1Deminator So? He still sells out venues. Sure he's independent, but he's still making tons of money, and his videos are still getting millions of views. If you're an OF fan, don't hold a grudge because of the Tyler diss.
***** Naw I actually like Hopsin and couldn't care less about his Tyler diss. I just mean in comparison to the other dudes on the list like Macklemore, Iggy, Danny Brown, etc. He didnt really reach the heights that people thought he would at the time.
Sometimes when I watch these videos, I find myself randomly shouting out my own opinions at everybody in the video and insulting them when they speak over me. I need help, man.
Kid Ink hasnt been in the game for a while, its only been about 2 years, but its what hes done that got him in. the 3 mixtapes he made before the list was announced got his name out and made him as big as he is now
@buddy1v I know he's been out there but he doesn't get that much support from what I've seen. As I said in the video, maybe it's in places I don't pay attention to.
I think that at the end of the day each year XXL has to put out the freshmen list because it's expected. But really with new guys poppin' up daily and creating a buzz online or in their respective cities its next to impossible to nail down who is going to blow. A few years back it was stuff like "Ok this is the new crop signed to majors so they are the next ones" but now with people Like Mac Miller outselling majors there's no definite gauge for a freshman class anymore. It's up for grabs daily.
the reason i give a shit about it, personally, is because to me the list serves as the next up, the next to go big. i think certain artists are more deserving of the hype that comes with getting on the list. that's the frustration.
For the record I was 100% wrong about Don Trip. I went to UA-cam and listened to about 3 songs and didn't like what I heard in the least. But I've listened to the songs you guys have told me to and I really really like them. So my sincere apologies to Don Trip if you happen to see this and to his fans. I was incorrect. Still stick by my statement about the buzz, but I like his music.
I agree with a lot of what u guys say but I actually can see why Hopsin is on it. Most of his buzz is from 2011. Music videos going into 2011, his first big tour, his big collab on am I a psycho? with Tech N9ne(now in the top 10 on 106), Tyler diss video with about 8 million views. Hopsin's buzz is through the roof right now.
I think people more get mad bc we've been standing behind someone for years and something like this can really help them out. Someone like XV shoulda def been on for the past couple. I thought this was the year cuz he signed wit Warner and Zero Heroes went crazy. the list wit J. Cole was still dope to me
@Kingemedia i sorta see what your talking about but from all the collabs hes done with many artists and producers and the fact that hes signed by DJ Ill Will makes him buzz worthy also i know hes not really lyrical but to every one he hits the same categores that a person who likes wiz and tyga hits
Don Trip was a dude who literally did tracks on his youtube channel and then he blew up off of that. Then David Banner started working with him and other known names like Cee-Lo green etc. So I seen his start so to speak up until now but you cant be biased with a list like this, you havent really heard people talkin about him.
you know I posted that literally a year ago. And both of those are amazing verses/songs. Some other great verses of his are the verse on Liquid Assassin's Beast Mode, and his verse on Funk Volume 2012 is also amazing. I had just said Ill Mind of Hopsin 5 because the track had just dropped.
@dranged thanks for responding! but unfortunately i don't think i can go because i live in florida and the show is in buffalo and my sister's birthday is the 14th of june and the show is the 12th. i will still consider it though because its tech.
@MrSnotyear he never dropped an album so they classified him as a freshman and the label he was on before never promoted him but he had a huge buzz in ny
@kpanton2 I'm talking about all the people on different blogs and sites, in the comment section there was a ton of people who complained about Macklemore being on the list, mostly because they haven't heard of him, which is a stupid reason to complain in the first place.
That's because they've never been exposed to Hip-Hop Beef. If you're a fan or real Hip-Hop you'd know that beef has no effect on you listening to them and it doesn't last forever.
idk how you guys are saying kid ink has no buzz when everyone in the high schools bump him and hes been putting out mixtapes and doing collaborations do your research and hes been out there for awhile
These lists are made to be self fulfilling prophecies. I think they pick artists that they think will have records coming out in the next year or so that will sell well with others to fill a predetermined quota. C-Town preaches Gospel from 16:18 to 17:00.
@mykectown Did u notice how MGK kinda sounds like a bootleg Copywrite (aside from Yela) when he double times? That's the first thing that came to mind when I was introduced to his material a cpl years back.
how do u guys think the previous list to be flops when u guys love kendrick and krit an that was last year. 2. This years list is weak roscoe been out for years, don trip has 1 good song "letter to my son" I think u guys will like it. As an unsigned artist I think u should care because its great promo BUT people have got on without it. XXL went from being a respectful mag to a mag that revolves around what label paid the most to have their artist featured shoutout to feefo with the Candyman hood
This is fucking gold. You guys start off "Who the fuck cares about the list? Why get mad over it?" Cut to the sneak peak. "NO IT'S NOT AN IRRELEVANT POINT. ALRIGHT SO WHY- NONONONONONONO" lmfao.
I think artists and people care about the freshmen list because it's fun to see what ends up happening with these artist's careers. Sort of like the NBA draft. Previous freshmen like Lupe, B.o.B, Kid Cudi, and Wale went on to become mainstream rappers while guys like Cory Gunz, Papoose, Gorilla Zoe, Charles Hamilton were busts.
yea i never understood how XXL does the freshman list either. XV has had a buzz for nearly 3 years already and they still left him off the list. Macklemore getting on is a good look for the underground artists.
I heard that they offered it to tyler the creator too, but that was like last year, and he turned it down because they only wanted him, and he wanted all of OF
Crazy your keeping French and not Hop on your list ! And I'm not saying that just from a who's more lyrical standpoint. I guess yu just weren't following his buzz, cuz he blew up like I haven't seen a rapper blow up in a while. After he released the Ill Mind video, all his music videos starting climbing to the millions. His fan base got huge in just a few months.
It's really cool coming back to these and seeing which of XXL's freshmen really went anywhere.
I agree man lmao
***** Hopsin
***** He went nowhere lol he's still independent.
1Deminator So? He still sells out venues. Sure he's independent, but he's still making tons of money, and his videos are still getting millions of views. If you're an OF fan, don't hold a grudge because of the Tyler diss.

Hahah Myke was so wrong about Iggy!
He sure was
*Izzy.
Sometimes when I watch these videos, I find myself randomly shouting out my own opinions at everybody in the video and insulting them when they speak over me.
I need help, man.
The silver lining of the list is that Danny Brown is getting some props finally.
@Kingemedia Thank you, I really appreciate you guys takin' time to answer viewer questions. The connection is awesome.
@MrEternity1 The blog is on the website. We're working on keeping it updated a little more consistently.
lol mike's swaggy dance hahah "that's all i got"
damn ken be fighting with everybody now
I love when Myke says "Well I don't want to say '___________'" when in all reality that's exactly what he wants to say, lmao.
when he slammed his cup I almost died
I laughed way too hard at 18:21 lmao
I havent bought a XXL since High School...thats been 10 years.
As I said in the video, maybe it's in places I don't pay attention to.
haywire came out in 2009 lol

@mykectown impersonating Kinge always cracks me up. "When is it stealing? At what point is it stealing?"
the reason i give a shit about it, personally, is because to me the list serves as the next up, the next to go big. i think certain artists are more deserving of the hype that comes with getting on the list. that's the frustration.

you guys know your shit...by far the best review ive seen about this list
@veryspecialgfx Oh yeah! A long time ago, right? I kinda remember that.
The Don Trip song was "Letter to my Son"
actually in fairness i gotta admit alot of the artists on that list gained alot of popularity throughout 2012 wich suprised me
I think people more get mad bc we've been standing behind someone for years and something like this can really help them out. Someone like XV shoulda def been on for the past couple. I thought this was the year cuz he signed wit Warner and Zero Heroes went crazy. the list wit J. Cole was still dope to me
when I read that, I'm thinking at first, yeah I think I can understand that then I thought for a second, and now i'm like WHAT??? lol
@Kingemedia i sorta see what your talking about but from all the collabs hes done with many artists and producers and the fact that hes signed by DJ Ill Will makes him buzz worthy also i know hes not really lyrical but to every one he hits the same categores that a person who likes wiz and tyga hits
@KingARSENAL14 Just listened to it. I like it. But I'd never heard of him before they made me do this goddamn convo.
Don Trip was a dude who literally did tracks on his youtube channel and then he blew up off of that. Then David Banner started working with him and other known names like Cee-Lo green etc. So I seen his start so to speak up until now but you cant be biased with a list like this, you havent really heard people talkin about him.
myke c town predicted maclemores rise to fame cus this vid was in may for the next months thrift shop and cant hold us became HUGE
@mykectown hahaha well played. I hope you guys can review hosin's new project and the OF tape when they come out
XXL 2009 Cover was DOPE!!! They'll NEVER top that one
MGK had a huge fanbase in Ohio before he blew up. He was a lot better underground.
you know I posted that literally a year ago. And both of those are amazing verses/songs. Some other great verses of his are the verse on Liquid Assassin's Beast Mode, and his verse on Funk Volume 2012 is also amazing. I had just said Ill Mind of Hopsin 5 because the track had just dropped.
@ltron00 thanks, i was only skeptical because of mgk, but if i can i'm going to try and go.
@Eziokilla9595 Really? Like who else? I'm missing something.
@dranged thanks for responding! but unfortunately i don't think i can go because i live in florida and the show is in buffalo and my sister's birthday is the 14th of june and the show is the 12th. i will still consider it though because its tech.
Tune in for more spine tingling adventures
@MrSnotyear he never dropped an album so they classified him as a freshman and the label he was on before never promoted him but he had a huge buzz in ny
@VividtheDreamer I tried to tell you guys it wasn't me!
don trip is actually nice and the breakout single was "letter to my son"
lol "Who is Don Trip?" lmao
And Don Trip's most popular single last year was "Letter to my Son" featuring Cee-Lo.
It's a crime against humanity that XXL did not include Action Bronson, Das Racist, or Death Grips.
@kpanton2 I'm talking about all the people on different blogs and sites, in the comment section there was a ton of people who complained about Macklemore being on the list, mostly because they haven't heard of him, which is a stupid reason to complain in the first place.
@Eziokilla9595 oh, don't worry it was meant to come out 8th of march but it got pushed back
@Goofle11 Nah, it's an old Bjork shirt.
The only thing i'm interested in with this XXL freshman list is the cypher (if they do one). Specially with Danny Brown
@mpchead621 I agree. It's fun every now and then to argue but I do like when I get introduced to great music that I would have otherwise overlooked.
XXL Mag is the #1 selling hip hop magazine right now, what do you mean its just a list?
pause at 10:12 for a great thumbnail lol, love you c-town! :)
That's because they've never been exposed to Hip-Hop Beef. If you're a fan or real Hip-Hop you'd know that beef has no effect on you listening to them and it doesn't last forever.
do you guys have your own blog? I think you should. You all seem to be very knowledgable and have good music taste.
@Bankallday I swear I don't start it either. I think they do this on purpose.
@TheSoleCollector23 Next week! We shooting Saturday.
idk how you guys are saying kid ink has no buzz when everyone in the high schools bump him and hes been putting out mixtapes and doing collaborations do your research and hes been out there for awhile

if u have siriusXM you would know that shot caller comes on Shade45 and HipHopNation about 20 times a day
Myke, is that an edIT t-shirt? ("Crying Over Pros For No Reason" album cover?)
Not true XXL allowed people to vote for one person on the list, on this list they claimed that Iggy won the fan vote
@HugeKid81 Gibbs was a XXL freshmen a few years back.
2. @leilamaliki1
Well Tech also has 4 dates scheduled in FL. too man.
Earl was nominated and his album came out in 2010
Everyone on the list have been around for years, that's how they pick the people on the list
@The12Jacob Yeah, actually I just saw your comment on the 2Pac vs. Nas video. You and TheColorfulCube are the ones I see the most.
@genbukai123456789 i guess it slipped their minds or didn't mention him because they were disappointed with his Shady album
@222Sucram yeah they are. they said they would on their website
it amazes me that people still look to XXL for their music opinions.
This is fucking gold. You guys start off "Who the fuck cares about the list? Why get mad over it?" Cut to the sneak peak. "NO IT'S NOT AN IRRELEVANT POINT. ALRIGHT SO WHY- NONONONONONONO" lmfao.

Am I the only person surprised Feefo isn't a fan French Montana? His music does "bump in the whip".
hopsoin's new "ILL MIND" series is huge now
@bg094 Why?
Danny and Hopsin are the only ones I care about they are the only lyrical rappers with actual things to say
2 chainz had a project: codeine cowboyz....
Go to Worldstarhiphop. They have a video with the makers of the list of the criterias.
yea i never understood how XXL does the freshman list either. XV has had a buzz for nearly 3 years already and they still left him off the list. Macklemore getting on is a good look for the underground artists.
hopsin is the only rapper this year that i'm excited for
Myke killed me when he went, "MAN WHAT THE FUCK!??!?!?!?!? KID INK!!!! KID INK!!!! DIS SUM BULLSHIT THO!!!!"
@The12Jacob Ok, let me rephrase this: Dash is a hooksman like Cudi. The difference is that Cudi can hold down an album harder than Dash.
Where on the list is Wax? He should of been on the list.
Dude said XXL isn't a mainstream magazine...wtf?!?!
anyone thinking logic should have been on one of the lists either this one or the last one ?
Please talk about this year's list!!!!!!!!!
Kid Ink put out 3 mixtapes last year so i could deffinatly see why hes on the list
I heard that they offered it to tyler the creator too, but that was like last year, and he turned it down because they only wanted him, and he wanted all of OF
Hopsin blew up because of "Ill Mind Of Hopsin 4' and The "Am I A Psycho" Music Video with Tech N9ne and B.o.B.
Do you really need XXL to tell you who is currently good?
You guys should do more reviews on the guys you actually dig, and are dope to you's...
how could they not have heard letter to my son smh
@a8fine1youngSchapT Oh Lord. Youngsters, would this be considered "hating?"
@Luchini16 It got cut out. I mentioned it.
His fan base got huge in just a few months.
twitter followers make for a good BUZZ, which is the topic of conversation correct?
@lemonlimelukey I can't remember.
@Jewnboy This would be considered "trolling", my friend.
Cosign @Luchini16. 2 Chainz dropped Tru Realigion last year. It was somewhat hot, at least in the south.
you guys should review crooked I psalm 82:6 came out today.
