super mario was written in fucking assembly. all this kid did is basically bought a bunch of shit from the unity asset store and strung it together with some scripting. the game dev equivalent of a script kiddie. unity is a full engine with graphics, audio, physics and EVERYTHING built in. yet this piece of shit was all he managed.
super mario was built from the ground up. they started with no graphics libraries or shit, just raw assembly drawing pixels to the screen one by one. and yet they still made a game 10000x more entertaining than this
you guys were pointing out the fact it shot out the casing and bullet but didn't even put a finger on the fact that the gun and guy completely disappeared after it was fired

Don't tell me what I did and didn't try without knowing me. I've already produced better shit than this. Not that much better, but playable. And I knew it wasn't particularly good and thus never bragged about it. But even you should understand that taking money for something like that is completely different - if that guy had any sense for quality, he wouldn't have dared to put this shit on Greenlight. I've seen completely free hobby projects that were 10,000 times better. If he just wanted attention/acknowledgement for his work, there are better places for that. Steam Greenlight is business, not a proving ground for naive beginners.

I never said that, also I barely have any nostalgia for Super Mario etc., I stopped playing Nintento games at least 15 years ago.
But still, saying these old titles have no sense of art in them is an insult. This can only come from someone who hasn't thought one second about this, because especially the old titles with their pixel art involved incredible effort and knowledge about colors, perception etc. because the amount of usable pixels was very limited. I still consider Final Fantasy 6 one of the graphically best games ever, because it's insane how they managed to combine sprites like that. Even today pixel art can be more expensive for the developer than 3D graphics - and I mean pixel art, not that cheap "retro" shit some indie devs make.

Some of the greatest games were the easiest to build? How absurd. Coding a game was several times harder back then than it is now. Programmers had to be knowledgeable and creative to make good games. They didn't have pre-built engines and toolkits to use. They also had much more restrictive hardware to build around and had real limitations to deal with. Those people were masters of their craft.

Yeah, I had to create a really shitty Pong in OpenGL and it was fucking hard as fuck, and I'm pretty sure that OpenGL is way easier than what they had at the time. Nowadays you could do that shit in Unreal in like 5 minutes with blueprints.

Kids whose first games were on the 7th gen consoles. They unfortunately don't know the wonders of 8 bit and 16 bit gaming or the amazement we felt when 3D graphics became a thing. Its just standard for them now.

It's like the classic films and literature that were amazing for their time, they're still looked back on and enjoyed even though the people who experienced it first are long dead now.

Unless you count VR but I think a quality experience like that is still far off, and that current VR tech is just a gimmick that'll die out like all the others. There isn't anything to go ohhh and ahh over anymore. Everything is just an interactive movie now. There will never be another time like the jump from 16 bit to 3D. There is no excitement left anymore. The magic is gone.

hehe as a user of ue4 all the stuff used in this "game" is stock starter content, with some free gun and zombie models
Kite demo assets, starter content grass material, starter content explosion particle for the pathetic "muzzle flashes", (as well as the starter content smoke particle), default ue4 mannequin in the trailer, default ue4 first person template for the actual game. As well as the cabin, gun, and zombie models which were all most likely downloaded from the marketplace. I would even say that the bullets were downloaded from some marketplace. He was probably too lazy to open a 3D modeling program and spend a few minutes making a bullet mesh.
