Have been fortunate to see them twice now and their playing is absolutely mind-blowing. The things about bot times that also stood out is how much fun they have together. Next to seeing Rush multiple times I have not seen a more cohesive talented trio (really band) in my life, and this a kinda of a side project. They are individually arguably the best in the world for their respective instrument. Thanks for highlighting such an amazing group. They should be way more popular than they are. You rock Justin as well.
Justin, I love the way you can pick up on the influences that shape the songs. An artist talking about other artists and brining these points to light. Thank you!
Richie is the best rock singer and guitarist going and has been for some time now. He never hits a bad note on guitar and singing. And he's 10x better live too. Nice dude too.
Richie Kotzen can do no wrong in my eyes. What a fantastic talent and thoroughly nice bloke. TWD put on an amazing show and I can't wait to see them rocking again this summer in the UK.
Couldn't agree more. Winery Dogs was the best thing to happen to rock music in years. I will listen to anything Richie puts out, man is an incredible talent.
Saw the band recently in Glasgow, they were absolutely immense, I would encourage anyone with an interest in Rock to go and see them (and I am 70), three of the best musicians around.
Love your channel! Right now, your content is my only source for proper music and check out albums etc. No time to spend time at the record shop or read magazines about bands. Thank you for saving me from the spotify algorithm!
You can feel the joy in creating and performing in all of their music. I've seen them live and same enthusiasm as well as reinterpretation and improvisation of each of their parts without modifying the song beyond recognition
Justin, since you have an "in" with Elizabeth from Charismatic Voice, you should work on her to do a breakdown of Richie Kotzen's vocals...that would be great!
I've gotten to see the Winery Dogs twice live, once a week after their first album came out in a small little club and again after III came out in a theater. Richie Kotzen is the legit real deal and absolutely brilliant guitarist blessed with an amazing voice. Got to see Kotzen on a solo tour in a small club too near where he is from in the Pennsylvania. Everytime he left me just leveled by his performance!!!
Great review once again, Justin. Love it. Funny you mentioned "the Poison guy" when talking bandanas. The reason I started listening to Richie Kotzen was because he joined Poison in 1992 and played on probably their best album "Native Tongue". I think he was kicked out a year later for an affair with the drummers missus. How rock n roll! Regardless, I was then a follower of Richie right through his solo stuff, his stint in Mr. Big, his band Forty Deuce and now Winery Dogs. Met him at a showcase gig for Cornford Amplifiers in Whitstable 20 years ago with Stevie Salas. Really friendly and personable chap. Amazing guitarist and singer to boot. Keep up the great content. Best wishes.
The two last sessions from your palatial retreat have been very good in regard to the songs you chose to react. Enjoy and feel inspired because if the new stuff for the next album is proportional to the good mood that you reflect, it means that we are waiting for very good things. You know that you are always stylish and cute for me. I wish i could see you not in the ice, because i don't like the cold, but on a stage...around Spain.
This has zero to do with this video, but felt compelled to comment anyway. I'm from the States and knew one of your songs- make that LOVED it! I started watching your reactions and realized you were the singer. Since then, I have watched you sing live (recently, too) and, man oh man! You are bloody amazing. You are now in my top male vocalist list. 😅 I love how I can hear your accent on some words (swooning over your accent anyway. I have the Southern Belle accent and want yours) when you sing. Your range is incredible and I hear Freddy Mercury (highest compliment I can give anyone) but also such a distinctive sound of your own. Just wanted to let you know. And we need more rock music like this nowadays. I'm unimpressed by most new music.
Chris Cornell had such a distinct timbre to his voice I didn’t think anyone else would ever sound like him. I’m shocked actually at how close the resemblance is here.
If you ever get the chance to see them live...DO IT! They are truly amazing. Just saw them last week with my 15 yr old grandson. We had a blast watching them, and it was the best concert I've been to since the late 70s.
Simply the best rock band around, and that self-titled record is timeless. It should have won several Grammy's. Man, I'd love to hear you react to their best songs: "I'm No Angel," "Regret," "Criminal," "Time Machine," & "Oblivion."
Love the Winery Dogs. I wish they'd rock out a little harder on their albums, but they're incredible live. Richie Kotzen is a true Renaissance man. He can do, and does do, it all.
@Brendan MacLean Haha, maybe. But they definitely can fire it up more. Aside from certain songs on both records, really, they don't crank it out like the first. I mean, the solos alone from the first record are almost near impossible to learn and he improvised all of them. Nuts.
Hadn’t come across this remarkable band before this review; what a find! Sadly, whilst singing along in the car, I substituted ‘Grapefruit’ for ‘Breakthrough’ and it’s now stuck in my head forever 😢
DAMN!!! He does have Cornell-esque vocals and damn do they sound amazing! The band rocks and collectively sounds outstanding! Going to check out their other stuff! ✌️
All three masters of their instruments, all three add vocals, with Kotzen being off the charts outstanding. So powerful and soulful! And the chemistry between the three of them ... incredible synergy! Then put it into motion with performance, stage presence, with top shelf songwriting! I have been singing the praises of the Winery Dogs since the first album.
So funny that you posted your review the same morning that I said "Holy shit, there's a video for this song!!" I can't agree with you more Justin. These guys are amazing !!! I was lucky to finally see them in March @ the Culture Room (sorry I missed the Darkness there in '22) in Fort Lauderdale and they melted my face off. Richie's voice and guitar, Billy's crazy bass technique and solo, and Mike's groove and style are just off the charts. Straight up kick ass performance !!!! I've been singing their praises for a couple years and trying to turn as many people on to them as I can.
Brutus. Post-Metal act out of Belgium. Power trio, female drummer is lead vocalist. Far and away the best power trio I’ve ever heard. Amazing live too. Check out the album Unison Life, amazing, amazing band
Hey Justin, I know it's a long shot that you see this, but I just want to say that I think you're absolutely wicked, I love The Darkness, love is only a feeling is my favourite song & I listen to your music daily! Love your videos, you rock! All the best.. Rob 🎸 🤘
"And now I'm having a grapefruit!" - I'll be seeing these guys in London next month. Hey Justin, if you like Cornell-esque vocals, check out Big Wreck. Is 'Cornell-esque' a word? Anyway, Ian Thornley is a great vocalist and guitarist. I think they'd be right up your street, since you seem to like great vocals and big riffs combined with good songwriting. Big Wreck has been around since the 90s and their recent material is seriously good. A reaction video to a track like 'Fear And Cowardice' or 'Bombs Away' would be good to see. Love your channel, by the way!
Saw them on Wednesday in LA - third time. They still are amazing. Their sound is huge and the energy is great. They also have a lot of fun on stage together - little jokes between them during songs, seem to be testing each other as well. Compared to other current bands (charging way more for their tickets)I felt like I should have paid more. Worth every $.

One of your funniest videos yet re: the comments. I just watched this on my pad in my local and genuinely larfing out loud to use that hackneyed phrase. More power to your elbow Justin, fuckin luv ya!!
They're all monster players and have amazing pedigree and back catalogues to boot. I had Richie's first ever instructional video for Reh, called Rock Chops when he was really young and still playing Ibanez. Superbly talented and tasteful player.
Those three guys just kill it. And I have been saying that Richie sounds like Chris Cornell for a long time. I'm proud to say that Richie grew up around my area and it turns out that his parents are friends with my in-laws. And I have been a big fan of Mr. Big so I'm a big Billy Sheehan fan. People just don't realize the amount of talent in the Winery Dogs!
With you on *King's X* even though VERY different than Winery Dogs (who I'm just getting into), and to _themselves_ because they are so damn hard to categorize, which is great because they are everything with a Heavy Rock edge (often "Metal") but with 3 part harmonies at times. And Guitarist Ty Tabor has that . . . TONE, no one can duplicate. *Triumph* was another band that had a great sound, and good song writing, and Rik Emmet who could play classical/flamenco intros and then wail on the guitar . . . and had an incredible voice! But . . . as noted, King's X is still around, came out with a awesome album a few months ago, and are touring it! Every album they've put out has its VERY unique moments and style.
@@mvunit3 I found them boring. Some prog rock is boring , later rush, some elp , yes. Love triumph though like purple and rainbow and UFO , zeppelin they also can play anything. But they are not boring. I'll have to give kings x another try.
Am I the only one that stops all these videos to go back and play “I Believe In A Thing Called Love”? And yessss tonight there’s gonna be a jailbreak…. Spot on @JustinHawkinsRidesAgain! 🖤💙🖤💙
Richi Kotzen, in case you never dove into his stuff, Fooled Again or Till you put me down as songs or the whole 24 Hours Album or any other stuff of him, you gonna love it and you also you mentioned THIN LIZZY in this video. Just make a video about them or don't... :P Love to hear your take on them. ONe of the most unknown greatest bands in the world. Big fan of this channel. Cheers.
Funny thing about the Chris Cornell reference is the Winery Dogs backed Tom Morello at a charity benefit for Tony MacAlpine some years ago and they played Cochise by Audioslave with Richie handling vocals on it. Sounded a ton like Chris Cornell
Watching Portnoy play with Transatlantic (another band of virtuosos) I noticed how little grandstanding these guys do. It's there when they need it but it's not in your face. The concert opens with Portnoy on lead vocals which is quite a revelation.
GREAT BAND! Ritchies guitar playing is as you said incredible, always with feel, melody and sits in the song, nothing worse than a solo that feels like it was recorded for something else and dropped in because it was in key but doesn't fit the feel of the song. And the fecker can sing too!!!!! 🙂
I go to a lot of concerts. And no one is as good as these guys live. It is absolutely an incredible experience to watch them live in person. No pyrotechnics, no huge light show, just kick ass rock and roll with actual live playing and singing. It doesn't get any better!!
Halestorm was amazing live, and I really loved seeing Wolf VH touring his first solo album. Both shows were at smallish venues, with good sound. I go to a lot of concerts, too. The sound matters a lot more than the showy stuff like pyrotechnics. Next up: Disturbed. I hope they live up to my expectations, because the venue is not the best for viewing or sound.
Hey Justin - love Love The Dogs but also love a reaction to the Smith/Kotzen collab songs - "Taking My Chances" is surprisingly catchy, heavy, and has some The Darkness in the chorus, too!
I saw them in Greensburg, PA in Feb. 2023. Shortly into the first song, the crowd was on its feet in awe. Like most people watching this, and seeing The Winery Dogs, I've seen most of the top talent out there, Satch, Vai, Hamm, Hedges, Manring, Zakk, Nuno, Tosin, Yngwie, RUSH, etc. This has to be the most musically talented band I've ever seen. If you get the chance, go. You won't be disappointed.
Tons of solid trios in music: Them Crooked Vultures, Muse, Nirvana, Blink 182, and Green Day are just a few (not listed because I love em or anything, haha!). But hey, The Winery Dogs Are good. Dude's voice is awesome, and they've such an interesting sound, like, blended with 70s (80s ballad) rock and late 90s and early 2000s alt rock. Song you picked made me think about Wolfgang's 'Distance.' Makes me also reflect on how we've some uber powerful vocalists out there, not in my favorite 'wheel houses' genre wise, but madly talented (like that dude from Rival Sons).

Richie's ability to shred while singing as well as he does truly is amazing.
I will never be what I was . Nor do I care to be .

It's crazy how 3 virtuosic players can crank out such groovy, accessible music. Love everything I've ever heard from The Winery Dogs.

Next up: Disturbed. I hope they live up to my expectations, because the venue is not the best for viewing or sound.
Hey Justin - love
Love The Dogs but also love a reaction to the Smith/Kotzen collab songs - "Taking My Chances" is surprisingly catchy, heavy, and has some The Darkness in the chorus, too!
I saw them in Knoxville Tennessee. The show was pure brilliance...mjm
Without even watching this video, No there is no trio as good as these rock gods
Christ. Finally!! The Dogs.... Well done, Justin...
Love me some Winery Dogs. I just missed them in Austin...
