Imo, the Mk5 is like the "inner little kid" GTI in a good way. It's sporty, refined but in a sort of Colin Chapman's shed build sort of way, it begs you to send it on every open piece of road you get, comfortable but still more simple in terms of electronics, and over styled in just the right amount that some love it and some hate it, but it fits the GTI badge perfectly. The Mk5 actully takes some skill with a FWD car to drive fast and for someone who loves driving it's incredibly fun and rewarding. The Mk7 is like the Grown up GTI. Over refined to the point that it can be devoid of any real excitement until you're really pushing (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), fairly straight forward and mature design while still fitting the gti badge, a lot of creature comforts, etc. The MK5 is the cool little hot hatch that you can buy for fairly cheap and modify, make quite quick for not too much money, and have as a weekend/track/autocross car and have tons of fun in, where the mk7 is the grown up, reserved daily that will get you from A to B incredibly comfortably while still being able to let loose when that windy road on the way there opens up for a short bit. The MK7 is a lot easier to drive quickly but that makes it great at being an easy car to daily and have some fun in. The Mk6 is kind of this weird in between where it really doesn't know what it wants to be. Does it want to be that fun all hell breaks loose hot hatch like the mk5 where you're having fun at virtually any speed, or does it want to be that comfortable daily hatch that can open up and give a lot of excitement when the time comes? Not only that, but I've heard enough horror stories about the Mk6's engine to steer clear of that car for good. One buddy of mine bought a used mk6 with a good service record, not long after he had to rebuild the top end, and luckily he was a mechanic or that would've been a hefty check.
I have the MK6 GTi Autobahn. Got it brand new in 2011 and love it. In my opinion It looks much better than the MK5, and possibly even some of the newer ones. I think that VW hit it spot on with this model, and it’s very difficult to find a better overall car for that price.

This is my first car, if you want something that’s nice to drive every day but is more exciting that your standard golf on a B road, can’t fault it. Insurance is a bit steep though
I remember having this towards the top of my list when searching for a new ride (back in 2013/2014) I had (on my list) the Golf VI Gti, Scirocco, Audi TT, 370z, RCZ (Had to be DSG or Auto and 2nd hand) brand new I was looking a 86/brz or Polo GTI (brand new) The DSG issues scared me away at the time....I ended up with a BMW e82 with super low mileage.... I still look at these in the classifieds as a 2nd car that's been maintained and had all issues taken care off...
Sid mate where are you based, ive got a mk7 gti if you want to have a lash and a comparison between the mk6 and mk7. Non performance pack, no performance mods (yet 😉😂) Birmingham based so it might be a bit of a drive
The MK6 GTI is great but it's a little aloof. A genuine everyday hot hatch but with a touch too much novocaine. Just a tad though. It's very refined, solid structure, comfortable with an effortless power delivery. Steering and tracking is almost perfect but when pushed really hard in high speed corners the suspension goes a tad soft, even with mildly upgraded VW DG springs and Bilstein Touring dampers. I guess you gotta go with at least Bilstein Sport. I was going for a healthy compromise... roads suck, but it's still a little soft. It's also a tad too "big" and heavy for my liking. I had a Manic tuned R56 MINI Cooper S w/ H&R's and Bilstein Sports before the GTI and the latter felt like a small crossover SUV in comparison. In short the MINI egged you on to drive like an ape on cocaine and never calmed down. It was great but also exhausting. The GTI encourages you to drive like a normal human being but will comply when you cane it with no questions asked. It'll SCOOT. 3 years later, I still feel like the GTI is about 15-20% too heavy. I like a hot hatch to weigh in at around 2,600 lbs... not 3,200. The only "new-ish" hot hatch options here in the USA that weigh around 2,600 lbs are 5-10 year old MINI's and the last-gen Fiesta ST. Sigh.
I like the mk6, especially the GTD's with the L.E.D.-rears..I also think the mk6-R looks better than the mk7-R....I like the fact that on the mk6, they kept the streamlined-look down the sides like on the mk3, makes it look mint. Sadly on the mk7's that disappeared....The 4/5/6's were less restricted and easier to tune imo as well....Stage-2 map these and you're looking at 300 bhp+....
I had a mk6 1.4tsi dsg in this red was going to do it up with the gti body kit and the leathers but the megatronics box decide to blow up 8 hours in to my ownership I miss that car, 😂
Love the mk6, being a mk5 owner I do think the mk6 looks abit more special.. however in terms of performance I feel it ain’t special enough. Even in my stage 1 mk5 gti, it’s just too good, it does everything too well. By no means is this a bad thing but it’s just not as fun as they could be

Mk6 > Mk5 all the way. Better ride, lower fuel consumption, nicer interior, better chasis, newer, snappier engine. I drove both, currently I have Mk6 GTI... great all rounder, and yes, it is very quiet for hot hatch... but this can be fixed easily.

loui loui nah you mean they’ve 1.6 tdi kitted out to look like a gti like nonces
AquaFlow um no I don’t. Come to Australia, everyone has actual gti’s 😐
loui loui thats me p plater mk6 gti
loui loui thats me p plater mk6 gti
The soundman called, he wants his job back
Mark 5z the nicest shaped one to date for me. Used to like thr old 16v superchip shape of the 90z but the mark 5z best one for me now
I really like your style man. Nice delivery!
A tune should be able to remove the traction control all the way
Is it normal for a 2012 GTI to be extremely rough? I live in Michigan and driving my GTI is absolutely horrible.
Get your shocks checked?
Can get 30 MPG??? I get 40 from mine!
Honestly I’m looking at these as an option for my first car. They’re useable enough to commute in but they move and they add a little excitement vs a regular Golf. Pretty cheap too.
Pretty cheap? Lol
Got one as my second car. Good jump up from a 04 corsa 1.2 active 😅. Been slowly modifiying it over the time ive had it. It looks quite modern still thanks to its interior i guess.
This is my first car, if you want something that’s nice to drive every day but is more exciting that your standard golf on a B road, can’t fault it. Insurance is a bit steep though
@@cormacwilton8683 Congrats! I can always insure it in my dad’s name until I get a little older
Tuddec Would do it mate. I would go for the MK V personally. Feels a bit more engaging and the prices are a bit better.
I remember having this towards the top of my list when searching for a new ride (back in 2013/2014) I had (on my list) the Golf VI Gti, Scirocco, Audi TT, 370z, RCZ (Had to be DSG or Auto and 2nd hand) brand new I was looking a 86/brz or Polo GTI (brand new)
The DSG issues scared me away at the time....I ended up with a BMW e82 with super low mileage....
I still look at these in the classifieds as a 2nd car that's been maintained and had all issues taken care off...
Why is he on the left side of the road?
Just reimagining this video as him taking it for a test drive before buying it. Skidding in at the start then at the end.. ‘nah.. not for me mate’
Wrf is has drum? Mine has disks
Those alloys are woeful
Agreed, look extremely chavvy.
They were a carry over from the Mk5 and a nightmare for corrosion being diamond cut.
@James Gunn Just dont seem to fit the era of the car correctly imo
Sid mate where are you based, ive got a mk7 gti if you want to have a lash and a comparison between the mk6 and mk7.
Non performance pack, no performance mods (yet 😉😂)
Birmingham based so it might be a bit of a drive
If you've got Insta message him on there mate
i had a golf as you can see and got a speeding ticket so never never speed again so i wonder how much you was doing......
Sigh.
You should do a review on the MK7 pre facelift performance pack
The front end is so much better then the MK7 tho!! And the black piano black plastic is trash in the 7
Is it better than a leon though?
Yes
Great video! Have you driven a 6c Polo GTI and if so would you recommend one for my first Hot hatch/Performance car? Cheers 👍🏼
Great video!
Pull out the abs/esp module fuse out and slide The car how u like
I had a mk6 1.4tsi dsg in this red was going to do it up with the gti body kit and the leathers but the megatronics box decide to blow up 8 hours in to my ownership I miss that car, 😂
Ben Hull unlucky man😂
Yeah considering it was my second car and I paid alot for it and it only had 21000 miles onit 😂
Hey Sid, great video as always. Please do a review on a mk1 Cupra R, would be great!
Drums? My MK6 118tsi has discs allround
Please improve in car audio mate. 👍😉
The mk6, under the skin, is the *same exact car* as the mk5 with an updated interior, electronics, and a few suspension tuning tweaks.
Love the mk6, being a mk5 owner I do think the mk6 looks abit more special.. however in terms of performance I feel it ain’t special enough. Even in my stage 1 mk5 gti, it’s just too good, it does everything too well. By no means is this a bad thing but it’s just not as fun as they could be
Great vid!
Love love love my M6 Autobahn Edition
My MK6 keeps yelling at me about low oil pressure...pretty sure it’s oil pickup tube
You should review the AW Polo GTI if you haven't already!
Reliable ? Lots of these cars suffered cam chain tensioner failure which equals destroyed engine !
A big downer IMO
And intake manifold failure and water pump
They are reliably unreliable! If you know what to look out for it won't be an issue
Think a BMW 125i would be better? Similar power but rwd
@RichJW an M140i is more expensive though, they're more like an rs3 rival surely
Another great video 👌
Timing chain tensioner…
Yo Sid, my bro... I’m definitely here for the rebrand. But what happened to your hair my guy? Im concerned, where are your friends to tell you it’s looking a bit sideways *no pun intended* shout me though my barber is certified and he’s doing them corona trims.. I got you man
Mk6 > Mk5 all the way. Better ride, lower fuel consumption, nicer interior, better chasis, newer, snappier engine. I drove both, currently I have Mk6 GTI... great all rounder, and yes, it is very quiet for hot hatch... but this can be fixed easily.
@ Mk5 GTI in good condition, low mileage, well maintained, with regular service history is not twice cheaper than same mk6 Gti. Good GTI has decent value.
A full send in all the videos. Yesssir.
Hi sid how would you compare the mk6 gti and mk7 gti with the mk6 and mk7 r. I have been driving the gti models but am not as impressed with them. Haven't driven the r ones yet. Thanks
Not able to disable the esc, the difference when I used to turn off the traction on my Jetta TDI made is dangerous in the wet 😂 newer driver's can't drive cars without assists, if they all tried to drive a mk1 mr2 in the wet around corners it'd make them shit their pants.
Great content mate
Any other mk5 gti owners feeling smug😏
Jonathan Clark ohhhh yeahhhhh
You should like the guy from ffords of winsford when he's describing cars
The problem with the mark 6 Gti is it is not a mark 7 Gti.
love how this is easily top 3 car reviewers on youtube yet he only has 47k subs wtf
