I was at the Philly show in 96 too! It was the Troc, or maybe the TLA and it was definitely advertised as their last show- maybe they played Baltimore on a whim afterwards. Such a great show, they encored with Forgotten Favorite and the bass was badly out of tune, but it didnt matter- pure pop brilliance. Those were the days...
This reminds me of the first time I visited the states I spent the summer in Ocean City, but on the way out I bought a load of CD's in NY. This was one of them Perfect summer soundtrack Brings back good memories
This whole album is great. I miss those daze. BTW, only saw this band once at R.P.I. We had our friends mom "chaperon" us because we were like 16. Only way we could get in...
I agree, the 90's for me were one of the most musically interesting eras. Back then there were a lot of bands doing whatever they felt like doing. And like the guy said it was about the music, not caring how you looked or trying to be pigeonholed into a certain type of genre.
Had this since 1994 when alternative meant just that. I agree with mark3407 - awesome even w/ flaws. Great voice and TRULY alternative sounds that have not been copied today.
Saw VG close down the old 9:30 Club with a New Year's Eve show, before they moved the 9:30 to V Street. Back in the 90's, DC had a great local music scene--VG, Eddie from Ohio, Last Train Home, and of course the lovely Eva Cassidy. Sarah put out a solo CD last year that's pretty sweet. "City Morning Song". Check it out.
Sarah, Kelly and Jim put out an EP shortly after the band's break as well under the name Starry Eyes. Archie has done some stuff with The Saturday People in the past few years.
I used to love VG back in the day. Most of my fraternity brothers didn't really get it (or most other people I knew for that matter). They were probably the loudest band I ever went to see (and I went to see a LOT, espeically during this time period).
I’d seen this band in DC and had heard their many songs from their cds (friends of mine knew the band) and my take away was always that if they turned the vocals up a bit so that it wasn’t obscured by the instruments (on so many tracks), they may have been much bigger. They were pretty good and had the spirit, enjoyable group of people. I’d always wondered if it was a choice to have the vocal track in the same range as the drums and guitars, and wondered if others enjoyed it this way. Not every song, but enough to wonder.
My teacher said the word "velocity" today and all of a sudden I got fashbacks in my head of some 90's band. Thanks to trusty youtube, I've found a song I used to love and I'm bouncing around in my room again like I did when I was 15. :)
I guess it was as I moved down to London in December 94. It was a split headline with Jale and I recall it was jale headlining that night but to be honest they couldn't top Velocity Girl. It was at the blue lamp?? i think. I also saw Vic Chesnut around the same time at the Adelphi which is one of the best gigs I've been to, which is kinda odd as coming from York I hardly ever went to Hull as Leeds was just down the road and I was always at the Duchess. Enough waffle I think!
I never got to see this when it came out, so thanks for making it available. I remember when I first heard about them, on the profile NPR did on them (maybe on "All Things Considered" in the early '90s, when this song came out?).
Was that in 1994 - September time? I remember they were billed to play Scunthorpe with 'Done Lying Down' of all bands - and I nearly came in my pants given that I am a fan of both. Unfortunatley the gig was cancelled. Depression soon set in. Scunthorpe was never an easy place to grow up and let downs were hard to take.
I think you guys are right, now that I've found the video and watched it. Seems to fit the motif. I must have seen these back to back or something back in the day, haha.
I also remember seeing this on 120 minutes here in the UK way back when...I saw them in Hull of all places with Jale (remember them?). Highly recommend playing Simpatico again, its smart.
I was wondering what's on the t-shirt the bassist is wearing, thinking it might be another band, like Swirlies t-shirt being worn in the Crazy Town video. Due to bad video quality I struggled reading it, but thanks to your comment(s), mystery solved :D It appears to be Jale promo t-shirt from 1993, featuring The Fifth Foolish Virgin, an engraving by Martin Schongauer. However, it was never featured on any of their records. But since this is the first time I hear about Jale, I'd say after all these years that promo t is still doing the promo part. Anyway, there's someone selling the same shirt on Ebay for $265. Cheers :)
@slowdive49441 I don't hate the song or the album. I bought it when it came out, out of the blue when I asked my trusted indie record store clerk (remember when we had those?) for a recommendation. (Ahh, the days when I had $30 that needed to be spent on CDs no matter what). It was decent little pop record, having 3 or 4 tracks that I really enjoyed. Years and years since I've heard the album as a whole, so it might not have aged well, but I quite enjoyed this last listen to "Sorry Again".
Ha, ha, I'm an Xer born and raised in the suburbs south of Seattle, and though I never made it to the O.K. Hotel, I remember seeing handbills in my HS daze in the late 80s, promoting "Sweaty Nipples" gigs there... I always wondered what kind of band that was. Seriously, I wish I could have seen VG play live back then... they've been a favourite since my Uni days in the early-mid '90s. I think I still have a bit of a crush on Sarah.
Velocity Girl rocked on all the albums i am [copaceitc(?), simpatico, and gilded stars and zealous hearts; does anyone know what happened to them, why thye broke up, where they are now?
I swear a remember a better video for this song. All I can remember is the lead singer riding some carnival ride while singing. But I guess that I was wrong and was in fact mistaken all along.
where is this band from ? what's the nationality? what happened to the band? why they broke-up? is it because it's indie, and making less amount of money?
This is catchy and I like it. Of course it's "alternative" because you have a general public with no artistic tastes who think the past twenty years of music by Janet Jackson to Jessica Simpson is catchy since it is so bare and devoid of texture that anyone with a tin ear can follow the melody line. The definition of pop has been dumbed down by the corporate music industry.
@rickzters Yeah. Woo-hoo! 1993! We were so much cooler in 1993! You seem to forget, sir, that the way they are dressed WAS the fashion in 1993. This was a very calculated look.
This is real pop music the way it was always intended to be played. Then Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson came along and redefined pop for the 21st century for musical illiterates who wouldn't know good artistry from stuff that comes out of their butts.
Man the 90's had so many wonderful women fronted bands!
I miss the 90's!!!
I especially want Eve's Plum to reunite. Eve's Plum and The Sundays.
indeed
Juliana Hatfield, Blake babies, Liz phair, Helium, Bettie serveert, Tiger Trap, Aimee mann and to many others to name.
Good call on Eve's Plum
Shout out to my girlfriend's parents for keeping the spirit of the 90s alive
Favorite record summer of 1994 wore that CD out. Not a bad song in the bunch first record is great as well.
I got to see their last show in philly back in 96. One of the best shows I ever got to go to
Their last show was at the 8x10 in Baltimore! (Not counting a one-off reunion in D.C. in 2002.)
Your pretty

one of the best indie pop groups from the east coast...
ever. there are still very few albums that stand up to copacetic.
How u doing bro

I miss VG! I have many great memories from seeing them live.

This really takes me back....great era in music and a great pop/grunge band!!!
Had this since 1994 when alternative meant just that. I agree with mark3407 - awesome even w/ flaws. Great voice and TRULY alternative sounds that have not been copied today.

She's beautiful.
Velocity Girl ... under rated and under represented
For better or worse, in an alternate universe this cut became the backing track for the "Friends" intro.
Sarah, Kelly and Jim put out an EP shortly after the band's break as well under the name Starry Eyes. Archie has done some stuff with The Saturday People in the past few years.
I'm really LOVE this band!!
Still love this.
ah, the memories...such energy and good vibes...if u never saw them live, u missed out, man
I used to love VG back in the day. Most of my fraternity brothers didn't really get it (or most other people I knew for that matter). They were probably the loudest band I ever went to see (and I went to see a LOT, espeically during this time period).
There was a LOT of bouncing up and down….call it “ mild moshing”

Black Cat, live downtown DC.
+NRFC I lived in DC at the time their first album came out on SubPop and I remember seeing VG lots of times at The Black Cat Club
reminds me of an old gilrfirend i had when i was 18 back in the mid 90s!! good ol days/////
takes me in time!!
We were all young and happy in the '90s.
I can't believe it's from so long ago
Reminds me of a summer I spent in the States, Ocean City, MD, great times
so much good music in the 90's, my favorite era.
It's somgs like this that make me realize that pop music really can be catchy & tasty without being lame.
I never got to see this when it came out, so thanks for making it available. I remember when I first heard about them, on the profile NPR did on them (maybe on "All Things Considered" in the early '90s, when this song came out?).

Sarah! Get the band back together and let's hear these songs again!
I think you guys are right, now that I've found the video and watched it. Seems to fit the motif. I must have seen these back to back or something back in the day, haha.
@slowdive49441 Simpatico was a great album.
My forgotten favorite

@rickzters Im pretty sure it was just as much about trends then as it is now. The hipsters haven't changed, just their style.
Ahhhh.... memories.
i love this song♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Such an amazing song. Such a cheesy video. I still love it, though.
90s at their best
Cool song. I only wished they would have released "One Thing LEft to Say" as a single (and made a video).
If you guys love Velocity Girl, you will also love Glacier Veins. Look up a song called "Northern."

Well, actually I've heard from a slew of people who think this is rubbish. Not "old-skool", I just think this is incredibly disingenuous.
is this video claimed by NWO copyright so far dear ebutu0y?
Is it just me or are the male backing vocals seriously off key? They sound really weird to me now.
