Grand funk are undoubtedly America's most underrated rock act. They are so damn good it's ridiculous but they don't get nearly the respect that they deserve.
I think it's because of their limited song list on radio. I recall when classic rock really became popular in the 80's and beyond, and even the best stations only played We're An American Band, Some Kind of Wonderful, and I'm Your Captain. Over and over. So much has never been heard - that is, until streaming music came to be and many have become aware of what was missed. LOTS of B-side songs that make this band special to GFR fans.

I am so pleased that young people are listening to this great old music. Grand Funk was doing things in the 60's that led Zeppelin did in the 70's. Love that mix of Blues, soul and funk!
I grew up just a couple miles from Mark's family home and went to school with Mark's younger brother Eric. One time when I was at their family home for a visit Mark happened to be there visiting his family - I remember Terry Knight the manager of Grand Funk Railroad came into the house with a briefcase - I suppose it was legal documents. I'll never forget that. Growing up in the Flint area Grand Funk Railroad helped me to make the connection with Soul, R&B, Rock & Roll as a young teenager. Michigan brewed some really fine musical talent during the 60s and early 70s. Thank you for doing this review and reaction.
Bruh, with a name like Grand "FUNK" Railroad, are you really that surprised... Man the 70's had it all. Funk, Rock, Soul, Blues, R&B fo yo ass like no other era. Long live and Love 70's music, forever. We had the best.

Oh Jamel! I love your reaction to this. I am 66 year old lady who rocked out to GFR while in high school. So much outstanding music then. I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel. You are a delight!
This is such an iconic song from my generation. The music part of it will give you a goosers all over. You mix in the lyrics and the story. One and done. The extended was I do believe he is either coming home from a fishing expedition or on the other side, maybe coming home from war. With each and every day "they all" have thier own dreams and hope of going home.
This is the first time I've ever heard this, and I've been a classic rock fan for 30+ years. This is the kind of song you need a whiskey and a cigarette *after* listening to it. Just to wind yourself down...
I thought I knew enough Grand Funk to say I liked them. Like you, this is my first time hearing this song and holy Crap! That was some seriously good ear candy!!
I must admit that watch your reaction to this video at least 3 times a week . Brother you are feeling the power and soul that I felt back in back 1969. I introduced my entire neighborhood to GFR. Music was meant to played loud

Great reaction Jamel!! My face hurts from smiling. Yes!! Mark Farner (lead singer) does do it all. He plays guitar, harmonica, keyboards, bass, and a little drums. He was a good football player too and won dance competitions when he was a teenager. 👍🏻
I think it was Absolutely Perfection. Grand Funk Railroad Inside Looking Out Live. I would have love to see them at the time, but I was too young to go to concerts. All my Cousins and Uncles used to blast this song back in the day and would tell us young kids to go outside. We knew what they were doing, getting high as a Kite. Now I am 67 years old and still listen to this song. What you call ROCK and SOUL. Perfection at its finest. AMEN!!!
This to me is your best reaction and you have got some funky moves !!!! GFR put the funk in rock and roll and you were definitely feeling the funk !!!!! Thanks so much.
This performance is, without a doubt, the most intense, passionate, physical performance I have ever seen. And to top it off, Mark Farner played the harmonica. He could play numerous instruments: guitar, keyboards, harmonica, etc. AND he just dripped sexuality in this performance. If I had been at this performance, I would have been standing, jumping up and down, dancing, etc. Even just watching the video, I find myself dancing in my seat! I was a young girl when Grand Funk Railroad was played on the radio, but I had NEVER heard or seen this song/video before about a month ago. So I can say with confidence that I will die before I ever see a performance that equals this one.
1971 i eagerly put down the vinyl of my newly purchased album, cranked up the volume, set down the needle, and blew out the windows of my bedroom with this group....I became addicted.
I had a friend once that came to see me on New Years Eve to thank me for playing this song for him for the first time. He said it was one of the top moments of his year.
This performance was recorded in Hershey, PA at the Hershey Community Center by WITF-TV channel 33 (PBS station) in 1969 for their show titled "The Show". There were only a few handfuls of people watching it live.
I watch this reaction frequently cause it’s the absolute best! Stank face Maximus 🤣 GFR were one of the greatest and wish like hell I could have seen them preform this live. Just too great for words.
They played 26 miles outside Atlanta, Georgia. They were so loud that they could be heard in the city. At that time 1969 I believe....it was the loudest concert ever recorded.
Raymond, I was on vacation with my mom & dad we were in Atlanta & we went to a Braves game that night, we heard a crowd roarin' in the distance, didn't know why at the time. Some years later I bought the live album & put 2& 2 together, it was GFR tearin' the place up! By the way I was 11 at the time, also I am from Palestine Texas, lived here all my life. God bless Grand Funk Railroad!
I grew up in Saginaw Michigan. And,every now and again. Grand Funk Railroad would show up at our neighbors, Phil Taylor's house. Set up in the Garage. And, JAM!!! That is the Band I listened to when I was a Kid. They came out of Flit Michigan, just 30 minutes away from my house.... I moved to Alaska in 1979...
Grand Funk Railroad is hard driving rock! They add the "funk and soul" to everything. This is by far one of the greatest jams any band has done. A true American band!!
my mom's friend gave the grand funk live album when i was in the 5th grade and as i ran down to the basement to play it on my record player one of the records fell out and broke a huge chunk out of the record making it unplayable. so i never heard this until i saw the album in a record store 30 yrs later and bought it. when i got home and played this song I jumped with excitement and started laughing. i was so blown away by this song which actually a cover of eric burden & the animals. best cover of all time in my opinion. sounds amazing on vinyl too
A lot of folks miss his casual drug reference in the first verse. The Animals original lyric was "Work all day, making up them burlap bags." GFR changed it to: "nickle bags", in a nod to how we used to buy our weed--in foil packs in $5 increments. That's just in case you missed his lyric: "Be my reefer!" I went to an all-Black high school and we separated into to cliques: "cooties" and "hippies". Cooties listened to soul and wore polyester slacks; hippies listened to rock and sported bell-bottom jeans with patches over the worn parts. The hippies were all in with Grand Funk!
He needs to listen to the album “ caught in the act “ in my opinion GFR was the best rock & blues band and Mark one of the best if not the best . Has to be one of the best concerts I have been to even on their reunion they kicked ass , so many years ago.
GRAND FUNK RAILROAD wanted to tour with The Stones but was turned down. That will show you they was good enough to do a show with anybody at that time. They just had to much energy and if you were a headliner band you did not want GFR on the same show with you.
Grand Funk was my all time favorite 70’s Band and they had a cult following who recognized their unique talent and they were soon forgotten by all but there true fans! They also were a band with a message. Best Albums were, We are an American Band and The Flight of the Phoenix
I have been a big fan of Grand Funk since I first heard them back in the early 70's this song still gives me goosebumps to this day. They were so heavy for the times. Best music ever.
Ladies and Gentlemen...this was the First time I've ever Heard this song. And I got to experience it as an epic live performance, Right Here on This youtube channel on the 4th day of 2020. Man.... I give Thanks & Praises to those who suggested this jam, and to this awesome dude for doing a reaction video to it. With your powers combined, you have opened a new dimension of great classic rock to this mere mortal.
Watching this in March 2022. I have seen this GFR video dozens and dozens of times and I can never see it enough. It is...IMHO...the GREATEST LIVE PERFORMANCE OF ALL TIME!!!!
MARK GOT SCREWED BY HIS BAND MATES WHEN HALF DRUNK AND SIGNED PAPERS GIVING BAND CONTROL AND THE NAME TO THEM. SO IF YOU WANT TO SEE MARK, THE WRITER, SONG MEISTER, GUITAR PLAYER, SINGER, YOU WILL HAVE TO LOOK UP HIS NAME MARK FARNER TO SEE HIM. NOT GRAND FUNK.
I just saw Mark Farner and his band a couple of months ago and all I could think of was how can they can keep sound so awesome all this years after. One of my faves. Pd: sorry for the english.
Yes, Grand Funk RR was a fantastic rock band playin' the Blues. They never got the respect they deserved. 9 platinum albums tell you what their fans thought of them while the rock media (Rolling Stone mag etc) looked down their nose.
Man...I just have to say...out of all the "reaction" channels...i really enjoy yours the most. I love seeing you discover the music I grew up with and truly enjoy new styles. Rock on brother !
I grew up In a predominately black neighborhood. A neighbor and friend opened for Ray Charles alone playing his incredible trumpet. Phil you are an awesome dude. I grew up hearing all kinds of blues soul and FUNK!!!! Parliament George was the man!!!
Just 3 guys. Just 3. They're still the greatest. Now listen to "people let's stop the war" & "mean mistreater" by the FUNK. Prepare to have mind blown again.
This was a weekend staple for me and my buddies in high school. We had this on 8-track, a 12 pack of beer, a rural Texas two lane blacktop at warp 6 and a large time was had by all!
When I was 14 years old back in 1969 I was starting to get into my favorite bands and I started out with three dog night and then went to Grand Funk Railroad. As a younger child everyone was listening to the Beatles.
I'm an old Grandpa, and this is the sound of my generation. We rocked. We rolled. We raised hell. We had soul.

Roger that!

Especially when they pair up with Bloodrock.

The few times I saw them in concert, they were usually the openers for a bigger act, like Led Zeppelin. But they always stole the show.
Don Brewer is one of the most underrated drummers of all time!!
That drummer locks it in for me. He's back up singing (killin it), anchoring some serious funk, and hypin' the band the whole time! I love it.

Hard to believe this was 50 years ago huh? They were way ahead of their time...
@83706Rachel LOL!
I got a few years on ya and yeah, hell yeah they flew by. Feels like my 20s was just last year.
@83706Rachel Mark Farney looks good for his age. just saw an interview with him
Awesome band a get down rock n roll party band. Great to see these videos, awesome tune....
It's SO good, that a strong argument can be made for it representing our modern era's version of Classical Music.
They weren't ahead of their time; they were right in tune with their time. Mark and Don modeled GFR after Cream and Hendrix---a power trio.
AMEN!!!
They are from my hometown. We watched them practice in someone's garage, way back in the day. East side of Flint, Michigan.
This to me is your best reaction and you have got some funky moves !!!! GFR put the funk in rock and roll and you were definitely feeling the funk !!!!! Thanks so much.
THIS is one of the finest live performances ever~
You're reaction was the best I've seen in a long time! You were totally into it. You were GONE!!
This is absolutely my favorite song to watch people react to.
They played 26 miles outside Atlanta, Georgia. They were so loud that they could be heard in the city. At that time 1969 I believe....it was the loudest concert ever recorded.
I saw them in Seattle back in the day, took 3 days for my ears to recover!
@@jayjames7491 ....Hey Man.....thanks for this. Those guys could rock. Probably one of the best three piece bands ever. That’s a great memory to have.
let's do'it again!
@@jayjames7491 I have relatives from Palestine and Brushy Creek, the Elrod family
Wow! You got Grand Funk, Jamel, you are the greatest among Rock 'N Roll historians.
Grand Funk Railroad is hard driving rock! They add the "funk and soul" to everything. This is by far one of the greatest jams any band has done. A true American band!!
my mom's friend gave the grand funk live album when i was in the 5th grade and as i ran down to the basement to play it on my record player one of the records fell out and broke a huge chunk out of the record making it unplayable. so i never heard this until i saw the album in a record store 30 yrs later and bought it. when i got home and played this song I jumped with excitement and started laughing. i was so blown away by this song which actually a cover of eric burden & the animals. best cover of all time in my opinion. sounds amazing on vinyl too
Jamel_AKA_Jamal: Thanks for giving new life to these old songs. Can't believe it's been 50 years.
A lot of folks miss his casual drug reference in the first verse. The Animals original lyric was "Work all day, making up them burlap bags." GFR changed it to: "nickle bags", in a nod to how we used to buy our weed--in foil packs in $5 increments. That's just in case you missed his lyric: "Be my reefer!"
I went to an all-Black high school and we separated into to cliques: "cooties" and "hippies". Cooties listened to soul and wore polyester slacks; hippies listened to rock and sported bell-bottom jeans with patches over the worn parts. The hippies were all in with Grand Funk!
This is my father’s favorite band. They have a freakin great catalogue. Mark, Mel and Don baby. Check out Foot Stompin Music!!
He needs to listen to the album “ caught in the act “ in my opinion GFR was the best rock & blues band and Mark one of the best if not the best . Has to be one of the best concerts I have been to even on their reunion they kicked ass , so many years ago.
Everyone says the Rolling Stones are the best garage band in the world, I beg to differ. Grand Funk!
Agree, by far!
Yes, the Stones are great,
BUT!!! GRAND FUNK RAILROAD IS THE BEST EVER!!!
GRAND FUNK RAILROAD wanted to tour with The Stones but was turned down. That will show you they was good enough to do a show with anybody at that time. They just had to much energy and if you were a headliner band you did not want GFR on the same show with you.
Hands down!!
The Stones music for the most part is very dated in its sound. Not GFRR. They still sound as good as ever.
Mark Farner had Soul locked down, for sure! I loved all their albums.
Grand Funk was my all time favorite 70’s Band and they had a cult following who recognized their unique talent and they were soon forgotten by all but there true fans! They also were a band with a message. Best Albums were, We are an American Band and The Flight of the Phoenix
Rock and Roll soul, a must listen.
I have to go with the RED ALBUM and 1970 LIVE as my top 2.
I have been a big fan of Grand Funk since I first heard them back in the early 70's this song still gives me goosebumps to this day. They were so heavy for the times. Best music ever.
When you got a three piece set up like this and sound THAT good, you know they're great.
With your powers combined, you have opened a new dimension of great classic rock to this mere mortal.
these fellas are still with us, still rockin'. saw them at the Kazoo Ribfest 2017.
Watching this in March 2022. I have seen this GFR video dozens and dozens of times and I can never see it enough. It is...IMHO...the GREATEST LIVE PERFORMANCE OF ALL TIME!!!!
THAT was music in 1970! I was there! Mark Farner was a stallion onstage.
It’s really sad he’s not more appreciated. Definitely one of the best front men of rock.
Thank you for this.
Don Brewer beating those drums like they owed him money!
And you wouldn't be far from the truth. Their manager at the time allegedly screwed them over.
Shoulda been a felony because he KILLED those drums!
@@platterjockey That is SO SAD! Too many talents Artists never reaped the benefits deserved.
And to add this song is 50 years old. Grand Funk Railroad rocks period.
And why aren't they in the HOF? Because Rolling Stone hated Terry Knight.
My music, my time, 65+ yrs old, still rocking!!!
That's why my generation loved Grand Funk.
I just saw Mark Farner and his band a couple of months ago and all I could think of was how can they can keep sound so awesome all this years after. One of my faves.
Pd: sorry for the english.
As far as reactions this channel is the best hands down theeeee BEST
AMEN!!
I think Jamel and "Lost in Vegas" are neck and neck.
YESSIR!
For sure, watched all the others they all suck bad but this one's just right.
There are a few more channels I like that are these reaction type ones. This one is in my top 3.
Yes, Grand Funk RR was a fantastic rock band playin' the Blues. They never got the respect they deserved. 9 platinum albums tell you what their fans thought of them while the rock media (Rolling Stone mag etc) looked down their nose.
60's & 70's killed it for talented music. Can you think of anything live that compares today to this?
AMAZING BAND PERFORMANCE: 3 MUSICIANS?? 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Man...I just have to say...out of all the "reaction" channels...i really enjoy yours the most. I love seeing you discover the music I grew up with and truly enjoy new styles. Rock on brother !
Thanks Brotha🙌🏾
@Ton Ray: Same here!!
I agree! Jamal is so genuine and “ down to earth “ and we can see and feel his mind being blown!
Love Jamel! Only had to cheat on him with other reactors for Jethro Tull!!
Isn't it fun that our music is still having an impact today? I just love seeing his reactions to it. ❤️🎧📻
I grew up In a predominately black neighborhood. A neighbor and friend opened for Ray Charles alone playing his incredible trumpet. Phil you are an awesome dude. I grew up hearing all kinds of blues soul and FUNK!!!! Parliament George was the man!!!
Grand Funk was and still is the measurement of great rock. They never failed to deliver great results
My dad was a rock n roll musician in the 60's and 70's and this was his favorite band. I had all their albums. It was a great time to grow up.
Just 3 guys. Just 3.
They're still the greatest.
Now listen to "people let's stop the war" & "mean mistreater" by the FUNK. Prepare to have mind blown again.
May i suggest adding - Into the Sun to that list...
Jamel's face when he sees and hears that harmonica, PRICELESS! Same dam reaction I had 50 years ago the first time I heard this song.
That voice sold millions of records!
This was a weekend staple for me and my buddies in high school. We had this on 8-track, a 12 pack of beer, a rural Texas two lane blacktop at warp 6 and a large time was had by all!
😍😍😍😍
Jamal makes it even better it's like watching somebody that really enjoys it
And that is how it's done.
Pure excellence 👏👏👏👏
When I was 14 years old back in 1969 I was starting to get into my favorite bands and I started out with three dog night and then went to Grand Funk Railroad. As a younger child everyone was listening to the Beatles.
