To counter Sori's narrative about the white people doing the most evil for a group. Don't forget that Ghengis Khan is believed to have killed at least 10% of the world's population through war during his day. To appeal to her Christian perspective, white people (as we know them today) were not around when God brought the great flood. The way people lived back then was so wicked and twisted that Christian prophecy claims it will only return to that state again during the end times. I side with Vin on this one. The world is fallen, and the Europeans reached a level of technological advancement to make them the most effective killers. The evil that drove them exists in all men. People doing evil to other people has always existed in every culture. It is different when that evil is done by one social group to another on such a large scale. The plight of Native Americans has been overlooked in this country for a long, long time. To put it in perspective, I went to school on the Yakama Indian Reservation in eastern Washington State, from grade school through high school. The amount of times we were taught about what happened to the native Yakama tribe during the western expansion? Zero. Nada. Zip. I don't think all white people should feel guilty about what happened, but we sure as shit should acknowledge it, recognize that every white person owning property in this country benefited from the genocide of Natives, and that we must do our utmost to never let it happen again. To step beyond that, people act indignant and become outraged and defensive when you tell them that modern American culture is founded on white supremacy. This country's social order is set up to perpetuate it. This country was built on stealing land from Natives while committing genocide on them, and by enslaving and exploiting African-Americans for labor. A country built on that model can't help but be one that, knowingly or not, is structured to promote white supremacy. This is the challenge that white people of conscience should face. We need to acknowledge this all happened and that it has impacted people of color in this country. We cannot, however, change the past. But we have the tools to learn from it, to make this country better for everyone - to make it just, to make it equitable. I think we (all of us) also have that responsibility. This song is one of the reasons I absolutely love Anthrax. It's got a great message and it freaking rocks!
