired all the time. It helped with anxiety a little, but it ruined everything else, then I stopped cold turkey lol big mistake, my anxiety rebounded, it took weeks to recover and feel normal again. I mainly stopped because of I read studies where it lowers test and causes impotence. I still have the pills but only use like once every 2 weeks if that

    • @naegleriafowleri76
      @naegleriafowleri76 8 років тому +2

      +Marty Hough Also, have you noticed how every single drug that deals with depression, anxiety, psychosis, anything has to do with the mind, completey destroys your libido and even cause impotence? They all have impotence and sexual problems as side effect. This is because the rewire the brain, the nervous system which plays a huge role in erection and sexual desire. They also lower testosterone, which is also important for erections, this is why you feel tired, lethargic. All of them. Whats the point of feeling a little less anxious or depressed, if you cant have sex

Sadly I cannot take this due to being afraid of anything that will interact with asthma/respiratory problems. So nice to know the side effects. I think you did brilliantly. This is a Wonderfully explained biological break down of the mechanism of action of this drug.
    Well articulated explanations of what biological processes the drug is meant to help regulate and how it can help break the fight or flight panic cycle so many of us find ourselves in for seemingly no reason.
    I work in health care and wish doctor's and other medical professionals had your talent to explain complex systems in a way that isn't dumbed down but also isn't plain medical jargon. It's a delicate balance! Well done.

    I would agree, I had rather not be on a benzo. It could be debated that antidepressants and things like propranolol can be "addicting", but it's more appropriate to view these drugs as something that may cause physical dependance. On the other hand, a benzo IS inherently addictive i.e., the drug itself feels good to be on and you seek it out whereas with propranolol, you feel good because it's made situations easier for you -- the benefit exists in the situation and not directly from the drug.

    Thank you so much, my psychiatrist prescribed this for me because I have anxiety disorder and very soon I have to go into a deposition and for a month I have known about this deposition and it has been affecting and making me anxious, just the thought of someone purposely provoking me gives me anxiety. Anyhow so he thought it would be a good idea for me to just go ahead and be on this medication on an as-needed and your explanation was perfect, I am anxious about being anxious. I also felt anxious about even trying out the medication before it's time to actually take the medication for the deposition and I just found your video very comforting and understanding and exactly what I was looking for thank you. As you can see my anxiety causes me to ramble on and that's exactly what I don't need to do in a deposition.

    It would, but use of beta-blockers isn't indicated for long term use in general anxiety disorders. It's effective in rare, isolated circumstances where you might need temporary relief from physical anxiety symptoms (like in a speech, or presentation for example). The risks and potential side effects of long term use are significant with beta blockers, and shouldn't be ignored.

    For anyone who wants to try a natural alternative of anti-anxiety relief, I've found that Ashwagandha and 5-HTP have changed my life for the better. This combination chills me out so much, and even though I still get that "voice" in my head that usually starts the downward spiral, my body does not react at all, much like how propanolol does. But I also feel at peace in my mind and its much easier to let go off those anxious thoughts for good.

    Thank you so much for this video. I was prescribed Propranolol about five years ago for migraines. It has had a very positive effect on reducing the number of episodes, and making them more predictable. Now that you have explained the way the drug works, and the possible applications, I understand other changes in my life since taking it. I have been medicated for depression for many years, but only in the past five (coincidence?) has the combination of drugs seemed correct. I now wonder if the addition of Propanolol for my migraines has made the difference.

      You've made my day!! Of all the videos I've seen on mental health, drugs etc I have never come across a single comment commending the value of CBT over a lifelong medication regime! I've been ranting about cbt for years. I've spoken to people who are on benzos for 10-20 years and they say "what's cbt?"..I was put on xanax as a teen and have lost so much of my life being hooked on benzos as it was the only 'help' available to me before I got cbt

    Peak plasma concentrations are reached in 1-3 hours, so I'd say take it an hour before. It's effect is slightly enhanced if you take it with food. The 10 mg might be sufficient - it is often very effective from the first use. See if 10 mg works for you. If it's on an as-needed basis, the usual dose is 10-40 mg.

    Hey everyone... I tried this years ago and it was like magic for both anxiety and PTSD. I've wanted to get back on it, and also have recommended it to a friend. Unfortunately, neither of our primary care physicians "believes" in this. I also see a variety of NDs from time to time, and while they can RX prescription drugs in my current area, they're all anti-drug. Magnesium is great, but doesn't work as well. Psychiatrists tend to write scripts for really heavy, often toxic drugs, not this. So what type of doctor is everyone finding that writes scripts for this most easily?

    I have been on it for a week now, 20 mgs 3 times a day.. and WOW the dreams.. so VIVID.. some scary.. some just outright weird.. just had a dream tonight i slept for 1 hour and I had a dream that had to last the whole time.. i was fighting for my life.. i was on a bike going down this dirt road and a bunch of teens were standing by the road and rushing out to try to knock me off the bike, and they had stacks of boxes they would push out trying to hit me.. finally one got me and we fought for 20 mins it seemed like, he was trying to kill me.. my fiance woke me up when i had him in a bostom crab.. if you dont know what it is google it.. but his back was literally 90 degrees the wrong way and he was still fighting back.. that has been the worst dream so far.. in the same dream my fiance cheated on me, i took off in the car, realized i was going the wrong way, had no idea where i was to begin with but knew we came from the other way, so I turned around to go back but it was a one way road and i had a 3rd person view of myself driving and these cars almost hitting me head on and screaming at me from going the wrong way, thats when i was suddenly on the bike and hundreds of teenage people was trying to knock me off the bike and beat me to death.. its helped with my anxiety.. i dont feel as bad.. i sweat ALOT tho.. could be a mix of other meds im on as well.. but the dreams... i love it.. dreams is the only way we literally can escape reality and step into other dimensions.. yes some might be strange and scary but its cool to have it happen EVERYTIME you sleep or nap

    dude, I hope you see this comment:
    I had a pretty bad experience with social anxiety at my new job and it was affecting me in a significant way. One day I had a full on anxiety attack in one of weekly meetings and I felt so bad about it. I went home that day and decided I must find a solution. I remembered reading about beta blockers previously and thought that might be the solution otherwise I'll just drink some alcohol before any meeting...
    Anyway I found your video and watched the whole thing. I then found an online pharmacy and ordered some Propranalol to try it. I took 20 mg the next time we had that meeting and I found out that all my anxiety was just gone. I now use it regularly before any meetings and it's working great. I don't have any problems like that any more and my work life is so much better. Seriously, this is like a magic pill.

    Also, why pull an all nighter? I really can't say what the sensation means, but I would recommend some guided meditation or relaxing ambient music before bedtime (liquid mind is a good artist for this). Some of the sensations you feel could be psychosomatic and caused by your anxiety. It's really hard to re-frame these sensations as something benign, but you gotta try. I am surprised again and again when this happens to me.

    Speaking from experience, and reading the general consensus in related forums, you do condition a tolerance for them. I noticed my first speech only required 10 mg of Propranolol, but by the end of speech class that semester (about 6 speeches later) I needed about 50 mg for the same effect. At that dosage I started getting some mild side effects that spooked me from taking more.

    does the cold hands feeling induce any peripheral anxiety even when knowing the cause? I have a type of anxiety and panic that is very centered around my body interpreting pretty much every sensory signal as a threat and I am in talks with my doctor about Propranolol as a trial but I have anxiety about taking it for anxiety haha.

    I thoroughly reccommend Propanolol for reducing (and often removing) the 'fight or flight' response associated with anxiety. I have had terrible problems tapering of the medication Pregabalin. When the blood level of Pregabalin is low I get horrible anxiety and crippling palpitations. These symptoms are really horrific. Taking Propanolol hugely reduces the withdrawal symptoms and makes life so much more bearable. For me side effects are not an issue. The only mild problem is cold hands (a known side effect). If you suffer with stage fright or social anxiety problems I would have thought Propanolol will help a lot.
