turns out the age of fire actually ended up burning for so long that the world was burned away until almost nothing but ashes remained, at least that's what the ringed city seems to point towards
Allowing the Age of Dark to arrive is, to me, the obvious correct choice. The continuous burning of the flame defies the necessary cyclical nature of existence - there is no life without death. "The Gods" would lose their precious creation and power if the flame goes out, so humans are forced to quite literally sacrifice their humanity in order to remain servants to the Gods and keep the Age of Fire artificially limping along. One is driven to re-kindle the flame out of pure propaganda and prophecy, toiling to sacrifice themselves to re-enslave their own species for eternity. If the Age of Dark is allowed to arrive, as is the tendency of nature, the world of Dark Souls would really not be so dark.
To be fair while its clear linking the fire isn't a "good" ending as it just prolongs the world dying as seen in DS2 and DS3 we also don't know for sure if the dark lord ending is good either. Just because one ending leads the world to continuing its ruin we also don't know if the other ending will be good either. All we have is Kaathe's word for it and how do we know he isn't just telling us useful half-truths to get us to side with him? He could just as easily be telling us just enough truth to get us to believe while leaving out very important details. I mean look at what happened to Oolacile and New Londo after they followed Kaathe's advice. After you leave the kiln in the dark lord ending you could be starting a better world for mankind free of the god's interference or we could also have been played by the primordial serpents and gave humanity up like lambs to the slaughter in a fate worse than we could imagine. My point being that we saw the dark and decayed world the link the fire ending takes us to but we don't know if the dark lord ending is any better either as we never saw it. The closest thing we do have is the untended graves in DS3 which is implied to be an alternate world that entered the age of dark, the age of man. What do you see in this world? Nothing but blackness, endless void, not a single living soul. Do you really think there being an "everything was then good" happy ending is very Dark Souls-esque after all?
@@JJAB91 Yeah it seemed like Kaathe played on power to entice the Chosen Undead, Oolacile and the Four Kings. A "Dark Lord" is an enticing position of power very similar to how he likely enticed Oolacile and the Four Kings and we know what happened with them, they became captives of the Abyss. But perhaps his intentions on unleashing and furthering the unstoppable Abyss was not incorrect. Perhaps the Age of Dark was a necessary part of the cycle that had been born, Light to Dark, Dark to Light and on and on. Kaathe may have known this and used deception to try and correct this balance, half truths and lies to right a perpetuated wrong. Prior to the Age of Light it was a foggy gray world, so the Light started this, and I guess we will never know if the Age of Light will ever return. It could be an eternal age of darkness and abyss with nothing but humanity roaming around. Dunno
@@JJAB91 I agree with this perspective. Now, this may be an unpopular opinion, but I believe I find the "alternative" ending of Dark Souls 2 to be the wisest choice to the fate of the cycle. The role of "Monarch" that our character inherits means that we are forced to make a decision that determines the fate of the cycle and the world as we know it. However, depending on our choices during dialogue with Aldia, we are presented an option to walk away from the throne. By walking away, (atleast in the sequel), we don't appear to receive, nor swear allegience to Kaathe and his agenda. Instead, we're on our own in our search for a different solution that results in an uncertain future. We don't seem to pick a side. In Dark Souls 1, we can only choose to sacrifice ourselves for the Flame, or embrace the Dark alongside Kaathe. In Dark Souls 3, we can once again sacrifice ourselves for the dying Flame, corrupt it to herald the Age of Dark as a Lord, allow the flame to die and let the world transition naturally into the Age of Dark as ordained... or let our desire and greed steal the flame for ourselves. I don't know. I find the alternative ending in Dark Souls 2 to be a more sensible approach. A monarch that realize the truth of the cycle and attempts to find a better way, without kneeling for someone else's cause and ambitions.
This is incredible! A perfect retelling of the core story of Dark Souls that's accurate, and that doesn't drag on. I look forward to seeing new entries in your "Video Games Retold" series, and hope that you one day also cover the other Souls/Borne games.
They look genuinely terrifying, and even more so after being punched by them. AVOID THIS MENACE AT ALL COST OR BECOME YET ANOTHER BLOODSTAIN ON THEIR HANDS AND BODY
I beat this game for the first time 2 years ago, almost. I still remember it. It’s my favorite of the Soulsborne games. I love Bloodborne to death, but one part always sticks out to me in this game. When the npc says “don’t you dare give up.” I don’t remember which one, but nonetheless. It cemented the point that this game was meant to be hard, but it was also meant to be overcome. Other games in the series were piggybacking off of it, but this one was the first one that really meant it. Demon’s Souls was meant to be hard. This game was meant to be overcome. When I was struggling with depression, that struggle to always push forward is what kept me going. It’s why I still consider it one of my favorite games of all time. Even though Bloodborne was my first game, that line “don’t you dare give up” is what keeps me loving this game. The developers knew they were giving us a tall task, but they believed us to be up to the task. That’s what made the game special, versus the rest of the series.
Brilliant work of art!! I just finished Dark Souls Remaster and your video helps me understand the plot much more clearly :) Thank you for your hard work and enlightenment.
Man imagine this as a physical item. A heavy book with a thick cover wrapped with faux-leather. Set in the center of the front cover is a Dark Sign made from rose gold. Each page has a parchment feeling to it, and the letters are slightly pressed in to give more texture to each page. It'd come packaged with a bookmark that looks like a white soapstone, and the Collector's Edition includes a set of bookends themed to look like Firelink Shrine and the Kiln of the First Flame.
Yeah your not wrong but just because someone doesn’t wanna play a hard game doesn’t mean that they suck they tried something that they didn’t like and they didn’t like it. That’s fine
@Evaly FBI agent Its not that it being hard makes it good. Its the achievement, the feeling of surpassing where you used to be, and overcoming this game.
Amazing series! Great narrative, sounds & music, illustrations, animation, editing and narration. I know some time has passed since this happened, but I still can express the enjoyment I had with this awesome work.
Whoa! I’m late to the party but this is masterful. I’ve only just recently begun my descent into the souls games and am loving how well this recounts the adventure. I really do hope you’ll come out with more!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Man I really love the way you help people understand the beautiful story of dark souls. To be honest, I would love to see you make 2 more of these for the other 2 games. These games have such a wonderful story and it would be an honor to be able to see you convey the other 2 stories in such a great way
Man, just watched this great video. It's overwhelming, really. I'm a big fan of DS series, especially lore, and this legendway of telling our story it's calming me someway. If there will be stories about the 2nd and the 3rd, I'm definitely will watch this! Thank you, man!
I just stumbled across this. How incredibly well done this was! I immediately searched to see if others were made. This could be a really worthwhile series, people would love it.
I got to thank you for this... the intro gave me this feeling, that remembered me of my childhood watching this one particular series I sadly cant remember the title... and this all combined with the Story of my most favorite game series... you just made my day
This is amazing, I have only played DS3 and just recently started DS remastered. Besides the mechanics, the only gripe I had was not being able to go over any dialogue or any information that was previously given so at the rate I’m progressing the lore has been hard to follow. This tied it together and filled in a lot of the blanks I’ve been having
i love this, and because i love this ill point out a certain nitpick, before the fall gwyns knights were silver, and only blackened and scorched after a certain campaign against the deamons 1:00 otherwise perfect
Another nitpick, the Witch of Izalith trying to recreate the first flame out of desperation is a misconception, the chaos flame and creation of demons was a success and lead to Izalith's prosperity. Only later did it go out of control.
This is really good. I would also add something like”He was slain over and over again… rising only to do it again. With a grit and determination above and beyond that of any other, the Chosen Undead surmounted odds thought insurmountable. Slaying gods and beings with power well beyond his own, through sheer force of will” and show a beaten up Chosen Undead staring at the camera with determined look on his face
This is brilliant! You've been able to take the story of the first game and using simple but beautiful illustrations, tell it in an easily digestible ten minute virtual book. I really like this idea!
Amazing video. But...instead of "only the gods know" You could've hit the prime principle of the souls game, disparity. It doesn't matter what choice the chosen undead made as where there is light, there will always be darkness and vice versa. But loved the artwork and the narration regardless!!
The level of detail brought upon this story is so, enchanted by the endings of dark souls three with the four, I believe that with the true ending always being one same. Not mattered by the title, the age of darkness is the one path that brings, ushers in the true age, of the man, the pigmy
This is amazing. I've just finished this game for the first time, and your video makes it so much easier to understand what the hell just happened, thank you.
The story and lore of Runescape has gotten miles deeper in recent years. It definitely could be as interesting as this video. I'd say not quite as interesting but Dark Souls is my favorite game series of all time so I'm a bit biased. :p
The Regular Village ghoul probably with what has happened in the more recent updates. Especially since the God's are now back fighting for control of the world
One day my son will definitely watch the first 5.50 min of this masterpiece before playing Dark Souls. Thanks for sharing this video, praise the sun. ☀️

This intro still gives me chills. It was my first souls game and I never skipped that scene lol. It was incredible to me back then
Having played Dark Souls myself, I can honestly say you hit the nail on the head here. Well done, keep up the good work.
I'll be honest, I subscribed for the pokedex. But now you're telling me you do Dark Souls too!? You are the best!
Whoa! I’m late to the party but this is masterful. I’ve only just recently begun my descent into the souls games and am loving how well this recounts the adventure. I really do hope you’ll come out with more!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you for the kind words! I'm working on DS2 :)
@@Versiris My pleasure!! Okay, awesome, I'm gonna be starting DS2 so hopefully I'll finish in time. But, with Elden Ring... i dunno lol
Man I really love the way you help people understand the beautiful story of dark souls. To be honest, I would love to see you make 2 more of these for the other 2 games. These games have such a wonderful story and it would be an honor to be able to see you convey the other 2 stories in such a great way
This may be my favorite thing I have seen on UA-cam in years
Makes me wanna replay the whole story, after watching this
Absolutely love this, the stylized artwork is so good and the story included only the necessary parts. All around amazing job
I literally took a screenshot of every picture lol, trying to figure out which one to use for my wallpaper
Amazing chest ahead, obviously
@@lilixpictures6128 Try ambush from behind.
*Tongue but hole*
All of them, set it to shuffle
Or rather don’t put it on shuffle and have the story restart with the linking of the flame at the end.
I love how this storytelling feels majestic and legendary, and for the hero to the story to be us is magnificent…
This was beautifully done and will absolutely be a staple to show people why the souls franchise is my favorite
Man, just watched this great video. It's overwhelming, really. I'm a big fan of DS series, especially lore, and this legendway of telling our story it's calming me someway. If there will be stories about the 2nd and the 3rd, I'm definitely will watch this! Thank you, man!
I have seen many DS lore videos but this one was my absolute favorite! It was kept so simple and I love it. And the art. Dear lord. Well done!!
Zetsub0 what are some other good ones?
2020 and I'm here still excited for this story
I just stumbled across this. How incredibly well done this was! I immediately searched to see if others were made. This could be a really worthwhile series, people would love it.
Thank you! :) I'm working on a DS2 episode
I got to thank you for this... the intro gave me this feeling, that remembered me of my childhood watching this one particular series I sadly cant remember the title... and this all combined with the Story of my most favorite game series...
you just made my day
Wow! I didn't know, it's possible to tell the story of Dark Souls in such a beautiful way. Wonderful reading, wonderful pictures. Keep goin man!
The song in the begining gave me so much nostalgia from Dark Souls I
This is amazing, I have only played DS3 and just recently started DS remastered. Besides the mechanics, the only gripe I had was not being able to go over any dialogue or any information that was previously given so at the rate I’m progressing the lore has been hard to follow. This tied it together and filled in a lot of the blanks I’ve been having
Holy Cow, this shaked the shit out of me. My teenage days and my present, it's all there. Glory to Miyazaki and you, forever.
I come back to this video a lot, just for the art, it's so crisp and clean it's just super satisfying to look at!
NICE NICE NICE
Can we please make this go trending?
It's so well made!
I love the storybook/cutout style
Hats off to you, Versiris
Makes my skin crawl, my god- Dark Souls is so freakin awesome
i love this, and because i love this ill point out a certain nitpick, before the fall gwyns knights were silver, and only blackened and scorched after a certain campaign against the deamons 1:00
otherwise perfect
Another nitpick, the Witch of Izalith trying to recreate the first flame out of desperation is a misconception, the chaos flame and creation of demons was a success and lead to Izalith's prosperity. Only later did it go out of control.
One more nitpick, the one who drops the key to the cell at the start wasn’t Oscar, other than these I think it’s incredible
7:13 - "The landscape was treacherous indeed..."
Everyone who's played Dark Souls: "NO SHIT!"
great illustration, and a much needed concise summary of the story without being too detailed
I was not ready for amazing and thought out this was. Amazingly put together your content continues to amaze me.
This video is just magnificent it's like the perfect knight's tale to tell to my children. just subscribed!

I don’t know whether to laugh or cringe.
...Or both.
i miss when this was funny
@@_Ho7line 2018 memes were the best.
After watching this I realise how intense a Netflix serious set in the Dark Souls universe could be
Amazing video.
But...instead of "only the gods know"
You could've hit the prime principle of the souls game, disparity. It doesn't matter what choice the chosen undead made as where there is light, there will always be darkness and vice versa.
But loved the artwork and the narration regardless!!
this was awesome. you should absolutely do dark souls 2 and 3 next.
This the best summery of the first dark souls I've ever seen, and I love the story book format.
The level of detail brought upon this story is so, enchanted by the endings of dark souls three with the four, I believe that with the true ending always being one same. Not mattered by the title, the age of darkness is the one path that brings, ushers in the true age, of the man, the pigmy
Just seeing this for the first time and had to pause watching just to say wow! This is incredible work!
An impressive amount of work, I truly love this story, and the voice... MY GOD, this voice is made to read an entire book 😍
The art is amazing! I would love to buy a Dark Souls storybook like this.
This is amazing. I've just finished this game for the first time, and your video makes it so much easier to understand what the hell just happened, thank you.
I'd love to see more like these! Imagine the tales you could weave from Shekiro, Bloodborne, ER!
This was awesome! I eagerly wait to see more.
I've been meaning to do this sort of video for RuneScape! Looks like you've beaten me to it and to great success! Thank you for the awesome vid!!!
Trommari
Would the story of Runescape deliver a similar good experience, story wise, in your opinion?
Im corious, maybe ill read it too
The story and lore of Runescape has gotten miles deeper in recent years. It definitely could be as interesting as this video. I'd say not quite as interesting but Dark Souls is my favorite game series of all time so I'm a bit biased. :p
ChickenSphere
Nevertheless, it's a good idea.
I hope you get to make this one day, good courage. 🙏
It was just going to be for fun really
The Regular Village ghoul probably with what has happened in the more recent updates. Especially since the God's are now back fighting for control of the world
One day my son will definitely watch the first 5.50 min of this masterpiece before playing Dark Souls. Thanks for sharing this video, praise the sun. ☀️
This is PERFECT. Amazing artworks with amazing soundtrack followed by the classic dark soul character voices just amazing.
This is LITERALLY the opening of a movie 1000/10, would watch again!!!
This is a high quality piece of art and a beatiful reminder of Dark Souls, I thank thee for this magnificent video😃
“Only the gods will know” well so does my ps trophies
My fav series:(da best ones)
Pokedex
Backwards cat
I really enjoyed your works
One of the best video game stories ever told in my opinion.
I constantly keep rewatching this video. So well made!

So you’re the funny guy, huh?
@@hamsandvich8956 no no, Smough is pretty thicc tho
This is confusing when playing a translation...
this vid is what got me into Dark Souls. i look forward to see if you do the same with Dark Souls 2, 3, and Bloodborne
It moved me greatly to remember my experiences in DS being retold in this masterful way. Thank you a lot!
I've always been curious about the lore of the game and now I understand it completely! Thanks for the explanation and the AMAZING artwork.
It has been a whole year... hope the others are coming.
