I saw an interview the other day and the band said when they opened up for Led Zeppelin in '69/70 that Zeppelin's manager unplugged the power when they were on stage because the crowd was getting too excited. Terry knight (the manager of GFRR) went on stage to tell the crowd that they had just been kicked off the stage - and the crowd started rioting. That's how powerful these guys were back in the day.

A three man band in 1969 doing that ???? Absolutely incredible !!!
They put the funk in funk !!!!

IMO, this is the greatest song GFR ever performed ! Thanks for featuring it !

Mark Farner...one of the most musically gifted performers to ever walk on a stage anywhere in the world...lead vocals, lead guitar, keyboards, drums, harmonica, and all at a very high level...and he wrote 90 % of the songs for GFR. Every song played at Shea stadium by Grand Funk was written by Mark Farner. Unbelievably talented man...

In the early days, these guys were so hard, they even blew big acts like Zep off the stage. The Power of Funk!

Agreed. The musicianship is nothing more than average, at best. However, they more than make up for that with their heart, and grit. This is all about having a good time, and boy howdy, they deliver!

Welcome to the Railroad, brother! These guys have been my all-time favorite band since I was 14 and I'm 64 now. I never get tired of hearing or seeing these guys and I wish they were still around as the original Grand Funk Railroad. It's an absolute crime that they are not inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That institution is totally political and I don't recognize them as the true Authority of rock and roll. Keep it "Shinin' On", baby! Another fantastic song by them. Please check it out.

Dude, I said the same exact thing about being the greatest performance I've ever seen! I was totally blown away when I first saw it! The most amazing thing is that the guitar player and the drummer are 21 years old and the bassist is 18 years old at the time of this video! I saw a lower talking about better bands today, not even close.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I knew this was one you would love. The stank face, the toothpick, letting it play the whole way through with no pause. The influence they had on all the bands that followed them is part of rock history and yet they can’t get elected into the R&R Hall of Fame. Plenty more of their catalogue to pick from. Next suggestion would be Heartbreaker.

I Am A 57 Year Old Black Man I Grew Up In The 60's Listening To BB King, Booker T & The MG's, Motown, Earth Wind & Fire, The Isley Brothers, Chaka Khan, Carole King, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple And On And On.
Brother Do Yourself A Favor And Listen To The STUDIO VERSION Of This Song The Guitar Solo Stands Out More As It Is More Clear And Crisp Along With The Bass And Drums.
For Me And My 2 Brothers Grand Funk Railroad Were The Earth Wind & Fire Of Rock Music.
My Oldest Brother Saw Them In Concert In Their Prime And He Told Me That In Addition To His White Man Afro The Drummer Don Brewer Would Also Wear African Dashikis.
In An Interview Don Brewer Said The Band Was Heavily Influenced By Wilson Pickett, Motown etc.
Don Brewer Was One Of 3(THREE) Drummers That I'm Aware Of (BUDDY MILES & PETER RIVERA of RARE EARTH are The Other 2)
Who Could Play The Drums And Sing At The Same Time Very Difficult To Do( And Yet JOHN BONHAM Is Widely Regarded As The Best Drummer Of All Time I Question That)
No Matter What Song From What Group You Want To React To Always Listen To The STUDIO VERSION First.
Other Songs From Grand Funk Railroad I Would Recommend For You To React To Are:
    THE RAILROAD
    FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX
    SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL
    PEOPLE LET'S STOP THE WAR
    LONELIEST RIDER.
Whenever Any Public Figure Or In The Case Of Grand Funk Railroad A Music Group Speaks Out Against The Government, People In Power Then You Run The Risk Of Being Ostracized For Doing So.
If You Listen Closely To The Lyrics Of PEOPLE LET'S STOP THE WAR & LONLIEST RIDER You'll Understand What I Mean.
In My Opinion These 2 Songs Are Why Grand Funk Railroad Is Not In the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

Thanks for your comment, brother!...I needed to read something like that on behalf of, imho, the greatest band ever to hail from this side of the pond, in a time when the British invasion was setting the standards for r&r, and folks wouldn't even pay mind to some guy named Jimi Hendrix, who eventually had to go to England to make himself listened to and respected and revered by his peers....
I'm so glad you said what you said about bands like Rare Earth (one of my all times faves too) and drummers like buddy miles, who by the way, you cite as the perfect example for a singing drummer, specially when it comes to, imho again, the best album I recall of Jimi Hendrix, with the Band Of Gypsies....Thank you again, bro...you sure bring back memories...Grand Funk sure brings back memories...from times long gone, but never forgotten...

I was in high school when Grand Funk hit the scene and their early albums were constantly on my turntable. I'm so glad that this video was shot with such quality and fidelity. It captures that time as well as anything I've seen on the 'Tube. Great performance by an unheralded and mostly forgotten trio of boys from Flint, MI. The guitarist, Mark Farner, also played organ on the early LPs. Lots of talent rolled up into three guys! Thanks so much for reacting to this!

They usually played this for 15 minutes at live concerts. They have a huge amount of great songs, live especially so. They don't have FUNK in their name for nothing!! You will hear lots of great music and funky sounds when you check out more Grand Funk Railroad. I recommend another video, T.N.U.C. live from 1974. Wait til you see the drummer's afro in that video! LOL And the drum solo I think will leave your jaw on the floor. They are a fantastic band and I will be looking forward to more of your reactions to GFR man!

saw them live in the 70s, they played like this all the time. They were great performers with a lot of skill. Mark wrote, sang, played several instruments. Watch the live Heartbreaker, I'm your Captain, Footstompin Music, they added another member. They sold out shea stadium faster than the beatles. They were the opening for Led Zepplin and their manager kicked them off the stage so they wouldn't out perform his band. They were very popular, I think because most of their songs were long they didn't get a lot of play time on the standard radio stations

A time when music just reached right inside.
I was a child in the 60's and heard music like this daily.
My mother was very open minded and loved Blues, Hard and Soft rock,
and Gospel. My brother is 12 years my senior and part of the hippie generation.
There was no time when my mom wasn't dancing around the house with the radio
going, or my brother playing guitar hooked up to the amps and blasting his stereo.
This is not to cause a dispute but I miss this music.
I reach as far back to Howling Wolf, Elvis and go from there up until about U2.
Most (not all) music that came out after those years didn't move the same way.

Great version but there is another one out the on youtube, the video has kind of a yellowish tint to it. The part where Frank starts laying it down and doing his sideways dance while playing is pretty cool too. Both are great. GFR is badass. I bet the studio version when driving in your car would pick up the bass better and you get to hear them all in sync but I am not complaining at all. I had to watch this 3 times in a row. Good job Drama and thanks.

The good ole stankface! lol. The moments when you know a jam hits the soul and spirit so much and there is nothing left to do, but look as if something stunk in funk!

I had to wait 50 years to see this "live". It hit me just like it hit you.
Then I learned that GFR is Not in the R&R HOF. Truth is stranger than fiction.

Great, great reaction. This brings back some pretty grand memories thank you very much. They were such a fantastic band and get too little recognition. You have had an awesome lineup today, I feel like you are pulling right from my playlist. Check out Heartbreaker.

Man, you always start you reaction/review with thanking new and us old subscribers. I want to thank you for bringing some of the best performances, skilled musicians and the ultimate in skank faces. When you started grooving to a song, I know your facial expressions are coming to say what you're feeling. The speak louder than words...my brother from another mother, don't let up. I hope everyone is telling people about your channel. You are real! No bullshit, just your analysis in your words!!

Saw them in 70 and 71 and they rate #2 after Zep. You have no idea what you'll discover about their music.

Wow. I'm just blown away by this song and this video. If you haven't already reacted to it, there's a song by the Edgar Winter Band called Tobacco Road. It's from 1970. The drummer in Grand Funk sounds a bit like the vocalist on Tobacco Road and it's more of the same raw rock and roll that Grand Funk has just treated us to in this video. You might enjoy it too.

Mark Farmer was a beast. First five albums he wrote 90% of the songs, played bass, keyboards, guitar, harp, lead vocals and party master. But the entire band had talent out the kazoo. They gang-raped your ears and left you in a heap gasping for air.
