As you increase your energy you keep going faster, a rocket pumping out fuel will always feel like its accelerate to an observer. As you get closer to lightspeed however, space around you will contract. While some relatively stable observer might see two stars be 1ly apart, if your close to the speed of light from your perspective (assuming you are parallel to the stars) they are closer together. You're not traveling faster than light, your going some percent of it but now there's basically less distance to travel. Now lightspeed is consistent across all observers, yes, so your perspective of a 5 minute journey over what used to be 1ly would be seen as over a year long trip to an observer on Earth.

In the time the light has traveled from the galaxy to our eyes, the galaxy has since traveled through space also. Most of the stars you see in the sky aren't actually there. You see the light at the time it illumined from the star. In the time it took that light to travel across space to reach your eye, the star has since shifted position. I always found that thought quite humbling.
Sagittarius A* Much, MUCH less in terms of percentage. But quite a lot in terms of km's/parsecs/light years. I can't remember now, but I think it came to 0.0xx% ... Because Andromeda is SO LARGE, any movement it makes is not nearly as pronounced. So as observers from Earth, it's more or less in the right spot. Technically it's not, but from our viewing angle it would be difficult to impossible to tell to any degree of high certainty.

Andromeda isn't a part of our galaxy, it is a galaxy.
It's not hopeless at all. There's still a lot of scientific discoveries and inventions to be made. I guess a good solution to your problem would be quantum teleportation, we just need more time.

It's sad how we may never have a chance to explore space to it's full extent; how would mere humans travel to other galaxies, if even light can't do it fast enough? Space is too beautiful not to be experienced by someone. It makes me really sad.

What are you guys on about? Sure, the Alcubierre drive could be a solution, but it's just a theory - and humans don't have superpowers, Sherlock - Dark energy/matter is everywhere in our universe, _everywhere_, we just can't see it.
What I meant was first we need to observe dark matter/energy in such way so as to harness them. Currently, we have not been successful in doing that.
6:57 I'm not a huge fan of how this is portrayed, it spreads the misconception that the speed of light is really some sort of traditional speed limit. As you increase your energy you keep going faster, a rocket pumping out fuel will always feel like its accelerate to an observer. As you get closer to lightspeed however, space around you will contract. While some relatively stable observer might see two stars be 1ly apart, if your close to the speed of light from your perspective (assuming you are parallel to the stars) they are closer together. You're not traveling faster than light, your going some percent of it but now there's basically less distance to travel. Now lightspeed is consistent across all observers, yes, so your perspective of a 5 minute journey over what used to be 1ly would be seen as over a year long trip to an observer on Earth.

I would like to add that we are only seeing the light 'shadow' of Andromeda anyway. It's apparent position isn't its actual position. In the time the light has traveled from the galaxy to our eyes, the galaxy has since traveled through space also.
Most of the stars you see in the sky aren't actually there. You see the light at the time it illumined from the star. In the time it took that light to travel across space to reach your eye, the star has since shifted position.
I always found that thought quite humbling.
Also due to the Milky Way and andromeda moving towards each other. andromeda looks smaller than it would if light moves at an infinite speed
so does that mean andromeda is actually much closer than it appears?

Much, MUCH less in terms of percentage. But quite a lot in terms of km's/parsecs/light years. I can't remember now, but I think it came to 0.0xx% ...
Because Andromeda is SO LARGE, any movement it makes is not nearly as pronounced. So as observers from Earth, it's more or less in the right spot. Technically it's not, but from our viewing angle it would be difficult to impossible to tell to any degree of high certainty.

Definitely. Despite my heightening love in the sciences surrounding psychology, astronomy will always be amazing to me and I will never not be interested in it.
