No, he wasn't the final boss of the game.
He was the final boss of the *series* .
If you have taken down Darkeater Midir before Gael
@@ottodavis-octane3839 I always leave Midir till last, sorta goes from the beginning of the story, fighting a dragon, in the darkest depths
The final boss of the series, you fight the Dark Soul that’s within gaels body, a fitting ending.
@@yandere8418 I think so too, but Midir ate a lot of the dark soul too. Which makes both the perfect last 2 bosses. I usually blitz Halflight, then going midir, and finish with gael

Technically there is that one Ringed Knight in the arena to bear witness. I call him Steve.
For hype context...
This is the song that plays in the final battle.
Like literally the last fight at the end of time. All other combatants have faded and turned to ash. And you battle in a valley made of their scattered ash.
You, a failure, ressurected to try and save the world again when many who succeded refused to do it again. Gael, a slave, cursed and belittled. But hes outlived his masters.... hes collected all the parts of the "dark soul" one of four borne of the first flame.... all... but the bit you hold.
He literally holds all the power in the world... except that which you bring with you.
There is literally nothing left in the entire world... but you ... and Gael. And no matter the outcome of your battle... the Dark Soul will be made whole again..
@@minecraftmaster12245 it could be- its not explained. But i see it more as a mix of ash and everything being so old its crumbled to dust
@@minecraftmaster12245 There isn't any ash in Gaels arena just sand. Soul of Cinder might have ash in the arena just due to the fact thats where you do link the fire.
Also don't forget that Gael in the end was doing this for the painter, in fact its kinda implied he wants you to help him complete the dark soul and give it to painter.
@@HowlingDoom Yeah it's heavily implied, through his item descriptions and the fact he leaves you messages showing how to get to him in the Dreg Heap, that he knew the Dark Soul would drive him mad. He was leading you there so you could kill him and finish the job.
Very well put. And it seems the song does convey it beautifully.
Everytime I hear Dark Souls or Bloodborne OST I'm like "Wait, was THIS playing while I was fighting?".

What about me
It isn't overhyped. Just listening to it isn't the same as having it in background while fighting the man who by himself survived until the end of the world, fighting for a new one. Sacrificing himself so others can live away from the mistakes the gods made. It's the whole package that makes this song more than amazing.
This is true. I never become attatched to music without experiencing it in full context. I can enjoy it, and appreciate it, but experiencing it properly first adds so much.
Actually he is a slave doing his mistress orders to find some pigment, he couldn't get the pigment early because the Ashen One took down most if the lords before him
I learned that myself listening to music made before it's respective boss was finished, as well as music to fill a slot previously held by a placeholder
Two nobodys fighting in the wasteland their kings and gods mistakes created, it's sincerely an amazing closure and especially when you have the music slightly higher than the sfx when fighting the boss
especially when you get to 2nd phase and gael is flying all over the place among lightning strikes, with the music in the background, that was the most fcking epic scene in the whole series.

Wait did you fight Gael? Your points on desperation, hopeless and everything being over were spot on.
We are all hoping that he would fight Gael Someday.... :D That would be a perfect end to the series.
that’s just how fitting the track is
Also I mean, going off name alone "slave knight" doesn't sound like Gael is having a good time haha
He hasn't played DS3 yet but it's the next game on his list. Can't wait for him to see the abyss watchers
Music is but a language, that's all
“Hand it over. That thing, your dark soul”
"...for my lady's painting..."
I got goosebumps just from reading it lol
Imagine he tries to get up and just falls because he's too old and he ultimately has to fight you in a wheelchair.
me: " yametee ojiisan!"
No worries grandpa, I will take your lady
Its really interesting how much and how accurate he was able to especulate about aspects of the lore just by hearing this song. For us, Dark Souls Nerds, the implications are obvious ...but to see someone with no atachments to the series get so much right is really something! It shows how storytelling can be much more than just pictures and words, Great video!
Thanks a lot Lucas, indeed!
React to Gherman OST from bloodborne
I think he´s ignoring it
He's gonna do it one day
Point up
He's DEFINITELY going to do Gherman eventually. I'm pretty sure he just doesn't want to burn out on dark souls/bloodborne content.
Maybe try asking nicely? Instead of demanding
He described the fight with Gael with 100% accuracy without even playing the game. FUCKING INCREDIBLE. Even his "wailing of failures" perfectly describes the failure of upheaval of civilization in Dark Souls, the end of everything and Gael's mission to deliver the blood to his niece so she can create a new world and start again. Honestly at awe at his analysis. He understands music inside and out, and also shows how great Yuka Kitamura was at trying to translate what Miyazaki was going for in music.

This guy interpreted the exact placement of this song in the game and a ton of actual game elements too just by interpreting the music. Not sure which is better, his ability to read that from the music, or the original composers for being able to convey that so well to a listener who hasn’t even played dark souls.
Credit to the composer of course! 😄
I thinks it’s probs a mixture of both, real recognized real after all!
I've to admit: you were right about the overhype of Gael's soundtrack.
I mean, it's an awesome song, but the love of Dark Souls fan for this track comes from the "overall" boss fight.
Gael, has you deducted, has 3 phases, and the visual presentation of each of one is important: first phase Gael fights animalistic, has little reason left, like a monster. Second phase, with that crescendo of sounds, Gael reagains his sanity and purpose to fight, third phase he's struggling to contain the Dark Soul while still fighting you.
And the second and third phase, man... The visuals matches the soundtrack perfectly: just imagine fight a monstrous giant with a big and broken sword, in a deserted and crumbling city, with him attacking relentlessly, while a storm of lighting strikes all the battlefield.
That's the only way for me to fully experience this track.
I think the track by itself does not translate to the hype, but I will probably get it when I play the game
@@AtlasBenighted I'm sure of that, from an epicness point of view is probably the best boss fight in the series.
All boss themes in Dark Souls are great, but viewed in their specific contest I think, as they're, like you said, supporting role in storytelling.
Same goes for me with Metal Gear Rising: lot of awesome tracks, that paired with their boss fights are truly good.
And gael exploding with all the souls hes collected over centuries, homing in to take your life

One problem here, Gael doesn't regain his sanity. Starting in phase 2, he's gone hollow. Weapons such as the hollowslayer do bonus damage only beginning in this stage
The solo female voice is actually her singing....Yuka Kitamura. She also played those fast violins in the song. Such a cool fact, honestly. That’s the type of composer I’d wanna be.
You’re totally right about it having this heart-wrenching and lamenting quality to it and it does fit so perfectly with the Dark Souls world. Thanks for reacting!

@@eliasbonafe9236 They were a mix of VST instruments and live instruments. Particularly Kitamura’s songs. She sang in a ton of songs and played the violin throughout the majority of them. She also played cello and piano in some.
The choir, percussion, bells, and string ensembles backing it all up were VSTs. (Recorded samples of live instruments)
So, basically it’s a blend. Slave Knight Gael is a good example of this because you can clearly hear Kitamura’s voice and her layers of violin playing along with the darker male choir VSTs. It’s pretty cool.

3:32 FIRST PHASE, 5:30 SECOND PHASE !!! 7:35 THIRD PHASE ! Best Song, best boss in gaming history for me!
Oh man when u first see Gael exploding with the song it really changes your life.
that female voice is sang by Yuka Kitamura the composer herself and it always struck and gave me chills on the third phase
Slave knight Gael is especially personal to me and prob to a lot of other soul fans. Lore wise, Gael embodies the raw emotion of humanity struggling against their own fate, and thus in the middle of nowhere at the end of the world, you fight him for the dark soul. This theme gives me all sorts of feelings when listening to it, especially since it’s the last boss of the souls series. But I love it nonetheless :)
For me Gale was the last boss. Two of history's ultimate loosers, a slave knight and one who tried and failed to link the fire, fighting at the edge of the world and the end of time for the dark soul itself. This was the apocalypse for the setting.
This is not a simple boss battle; this was saying farewell to a friend reaching the end of his path, and carrying his task to completion when he couldn't do it himself.
This is a pair of warriors bonded over the same quest and absolute dedication, perfectly matching each other in a physical confrontation so that the one who failed could bestow the dark soul to the one who could yet succeed, who could, in turn, allow his friend to finally rest, having his mantle carried after his fall. And whether you succeed or fail in this fight, you feel a loss. There is no right outcome, only one when you at least leave with what you came for, at a price.
You do not fight Gael because you want his destruction, but because you owe him a proper end after he lost his track, as a partner. You do not fight fueled with destruction, hatred or even disdain, although he has indeed fallen. Instead, you do your best to best him as a token of respect as well as to prove yourself perseverent enough to not succumb to the same peril that made him fail.
These are two friends crossing steel at the very edge of time and space so that one can redeem the other, and the world itself, allowing the cycle of creation to start again, untainted.
The actual world is unsalvageable, cursed by Gwyn's folly and cowardice to repeat itself, in utter defiance to the very urge to create, each time a shadow of its previous iteration until there is nobody to walk it. But the painted world can be made anew so that a new, different home can exist for those lost souls who maybe seek one.
The ultimate encounter with Slave-Knight Gael is perhaps the deepest and most intimate scene I've lived in a video game and is certain evidence that a final adversary can not be an antagonist. If there is an antagonist in this fight, it is most likely the Dark Soul that took possession of Gael, and not the knight himself. Yet, the Soul has to be conquered and so Gael must be defeated. Such was his purpose since the beginning and it is likely that he knew it all along, hence why he recruited you in the first place and guided you on every step so that this final meeting could take place. So that Gael could retrieve the Dark Soul, be consumed by it and become its vessel so that you could then arrive, conquer it by proving your might, will and dedication and leave uncorrupted.
Or so at least is how I interpret it.
this is a extremely good explanation
LMAOOOO that tease with the. “It was uh.....it was...you know?........it was AWESOME!”

GERHMAN OST PLS ITS SO GORGEOUS
This song degrades into complete chaos in the third phase and that is perfect. I cried when I beat this boss man, the final fight in the entire series. At the start of the fight you are just defending yourself from Gael who recognizes you but once the dark blood drips out of Gael and he realizes that he has finally found what his mistress needed to make a world separate from the slowly dying one he resides in, a fresh start, he goes hollow (he basically becomes a pseudo zombie) and your character now has to finish off the now hollow Gael to claim the dark blood, bring it to Gael's "niece", and give humanity another chance. A beautiful and hopeful end to the series. He killed me about 20 times until I finally beat him, so worth it.

I love how you can just tell so much about Gael and the bossfight just from the music
The reason why people praise this song so much has to do with the depth and much more so the meaning. If you one day arrive in Dark Souls 3 at this point and you have read the lore pieces along the way and understand Slave Knight Gael and you have him standing in front of you with this song kicking in you will shake from the goosebumps and simultaniously wanna cry.
The amount of feelings that this boss fight awakens is unreal.... and that is coming from me, an emotionless brick....
As a verry popular comment, wich can also be found in this here comment section states: "Two nobodies, in the middle of nowhere, fighting over nothing, with no one to witness it."
Yes the comment is oversimplyfied and theres much more to it than nobodies fighting over nothing, but essentually the main thing about the entire scenery is the sense of hopelesness and despair.
From the verry first moment you woke up in the cell in the undead asylum you persevered and fought your way through against all odds only to end up here.... and when you see it you will understand. I wont spoil no more.
I would also say that the weapons clashing and striking during the battle adds to the sound too, I felt it was missing some percussion in sections, but it is a battle taking place. Combined with the sound of combat it is intense for sure.
2:47 "Everyone who can't take the plunge..."
I see what you did there
the music of each boss in this game is its own whole experience!
so glad to see you feel the songs and read out the situations, only by listening to the music.
Great reaction! I agree completely with the wall-of-sound insight. It gives you little room to breathe or 'hide' so to speak (in a good way for the context). My favorite track in DS3 would have to be Nameless King. It's got this incredible storm motif similar to the famous storm movement from Rossini's William Tell Overture. It's ridiculous.
Intriguing!
That wailing is because of this in my opinion:
Gael is the greatest hero among the humans. He went to the deepest part of hell and sacrificed everything to make a new world in which humans can finally be free from the gods, but no one will ever remember his name since no one was there to notice...
I’m glad this was recommended. This is definitely a very strong track and is such a gorgeous piece.
First time seeing your channel but I love dark souls and would love to see more videos like this where you dissect video game music and show what its trying so say, subscription from me
One of the best tracks on the series. I also recommend “Father Ariandel and Sister Friede” theme. It has everything imo.
The transitions were a bit janky because the actual version is 9 minutes long and each phase is around 3 minutes long. In that version the transitions are much more fluid.
I think the reason people hype this song up is the boss behind it. Gael is by far the best boss in ds3 for most people, and the song is one of the main attractions alongside the fight and lore.
Gael was once a hollow slave knight pushed forward as fodder by lothric. He was drawn into the painting of Ariendel and decided to serve the young painter who lived there. Gael needed to retrieve the dark soul as a pigment for the painting, but when he reached the ringed city, he found the pygmy lords dead. In desperation, he started drinking their dried blood in a hopeless attempt to steal the dark soul for himself. The ashen one finds him in this moment, and they fight over the dark soul. 2 nobodies, fighting for a future that doesn't exist, in the middle of nowhere with nobody to benefit. Perfection.
Sorry for the long comment, but I felt I had to articulate the lore in all its glory.
I'm pretty sure Gael predates Lothric?
@@fumeknightofshovelry3901 maybe he does? I just saw the lore that way

I had no idea that one could basically understand the lore in dark souls 3 from just the last song. When he said that it could loop blew my mind since that is what dark souls 3 is about. You are trying to end the loop for good but it may just keep looping in an endless cycle.
YES!! So glad to see this
All these pieces for all the different bosses are just amazing, man. And these games are art.
Just a small glimpse of Gael lore: he once was a knight in an army, an army of undead knights that where in the front line, just to clear the path and get the enemy tired, as they would never die. Then, he would search for something else to serve, as he knew that he wasnt a champion or anything like that. Then, he goes on search for the Blood of the Dark Soul, that his lady would need to paint a new world for mankind. When he finally founds it, its literally the end of the world, and you, the Ashen One and Gael, are the last two living things. And you two fight for the Blood of the Dark Soul, because Gael has gonne hollow beyong imagination, and basically becomes the darkness it self.
Yeah, my english aint perfect but hope everyone likes reading it :)
Yuka Kitamura is just genius, she's responsible for all the best OST of Dark Souls II, Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3, Gael's soundtrack is truly a masterpiece... She's unbalanced compared to the others composers at From Software

Curious fact, the developers from "From Software" use the boss fight songs as a metronome on combat, so you as a player know when to evade/block the incoming attack.
One of the hardest bosses on Dark souls 3, the Dancer of the Boreal valley, have a theme with odd compass, 2/3 if i remember right
No waaay 😮
3/4, but you're close. Every boss in the game except the Dancer is 4/4 or an equivalent.
Everytime I fight gael I always turn up volume.
The fight feels tense as hell and I LOVE it every moments.
Thank you for this video!
The fact that you read the comments and take them seriously is a great thing. Thank you.
Thanks for watching mate!
Geal starts of as an elderly Mpc who's only reason to live after the end of the world's was to get his grand daughter some paint. He himself is powerless and requires your characters help. Skip to the end of the games final dlc, where the word has turned to ashes, the gods of old are all dead, nothing remains, except your character and a red hood, a lowly Slave..
(Basically he is a nobody who fought till the end of time dying to all the powerfull enemies of the ringed city, each time he died, he returned like your player, each life he lost, he sacrificed everything, including his sanity. Just to fulfil his grand daughters wish (even though she may already be dead by this point).
BTW I imagen the female voice to be that of his grand daughter...
Lowly slave..yet so powerful..
Ainz is justice!
Yessss been waiting for this! You know what you should totally do? Since you've reacted to so many OST from Dark souls 3, you should play it yourself to experience it and record it for youtube! The significance of this boss battle can definitely be felt in the music. Soul of cinder was the final boss of the game, but Gael was the final boss of the entire series. The one boss to end it all. The one boss to survive the end of the entire world.
As much as I'd like to see him play the game I think it's highly unlikely since this is not a gaming channel
@@lubko981 He could open a gaming channel. I'm sure it will bring him in a ton of views too! I just want him to experience the ost in real time so he can see what hes listened to.
"Is this... The blood.. of the Dark Soul?"
-Gael
It's incredibly beautiful orchestra. Great music review brother.
I'm surprised not many are mentioning Sister Friede and Father Ariandel's theme. The dual boss theme just seem to fit both their personality and disposition and the fact that there's two different themes of soft and deceptively alluring to tension inducing and intimidating just clashing with each other but still somehow remain in rhythmic harmony its almost like a controlled chaos.
Yep one of the best
Gael and gwyns music fall into the category of "Its calming to start, picks up as they grow more desperate" song tells a story behind a story.
The third phase of both the fight and the ost just hits so hard specially with the lightning
Honestly, Gael's fight and theme one of my favorite. You did awesome react and review. Keep it up!
Thanks mate!
21:27 I really like how you read the meaning of the female line and perfectly translate that into game lore..
Thanks mate!
Regardless of how many times I died I always did a slow walk towards Gael as the music starts to ramp.
This fight and ds in general can never be duplicated the intensity the music the sense of fairness and difficulty and the rewarding feeling of numb hands after a victory
Don't skip the cutscenes tho
FINALLY THIS IS WHAT WE"VE BEEN WAITING FOR!
