Great video! A few points on things you mentioned: Comparing the feel of the soundtrack to a Greek epic is a very good analogy to the events of the game. To summarize, the world is dying and you are on a quest to sacrifice yourself to extend it. Currently your character is in the ringed city, where the lands of the world draw closer (literally) and come together. The city itself is a kind of prison the gods made for humanity. Darkeater Midir is an enormous Dragon (Dragons are integral to the dark souls story), who was commanded to guard the city against the Dark by Lord Gywn. Eventually, he succumbed to the Dark, and became corrupted. Earlier in the game you encounter him and knock him into the pit where you fight him. While the song plays, you fight one of the most powerful beings in the Souls universe, a being of legend decended from the oldest age, before the Gods even came to be. It's a intense and difficult fight of a man against a titan. Also, you mentioned a martial feeling. While this can apply to much of Dark souls, it is especially fitting here as Midir was the Guardian and Warden of the Ringed City, a soldier to watch over them. But now he is corrupted and attacks any who approach. Speaking of which, you mentioned how the music made you feel. To me this always evoked a desperate, clawing struggle for survival against him. It also evoked the corruption in its shrill noted and pitched choir, which you can see in the black/purple crystals and dust you can see coating and falling from Midir. That beat in the background told you to not stop, to keep moving, that you were never safe unless you did not hesitate. Midir's soundtrack, while not my favorite (that belongs to Gael's Theme), is excellent and I love the feeling and drive it brings to the encounter. You did very well in the analysis of this song.
Fuck yeah! Vordts track is highly underrated cus we all raped his big Vordt booty, his soundtrack feels like so much love went into it and for that he has a firm seat on my spotify playlist.
@@notnoodle1918 yeah I definitely destroyed Vordt on my first try. I didn‘t need multiple days, cuz I sucked, totally not the case. Only because I liked the music of course.
Another amazing reaction from you. But for the future I'd recommend listening to Souls tracks from topic channels of the composers (namely Yuka Kitamura and Motoi Sakuraba). They have a great sound quality without those obnoxious loops. Also, fandom must have lost his mind, because nobody suggests Pontiff Sulyvahn and Yorm the Giant (don't forget, topic channels 👈👀)
Few people actually listen to their soundtracks, unfortunately. Pontiff's because most people have such a hard time with him the first time they just hate him, and Yhorm's because he's got a short battle (if you use Storm Ruler). I personally like their themes a lot. But, you can't really win when the majority want Gael's and Twin Princes' themes (I can't blame them though, their themes rock).
@@bluethunderbolt9631 Wow. I thought people listened to Pontiff’s theme way more. I freakin love it. I used to loop it and just soak up the chaotic choir and strings. It’s too good. I also recently started appreciating Yhorm and Dragonslayer Armor’s theme.
I've always thought this song was about Midir the dragon rather than the main character. But your interpretation is quite good as Midir was raised as a slave basically by those who slaughtered his own kind and he kept to his duty even after everything fell apart, wounded and tainted with darkness. You are actually not required to kill him but there is an NPC that tells you to do it so that he can rest in peace after an eternity of pain.
picturing yourself in the "story of the song" is something I do with instrumentals a lot, just let my mind wander to whatever images the music create in my mind

@@ZeFluffyKnight eh from my experience Dark Souls II had some really great additions and some bad aswell but because people always look only at the negative aspects they tend to hate on it, personally it's still my favourite along with the original Demon's Souls and of course Sekiro mainly because they were innovating compared to something like Dark Souls III which is just worse Bloodborne with Dark Souls recycling.
Guessing the story merely from the OST is super interesting. I hope you keep do this kind of 'roleplay' in your future ost reaction. This OST review is one of the best content for me in youtube, thank you sir. Oh and perhaps you should try to look into some images of the particular boss (Midir for example) and see if you can connect the music to the appearance of the boss itself.
"Dark Eater Midir" is the name of the boss that you fight when you hear this song, the boss is a massive black dragon that's been slowly corrupted over the ages. It's also the hardest boss in Dark Souls 3.
You should do a break down on Sister Friede and Father Ariendel’s track. Pontiff Sulyvan is also a very under appreciated track that I think you should hear.
Great video! It was everything I hoped it would be. And I feel the roleplay was pretty on point, since you literally make a one way drop into a pit with a dragon. I'm glad you enjoyed the track and I'm looking forward to future videos!
Okay yeah I'm super happy that I've found this channel. I have an extreme love for listening to music and fuckin love it when I get to hear a composer break it down
Whenever I hear Midir's theme, I can't help but create the vision of a giant, unstoppable creature, lunging and trying to get me, while still being basically impossible to beat by my mortal self and I find that fascinating.
"It is about something, it is about a threat that is way bigger than you, and you are certenly not ready to figth it, but you are going to do it anyway." you couldn't be more right!
Perhaps thou'st beheld the lone dragon that inhabiteth this city? Midir is his name, and the Archdragons are his forebears. He once railed against the dark, but was by dark afflicted. Now here, returned, he remaineth. To watch over the sleeping Princess, true to the old accord. ...And yet, I would have thee put the dragon to rest. Afore the dark consumeth him, and his vows are forgot.
You should react to the Epilogue of Dark Souls III, it's the most emotional track of the game (probably of the entire trilogy). The fact that represents the very end of Dark Souls gives to it a powerfull impact to the player. Dark Souls III is the end of everything. The Epilogue has a particular taste of nostalgia, resignation. It lulls you because is very warm and peaceful and it's like a sunshine through the apocalyctic scenery, It'almost like you awake from a long dream
Good track! I wish there was a transition between the two phases though. It’s an abrupt change in the music despite the fact that the boss has a scripted animation that marks the change in phases.
I'm really enjoying this channel. I was lucky enough to see a live performance of a Bloodborne piece at the Royal Albert Hall for the PlayStation Concert. They played Gherman's theme, and it was amazing. However, I think you would enjoy listening to Living Failures from Bloodborne. Not only is the fight a spectacle but the music is out of this world. Keep up the good work. Also Midir is a pain to fight :(
I never realized how the heartbeat impacted the track when compared to the music portraying the looming doom that is Midir. It makes you realize how small you are.
The funny thing about your story is that Darkeater Midir is indeed intended to be the very last and greatest challenge of not only DS3 but the entire series. It isn't actually a part of the main path but a well hidden fight you have to proactively search for and it is entirely focused on challenging the player on a mechanical level as opposed to Gael who is the final boss of the story and has more focus on spectacle and theming.
@@trashman9948 While it isn't ash lake levels of hidden, the illusory wall after the elevator passage is in kind of a random place and there's no real hints of it being there and requires you to start hitting random statues.
I think what makes the music so good in ds3 is the fights that accompany it. In this song when the second phase hits and changes drastically when midir gets consumed by the darkness is what really sells it for me.
I'm liking these videos. Though one thing I want to point out is some of the soundtracks you're listening to have repeated sections in them and aren't the true I guess complete song, they're artificially extended by cycling the track (this is done in games because well it'd be awkward if the song ends in the middle of a fight). I would recommend playing the soundtracks that don't cycle to experience it's true form, like for instance the Laurence one didn't cycle and the midir one did. I know it may be hard since finding the right one that doesn't cycle may ruin the point of a first reaction but it's just a tip. To find the ones that don't cycle I recommend either Yuka kitamuras topic channel where you can find the complete songs (plus she composed most of them bless her) or dudewhereismyspoon's channel. Otherwise keep it up dude.
Very good analysis! The comments on the arrangements, and the story of one guy vs titans are spot on the role the music plays in that game and its themes. I feel great appreciation for the work of the composers in this game. Loved how you got the despair, struggle and grim determination that the theme conveys, very impressed.
One of the best youtube comments i've ever seen was in a Darkeater Midir Theme video, the comment was "so this is how the music sounds after 15 seconds"
I'm just speechless about how your storytelling is accurate. You did not get the character but you did get the story of Midir. I'm so amazed. Also, my vote goes to Ancient Stones by Jeremy Soule.
so about that "heartbeat giving the human touch" Midir is a dragon, personally raised and owned by Lord gwyn (the zeus of the dark souls universe) raised to consume all darkness surrounding the ringed city, place where all the humans lived however, people seem to think that by "consuming the darkness" it means stopping the spread of the abyss (the flood in halo). That's not what it means at all, at least not completely. It actually means eating all humans that venture outside the ringed city, effectively confining them to it. So where does the dark type attacks come from during the boss fight? it's because humans hold a portion of the plot of the series "the dark soul". the dark soul is actually our emotions, our sanity, our will to live. when you lose the dark soul, you become a zombier- zombie (humans always respawn in dark souls, making them undead).
I just stumbled onto you videos and they are honestly great. You explain exactly why I love the souls-borne tracks. I suggest to listen to Gerhman, the First Hunter next. That song gives me chills every time I listen to it
Please do Coalescence from the Risk of Rain OST! I'm running out of ways to describe it at this point. I really like the title of the song as it really fits the "gimmick" of the song itself as well as goes with the theme of the rest of the titles, with them all being related to weather or water in some way.
I have a different OST to suggest to you, from a totally different game: Warframe. The name is "Ghosts of void". I don't have much words to describe it, it is truly beautiful, but someone commented the OST and said this: "Hauntingly ethereal. A hymn to a dead and gone civilization, echoing through empty halls." I think it's a perfect definition
This is a great reaction and commentary and all, but one thing i want to point out is that next time you do a ds3 ost reaction to use the version from composer yuka kitamura UA-cam channel as those are the raw versions (they have a start and an end) while these ones are the usually edited versions found in the game that are edited to be looped.
Im an avid Dark Souls fan. I really like the way you talk about your perspective on the game, super cool to see the souls series reach people who have never even touched them. Great content man you got a sub from me!
Hey Atlas, just to let you know. The character you see on the wallpaper for this OST is not our character, but the final boss of the base game and Cape/Banner of Dark Souls III. And the tower you see behind, is not an actual place in the game, it just represents one of the DLCs of the game, "The Ringed City". The Ringed City is made of these towers, not that you actually fight someone in there.
I think even if he knew that, I would still appreciate what he said about it because he wasn’t far off from describing the essence and feeling of Dark Souls. For someone who hasn’t played the game, he talked about a character going through hell and having to continue through it all, refusing to give up. If that’s not the heartbeat of Dark Souls then I don’t know what is.
this is my favorite track from ds3 and also one of my favorite boss fights. its really epic to fight a giant black dragon that shoots lazer with this track playing in the background.

Everyone talking about wanting you to react to Gael or Soul of Cinder while I'm all for those frosty boys Vordt of the Boreal Valley and Sister Friede
I love vordts song it gets my adrenaline going especially when it’s around his final phase
Fuck yeah! Vordts track is highly underrated cus we all raped his big Vordt booty, his soundtrack feels like so much love went into it and for that he has a firm seat on my spotify playlist.
@@notnoodle1918 yeah it truly was tragic he was such an easy boss but atleast we all got something out of it lol
@@bluethunderbolt9631 Then I persist until I have my way ☺️
@@bluethunderbolt9631 Wow. I thought people listened to Pontiff’s theme way more. I freakin love it. I used to loop it and just soak up the chaotic choir and strings. It’s too good. I also recently started appreciating Yhorm and Dragonslayer Armor’s theme.
Yhorms theme is badass, definitely the most underrated track in my opinion
yhorm is my personal favorite of ds3. Even without knowing anything about yhorm you can just hear it's a song about a giant, the song fits so well
I've always thought this song was about Midir the dragon rather than the main character.
And when he close his eyes and start swinging the pen...you know it's a good one
You know it
When I hear those strings in the first 20secs I get flashbacks
PTSD is real
Abyss watchers is a must ❤❤❤
Epilogue from dark souls 3 is a beautiful music and perfect for the ending of one of the greatest game series ever created
picturing yourself in the "story of the song" is something I do with instrumentals a lot, just let my mind wander to whatever images the music create in my mind
Awesooome!
Great job! It's one of my favorites songs in the game.
Just some suggestions:
- Maiden Astrea, both Classic and Remake (Demon Souls)
- Slave Knight Gael (Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City)
- Soul of Cinder (Dark Souls 3)
- Nameless Song (Dark Souls 1, Credits)
- Dragonslayer Armor (Dark Souls 3)
- Ornstein and Smough (Dark Souls 1)
- Pontiff Sulyvhan (Dark Souls 3)
- Gerhman, The First Hunter (Bloodborne)
- Abyss Watchers (Dark Souls 3)
You should give Majula or Sir Alonne theme a try, not many people here recommend ds2 songs.
There is not much people who actually like ds2 that's sad
@@ikikuroasawa2941 a lot of people like the game, it’s just that most people consider it average when compared to the other souls games
@@ikikuroasawa2941 Well there is good reason for that, while there are some good aspects about it. It's so bloated that a lot of the good gets drowned by the ugly. It's not called B-Team Souls for nothing.
Sir Alonne is top tier soundtrack and made the game worth the whole playthrough ! Was gonna recommend it too in my comment but he has to go through DS3 first :)
One of the best? Wow, thank you mate! You made my day!
Two of my favorite bosses :)
Great breakdown! Thanks!
Great video! It was everything I hoped it would be. And I feel the roleplay was pretty on point, since you literally make a one way drop into a pit with a dragon. I'm glad you enjoyed the track and I'm looking forward to future videos!
@Alex Lewis No problem. It was more fun this way.
Thank you for your support and for sharing it with everyone!
React to Abyss Watchers OST, pls.
Challenging Darkeater Midir was like fighting the Darkness' Army
You should react to the Epilogue of Dark Souls III, it's the most emotional track of the game (probably of the entire trilogy). The fact that represents the very end of Dark Souls gives to it a powerfull impact to the player. Dark Souls III is the end of everything. The Epilogue has a particular taste of nostalgia, resignation. It lulls you because is very warm and peaceful and it's like a sunshine through the apocalyctic scenery, It'almost like you awake from a long dream
You know you're a dark souls veteran when you get panicked just listening to the music
Your analysis was so interesting to listen, now I can appreciated the track even more. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks a lot Victor!
Good track! I wish there was a transition between the two phases though. It’s an abrupt change in the music despite the fact that the boss has a scripted animation that marks the change in phases.
@@jillsandwich4537 THAT makes sense. The extended cuts can be good but only if they take the time to keep the original feel.
Also Midir is a pain to fight :(
That must have been quite the concert. Thanks mate!
Atlas for the win, easily one of the best discover this year ! Let’s break it down ! 🤘🏽
😆😆
I never realized how the heartbeat impacted the track when compared to the music portraying the looming doom that is Midir. It makes you realize how small you are.
Soul of Cinder
Abyss Watchers
Slave Knight Gael
These three tracks are immaculate.
Your face on the second half describes our faces when Midir starts summoning spirits from the dead.
Darkeater Midir eats Human Souls, more precisely :Dark Souls.
So that's why his track breathes life maybe
No he didnt ate human souls. He ate the dark itself. His souls was becoming a dark soul like just like artorias and gael had.
Been loving the souls and bloodborne reactions man! My favorite series and the music is so so good
The funny thing about your story is that Darkeater Midir is indeed intended to be the very last and greatest challenge of not only DS3 but the entire series. It isn't actually a part of the main path but a well hidden fight you have to proactively search for and it is entirely focused on challenging the player on a mechanical level as opposed to Gael who is the final boss of the story and has more focus on spectacle and theming.
In my opinion, it isn't super far out of the way. Most players notice the passageway in the elevator, I think.
@@trashman9948 While it isn't ash lake levels of hidden, the illusory wall after the elevator passage is in kind of a random place and there's no real hints of it being there and requires you to start hitting random statues.
@@RandomGuy-ll9uz true true
@@RandomGuy-ll9uz
An npc actually reveals the location and what to look for.
@@RandomGuy-ll9uz Shiva tells you exactly where to find midir if you ask her after knocking him off the bridge
I think what makes the music so good in ds3 is the fights that accompany it. In this song when the second phase hits and changes drastically when midir gets consumed by the darkness is what really sells it for me.
Meshuggah in the background! Sweet!
Hell yeah 🤘🏻
Man, the Soulsborne OST's are masterpiece after masterpiece
the choir in the second phase goes ham especially when at the end where u riposte Midir
Very good analysis! The comments on the arrangements, and the story of one guy vs titans are spot on the role the music plays in that game and its themes. I feel great appreciation for the work of the composers in this game. Loved how you got the despair, struggle and grim determination that the theme conveys, very impressed.
Thank you mate!
One of the best youtube comments i've ever seen was in a Darkeater Midir Theme video, the comment was "so this is how the music sounds after 15 seconds"
Father Gascoigne theme. That soundtrack hit me so well in that boss battle.
Great video! Greetings from Colombia
Que viva Colombia parce!
I'm just speechless about how your storytelling is accurate. You did not get the character but you did get the story of Midir. I'm so amazed.
Also, my vote goes to Ancient Stones by Jeremy Soule.
I also got that feeling of fighting a threat that you're not prepared for. 22:16 this is also my favourite song. diamond is correct score.
It would be great if you react to dark souls 3 abyss watchers 👌
Good idea telling him about this one Sir Paradigm
Hey atlas great vid! u should do Slave Knight Gael (DS3) next time, it's the best song from the game im my opinion!
My favorite souls OST of all time!
so about that "heartbeat giving the human touch"
Midir is a dragon, personally raised and owned by Lord gwyn (the zeus of the dark souls universe) raised to consume all darkness surrounding the ringed city, place where all the humans lived
however, people seem to think that by "consuming the darkness" it means stopping the spread of the abyss (the flood in halo).
That song gives me chills every time I listen to it
Top 5 Soundtracks are
1. Midir
2. Ludwig
3. Gael
4. Abyss Watchers
5. Father Gascoigne

What a lovely reaction and breakdown. Love your vids brother, be safe and stay kind.
Been really enjoying your reaction on souls and bloodborne soundtrack and I would think that Gehrman the first hunter Ost will be perfect for you.
Somebody show this man the pontiff ost.
if i see Slave Knight Gael that would make my day
Thank you Mr Sir Paradigm
Indeed 👍🏻
You SHOULD react to Slave Knight Gael OST it's amazing
Please do Coalescence from the Risk of Rain OST! I'm running out of ways to describe it at this point. I really like the title of the song as it really fits the "gimmick" of the song itself as well as goes with the theme of the rest of the titles, with them all being related to weather or water in some way.
sirens call and con lenitud poderosa as well
Your breakdowns are amaezeeng
Thank you Mattia!
I played Warframe for a bit last year. Really good game!
@@AtlasBenighted really good indeed!
Thank you for this to see that these soundtracks are getting their attention beautiful sound tracks came from this game
Im waiting on slave knight gael
Such pure reaction deserves a reaction 😄.
Yes!!!! I've been waiting for this
He should have reacted to someone fighting him while the music played
Would love to see more of these. Youve gained a sub from me for it :)

Random thought but what if you also reacted to the boss fight after the OST to see the context in which the song is used?

Anyone who fears this music is just one who fought the boss.
You should react to "Final Fantasy XIII OST : Can't Catch a Break."
Lol I didn't expect the Star Wars comparison, very nice.
May the force be with you
Hey Atlas, just to let you know.
Yeah, just said for context
this is my favorite track from ds3 and also one of my favorite boss fights. its really epic to fight a giant black dragon that shoots lazer with this track playing in the background.
What if the next reaction is the 3 phases of the battle of Friede and Father Ariandel
