Dude it looks amazing. I think your process has just the "right" amount of attention to detail for my project. It's a motorcycle not a vintage car. I watched a whole bunch of other videos where the hit every coat with 3 different grits of sandpaper and a rubbing compound. I'm like, I can't see my own bike when I'm riding, and no one else would look at my bike with a magnifying glass. If it looks good 3 feet away, it's good. I'll definitely get the clear coat with the hardener and call it a day.
I literally just looked up how to paint dirt bike plastics ( for when I get my TBR7 ) and this was the first result. The odds of the first result being the on brother chinese bike is hilarious.
Will be painting the plastic on my Wee-Strom and want them in white. Thanks for this video it’s perfect advice and instruction for my project. It is also well presented, good job.
Do very light coats, doesn't have to be fully covered in first layer or even 2nd layer. It should look solid on the 3rd layer be patient or you'll get runs and chips
Great video, very informational. Any idea if the 2K clear would lay down on top of plastics without primer, if they were prepped properly all the way down to 2000 sanding?
@@pat5861 you probably want to scuff the plastic first with a 3M pad, instead of polishing it smooth before painting. That way the paint will stick. You can wet sand and polish after the clear coat is put on to remove any orange peel.
I bought Ace Hardware branded Paint Adhesion Promoter, and as this video suggested used it as my primer layer. Worked fine. Painted an older GIVI top box (went from black to white) and its held up quite well now going on 2.5 years. Did another one without using paint adhesion layer and it makes a WORLD of difference. Don't skip that base step

That is good information to me. Thank you. With plastics I just know that you can't use any strong solvents like acetone because the plastic won't release them like other surfaces so the cleaning agent really matters. I am wanting to paint my 4runners bumpers, mirrors, and door handles and just want to make sure I only have to do it once. I appreciate your replies and video.
Has anyone done this to a dirt bike? How does it hold up if you do single track? I don't mind scratches I am mostly worried about snagging a branch and peeling off a layer.
How have these held up a year later? I’m thinking of doing this to my little KLX110 I’ve got for a laugh. I’ve sprayed a couple parts green and purple and they look awesome but I want to get green plastics but thought about painting them but wondering if it will last.
@@JackofAllMasterofNone tnx doing the same thing to an yamaha xt 600's plastics in 20 min i got primer for plastics fillet spray and then automotive grade paint
I meant soap resist. Ive been doing my skate decks like that for a few years. You essentially put down your first color let it dry than put down dish soap and spray your second color. Where the dish soap is it masks the first color so when it dries you wash the soap off and its multi colored with a pattern. If you get good at pouring on the soap you can get all kinds of cool shapes. One of my last ones looked like tiger stripes. Then you just clear coat. I use poly on my decks cause it holds up good. I might try this on a cheap bike just to see how it holds up.

Nice video! Painted plastic is actually tougher, and it’s repaired easily. JB weld plastic epoxy fixes cracked plastic and is vary sandible 😎👍🇺🇸
Any update on how this has held up over the past 2 years? Anything you would have done differently?

Hey do you have a video on how to prep it?
I'm thinking of doing something like this to my XT250 but I'm gonna be using a bedliner type paint and just gonna leave it a matte color
I want to spray paint my Explode 250, and our bikes look really similar.
Looks great👌🏼.. what exactly did you use to scuff up the plastics
3m scuff pad
What grit of sandpaper did you use?
Something like 400 works well for this application
I have a question. Do the plastics still have a bit of flex in them or are they completely rigid
Yes they flex
Excellent video. What grit did you use to scuff it up? Or does it matter?
I used a red scotch brite pad
@@JackofAllMasterofNone thanks for the response! Was one can of the 2k enough for all the plastics, or should I get two?
2000 grit.
In a bit lost. Is the 2k gloss the spray paint or is there another spray paint and you use and then you spray the gloss.
Yes. Its a base / clear system. I laid down a urethane base coat, which is the white color. Then the spray max 2k clear coat after that.
If I didn’t want the shine, is there a different type of coat to add on as a finishing touch?
Yes. You can get matte clear
What did you use to clean the parts up after sanding them? Would rubbing alchohol be ok?
I use a spray that consists of an alcohol based cleaner so yes that should be fine
Thanks. Could you be more specific with the spray you use?

Of course
what grit was the sandpaper?
I'm doing mine in olive drab and I'm carbon warping the tank

What kind of paint did u use I’m looking to get black
Napa made. Not sure of the exact supplier to them. They mix it up on the spot.
How many cans of adhesion promoter/paint/clear coat did you need?
Way less than 1 can of adhesion promotor. I had 3 cans of white and 2 cans of clear.
Tomorow I will do this with my exc300 :0 ♡♡♡♡

Easy. Have to remove the gas tank, which is simple. I have another video on installing the digital cluster
