- Extreme have returned after 15 years of silence. I was VERY excited when I heard they'd released a new single called Rise, particularly as I am such a huge fan of Nuno Bettencourt. He has to be one of the best guitarist of all time.
Does this song live up to expectations though? You tell me, in the comments.

Nuno is top 3 but NEVER gets mentioned by the music press! 3 Sides is an underrated masterpiece.
Yes my favorite Extreme CD. Around the time it came out & I had it in heavy rotation I said that he out Van Halened Van Halen.
@@realledbetter5015 In my opinion Nuno is a much better songwriter/musician than Eddie Van Halen. Van Halen was one of the fathers of shredding and had huge amount of great rock songs and albums (IMO especially with Sammy Hagar), but I think Nuno is on another level. He had these proggy/jazzy/funky influences that meant his material was more diverse. Of course that also meant his songs were more "difficult" to listen to, and that III Sides ended up not appealing to such a widespread audience, compared to what Van Halen usually did.
I wore a CD player out learning that album.
I have the first 4 albums but life was really busy when the 5th rolled around and I never picked it up, was that one as good? I remember hearing like one song and not feeling the same as the others...??? Figure who better to ask than a true fan.
@@JorgeCanela Hold on there. EVH was the Master of unique riffs that were unlike anyone.
Nuno is great but he will tell you himself that Eddie was the greatest Ever.
Nuno's one of the few players who was heavily influence by EVH, but ultimately created something all his own out of it.
His attack is insane. Just listened to "Waiting for the Punchline" again. Very underrated Album.
I totally agree, I rarely, read/hear WftP get the credit it truly deserves.
Waiting.. is a brilliant album. Shame that Mike Mangini was underused on it. I didn't know who he was but when I saw him live doing the drum solo on that 1995 tour he utterly blew me away. Kevin Figueredo, in comparison is just competent in comparison.
@@andyhinds542 Drummers get the short end of the stick on songwriting credit and publishing royalties. Great drummers(and bass players) are the key to great bands imo. Thank you for the reply.
Everybody goes lyrical over EVH or Malmsteen, or if they wanna be more "tasteful" they say Satriani or Vai...
They ask me who's the best guitar player around, I skip straight and it becomes a simple question; "Nuno or Guthrie? Hmmm... Guthrie can do things with just feeling and sound which are incomparably on point... But then we have Nuno's soloing and cheeky lick capability..."
Extreme's performance at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert was amazing. And touching. It was clearly a labor of love, respect, and homage. It takes some cahones to do that infront of Brian and Roger. I was never a big fan of their music but I hugley respect their talent. They could do pretty much anything.
I don't remember, gonna go watch it.
They blew everyone else away! 🤘🏻
@@tracybosworth1033 I have it downloaded.
Yeah it's the definitive example of how to 'take' a gig 👍🤘
I always thought Gary Cherone should have taken over for Freddie instead of Adam Lambert.
This solo will be remembered for many years.
In my opinion, this will be the new "beat it"
their set at the Freddie tribute concert was epic. one of the highlights of the entire thing. welcome back Extreme !
Agree
I still watch that set often. Epic.
totally agree- thought they stole that show
Hard to believe it was 31 years ago! Numero nuno!
Hear Hear!!
Nuno is great, one of the best for sure. And he is Portuguese! Is about time for The Darkness to come and give a concert in Portugal 🇵🇹💚
I saw Extreme playing in a suburban pub in Vancouver in late 88 or early 89. I could not believe Nuno Bettancourt’s playing of an acoustic guitar. He was sensational. Bob Rock, Jon Sykes and Joe Perry were in the audience … word was out they were about to be the next big thing. Amazing band
When you see a truly talented AND skilled (from untold hours toiling before the metronome!) musician perform in RL, and up close... you realise that you were but a fool to ever fancy yourself a wannabe star! 😅
A FOOL! 👇😅
Musicians can have fun/success locally without making a million dollars, but not needing to either, in order to love performing and writing.
@@huskiefan8950 that s fine..I LOVE playing guitar! By far , my favourite thing on earth..
But kidding myself if I ever think I'm gonna still be a rockstar!
I think I was probably pushing it pretty hard to ever think I could have made it, though I did have half a chance in the 90's when the grunge era allowed for all manner of crappiness!
Possibly.
Just saw Extreme in Glasgow and they absolutely smashed it. Nuno... OMG that man is just amazing live. Never skips a beat 🤘🤘🤘
3 Sides is a a masterpiece album-hard to beat that. But, Extreme is like a wonderful concoction of Queen, Van Halen and Aerosmith. Really, a top 5 all time band for me.
Agreed. The 22 minute finale to that album is a masterpiece.
I used to go to sleep listening to that album every night, had it on cassette tape too lol. It was such an epic album
I place both Extreme 2 and 3 in the list of greatest albums ever recorded. I place 3 just slightly above 2.
Stop the World remains one of my favorite tracks ever
Nuno is an absolute beast
They should have been one of the biggest bands in America. They have the whole package: great front man/vocalist, incredible musicians, really smart songwriting, a unique synthesis of influences, and brilliant live show. I think they were a decade too late. In the 70's, their kind of musical diversity was welcome. I think this album is going to be really good for them, if this single is any indication. I think the world needs a good rock record.
You're right....but we got a ballad as their single, their radio hit......at the time that came out,you had an overload of new music that became "game changers" if u will..91' ..we had metallica, nirvana, pearl jam, Alice in chains, gangster rap starting to take over, etc, all putting out singles/albums that changed mainstream music forever...sadly ,Extreme didn't get what they deserved...yes ," more than words" was a huge song, played constantly on MTV, but if they had chose some of their heavier songs with nunos talent at the forefront, maybe they would've been considered game changers, as well they should...can u believe 2023,all these years later they release a song with great vocals/harmonies and a frigging face melting solo that is being talked about by every guitarist or person who really loves " real" music? It's just awesome....thanks for keeping rock, REAL rock, alive.....
The singer doesn't have the charisma and mystery most lead guys like Staley, Weiland, Chris Cornell etc have. He typically sings at his highest breaking point on almost every song. Becomes annoying from one song to the next. On Extreme 5 - every song is max yelling with bland lyrical content.
Actual quote about band in early 90s: "Nothing Extreme about Extreme's lead singer...He needs MORE THAN WORDS if plans on maintaining success.".
I liked Cherone, but agree w/ people claiming nothing stands out about him, which isn't good for a front man
@@iLanFrid this tells me you haven't listened to an Extreme album.
@@iLanFrid all those lead vocalists are gone. Maybe mystery is overrated. Gary is a consummate pro and the lyrics on III Sides are incredible.
The solo (and guitar tone) for “get the funk out’ remains to this day as the best rock solo and guitar sound of all time (imo).
100% agree
Yep. And I thought it was hilarious when they released it as a single and the radio stations had to decide if they could play it or not. Most did, without even listening to the song, and then got all kinds of angry callers asking why their kids were running around screaming "get the fuck out".
@@wallywest2360 That's fking hilarious 🤣🤣
yes, in your opinion.
@Vi Blu he literally ended the comment by saying "In my opinion"
I love it when people from my generation (Gen X), come back and put on a M'Fing CLINIC showing younger generations the immense power, grace, and sheer beauty of ROCK AND ROLL. This music will never die. Watch and learn - and recognize the absolute brilliance of masters.

You should check out Polyphia who played a "recent" song with Steve Vai.

That solo is insane. Bettencourt is such an underrated gem.
The chorus reminds me of "Tik Tok" by Kesha
I literally cannot get enough of this solo!! It’s eargasmically amazing! 🤘🏻💫
One of my favourite all time bands. Often misunderstood and sadly under rated. Great to see them back at last after 15 years since Saudades! 🤘
Me too. Nuno is also one of my very favourite guitarists. So glad they're back again.
Totally agree. Each album of extreme is great and for those that don’t get it from the first listen. Give it a few listens.for example Waiting for the punchline is raw and different from pornograffiti era
It didn't help them in their overall view when MTV played the living crap out of "Only Words" and people ran out to buy the album only to be assaulted by Nuno's guitar on the remaining tracks... it did help sales though... incredibly great album!
Jesus has it been that long?
Justin, thanks for the great reaction. Huge Nuno and Extreme fan but highlight was your closing story, laughed out loud at my desk at work. Whoops. Saw The Darkness in Minneapolis last year, present for my Daughter's 15th Birthday. Both her and her younger sister loved the show! Been playing them Darkness albums since they were toddlers. Keep doing what you do, world is a bright place with people like you in it!
My all time favourite band!!! They can do no wrong in my eyes! Harmonies are always perfect and Nuno shreds like a demon! Thank you!!!
There is no denying Nuno’s talent, that dude is phenomenal. The whole band sounds so tight and Gary’s voice is absolutely awesome. I’ve been a fan of Extreme since the first album and I can’t wait for the new album to finally come out 😊
Love the fact Extreme has new music coming! Nuno is a beast.
I've seen Extreme live a few times and they always delivered!! So glad to see them back. Nuno makes it look effortlessly fierce!!!
One of the best live shows I’ve ever been to. Nuno is amazing
Nuno has always been one of my 5 favorite guitar players. Incredible talent! Can't wait to hear this album.
Thank you! I've been replaying this since it launched on Wednesday. I've loved Extreme since the beginning. "More than Words" was a song a friend and I would drive around and sing along to at the top of our lungs. She passed away 10 years ago and every time I hear it now it brings a tear then a smile. Nuno's always been incredible and I got to see Gary with VH. So glad they're back!
Whoa, the verse vocal melody and tone remind me heavily of Stone Temple Pilots.
Velvet Revolver
He even moves like Scott W..in this vid
Silvergun Superman that is.
It’s been my first thought as well.
Verse and pre chorus actually.
Great song though.
Not a big fan of the mix myself.
But hey…right about time for a comeback, Gary’s singing better than ever.
And Nuno…come on…🫣🤤
Absolutely. Silver gun super man?
It’s like a tribute to weiland and Nuno has said the whole album is a tribute to EVH
Love seeing Nuno (and Extreme) get the recognition he (they) deserves! Love that you continue to give others props!
Three notes in to More Than Words and I'm immediately transported back to high school. Extreme is so shamefully underrated.
Such and incredible song, Nuno is of another world
I saw Nuno a few times and what impressed me was how effortlessly easy he made it look, one of the few guitarists that can make his guitar sound like it's singing.
Nuno delivers live every single time. The entire band does. I have been blessed with front row 2 out of 3 times I have seen them since 1989 and every position on Nuno's fret is sick!!
Enjoyed this! Absolutely love Extreme. Nuno is such an immensely good musician!
Also I’m a massive fan dude. I remember seeing you guys play Leeds fest on Sunday afternoon when I was like, 15! Best show that weekend. Learned all the songs and solos off permission to land! Love what you do man ❤️
It's so exciting that Extreme are back with new music. They are the most underrated band and amazing live. I saw you support them in 2008, such a great gig! What struck me seeing them live is how damn good Pat Badger is, both on bass and his backing vocals. Nuno is just astonishing! And Gary has the energy of a man half his age (he's around 60 years old). This single is brilliant and I can't wait for the album in June. Thanks for the video Justin.
I was thnking watching this how happy it makes me to watch you react to something you're so passionate about to the point where you were rewinding the solo and reacting to it again. Brilliant. AND THEN you bust out the no sound amp, 'vegan pizza', hotel room story and I am screaming again with laughter. You're such a legend and you crack me up.
I agree. Justin kind of downplays what a legend he is himself. I'd love to see him react to songs that he loves and inspired him along with hearing his stories about starting the darkness and some of the good and bad times he's had over his career.
Just watched their performance at the Freddie tribute concert. It's absolutely amazing. Thank you Justin. Need to explore their back catalogue. Brilliant!!!
You're in for a treat. Indeed, you're in for a number of treats.
Love your show, Justin! You always bring out the positive, and that's such a great thing in these hard times.
Been an Extreme fan since their first album, and this new song is BADASS! Looking forward to hearing the rest of the album!
Was pleasantly suprised when I saw you with Hot Leg supporting Extreme. I couldn't believe I got to see my two favourite guitarists in one gig! So stoked for the new album 🤘
I’ve been a fan of Extreme since day one, they never disappoint, Nuno is a monster player and band and songs are epic, glad to see them back.
Loved Extreme! Got to see them live once, great show.
MAN O MAN… out of this world! So pumped to hear them again! True story, Gary Cherone was my gym teacher in High School. 9th grade 1984. I think they were still called The Dream. 🎸🤘🏻
The whole album is a work of Genius!
I cannot stop listening to it.
From the brilliance of Rise to the techno X Out, through to Beautiful Girls, and finishing on Here's to the Losers.
It's just immense.
A combined Darkness/Extreme tour would be a dream come true! Make it happen Justin!

PS: Nuno is using around 220ms of delay (single repeat) for the percussive hammer on arpeggios near the end of the solo. Good shit!!

THE extremely gorgeous unique Steve Stevens🤩
Oooh...long hair and painted nails! Too much, huh?
Steve Stevens is one of my favourites. Originally found out about him when my old man showed me the Top Gun anthem - then I heard Atomic Playboys and that was one of the songs that inspired me to play guitar a few years back. Now I can play it too, not as well as Steve, but I’m always improving 😂
