I'd also advise, anyone desoldering or resoldering points on a very old board like this that it's even more important to have a good fume extractor, because of those older fumes containing probably lots more lead in em, and more importantly the rosin is a lung agitant, like putting wax in your lungs.
I have a question. My Genesis board is different from the one in the video. I think it's a VA6 because the power supply input is not directly on the board, but is attached via a cable. I tried using your method and I still can't get it to boot. Do you have any suggestions?
Been messing with the nes and learned a lot recently. I'm a Sega Genesis head so that's where I'm heading next. Thanks for the tips! I love how much easier the system and games are put together! SEGA!
what about the "other" version of the gen 1. that the power jack is separate and has no solder issue and does not turn on.. like. its not part of the main board. its wired to the plug
That model is the original model from 1989, also known as the launch edition. This one says High Definition Graphics on it, and also lacks the TMSS security lockout chip. I have one and I'm looking for a fix for it myself.
@@797gaming How many volts and amps does the functioning adapter have? Suspect my 9v 1,1 amps adapter to be to weak. Either that or the on off button is broken. I switched the power button on the genesis on whilst taking measurements from the circuit board with a multimeter, 2 of the 3 solder points had voltage at about 6v or 5v each the third solder point did have any power at all. HELP please :))
wow thanks man, I almost given up then wth let's just try putting alcohol on it, after it didn't work then I kept pushing the power button then it stayed on!! thanks alot!!!
Hey man i just did this exact same fix with the solder points on a Playstation 2 slim console and it fixed it right up, the solder joints must get brittle and crack after so many years of use! so if anyone has a no power issue on one, this is a potential fix for it! :)
My three points are shorted, i can see the pads are not touching and still shorting there and at the voltage regulator... I don't get it. Must be a chip shorted internally.
That power button i am having similar problems with the Master System 1 , when i hold in i get continuity when i don't nothing so thinking the same issue
hellow my friend, I´m from Brazil, sorry about my english. Is there any way to connect the videogme directly to the power supply without using the power button ? Many thanks.
My model 1 only powers up if I hold the power cable at an angle while it's in the console. I'm not sure if it's a bad cord or if resoldering will fix. Also the picture is so full of static that I can barely see it at all. It's the original rf switch on a CRT tv. I would love to be able to use my model 1 again as I am stuck with a sega 3.. and it's not very good of a sega.
Power sounds more like a power cable issue, not sure of the static image. My very first Genesis had an issue like that, took it to a game shop way back in the day! They tested a composite cable on there, which worked fine, and sold that to us.
Question: My power button is doing exactly what yours was doing, however, if i hold it down, I don't get a picture or anything even though the LED stays on. Is this normal and consistent with problem and the fix you are suggesting? I tried this, and while now my Genesis will turn on (it didn't before), it still doesn't stay on without putting a paperweight on the power button. Any other suggestions?
You should do a review of the Ace v3 glitch chip and how it compares to coolrunners, cr4's etc. I've always been a rev c kinda guy myself, but I'd love to hear what you think of them as I've heard they work well in coronas. Only like 9$ a chip too. Pretty surprising

God bless the genesis and its high definition graphics.
+Capn Cummings Mine doesn't advertise high definition graphics, gotta throw it away now :(
Yeah I have a Gen 2 also. It made me cranky because I saw a Gen 1 for the same price like two days later. Its really how that stuff goes. lol

@Dom LS1 Turns out it wasn't the power button, and it was my power supply

@@lasse1975 I'm sure its either 9V or 10V.
As for the amps, I gotta find mine.
I'm looking for it now.

+Sam Radford Yeah it's a common enough fix, I actually had not done it to any other console but it makes sense and works perfectly.
I know :) im happy to give input though (y)

My model 1 Mega Drive doesn't turn on. I will apply your fix after having a little bit more of practise soldering.
Hope I can thank you in advance...

I got a Genesis from this guy and the power switch you just about have to force it to turn on. What is the problem and how can I fix it?
button still doesn't work after putting alcohol any other suggestions?
I have the exactly same problem with mine. I'm so sad, I've judt bought Cave Story. How did you manage to fix Your sega Genesis?
Hi mR Mario. I was wondering how you came out to know just soldering should fix this issue....

+WorthiestWilly My clones were cheaper than the Ace you're thinking of then haha, if I ever get a hold of one then I will but not sure.
What clones do u use for coronas v1-6?
Will this work for the video port on the genesis or any other console for that matter?
Worth a shot!
Very nice, i do these things myself.
good video, hug from france !
That is a nasty ass Genesis...take some cleaning wipes to that thing!
Pretty sure I did later on
